15 Best Seafood Restaurants in Saint-Malo

The walled city of Saint-Malo stands as a jewel of the Breton coast, where the rhythm of the tides dictates the pace of daily life. For centuries, this privateer stronghold has drawn its wealth and character from the sea, shaping a culinary identity that is as bold as its maritime history. Dining here is not merely about sustenance; it is an immersion into the raw, saline soul of the Atlantic.

The local gastronomy is anchored in the exceptional quality of its shellfish and wild fish, harvested from the emerald waters of the Emerald Coast. From the prized oysters of Cancale just down the road to the scallops of the bay, the ingredients speak for themselves. Chefs here walk a fine line between honoring rustic Breton traditions and pushing the boundaries of modern French cuisine.

Navigating the cobblestone streets of the intra-muros and the bustling docks of the Saint-Servan district can be overwhelming for a hungry traveler. Touristy traps are plentiful, but so are authentic institutions where the catch of the day is treated with reverence. Finding the perfect plateau de fruits de mer or a perfectly seared piece of line-caught sea bass requires local insight.

We have combed the ramparts and the port to curate a list that reflects the true diversity of this historic city. Whether you are seeking a Michelin-starred experience with panoramic views or a no-frills bistro where fishermen eat elbow-to-elbow with locals, Saint-Malo has a table for you. Our selection prioritizes freshness, provenance, and the unique atmosphere that makes each venue special.

In this guide, we focus on restaurants that consistently deliver excellence, not just in their food, but in their hospitality and connection to the region. We evaluate the sourcing of their seafood, the skill of the kitchen, and the authenticity of the dining room. You will find options ranging from elegant fine dining to casual crΓͺperies that serve the ocean’s bounty in a buckwheat galette.

Below is our curated list of the 15 best seafood restaurants in Saint-Malo, designed to help you eat like a local rather than a tourist. These establishments represent the pinnacle of the city’s maritime dining scene, ensuring that every euro spent is a worthy investment in your culinary memory.

Nice view and fresh seafood Great food paired with a lovely backdrop. You can view sunset from the restaurant. Restaurant located at a back of the ferry terminal next to the parking. Very convenient if you arrive by car and park nearby. Food was great. Service was nice. Staffs are attentive.

It was a wonderful experience to dine here. We were a group of 4 (and a cat); each of us ordered a set including a starter, main course and dessert. All the seafood are awesome! The staff are friendly and attentive. And the sea view is amazing. We had a great night. Parfait 😌

Fantastic views of harbor, fresh fish menu with everything a seafood lover wants. We were passing through otherwise we would have definitely returned. Great meat starter, followed by a fish / seafood tower. Good choice of wines, very friendly staff... of the beaten path but highly highly reccomended

I came here for lunch upon a friend's recommendation. This was the best meal I had during my 6-day stay in St. Malo. The staff were friendly and kind, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere with a gorgeous view. The prices are fair for what they are and the portions are filling (I had a main course + dessert and it was perfect for a small person with a monster's appetite).

Very pleasant view of sunset, make sure to make reservations in advance. The staffs were polit, helpful and friendly. Specially one who was speaking English, explained every dish to us with patient. We felt welcomed. They brought tuna fish bread on the table for free. It is on the ground floor which make it accessible for everyone. They have parking area. Overall a nice place to watch the sunset if it is after 7 pm. Becouse they open at 7 pm.

I loved this establishment and they were good enough to serve us food even though they were closing. It was absolutely tipping it down outside but the staff and atmosphere more than made up for it. Individual wine by the glass is a little pricey but it was gorgeous. Along with the fish and frites of the day. This restaurant has a really lovely buzz about the place.

Incredible dinner for two with the very best service and a very surprising addition to our lovely stay in St-Malo. The seafood was incredible! I would very much rate the spider crab claws, the Langoustines and the obviously the oysters. We compared the Oysters Speciale and the Oysters Fine! Both delicious… the special version was slightly lighter! Muscadet… of course… delicious!

We discovered this charming restaurant randomly while looking for lunch today. The food is delicious, service good with warm staff, and moreover the scenery is the bonus you won’t regret. We even came back the same night to have dinner…I would recommend to reserve table in advance thought! Merci encore!

For seafood lovers this is a number 1 restaurant in Saint-Malo. Everything is fresh and tasty. As I main course I took an octopus. Very good presentation as you can see on photo and very tasty. Corect cooking and harmony of ingredients wonderful. Highly recommend this place

The place overall nice and charming. Located just next to the see side on the quote street away from regular tourists flow. The food is really delicious and well cooked. All fresh and nice decorated, well done for the chef! The only point preventing me to have 5 stars is the size of portion vs price. The starter and main course are quite small and the price is quite high.

We went on Saturday night and there was a seafood buffet all you can eat for 39€ per person (comes also with an open buffet of cheese and desserts). πŸ’― % worth the price. The food was absolutely delicious!!! Everything is so fresh and just amazing. We loved how clean the place is, not one smell of stinky fish to be found! The extra highlight is how kind and welcoming all the staff is. The hostess was super helpful explaining how it works and not pushing us to decide on anything quickly. The waiters always available to pick up our plates and clean if needed. And one of the staff members was kind enough to help us break up our giant crab πŸ¦€ that we picked by mistake from the non-prepared ones! Loved everything, definitely to come back here and enjoy a meal. They also have non-buffet options, but better to call and ask if it’s available on weekends!
Oleksii Zhaburovskyiβ˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†
The place is with concept! You pay fixed amount and have unlimited access to various cold and hot seafood, oysters, crabs and so on For extra pay there is more serious stuff, like lobsters or fish of the day. The food is good, the stuff is good (due to the concept, the table serves is limited, but still). Really good option to have a dinner and you can be sure you will leave satisfied. The minus is that variety is not so big - oysters, crevettes, crab - good enough. The rest od seafood is not so attractive (it was smallest mussels I've ever seen). And the prise is quite high (from 35e without vine).

If you love buffet, this is a great buffet for seafood and definitely worth visiting. A lot of fresh seafood and it will be worth your money. Staff is great as well and everything was always updated in term of seafood choice. I removed 1 star because of the desert choices. It was OK but not phenomenal. That said if seafood is only your meal that you seek. Go straight there. The seafood Couteaux were excellent! Parking is easy a across the street.
Beki Mesonβ˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…
Incredible experience, not just 5 star, this is a must-try for any seafood lover in the area. The buffet was diverse and delicious, with whole seafood on the shell, mixed seafood salads, fish soup, cooked dishes, cheese board and dessert trolley. The staff were wonderful even with our broken French. Very family friendly, lots of kids there. What a fabulous place!

Unforgettable Dining Experience at La Cabane On Sunday night, my partner and I enjoyed what has undoubtedly become our top dining experience in France! From the moment we made our reservation, the impeccable service shone through. The staff were diligent, keeping our table pristine and swiftly clearing away plates and shells throughout the evening. The fresh seafood buffet, brilliantly anchored by succulent spider crabs and the freshest oysters we've ever had. The selection didn't end there; the choice of desserts and cheeses rounded off the dining experience. The pricing? Exceptionally reasonable for the quality and variety offered. This is a paradise for any seafood lover. As for my partner, who grew up in a fishing family, she didn’t hesitate to give it a resounding 10/10. If you're in the area and craving an extraordinary seafood experience, this place is a must-visit!

I came across this restaurant almost by chance while walking down a street full of seafood restaurants, and I’m so glad I decided to stop here. We went for some typical local dishes, starting with a plate of oysters to share, followed by mussels with French fries β€” absolutely delicious, and genuinely one of the highlights of the meal. We also ordered the fish of the day, which was cooked beautifully and served with a delicious garlic sauce. Even the steak was very good and definitely held its own. The service was another highlight: friendly, warm, and welcoming. The staff were genuinely lovely and made us feel at home. The bill was fair and honest for the quality and quantity of food. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the whole experience felt authentic and unpretentious. The setting is rustic and traditional, which fits the restaurant perfectly. Highly recommended if you’re looking for fresh seafood, good food, and a warm, genuine atmosphere.

What a lovely place! The meal was perfect. We had mussels prepared two different ways, and both were absolutely excellent, fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor πŸ¦ͺ Probably the best mussels I’ve ever had! The space was cozy and relaxed, and the location was excellent. The service was energetic, fun, and genuinely friendly. Bravo, full marks! I truly hope I’ll get to come back someday. If you’re heading to Saint-Malo, don’t miss this place!πŸ˜‹

Per Chance came across this small restaurant at lunchtime. Lucky for us!! Given a very friendly welcome by one of the two guys who seemed to be running the place. Very laid back atmosphere. Food great. My husband had the mussels and I the fish of the day which was delicately cooked and served on sweet potatoe purΓ©e, vegetables and seafood sauce. Accompanied by a very good RosΓ©. To finish a couple of espresso’s. If ever back in St Malo, would certainly return!! Thanks πŸ™

Loved the food here.. No complaints especially as the guy serving us helped with good English speaking. I had the fish and chips with a big platter of mixed shell seafood. Very popular location and was lucky to get a table. I would recommend visit before eating to book or check availability for a table .. Thanks again for the fantastic fresh food..

I spotted this place running along the seafront & thought it looked interesting as specialising in sea food - always a favourite. It was pretty busy for a Monday night but service was fine. They did have razor clams - which would have been my dish of choice. Went with Foie Gras followed by scallops - both good but the scallops won. Impressive & huge wine list - if a little pricey..

We had an amazing time and really enjoyed our dinner. We started with mixed seafood platter, it was absolutely delicious and fresh. Followed by duck for me and fish chosen by chef for my husband, both dishes were exceptional. We ended our dinner with dessert, which was really the icing on the cake, we had crepe Suzanne and strawberry basil dessert, these were mind-blowing.

Our server failed to inform my wife of the price for the whole Langouste. $253.00 euros for a tail is ridiculous. Plus, she was vomiting all night with diarrhea. Would not recommend.

I came late, near closing time. I was pretty much ignored by the waitstaff rushing about, but was able to get a table. After a wait, i got the menus - the wine list is impressive, a massive book organized very well. The food was mediocre: i had the Chateaubriand that was large but chewy and the sauce it was swimming in was pretty tasteless. It came with fries, which were soggy, lukewarm and clearly not freshly made. Haphazard plating with no excellence. The service was a bit chaotic, i think i eventually interacted with 3 or 4 different persons. Seemed like a touristy seafront place for large groups. As i was leaving, the servers were still bringing in replacement dishes for customers who had complaints, although the place had officially closed. Not a good experience.

Had lunch here on Monday 26th Jan. The initial welcome was good, I was recommended to try cooked oysters (normally I have cold) and they were delicious . My wife had scallops & I had Lieu Noir fish. Excellent. Then grande creme coffee & local whisky. The whole experience with our waiter Genne (hope my spelling is correct) was superb. Well done.

The Plateau Royal is not fresh at all. We paid 70€ for this. We're really disappointed. They should at least gave some side dish aside from the seafoods that's not that much for how much it costs.

They cook very delicious food, especially the seafood platter for two. That is a special feature of the restaurant. Also, the crab and other seafood are partially opened in advance, which makes them much easier to eat. I would highlight this as a distinctive feature of this restaurant. In addition, the staff are very pleasant and English-speaking, originally from Albania. The waiter was very friendly.

Absolutely value of money and one of the best Michelin recommended seafood restaurant in St Malo. We just visited here on a busy Saturday night, which order 2 dinner set. But surprisingly every dishes of the course are excellently prepared, with fresh oyster, and nice fish soup. The coconut based sauce with fish is very appealing, which is somehow unforgettable. Excellent restaurant in St Malo, within β€œintra muros”. We were four and all food was great, notably mussels and oysters, fish as well, as this is place where you can enjoy in having that kind of food. Downtown restaurant, with a polite service. The food was nice (a hearty fish soup to start with, and a very nice grilled salmon with a zesty sauce and a perfect risotto) but the moules very a bit too salty.

We just spotted this place on maps. Thought it looked fun. Pleasant street walk through an unfamiliar part of St Malo. When we got there with our dog πŸ• we asked, in French, if we could all go inside. The owner said that the dog could go in but we would have to stay outside, he was joking, and rearranged tables and chairs to suit. The place is tiny but we were made welcome by owners and local customers. The food was fantastic, the best moules mariniers with fabulous twice cooked chips. My wife had a very tasty scallop gratin with a separate pot of rice. Excellent choice of bottled beers from local craft brewers. Outstanding value!

Wauw, just wauw! Best mussles Ive ever eaten in my life. Incredible, after we finished our first portion we immediately ordered another portion. Great paired with white wine (muscadet). The chips are also amazing! All over, give this place a shot! It's very small, but worth the wait!!!

We (a family of tour) went there while on vacation. The personal was really really welcoming and they could also speak in Italian. The food was exquisite... genuinely one of the best dinners we've had while on vacation. The cozze were fresh and creamy and the souce was also delicious. Even the potatos (pomfrit) were perfect. The place is relatively small, but it's even better because you feel at home and it's welcoming. The background music (70's - 80's rock) set the mood even more. A fantastic experience.

We were extremely lucky to find this tiny place among the many restaurants of Saint Malo. People who are working there are incredibly nice and welcoming, food is more than good. My husband and I felt like we were having dinner at a friend’s house, not in the restaurant. Absolutely unique experience. Highly recommend.

Amazing little cafe/restaurant. The moules frites were delicious and absolutely massive portions. All home made. I recomended the St.Chinian wine to accompany the food. The best meal we had during our weeks stay in st.malo

It soooo nice 😍 very cozy petite oyster bar with positive vibes, chill music and very friendly owner. Not tourists so you can have a table any time. Oysters are very fresh and cold, delicious. Also you can have classic tapas and vine πŸ‘Œ

We went to this tapas bar to try oysters and we decided to order also the raw fish plate and two glasses of white wine. Delicious fish, the Cancale oysters were of extreme good quality and reasonable price (much lower than in my home country). The service was expectional, with a nice French man who spoke English. 100% recommended if you're a lover of raw fish & πŸ¦ͺ! We went there for lunch and left full.

Seaside city, we had the sea bream . So fresh, perfectly cooked. A nice bottle of Bourgogne Alicote complemented the creamy sauce. Very friendly service.

Just like the other comments say, overpriced and overrated. I paid 25€ for an eggplant dish... And the eggplant arrived very lukewarm, so its true that their plates are premade. Also they wouldnt accept my carte restaurant. I dont recommend this place

A true gem of haute French cuisine in the heart of the old town. The menu is creative and engaging, the presentation is exquisite, and the service is impeccable. A perfect choice for an elegant dining experience.

We ate at Restaurant 1934 and overall the food was good and enjoyable, with a nice location that adds to the experience. However, the customer service was disappointing for tourists. The waiter didn’t check on us after serving the food and only returned at the end. It felt like locals were given more attention, which affected the overall experience. If you’re visiting as a tourist and care about attentive service, this may not be the best choice. But if you’re mainly focused on decent food in a good location and don’t mind limited service, it can still be acceptable.

The warehouse-style restaurant overlooking the harbor provides an outstanding view and atmosphere. We had a set menu with cocktails and enjoyed every element of it. The starters, main course and desserts were all delicious and interesting. The interior is very comfortable and refined. The service was outstanding and attentive throughout the entire evening, with all guests.

Food and service are not their best assets, however the fish is local and the prices reasonable. There is a pretty view on the docks which are not as crowded as the old city Intra-Muros, wether you choose the terrace or inside. I took fish & ships. The fish is well cooked, there's not too much oil. The unique sauce served with it is a cheesy sauce which is strangely a bit too solid. The fries don't seem homemade and again no sauces. Overall the meal seems to lack the generosity you'd expect from a fish & ships. The red mullet is accompanied with a hardly edible cuboid.

Friendly and welcoming, nice view as we were sat on the second floor. Definitely recommend asking the waiters for their recommendations, the local beer is great. Great value and the food is delicious. Fantastic lunch/dinner spot.

It has been very challenging for me to find a lactose free fulfilling meal in France and this restaurant did a great job. I was able to enjoy a wonderful salad, delicious bread, and very good sea bream filet with potatoes and veggies. I’m very thankful when a restaurant understands and accommodates lactose free in their menu and delivers a high quality meal.

Would say this is an affordable place to eat with really good and fresh cuisine. I had the pan fried scallops for starters and they were genuinely amazing. Then had moules, which were as good! Extremely good portions, which makes it more affordable. It was a little bit noisy but overall very good experience.

The place was nice with decor and cozy style .. but the beef really tough and raw a bit... i could not even cut by knife .... difficult to eat ! I heard a couple just had dinner here , they said food was good .. but my experience not really as they said .... the dessert i had crème brûlée.. it was nice ... anyway it was not good experience

Tips for Choosing a Seafood Restaurant in Saint-Malo

While the city is packed with excellent options, a little local knowledge goes a long way in ensuring your meal is exceptional rather than average. The dining culture here is tied closely to the sea and the seasons, meaning the best meals often come to those who know what to look for and when to book. Here are essential strategies to maximize your gastronomic experience in the Corsair City.

Prioritize the β€œCatch of the Day” over fixed menus.
The best restaurants in Saint-Malo often write their menus on chalkboards based on what the boats brought in that morning. If a server tells you about a fish you have never heard of, like lieu jaune (pollock) or vieille (wrasse), take the risk. These are often the freshest, most affordable, and most authentically Breton dishes on the menu.

Book ahead, especially for sunset slots.
Saint-Malo is one of the most visited destinations in Brittany, and the best tables with views of the ramparts or the bay are reserved days, sometimes weeks, in advance. This is particularly true during the summer months and during the Route du Rhum festival. If you want a specific time for dinner, do not rely on walk-in availability.

Understand the difference between Intra-Muros and Saint-Servan.
The old walled city (Intra-Muros) is stunning but can lean toward tourist-priced menus. If you are willing to walk ten minutes across the harbor to the Saint-Servan district, you will often find restaurants that cater more to locals, offering similar or superior quality seafood at a more relaxed pace and often a better price point.

Ask about the origin of the oysters.
You are on the doorstep of Cancale, the oyster capital of Brittany. A good restaurant will specify the exact flat (plate) or hollow (creuse) variety and the specific producer. If the menu simply says "oysters" without a region or number, it is often a sign that the restaurant is not prioritizing the hyper-local sourcing that defines this area.

Embrace the β€œPlateau de Fruits de Mer” etiquette.
If you order a seafood platter, it is a marathon, not a sprint. It arrives with a specific set of tools, bread, and condiments. Do not be shy about asking your server how to eat a particular shellfish, such as a bigorneau (periwinkle) or bulot (whelk). Locals respect a diner who asks rather than wastes food.

Dining in Saint-Malo is a sensory experience that goes beyond the plate; it is the sound of the gulls, the smell of the iodine in the air, and the sight of the tide rushing in. The restaurants on this list have mastered the art of pairing these natural elements with culinary craftsmanship. Whether you are warming up with a fish soup after a windy walk on the ramparts or indulging in a lobster as the sun sets over the bay, the connection to the ocean is always present.

Take your time, savor the briny freshness, and allow the rhythm of the sea to dictate your meal. Saint-Malo is not a place for fast food; it is a place for long lunches that stretch into the afternoon and dinners that celebrate the day’s harvest. Bon appΓ©tit.
