15 Best Steakhouses in Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo is a city of granite, sea spray, and deep maritime pride. While most visitors arrive for the ramparts, the tidal swings, and the ferry to England, the Corsair City also holds a quietly formidable reputation as a meat lover’s destination. The local dining scene is shaped by the Atlantic climate and a Breton appetite for substance, which means a great steak here is rarely an afterthought. Whether you are stepping off a yacht, finishing a coastal walk, or warming up after a windy afternoon on the beach, a perfectly seared piece of beef with a bold red wine or local cider is one of the most satisfying ways to end the day.

The best steakhouses in Saint-Malo are not all traditional French brasseries. Some lean into the American steakhouse model with dry-aged cuts and loaded sides, while others celebrate the French bistro approach with entrecôte, béarnaise sauce, and hand-cut fries. A few rely on exceptional local sourcing, working with Breton and Norman cattle farmers who prioritize grass-fed, naturally raised animals. The result is a steak culture that feels both international and deeply rooted in the region’s agricultural traditions.

Because Saint-Malo is a walled city with narrow streets and high tourist traffic, quality can vary dramatically from one block to the next. The best tables are often tucked just outside the most crowded tourist circuits, in the intra-muros lanes, the Saint-Servan district, or along the Paramé seafront. Locals tend to book early, especially on weekends and during the summer ferry season, so spontaneity is not always rewarded. Knowing where to go before you arrive can save you from a disappointing tourist menu.

This guide focuses on restaurants that consistently deliver high-quality beef, proper cooking temperatures, good service, and a memorable atmosphere. It includes classic French steak-frites spots, modern grill houses, and a few places where the steak shares the spotlight with exceptional seafood. Prices, styles, and settings vary, but each entry has earned a reputation for taking red meat seriously.

One important note for international visitors: French steak doneness is often cooked one level below what you may expect in the United Kingdom or North America. A “medium” in Saint-Malo will frequently arrive closer to medium-rare. If you prefer no pink at all, ask for “bien cuit” and be prepared for a firmer texture. The best kitchens will still manage to keep the meat juicy.

Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a deeply satisfying meal after exploring the Emerald Coast, these are the places worth reserving. Here are the 15 best steakhouses in Saint-Malo.

Lovely oldly wordly restaurant added to the character of the visit. Food (pork version of Beef Wellington) absolutely delicious! Would definitely recommend and advise booking a table.

A fantastic find in St Malo, lovely small French bistro in the side streets. Found it by accident but went back twice. Understated food on a chalk board menu with daily specials. Loved the rabbit terrine and souris d'agneau especially but the duck legs with phenomenal chips was also something special. Great friendly service as well!

Oh my word! What a delightful evening! Thank you so much to the hosts! Super food, lamb chops cooked on an open fire, great wine and ambience! Absolutely excellent! Highly recommend but do reserve! Exceptional!😃

Incredible restaurant! The waitress was fun, knowledgeable and very efficient. The food was also amazing with great beef cuts followed closely by their seafood. Portions are generous and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend, a must eat in Saint-Malo!

2024. Cannot rate this place highly enough. If you have a chance to visit do so. Booking in advance highly advisable. 2025. Here again early start just as the fire has been lit. Time for a couple of glasses of wine before it is ready for cooking. 5 * yet again. With only 24 seats available per sitting booking in advance is highly recommended.

Great little restaurant with grilled meats and seafood. Cosy, it is and very warm atmosphere with friendly service and great food. Food is grilled over an open flame with hot coals in the dining room. Deserts were delicious.

The best steak in Saint-Malo. Entrecote 400 G . The Chief will make the steak on the grill. They have smaller steak or you can try Canard (Duck) or a mix. Nice and cosy place. Order a table to be sure to get in. I will come back again one day.

We had dinner at this restaurant for one night, and I must say I was very happy with the experience. The staff were very friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect. We tried a salad, fillet steak, and rumsteak. The salad and rumsteak were both excellent. The salad was a mix of grilled vegetables (eggplant, bell pepper, etc.) with octopus and was absolutely delicious. The rumsteak with garlic butter sauce was cooked medium as requested, very tender, and melted in the mouth. The only reason I did not give a 5-star review is the fillet steak. It was tasty but a bit tough and not among the best steaks I have tried, especially compared to the rumsteak. Overall, I was very satisfied with the dinner.

Exceptional in every respect. Our waiter could not have been more accommodating, the food was the best we’ve had all week and the Rhum Baba will make you sleep well. Highly recommended.
Chris Astley-Stone★★★★★
This is hands down the best restaurant in town. What is most impressive is that, despite its central location, it doesn't feel like a "tourist trap" at all, it’s an authentic, high-quality dining experience. We had one of the best meals of our lives here. We started with the oysters, which were incredibly fresh, followed by the salt cod gratin and the fillet of beef. The beef was finished in butter right at the table, and the flavour was absolutely superb. The service was both attentive and efficient without ever making us feel hurried. We spent nearly two hours savoring the food and the atmosphere. If you are in St. Malo, this is a must-visit for a special meal.

Wow! Lovely restaurant with great service and amazing food! We went twice during our trip and loved everything we got. Good prices for the quality of the food, the steak was very good, desserts were amazing, and nice vibe for dinner 🍽️

We visited twice during our holiday. I guess that’s a goods sign. One visit for steak. Another for Moules. Both were very enjoyable - lovely position and tasty food. Decent value too considering that it’s in a prime spot

Texan Approved ✅ Finally, a great local Barbecue spot! We found lots of imported genuine decorations, and view of the kitchen. There’s an attached bar, a little on the small side, but it’s impressive how well they use the space given the size of the restaurant. We got the beef cheek & pulled pork sandwich. Very well made and presented. Impressed! Atmosphere was fantastic, great music, nothing overwhelming, a great balance. And the owner, Chuck (Charles), is very involved and a great guy who speaks excellent English! Definitely will be back 💪🏼

We were looking for a place to eat on a Sunday evening before the world cup final and stumbled across Uncle Chuck's. We were lucky to have found it as the food was superb and the service was friendly and attentive. We had the chilli con carne, the chicken burger and the nachos which were all really good. The star of the show however was the chicken Caesar salad which my wife announced to be "the best she'd ever tasted". We would highly recommend this restaurant.

For us it was a discovery that brought a great positive note to our tour of France. During our short stop in Saint Malo, a very touristic destination, full of restaurants and places with good food, we found this small restaurant with people who put their soul into their dishes and value their customers. We tested almost their entire menu and I urge you to step foot in their doors. you will not regret it. Thank you very much!

Absolutely horrendous - made a reservation (which is on their website). Got to the restaurant to a ridiculously rude member of staff who came across extremely arrogant and unprofessional. Would not recommend. Who also quoted “you wouldn’t reserve a table at McDonalds would you”.

Very nice place with very tasty food. They have a lot of choice of steak and wine. Delphine is general manager very helpful and nice person. Recommend!

Enjoyed a meal here today, with our two year old son. Although my French is terrible (Ireland native) the staff were great and spoke good English. The food was lovely and service perfect. Even with the confusion over a high chair 🤣. The meat was perfect and cooked right, rare is rare! Wish I spoke French better to tell the staff how much we liked it.

Booked last minute during our day visit for dinner here. Food was excellent and the selection was from a fresh daily specials board. Definitely recommend during your stay.
Dominic Carpin★★★★★
This has to be the most perfect restaurant. Everything is of utmost quality: cuisine, friendliness of staff, and atmosphere. Despite my very weak French language skills, I navigated the menu with the help of my waiter. Gravlax de saumone, Cod with courgettes in a savory butter and ham sauce, and profiteroles smothered in the most amazing chocolate sauce I've ever tasted. A very nice Sauvignon Blanc, with un caffe and a Lambig de Bretagne to cap things off. The waiter urged me to pop around the corner and speak to the chef. A very young chap with extraordinary skills (spoke to him in English). Ça c'est bon. Go here!
Tiny Phan★★★★★
One word to describe this lovely restaurant “top” ! The server is very nice, and we had a chance to meet the chef, he makes dishes with dedication. We had a great time in Saint-Malo.
Michelle Shin★★★★★
1. Make a reservation - easy to do by messaging them via Facebook! They have a sign saying full for lunch and dinner hanging on their door so it must happen a lot. 2. Local feel - menu is hand written and brought on chalkboards. It is in French but the man servicing front of house knew enough English to talk us through the options. Because the place is small, it really feels cosy. 3. Amazing food - highlights were the "accras croustillants de crabe" - perfectly fried and seasoned crab cake; fish w curry beurre blanc sauce and parmesan risotto; and the "tiramisu" made w speculoos cookies, marscapone cream, apples and caramel au beurre sale 4. Great service - service was prompt and incredibly nice...even after we made a pretty big mistake. 😋 5. Close to beach - after our dinner, we walked one minute to the beach and watched the sunset. 6. Great value for money - was given two options: three course meal @ 30€ or two course meal @ 28€ (prices are as of today, could change but wanted to give context) All in all, a meal we will never forget! Recommend if you're in the area!

Seaside city, we had the sea bream . So fresh, perfectly cooked. A nice bottle of Bourgogne Alicote complemented the creamy sauce. Very friendly service.

Just like the other comments say, overpriced and overrated. I paid 25€ for an eggplant dish... And the eggplant arrived very lukewarm, so its true that their plates are premade. Also they wouldnt accept my carte restaurant. I dont recommend this place

Service was great here, very accommodating for non-French speakers! We sat on the patio so it was a really nice vibe. The street was not too busy and the food was good. We were sad that the seafood platter we saw in the reviews was no longer in their menu, but the waiter was very kind in explaining that to us and the food was all pretty good. The salad especially was delicious but we were a little disappointed with the ribeye steak.
P Layn★★★★★
Very good restaurant! I recommend the rillette de poisson, so tasty! I ordered the pave de boeuf with beurre persillé, the sauce was a bit disappointing, I wished they added garlic to it, but overall it was delicious and has a quality. The owner is very nice.
Honest Palate★★★★☆
Most of our food was quite good! The pork that I had in the picture was pretty dry but that's really my only qualm. I actually thought I was getting chicken due to a translation mistake. Oh well. Very friendly staff and cozy interior. Thanks!
Kyna McGill★★★★☆
Great steak, but the fries were not very crunchy and I wish they gave more salad because it was truly delicious. I also am not quite sure if 3 leaves of lettuce counts as a salad. Great apple juice. The service was amazing, and was able to help me with the menu when I wasn’t sure what to order.

Had a wonderful dinner here on 26 Juin. I highly recommend Pesk ha farz and Kig ha farz (plats traditionelles Breton). Both were cooked just perfectly and the sauces were beautifully balanced. They didn't overwhelm the flavors of each dish. I'm not an expert on Breton cooking, but this was a top notch example. We were greeted by a very knowledgeable man who really knows his products. Helped us pair a wine with each dish, and brought out a delicious cider to sample before dinner (which in hindsight, went nicely with the pate en croute). He even helped position the table so that we both had a view of the water as the evening went on. It was an excellent meal, with a light-hearted fun atmosphere. If you're in St. Malo, don't miss a chance to try this place.
Vernon Rabbetts★★★★★
Really nice restaurant, the Pesk ha Farz and Kig ha Farz with buckwheat what crumble are real stand-out dishes but the burger looked amazing too, and the foie gras starter and tarte tartin dessert disappeared very quickly. Service is friendly and the decor warm, and inviting.
Sean★★★★★
Delicious food, great service and a cozy refined atmosphere. A great menu and wine selection, with each dish having its own unique taste. The waiters were all very attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend, with a reservation.
MR Aparis★★★★☆
Went there on a weeknight. Despite asking for the deee table outside they said it wasn’t available and told us we could have a place inside. There are a lot of tables and there was one server and the owner. The service was hectic and slow. Once you had your food you didn’t see the server again until the next course. The food was good. The presentation lovely. The outside table wasn’t filled.
Russ W★★★★★
Dined with my wife (Tues 7:10pm). Warmly greeted and seated inside by a window. The restaurant has indoor (ground and mezzanine) and outdoor seating. I had the Kig Ha Farz for a main. Perfectly presented, cooked and taste. The two proprietors were lovely. Attentive and engaging. Plenty of atmosphere without overbearing music or loud chatter. Just a fantastic environment for a relaxed, delicious dining experience. Highly recommended.

It was a wonderful experience to dine here. We were a group of 4 (and a cat); each of us ordered a set including a starter, main course and dessert. All the seafood are awesome! The staff are friendly and attentive. And the sea view is amazing. We had a great night. Parfait 😌

Fantastic views of harbor, fresh fish menu with everything a seafood lover wants. We were passing through otherwise we would have definitely returned. Great meat starter, followed by a fish / seafood tower. Good choice of wines, very friendly staff... of the beaten path but highly highly reccomended

I came here for lunch upon a friend's recommendation. This was the best meal I had during my 6-day stay in St. Malo. The staff were friendly and kind, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere with a gorgeous view. The prices are fair for what they are and the portions are filling (I had a main course + dessert and it was perfect for a small person with a monster's appetite).
Rana Mahdavi Far★★★★☆
Very pleasant view of sunset, make sure to make reservations in advance. The staffs were polit, helpful and friendly. Specially one who was speaking English, explained every dish to us with patient. We felt welcomed. They brought tuna fish bread on the table for free. It is on the ground floor which make it accessible for everyone. They have parking area. Overall a nice place to watch the sunset if it is after 7 pm. Becouse they open at 7 pm.

Good food and excellent service. Everyone was friendly and accommodating, even though we only spoke English. Special thanks to Maelle, who was very kind and attentive throughout our visit. We had a great experience and would happily come back.
Trevor Cobb★☆☆☆☆
Unfortunately our waiter lucas was out of his depth. As the evening wore on tables were waiting longer and longer for service. Tables were getting served person by person and we saw several customers watching their food get cold waiting for others at their table to get theirs. Lucas wasn't attentive to his tables and spent a lot of time away so that when he did appear lots of us were vying for his attention to order or pay. Shame. The food and restaurant were nice, but lucas should have been supervised or at least helped, he wasn't able to keep up on his own.
David Vogelaar★★☆☆☆
We where there with 2 people. The place had NO other customers. We ordered steak with fries. We where served cold! Fries and a steak like the soul of my shoe. After explaining that the fries there cold they brought new. Cold again! They took steaks and fries away and brought 2 good steaks and hot fries. The cook is uncompatent or/ and lazy. Only 2 people to cook for and he does not care! I would send him home immediately!!! The serving staff was not amused by all of this and apologised many times. Was Not their fault. The really did their best for us. No blame to them at all!!! I would not go back there because of the cook. Its a shame. My experience all over France is positive to eat a steak at Buffalo Grill. Only not in Saint Malo.
Jazley van Ankum★★★★☆
A very pleasing place to eat. The service is great, although not all staff speaks English there are multiple people in the staff who do. For example we got everything served by the server named Maelle. A very nice, young lady who spoke english and was overall really sweet. Overall experience was great and I would come again!
Kelly Jones★★★★☆
Very good. As non French speakers ordering was made very easy via a QR code where we could see the menu in English. The glass on the table was however dirty.

Elevated dining in Saint-Malo. Sleek, modern room, first-rate 6 course tasting menu, beautifully plated. Each course was a reflection of Brittany's bounty of seafood, and given our April visit, all dishes were hyper-seasonal (spring asparagus, etc). Excellent, professional yet friendly service. Excellent value, too. Would not be surprised if the chef's cooking were rewarded with a Michelin nod. Would definitely recommend.
Alexandra Deutsch★★★★★
An unforgettable and beautifully presented menu, a view of the kitchen, a welcoming and attentive staff and each plate as visually stunning as it was delicious. Very generous and very high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Attention to every detail. One of our most special meals during our stay in France. A must!
Simon Porter★★★★★
A wonderful experience that made our visit to St Malo. A short distance behind the amazing promenade. The food was of upmost quality with an open kitchen to watch the care taken in preparation of the food. The staff were very caring and friendly and many regulars were in the restaurant which was a good sign.

A young skillfull chef has assembled a great team in St Malo intra muros to delight his customers. Great lunch menu supported by kind and engaging service. Credit to the chef for delivering such good value for money. Highly recommend and suggest to book as all tables were attended during a mid-week lunch.

Perfect new little restaurant in the heart of the quieter end of the old town. We popped in and booked a table for 8pm. There was one wonderful front of house and waiter who ran the place like clockwork. It's a joy to have someone explain the menu with such pride. The pride wasn't unfounded. Incredible food you wouldn't have been surprised if it was from a top chef in a well established restaurant in a big city. Every plate was a work of art but without compromising the flavours. If you come to St Malo, don't miss this little gem.

Came here on a Friday with no reservation. Luckily, our hotel called the restaurant and we got a spot at 19H. We were so glad that we came here. The service was super friendly and attentive. The food was amazing, including the suggested wines. Highly recommend this place.

Lovely food, dog friendly inside, and our waiter was so friendly and helpful bringing water for the pooch, cleaning it all up after she spilled it all over the floor, and was just an all round great person. No view of the bay but all restaurants on the front were packed, and we much preferred the quieter experience here. Will most definitely be going back.

We are on vacation and wanted to enjoy a nice evening in a good looking and recommended restaurant. However, our expectations were not met. The welcome was very warmly. Everything happened very very quickly. We had just gotten our drinks/appetizers, then our food arrived the next minute. We were looking forward to the Moules all day, as these are a favorite dish here by the sea. At first we thought there were individual weird moules in between, but it turned out the whole pot was the same. The moules were overcooked, dry and there was absolutely not enough soup/sauce on top. The fries were excellent, however, you didn't even get a pot to put sauce on, for the fries. We dumped these into a moules bowl. During the whole meal no one came to ask us if everything was ok. It was the most unpalatable moules we have ever eaten, and the first meal we did not finish out of disgust. We waited for the waitress to come and clear our cutlery, but after 10 minutes no one came, despite them all walking past several times. So we just got up, paid and complained the menu at the waiter, who gave us a free portion. The waiter was even upset with the cook himself. He gave us an digestif as compensation. This was all very very nice on his part, he was also very sorry and apologized several times. On the whole, the restaurant looked very cute, the service seemed actually also very good and fast, but not with us. The dishes of our neighboring tables all looked very good, just not our moules.

Tips for Choosing the Right Steakhouse in Saint-Malo

A great steak dinner in Saint-Malo depends as much on your choices as it does on the kitchen. These practical tips will help you match the right restaurant to your appetite, budget, and travel style. From timing your reservation to understanding local beef terminology, a little preparation goes a long way toward avoiding disappointment.

Book ahead, especially intra-muros. The best steak restaurants inside the old city walls fill up quickly, particularly from June through September. Even on a Tuesday evening in low season, a same-day walk-in can mean a long wait or a cramped table near the door. Call or reserve online one to three days ahead.

Ask where the beef comes from. French menus often list the breed or origin, such as Charolais, Limousine, or Normandy cattle. If you see a specific farm or region named, that is usually a sign the kitchen cares about sourcing. Do not hesitate to ask your server for a recommendation based on the day’s cuts.

Understand the French doneness scale. Bleu is nearly raw, saignant is rare, à point is medium-rare to medium, and bien cuit is well done. If you want a true medium, ask for “à point bien cuit” or simply say “medium” and expect a pink center. Communicating clearly prevents an expensive cut from going back to the kitchen.

Consider the time of year. In summer, many steak-focused restaurants are busier and noisier, but the energy is part of the appeal. In autumn and winter, you will find a calmer, more local crowd and often better access to daily specials. The same steak can feel completely different in February than in August.

Look beyond the tourist strip. The streets immediately around the Porte Saint-Vincent and the main rampart entrances are convenient but often inconsistent. Walking five to ten minutes into Saint-Servan, Courtoisville, or the quieter intra-muros lanes usually rewards you with better value, more attentive service, and a more genuine local atmosphere.

Do not skip the house sides and sauces. In Saint-Malo, a steak is rarely served alone. Hand-cut fries, peppercorn sauce, shallot butter, or a simple green salad often indicate how much care the kitchen puts into the whole plate. If the sides are treated as an afterthought, the steak may be too.

Saint-Malo’s steak scene continues to evolve, but the fundamentals remain unchanged: good meat, confident cooking, and a table that makes you want to linger. Whether you choose a classic brasserie near the ramparts or a modern grill room in Saint-Servan, the city rewards diners who arrive hungry and informed.

The next time the tide is low, the wind is sharp, and the smell of the sea fills the old streets, you will know exactly where to find a warm dining room and a steak worth remembering. In a city built by sailors and privateers, a proper meat dinner still feels like the right kind of victory.
