12 Best Steakhouses in Carcassonne

Steak in Carcassonne often surprises first-time visitors. While the medieval citadel is famous for cassoulet and duck confit, the city has quietly built a reputation for exceptional beef. Local restaurants rely on quality French breeds, dry-aging techniques, and wood-fired grills to deliver memorable cuts.

Dining in Carcassonne means choosing between two distinct worlds. The lower town, or Bastide Saint-Louis, offers contemporary brasseries and neighborhood bistrots. Inside the UNESCO-listed fortress walls, stone dining rooms and panoramic terraces create a theatrical backdrop for a hearty steak dinner.

French steak culture differs from American or British traditions. Meat is typically served saignant (rare) or à point (medium-rare), with sauces like peppercorn, Roquefort, or béarnaise. Asking for a steak bien cuit (well done) will often result in a drier piece of meat than many travelers expect.

Price and provenance matter here. The best tables proudly name their suppliers, whether the beef comes from Aubrac, Charolais, or Limousin cattle. A great steakhouse in Carcassonne balances charred crust, rested meat, and simple sides such as frites, green salad, or gratin dauphinois.

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer and the Festival de Carcassonne. Restaurants inside the Cité can be busy from early evening until late, while Bastide spots tend to fill with locals around 8:00 pm.

Below is a curated selection of the most reliable addresses for steak lovers in and around Carcassonne.

When asked a local about a good meat restaurant, the answer came immediately and "Le Billot en folie" did not disappoint! A simple menu and great selection of local wine set us up for a start in a great evening. The charcoal cooked meat was cooked perfectly and so tasty, it did not even need a sauce. The great and friendly service not only advised us well but made a great evening even better. The only downside: Having eaten so well and so much there was no room for dessert left... I guess we will have to come again one day!

Wow!!! What an amazing place. When you turn up, the restaurant looks slightly understated but PLEASE enter! Such a lovely ambiance, super friendly service and …… the steak is to die for. Please, if you want an authentic French steak meal, no other place than Le Billot en Folie!!

Loved it here food was lovely, cooked over wood embers.

Had the best steak ever with mushroom sauce combined with a stunning red wine, les pepites de corbiere. Never tasted a better steak, and my friend had the duck, and found id delicious. the cafe gourmand dessert was lovely also.

Delicious varieties of Spanish tapas & flavors i.e.meats, vegetables, appetizers, etc. They have interior and a beautiful exterior seating. We enjoyed the setting very much. The mom and her sons ran the place wonderfully. Such a well respectful and friendly family ❤️❤️❤️❤️‼️‼️.

Quirky restaurant situated a short walk from the castle. Indoor and outdoor seating areas. We went early evening to have a drink first and it felt a bit rushed/pushy with ordering food whilst having our drinks, which personally we didn't like. The menu was varied - various steaks sold by weight. We had grilled octopus too both of which were nice. More on the expensive side of local restaurants. Overall enjoyable evening
Jane Quartel★★★★★
I adored this place. So fun. We had the best seat being able to see all the cooking being done in a tiny kitchen and I was amazed how everything worked so smoothly with the owners and their sons just working together seamlessly. They even made us an order to go. The food was OUTSTANDING. We did not try it but the amount of octopus that came out of the wood oven was astounding wish I would have ordered that. But the meats we got were excellent. Highly highly recommend.

Beautiful garden area to eat. Waiter was amazing helping us choose best steak for our tastes then brought the meat to out to show us before cooking, steak was sublime.

I love here!! You can find fabulous garden after going through the bar and restaurant. We had 2h before our dinner reservation and just wanted to have a drink. So we stopped in without checking any reviews. But actually we were so lucky to find here. The garden is soooo amazing, owner is kind and friendly, and also food was great too. I can understand why some people mentioned about“Maria”(maybe) but she asked us food was good or not, it seems she cared about her customers 🙂 I also love the atmosphere and concept. I don’t want to share my reviews because I want to keep this as my favorite secret restaurant, but unfortunately we live far away from there so I’m sharing it in the hope that you will enjoy there 🙂

We booked a table for 11 over the phone voicemail, which was the only option. When we got there, the owner said he didn't get any message and basically kicked us out, super angry, like we were a huge bother. The patio was practically empty, but there was no way to fix it. We had to leave. Seriously, no service whatsoever.

Excellent food and friendly welcoming staff.

Stopped for a quick lunch. We opted for the cheese and charcuterie boards. They were exceptionally good and all the other food coming out looked good. It was a warm day and we sat outside with our dogs- unfortunately they wouldn’t be allowed inside (why not?). On our ‘visit again’ list.

We stopped on our way to the airport after eexploring the area. We were a bit late for lunch but the gentelman offered us a good cheese/meat sharing plate and it was really good! I am sure their other dishes are just perfect. Thanks

We walked in and they were able to give us a table. It was during an extreme heat wave so we went for dinner when the temperature is more bearable. The service is great. The staff is friendly. The food was outstanding. It is my first time trying the cassoulet and it is unforgettable. The serving is huge I think it will be good for sharing. It is hot / warm so I would maybe go back but not during summer or when there is a heat wave. My husband ordered the gourmet duck breast and he enjoyed it more. We will definitely go back.
Pamela Sullivan★★★★★
This restaurant is a true gem! Somewhat hidden away from the touristy street, the tables are situated under a terrace awning which partially blocks the sun, giving is much needed shade. There was live music when we arrived with a solo guitar player playing Spanish music. The food was outstanding! We ordered a fois gras sampler which we loved! My husband had the cassoulet, outstanding, and I had the confit du canard, again, a delicious and beautifully presented plate! One of our best dinners in France!
Květa Nguyenová★★★★★
We came without a reservation, but we were incredibly lucky to get a table. From the very first moment, the service was absolutely outstanding — warm, friendly, and genuinely attentive throughout our entire visit. The food was, without exaggeration, the best I have ever had in my life. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly prepared, and beautifully presented. On top of that, the portions were so generous that you’ll definitely leave feeling completely full and truly satisfied. This place isn’t just a 10 out of 10 — it’s easily an 11 out of 10. I highly recommend it to everyone. A truly unforgettable experience.
Belinda Goh★★★★★
Located in one of the quieter parts of the Carcassonne citadel, this is restaurant specialises in Cassoulet and Confit. It has a pleasant modern decor with internal and alfresco settings. Service was typically French, professional, efficient and polite but not pandering. The relatively small menu emphasises that they excel in the dishes they serve rather than catering for all tastes. Our trio tried the Traditional and House Special Cassoulet and the Confit du Canard. All were well presented and flavoursome. The Confit was perhaps slightly over salted for my taste but not unpleasant. Generous portion sizes, mean that unless you have a large appetite, a main course is probably more than enough for most customers. Alternatively, you could share an entree and main. I was to full to contemplate a desert, but a coffee to complete the meal was just right. Pricing is in the upper range of the neighbourhood with mains 30-40 euro.
Phil Stevenson★★★★★
Restaurant is inside the Cite. Pre booked an evening meal. Venue is spotless with both covered and open air seating. Staff are knowledgable, friendly and efficient. Portions are significant- particularly if you order a cassoulet. I can highly recommend the ‘Foie Gras’ version. Confit duck leg also hit the spot. Great wine recommendation, although it did come in at €48, so might not be to everyone’s budget. Would happily go again

A very large and well appointed space, with nice cutlery and a large fabric napkin. The cassoulet was very good, with a delicious toasted top. Avocado-shrimp salad was good, but a bit too much mayonnaise sauce. Pâté campagnard was decent. The bread is wonderful. The red wine: Jean-Baptiste Sénat, possibly the house wine, was very nice. Service is good, but staff was a bit overwhelmed.
Frank Shields★★★★★
Excellent service and great food. Had the Cote and was served by a great Waiter Alexia (?maybe) She was very helpful and gave good advice, spoke very good English and was knowledgeable enough to direct us to an excellent wine. The food was outstanding and would happily recommend to anyone. 10/10.
Jean-Christophe Clement★★★★★
We had quite a good experience at Brasserie a 4 Temps; the terrace was great, food was great, service was friendly. The velouté de patates douces was exceptional; light, with nice layering of flavours and a nice, slight crunch from the fried shallots. The rest of food was also very good but would have been perfect with just a touch more seasoning (bit of salt). My cassoulet was quite good but I just had the best cassoulet ever a few weeks back in Toulouse @ Chez Emile. 4 Temps' was a close second. All-in-all, recommended for a great lunch while one waits for everything to re-open in the afternoon in Carcassonne!
Ty Tew★★★★★
Honestly what a great find. The lunch was 3 courses and super affordable. The cucumber salad made me want to learn how to make it at home. Great service as well. Loved.
Per Hammarlund★★★★★
This remains one of the most reliable eateries in Carcassonne, for lunch we almost always pick the daily special which changes with wide variety. The outside terrace has plenty of shaded tables and offers a nice spot for enjoying a blanquette de Limoux glass of bubblies. It is a popular place, so make reservations.

The food was very good. Steak, burger, kids meals. We don’t speak French but they gave us a QR code to be able to place our order correctly. Lots of sauces to choose from which is nice as an American in Europe! Service was typically European but no complaints. They were all very friendly.

Great chain, great restaurant. Came here with a friend as he had just arrived at the airport and was famished. Pleasant staff, wide menu, and very good food for a chain. Delighted by the meal and the visiting Englishman left happy, which is a very good thing! Nothing negative to say whatsoever 🙂

The food was lovely and our server was excellent.

I would be embarrassed to serve this as a rump steak and ask €16.50 for it if I owned a restaurant. From being put into a bad corner table when the restaurant was almost empty, to less then friendly service throughout, this was an expensive way to eat very little. Left most of it. Cannot imagine how it gets some good reviews.
Joviš Ito★★★★☆
This restaurant is just great. From the outside look was expecting a minimized bombastic American fastfood with the cheapest food quality you can offer without having to shut your doors, but was really relieved. I had pommes frites with spareribs, and the food was very good in my opinion. The sfere is very calming, it even has a small playground for the kids, and I didn't have to wait a long time for the food to arrive (15-20 minutes). Only bad thing I could note is the fact that people smoke here, but that's a-total-france experience. 4 stars, definitely recommend!

Hidden away within the stunning medieval walls of Carcassonne, we stumbled across this absolute gem of a restaurant while exploring the historic city, and it completely exceeded our expectations. We decided to try the chef’s special snails and the black pudding salad, and both dishes were phenomenal. While the snail dish appeared deceptively small at first glance, the kitchen certainly didn’t scrimp on the portions—it was packed with snails and surprisingly hearty and filling. The black pudding salad was equally impressive, cooked to absolute perfection and bursting with rich, savory flavor. In fact, it was so good that my partner completely forgot about his beer while eating it! We were enjoying the experience so much—and the food was so super delicious—that we completely forgot to take any photos. If you are wandering around the walled city and want an authentic, unforgettable meal, make sure you track this place down.

We made a reservation 3 weeks ago. They decided to close without letting us know. Because of the weather. Great experience... unacceptable At least letting us know or leave a message on the front door. With all the outside signs saying they will open, is just a very bad service. Woah And they call me dishonest in the response below or in other reviews that were posted. Very low insult to a customer that really had a reservation on a day they decided to close. Unbelievable and dishonest management. Does not even take responsibility for the error they made or just say sorry. Attached the proof of calls we made on June 18.. with a 46 sec call to confirm the reservation and the 3 calls we did to check why everything was closed when we arrived.

Very unassuming. Lovely staff and service. Such memorable food. I’ll be dreaming about this cassoulet for years. Huge and jam packed full of meat. Fabulous flavour. The crème brûlée was one of the best I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you!!

Had a fantastic meal here. The cassoulet was a standout — rich and hearty with meat all the way through the bean base, not just on top, which made it incredibly satisfying. The grilled pork with mushroom sauce was also excellent, perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Very filling portions and a great, authentic feel. Was hoping to try dessert but was simply too full — next time! Definitely recommend making a reservation as the restaurant filled up quickly.
Penny Ford★★★★★
We ordered the Greek Salad which was massive, incredibly tasty and stacked with feta cheese . Also the Entrecote, which was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, pretty hefty size and served with perfect skin-on-fries and delicious mushroom sauce. The waiting staff were extremely kind and caring.
Michael Purnell★★★★★
Having trawled the Internet looking at menus and prices, we decided to eat at this restaurant and we're not disappointed, in fact I ordered the Cassoulet de chef and wow!!! it was wonderful. Top quality at a reasonable price. We would have paid a second visit but they were closed.
Sue Chua★★★★★
Au lard et au cochon offers an excellent dining experience with fantastic quality food. The restaurant is often bustling, so we felt fortunate to secure a table. The service is relaxed, so it's best enjoyed when you're not in a hurry. I would definitely recommend it. For lunch, they offer a two-course meal where you can choose between an appetizer and main or main and dessert. The older male staff is friendly and proficient in English, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. Overall, a highly recommended spot for a satisfying meal in a relaxed setting.

Thank you to all the team at La Barbacane, the food was outstanding it was lovely to sit outside and enjoy the views. I really enjoyed the vegetarian menu, which was light and delicious. Also the signature menu, the pigeon breast with offal sausage was incredible. I would like to say Simeon, our sommelier was beyond all expectations, it was only his first day and he was such a delight. We will visit again , a bientot.
Kelven Penny★★★★★
La Barbacane was the perfect way to finish our holiday in the South of France. After returning our canal boat in Homps, we travelled to Carcassonne specifically for a long lunch here, and it exceeded our already high expectations. The setting alone is spectacular. Access is through the hotel, and once you're shown through to the terrace, you're treated to beautiful surroundings with stunning views towards the medieval cité. What impressed us most was how relaxed and welcoming everything felt. Despite its Michelin pedigree, there was none of the formality or pretence that some people associate with fine dining. The service was professional, friendly and unobtrusive throughout. The food was excellent from start to finish. Beautiful amuse-bouches, expertly prepared courses, outstanding wines and a menu that showcased the region brilliantly. Our group enjoyed dishes including rabbit and swordfish, all beautifully presented and full of flavour. The wine recommendations were equally impressive, with one red proving so popular that we happily worked our way through a magnum over the course of the afternoon. One useful tip for future visitors: decide in advance whether you want the set menu or à la carte, as menu choices need to be confirmed beforehand and the entire table follows the same format. Considering the quality of the food, service, setting and overall experience, we felt it represented excellent value. For around €100 per person including tip, additional drinks and wine, it delivered a genuinely memorable afternoon. A wonderful restaurant, a beautiful setting and the perfect finale to an unforgettable holiday.

We tried the set menu, was great. Excellent service. Enjoyed having dinner in a medieval setup inside.
Mark Bomer★★★☆☆
Grand and smart. Used to have a Michelin star. Trying to get the star back. There’s a mountain to climb. The cooking occasionally provides a glimpse of what was perhaps special years ago. The smoked wild trout, for example, was a fine dish. But mainly the cooking lacked finesse, and one really notices the heavy handed flaws in the very fancy environment (with fancy prices to match). The service was mainly complacent and lazy. Waiters often chatting away together and not looking out for their customers. A ray of hope is the new restaurant manager who is very good indeed. The very grand dining room has a certain opulent charm, but the terrace is a delight if the weather allows. Extensive wine list, and the sommelier gave excellent advice on the local wines. Musak not an issue.
Colette Tanpho★★★★☆
A lovely place richly decorated. Setting was beautiful. Service impeccable. Sommelier very helpful! Servers prompt and doting but not intrusive. The cheese trolley was amazing! The whole experience 5 stars. But… food does not wow you. They had everything else except great food. It was good but did not keep up with the standard of everything else Good to visit to experience a 5star service and setting but don’t expect the same from the food

Very pleased overall. The atmosphere was cozy, and the staff were attentive and focused on making our experience as pleasant as possible. English menus were available, which was very helpful. The food featured typical French dishes and tasted great, with a good range of options to choose from. The only drawback was that the snails were a bit disappointing, as the flavour of the parsley butter wasn’t there. Will definitely come back on our next visit to Carcassonne.

A real Carcassonne gem. We came for the classic and left very happy. The cassoulet was perfect — rich, deep, exactly what you hope for in this part of the world — and we paired it with a local red from AOP Malepère that was both delicious and a steal at 25€. Great bottle, honest price. Marius looked after us the whole evening: attentive, quick, genuinely warm. The atmosphere was spot on too — cozy without trying too hard. Only weak point was dessert. The crème brûlée and the lemon tart were fine but nothing special, and a touch pricey for what they were. That aside, a lovely meal and a place I’d happily return to. Highly recommend for the cassoulet and a bottle of Malepère.
Hans Krijger★★★★★
Perfect food for a fair price. The patio is a lovely place to eat. Inside seems a bit dark. A big applause for the kitchen!

Absolute gem of a place. As with almost everywhere in Carcassonne, the atmosphere is incredible, but this place takes it even further with an relaxed but elegant feeling. The service was incredible, we came without a reservation and got seated no problem, though we came on a Tuesday so I wouldn't nessesarilly count on it. Our waiter was very attentive and eager to please. And the food, the food! So, so, so good! I got the Quail, my companions had the Bream and the ravioli. We all tried each other's and I can assure you they were all unbelievably good. If you're looking for really good food here in town, but don't want to pay the prices at the two Michilin locations within the walls, you can't go wrong here. As for the prices, they're slightly more than a normal restaurant, but quite reasonable for the outstanding quality we received. A perfect experience

A very nice meal in pleasant surroundings. Staff attentive and knowledgeable. Good quality food & drink. We sat in the terrace garden at the rear. Maybe have a bit of soft background music to make it a bit less stuffy.
Melinda Cser★★★★★
Wonderful service, great wine recommendations with the spectacular food and you need to ask for the history of the restaurant and the family who runs it. Sadly, my hike on Saturday got too long so I could not return for a cassoulet but highly recommend the cod and the crème brûlée is to die for.

Choosing the right cut and knowing how to communicate your preferred doneness will dramatically improve your meal. French kitchens use different terminology and cooking conventions, so a little preparation helps you avoid disappointment and shows respect for the chef’s craft.

  1. Learn the French doneness scale. Order bleu for a cold, seared center, saignant for rare, à point for medium-rare to medium, and avoid bien cuit unless you genuinely prefer very well-done meat.
  2. Ask about the breed and aging. Restaurants that advertise Aubrac, Charolais, or Limousin beef, and mention maturation or dry-aging, are usually more serious about quality. Do not hesitate to ask your server for the day’s cut.
  3. Order the sauce on the side. Peppercorn, Roquefort, and béarnaise sauces are excellent, but tasting the beef first lets you appreciate its natural flavor and proper seasoning.
  4. Reserve a table inside the Cité early. If you want a terrace view of the ramparts or a table near the grill, book at least a few days ahead during July and August.
  5. Pair with local red wine. Corbières, Minervois, and Fitou wines from the Languedoc offer enough structure for red meat without overwhelming the plate. Ask for a wine by the glass if you are unsure.
  6. Check the side dishes. Great steak frites is about the frites as much as the beef. Look for places that make their own fries and offer simple, seasonal accompaniments rather than heavy, pre-prepared garnishes.

Steakhouses in Carcassonne reward diners who arrive hungry and curious. Whether you choose a candlelit cellar beneath the old stones or a sunny terrace facing the Canal du Midi, the combination of quality French beef and local wine makes for a satisfying evening.

After dinner, a slow walk through the illuminated medieval streets or along the Pont Vieux is the ideal way to end the night. The city’s steak scene may not be the first reason travelers visit, but it often becomes one of the reasons they return.
