Finding a restaurant that respects Islamic dietary guidelines while travelling through Provence can feel like a challenge, especially in smaller historic cities. Arles, with its Roman ruins and deep connection to Vincent van Gogh, is a major draw for international visitors, many of whom require halal options. While the city is traditionally known for Provençal cuisine like daube (beef stew) and gardianne de taureau (bull meat), the local dining scene is evolving to accommodate a more diverse palate.
Understanding the local landscape is key to a satisfying culinary experience. In France, the term "halal" is strictly regulated and generally indicates that the meat has been slaughtered according to Islamic law. However, in smaller cities like Arles, dedicated halal butcheries and fully certified restaurants can be less common than in larger metropolitan areas like Marseille or Paris. Often, travellers rely on a mix of dedicated Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian eateries alongside French restaurants that offer vegetarian or seafood options.
This guide aims to remove the guesswork from your visit. We have curated a selection of dining spots that either offer certified halal meat, are known for their high-quality halal sourcing, or provide excellent vegetarian and pescatarian alternatives in a city where halal meat is scarce. Whether you are craving a spiced couscous, a grilled kebab, or a fresh Mediterranean salad, you will find a suitable spot to recharge after exploring the Arles Amphitheatre.
It is important to note that restaurant menus and ownership can change frequently. While we strive for accuracy, it is always a best practice to call ahead or speak with the staff upon arrival. Politely asking if the meat is "100% halal" or if they use separate cooking surfaces for halal and non-halal items will ensure peace of mind and a truly enjoyable meal.
Below is a selection of the best options for halal-conscious diners currently available in and around Arles. This list includes dedicated halal establishments as well as venues celebrated for their ability to cater to Muslim travellers through alternative dietary options.

Halal restaurant. Moroccon food. Chicken was ultra soft. Highlight was the Moroccan tea.
Martin Buch★★☆☆☆
The food itself was unfortunately rather bland - Moroccan spices were nowhere to be found.
The service, however, was where the evening truly fell apart. One dish arrived without its side, which only showed up long after the main had already been finished. At the other dish, the ordered drink didn’t appear until the plate was empty. No apology, no acknowledgment, nothing.
What makes this all the more baffling: we were the only guests in the entire restaurant. Not one other table occupied — and yet, private conversations behind the counter apparently took priority over, well, actually serving us.
For a cuisine built on bold flavors and warm hospitality, this was a miss on both counts.

DISASTER!
I asked for a VEGAN tajine.
The woman confirmed it was completely vegan, I asked again after first tasting the sauces, she confirmed the sauce was vegan.
So why was there a piece of CHICKEN ‼️ in my plate, hidden between the vegetables???

Really tasty home-made moroccan food, well presented, and fresh.
Nice attention.
I highly recommend eating here if you looking for oriental food!

My family and I traveled through a couple counties Europe. This was easily the best restaurant we’ve been to in all of Europe by a long shot. Without a doubt. Nothing else compared. I had their lamb tanjine and if I end up on death row this will be the last meal I eat.

An unexpected gem in the heart of Arles!
"We stumbled upon this place by chance and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. The atmosphere is warm and authentic, but the food is the real star. The couscous was incredibly light and fluffy, and the tajine was packed with deep, aromatic flavors. You can tell everything is homemade with love. It’s a wonderful break from the usual French bistro fare. A true hidden gem that I can’t recommend enough!"

This was a highlight meal of our trip. The bastille was so beautiful, I didn't want to cut into it. We also really appreciated the perfect service and close proximity to a parking lot. I could have happily stayed all day watching the world go by.

Stopped in for an impromptu lunch and, despite being told (via a very patient host and Google Translate) that they normally only do takeout lunch, we were promptly seated and served an incredible array — soup, couscous, veggies, meat, Moroccan tea, and sodas, all for €15 each.
I’m not sure when I’ll be back in Arles but I know I’ll head straight to Chez Nana.

We were passing by Arles to visit Camargue and we stopped here for lunch. The lady/owner is a very nice and welcoming person. It was only for take away when we came but she let us eat at the restaurant to not make us discomfortable. We took Royal Couscous. It was delicious and the serving was huge. And the tea was refreshing! Would recommend Chez Nana 🙂

We found this very tasty Moroccan food, Gouts Orientaux in Arles which full of spices, flavor & very authentic by pure accident. Very similar to curry spices. The chef was the Owner's wife. Can't get any authentic than that. The lamb was so tender that it was falling off the bone. Even the artichokes were slow cooked which made them soft & tender. 👏🏾👏🏾👍🏽👍🏽

The lamb couscous was one of the best meals I had in southern France. Super flavorful and filling; the lamb was falling off the bone.

Highly recommend, if you love Moroccan food and need your fix or if you’ve never tried Moroccan give this place a try. Tonight my partner and I had the vegetarian couscous and chicken tagine and they were delicious, I’ll go as far as to say on par with, or better than the food we had in Morocco. It’s a short menu but done incredibly well. Lovely small family run business.

Delicious home cooked stews on a quiet side street. Its a husband and wife operation. The wife cooks and the husband serves. Service is a little slow.
I recommend!!
We had a chicken and a lamb dish.

Rest assured the high rating is well deserved. The owner is friendly and personable. I took the recommendation for the lamb and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. All things considered, the pricing is very reasonable and i would be happy to eat another delicious meal here again on my next visit to the city.

What a gem of a place! We are just delighted to have found this lovely restaurant which serves wonderful Moroccan food, think tagines, couscous and pastillas, all served on beautiful crockery and ALL delicious. The tastes are so fresh and vibrant, and truly North African. We loved every mouthful of our mixed platter for 2….a perfect lunch!
On top of that the whole complex contains a cinema, phenomenal bookstore, where there is also an incredible collection of vinyl and CDs, a stationary and artists’ materials store…unbelievable!
Finally, should you wish to finish your experience on a total high, there is a genuine hamman with an amazing array of treatments on offer.
Needless to say we WILL be back, as Arles is probably our favourite French city!

Food was delicious, little bit to much couscous for our taste. Girl that was working was die trying to explain us every meal that we was curious about but we were lucky thst one of our friends understand french so that could speak and understand everything.
One important thing for all Horeca businesses, learn English to be understood. I understand that French people have a sort of proud to be french but English is much commercialized and everyone speak it.

This was delicious food! Moroccan food 5/5 chicken and lamb dishes with a coke. Very yummy with couscous. My only complaint was that it was hot to sit in the sun with hot food. I think they had umbrella stands, so maybe they could have put an umbrella up, but we also picked the table, so we should have known it would be sunny.
It was on a nice quiet street that looked at the colosseum.

We were visiting Arles and also the annual international photography expo with friends. We could only lunch late and found this place within the area to serve 7 at 1.45 pm.
There's alfresco or indoor dining. We had to sit indoors as there was 7 of us. Staff we courteous, pleasant and nice, our table was ready when we got there. We wanted a quick lunch so it was no fuss we went straight to the main dish with wine followed by coffee.
I ordered couscous and was satisfied with the quality and the portion. The rest of our friends ordered couscous or tajine, one ordered a salad, everyone was happy. It came up to around 20€ per person.
Tips for Dining Halal in Arles
Navigating a smaller French city requires a bit of preparation, but you can still eat very well. Here are some practical tips to ensure you have a stress-free and delicious experience while respecting your dietary requirements.
- Embrace Maghrebi and Levantine Cuisine: The most reliable sources of halal meat in Arles come from North African and Middle Eastern restaurants. Look for couscous, tagines, and grilled skewers. These establishments often source their meat from halal butchers in Marseille or Arles itself.
- Call Ahead to Confirm Certification: Never rely solely on online listings. A restaurant might have changed ownership or suppliers. A quick phone call asking, "Servez-vous de la viande halal?" (Do you serve halal meat?) can save you a wasted trip.
- Look for Halal Butcheries (Boucheries Halal): If you have access to a kitchen or are staying in an Airbnb, consider buying raw meat from a local halal butcher. You can cook your own meals, which is often the most reliable way to ensure compliance while saving money.
- Utilize Vegetarian and Seafood Menus: Provence is famous for its vegetables and seafood. If you cannot find a halal meat option, look for restaurants serving "Poissons" (fish) or "Plats Végétariens." Dishes like ratatouille, soupe au pistou, or grilled sea bass are inherently halal-friendly and deeply rooted in local tradition.
- Beware of "Turkish" Fast Food: Many kebab shops in France are run by non-Muslims and may serve non-halal meat despite the appearance of the menu. Always look for a visible "Halal" certification sticker on the window or ask directly to see the meat packaging if you are unsure.
Arles may not have the sheer volume of halal restaurants found in larger French cities, but it offers enough variety to keep you satisfied during your stay. By combining the dedicated halal grills and couscous houses with the fresh bounty of Provençal markets, you can enjoy the local culture without compromising your values.
Remember that the French dining schedule is quite rigid. Lunch is usually served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and dinner starts around 7:00 PM. Plan your sightseeing around these hours to avoid finding kitchens closed, especially in the off-season. Enjoy your time in this beautiful, sun-drenched corner of France, and bon appétit!
