Saint-Malo’s culinary reputation is built on buckwheat crêpes, freshly caught seafood, and the briny breeze rolling in from the Emerald Coast. Yet beyond the butter-drenched galettes and towering seafood platters, the walled city has quietly developed a deep appetite for the complex flavors of Asia. From steaming bowls of Vietnamese pho to meticulously rolled sushi and fiery Szechuan stir-fries, the port’s dining scene now reflects a global palate that perfectly complements its maritime heritage.
Finding authentic Asian food in a city known for its corsairs and tidal extremes can feel like a treasure hunt. While the narrow, cobbled streets of Intra-Muros are lined with tourist-focused brasseries, some of the most rewarding meals are found just outside the ramparts or tucked away on quiet side streets. The best kitchens here balance respect for tradition with the freshness of local Breton produce, creating a unique fusion that you won’t find in larger metropolitan hubs.
This guide focuses on quality, consistency, and the kind of hospitality that makes a meal memorable. Whether you are a local looking to break away from the standard moules-frites routine or a traveler craving the umami-rich comfort of a good ramen after a windy day on the beach, there is a table waiting for you. We have prioritized restaurants that offer excellent value, fresh ingredients, and menus that cater to a variety of dietary preferences.
Navigating the dining landscape in Saint-Malo requires understanding that many restaurants operate on seasonal schedules, particularly those near the beaches. Reservations are highly recommended during the summer months and school holidays, as the population swells significantly. While some venues offer stunning sea views, others rely on intimate, cozy interiors that transport you straight to the streets of Bangkok or Tokyo.
Below, you will find a curated selection of the best Asian dining experiences in Saint-Malo. The list spans a range of budgets and styles, from quick, casual noodle bars perfect for a lunch break to elegant settings suited for a relaxed dinner. Each entry has been selected for its dedication to authentic flavors and its ability to satisfy that specific craving for Asian cuisine while staying true to the spirit of Brittany.

Food was delicious and the staff is super accommodating to allergies. Overall, great place to grab a bite if you're craving Asian food 🙂

A little bit surprised by the 4.7 current rate. I would say that the people who rated this 5 stars maybe never had actual Pad Thai or Tikka Masala in a Thai or Indian restaurant?
I got the Tikka Masala: my chicken was sadly overcooked and lacked salt. The rice was okay though. My boyfriend's Pad Thai was too salty, even from me. I guess I was expecting more from a 4.7 restaurant.
Service was polite though which is always a good point.

This place was suggested by my airbnb host. I was skeptical at first to try out Asian food at Saint Malo. But because of restaurant lock down I didn't have much option. But I am so glad I tried this place out. The food is great, tasty fresh and good quantity. It is prepared fresh and not greasy at all. The samosas were really different and tasty. But the pad thai was more like just noodle and not really pad thai. Moreover, for takeaway, they provide eco-friendly delivery boxes.

If you have been in France a week or so and need a different flavour then this place is for you. Franco-Asian contemporary food. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here with good service and nice wine. Very reasonable prices for lovely food. The chilli hot was welcome also. Easy to recommend if you need a change of food.

we were lucky to squeeze into the last sitting option rather draughty but the impressions of the food were mixed: it was different enough from the local staples to stand out but not bold enough to aspire to the true fusion spirit

We went there with my mother-in-law who loves coming to this restaurant. Lovely outside seating area with beautiful gardens. But it took two hours to be served starter and main course. Yes it was busy, but with two hungry children and three hungry adults this wasn't great. Food was lovely but portions were small. We gave up waiting for our desert course (we ordered the set menu that was three courses) and just left. We had enough of waiting.
Note that they don't indicate anything regarding ingredients. Our daughter ordered some noodles and they came with lots of crushed peanut. She doesn't have an allergy but doesn't like peanuts. It would have been good to have known this before ordering...

The Restaurant is cozy and the colors of the interieur fit together. So the ambiet is warm and welcoming. Just in front you have free parking spots. The owner "I think" is helping you to choose and speaks good enough english to understand an order. The food is really good and as far as i can say, handmade. The reason why i will not give 5 Stars is only to the small serving sizes. I ordered a starter and a main dish. After this i had to order an other dish. But if you want good chinese food Dao Vien is a good place to be.

I am a traveler from the state who knows no French and was looking for a not so touristy restaurant and in my opinion, i hit a jackpot finding this place. The menu had no English translation, the owner or server spoke no English, so we ordered from google photos and every single one was so good. Like i read from other reviews, the portions were a bit small, so we kept ordering more from what locals ordered next table but literally, every plate was well cooked and flavorful. A lot of local regulars came in and they seemed to know the owners well. Small town fine dining vibe. 2 very hungry souls got very happy after spending 50 something euros. I never leave reviews, but i highly recommend this place.

Visited out of season, so it wasn't too busy. Menu isn't vast but is sensible. Space is nice and clean. The staff were polite and friendly.
The main meal was good, my dish had plenty of ginger in it which I like, but can't imagine being popular with the French.
The desert was okay rather than good.
They also do a take-a-way but I've not tried that.

World class. Food is 10/10. As we were eating we discussed coming back in the future, would even be worth the almost 3 hour train ride from Paris just to eat here for lunch. Ideal. Such a talented chef. Congrats. And thank you.

We had high expectations of this restaurant after driving from Nice over several days and being tired of French food. We had lunch menu plus ravioli in broth. My fish was good but a bit sweet and tasted just like French food (I couldn't taste miso). My husband's dontaktsu was nicely fried but the meat was a bit tough. The dash broth for ravioli had depth and umame but alas, it was too salty.
TTRG★★★☆☆
overrated in general -hence unfortunately over priced. Japanese dishes are authentic and mediocre (at Japan standard) at the same time, which matches its izakaya position but if anyone markets it as fine restaurant that's exaggeration. Not very happy with the rice which was cooked with too much water, and is tasteless, suggest to change to better rice.Sake selection is limited. Disappointed at the service, for lunch menu the hot dish was served before the appetizer even being touched, you have to choose either to risk the sashimi get bad exposing in room temperature for too long or let you hot dish get cold, - had not yet experiencd such in dozens of restaurants in France so far. When changing plates, the waitress put our chopsticks directly on the table, whereas they provide every guest a chopsticks holder, - lack of awareness of service standard.
Yoona Kim★★★★☆
Modern french-Japanese cuisine restaurant. As it’s Izakaya, it’s recommended to order 2-3 plates. Very good service and very interesting to look how they cook. Fency and exotic but little bit expensive.

Otonali was suggested to us by a friend who lived in Japan, and I can only suggest it to you! The Chef's approach to Japanese food was so delicious as it deviates away from what you typically associate with western Japanese food. Go and experience it for yourself! Our only regret was not to bring a bigger appetite.
The staff were also top notch and very helpful! This will definitely be one of our first stops when we return to Saint Malo.

We have struggled to contact Hanoi Station after our stay. Our son left behind his cuddly toy cat, is really upset that he’s lost it and we’re really hopeful they can send it to us in the UK. We are of course more than happy to pay postage. Please excuse the low rating, this is simply to try and get your attention. Maybe you could let us know your email address (not on your website) so we can communicate better using translation. We will of course reverse the review rating if we can get the cuddly toy back. Many thanks, Stu
Edit : We have made contact and are hopeful of getting the cat back.
To give a proper review, this is a good value place to stay, particularly if you have an early ferry. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Language was a bit of a problem for us but that is obviously our fault given we were in France. We got by okay in the end.
2nd Edit : After a few attempts to make meaningful contact including an email with our address and willingness to pay shipping Hanoï Station went quiet again so we've been unable to re-unite our kid with their teddy. I hope I'm wrong and I'm always willing to jump through any hoop you need me to to get the teddy sent to us. Maybe there's some other reason for them not replying, I'm keeping an open mind.
3rd Edit : They’ve made no attempt to return the cat despite direct contact. Pretty poor attitude.

A great find today.
A small Thai/sushi deli.
The shop is small, but the selection isn't necessarily limited; everything looked tempting and delicious. We ordered a sushi platter for €20 and two dishes for around €7 each: cashew chicken (which could use a touch more seasoning for my taste) and red curry shrimp. Everything was very good. The red curry was very pleasant (although I found it a little mild in terms of spice, but that's entirely my opinion). Each dish comes with a portion of rice, and you can heat it up on the spot 👍🏻.
The sushi/maki were super fresh, and it's nice to eat sushi in a generous portion (fish and rice, not just rice and a little fish).
The service was very pleasant, with a very friendly saleswoman.
An added bonus is their use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. And they offer home delivery.
We will definitely return and highly recommend it 🤔🤗

Delightful and charming service with loads of smiles and genuine care for our meal. The Thai food here is the BEST I've had in France. I highly recommend this tiny restaurant either for eating in or their preprepared takeaway options, there were dozens!

We came for lunch at 13:40. Lunch is served until 13:15, but after - you can choose from the variety of Thai foods from the counter and then hit them in a microwave. Although this does not sound quite inviting, I actually really enjoyed the idea. The food was delicious, and I liked the small authentic salads and desserts. The atmosphere is really nice and we were seated in a big wooden table with others- which also felt genuine. Recommend!

The food is okey and they have a good service but I think that the price it was not fair… you have to warm your food on a microwave (first time in my live that I have to do it in a restaurant). I was not expecting high prices (it is a the same prices than a restaurant) and you don’t get fresh food. I will not recommend this place I think that they are better options in the city.

On our visit to St Malo, a break from heavy meals, crepes, butter, sugar. Found Hokkiaido in the suburbs. No booking but accomdated us. Soon filled up. We tried a few things yakitori, enamel, some sushi tuna avocado. Then some ramen veggie and classic charsu with extras eggs. Well worth it. A satisfying meal but not heavy. Well recommended and yakitori was standout.

man, idk. this is just not legit.
first, the attitude - we got there before 7 pm, and they immediately told us they were fully booked but could “squeeze us in” if we finished in 45 minutes. ok, fair enough, but the service felt unwelcoming, which was unexpected. normally, you’d expect the friendly, super-polite japanese hospitality, but not here. the response felt abrupt, like they were in a rush to turn us away or make us order to go.
second, the food - absolutely disappointing and unauthentic. we ordered two ramen and some beef skewers. the skewers? made from thin, frozen beef slices you can get from the supermarket for 10 euros a box, except here, you get two tiny slices for five euros, stuffed with some random cheese. like… why? then the ramen—soggiest, most flavorless bowl of noodles i’ve ever had. feels like they boiled the noodles hours before and just let them sit there until someone ordered.
my friend loves adding vinegar to his food, especially noodles, so we asked for some. weirdly, they responded, “we don’t have chinese vinegar.” but we had only asked for vinegar in general, not anything specific. since we were speaking chinese to ourselves, we talked to them only in english, they seemed to assume we wanted chinese vinegar rather than just any vinegar at all. it was surprising that they didn’t have any vinegar available. 🥸
when my friend confronted them about the soggy noodles, the response was even worse. they straight-up said, “this is how we do it, we don’t do it the chinese way.” like… what? girl, are you for real? the racial profiling was obvious. mind you, we’ve both been to japan countless times—don’t lie and act like this is standard when it’s not. after some back-and-forth, they clearly didn’t want to make a scene, so they eventually made my friend a new bowl.
and about the soggy noodles—so bad i just didn’t eat. i didn’t see the point in asking for a remake since the broth itself lacked flavor, so i just left it. my friend, though, got his new bowl, and for that i will give them two stars instead of one.
the pic is my bowl of ramen and the video is to show how soggy the noodles were—you can literally split them with your 🥢

The worst service I ever received, took more than 2 hours and didn't receive all of what we ordered, instead they served us half of it and said that was all when we clearly counted it and was less 30 pieces than the 62 that compose the hokaido plateau.
One of the tables left because they waited more than one hour before being served, the others had to go get their own drinks and request their food multiple times even going to the counter to demand for it.
Such a shame, could be a great place to eat out but I believe if you order takeout it should be better since they can't mess your order up
Monica★★★★★
A delicious spot for Japanese! It smelled amazing when we walked in. The staff were so friendly. The restaurant was very clean and the bathroom was also very clean. We don’t like ramen much but it was a cold, rainy day so we decided to order it. It was the best ramen. It wasn’t full of starch and cloudy broth. All very fresh ingredients.

Clearly labelled vegetarian options but you have to check with the waiter if they are vegan. I had the veggie (which is also vegan) poke bowl. There were elements on the menu listed that didn’t appear in the actual dish eg the edamame beans and cashew nuts, but that wasn’t too bad, they just didn’t tell you. The portions were quite small and served in takeaway tableware. There are about 3 tables in total as it’s a very small eatery, but you can get a takeaway and sit in if someone leaves in the time you’re waiting to collect it. The service is super smiley and friendly. Little to no knowledge of English so you’ll need some basic French to order, if you’re coming from afar as a tourist!

Tips for Choosing the Best Asian Food in Saint-Malo
Finding the perfect meal often depends on understanding the local dining rhythm and knowing what to look for beyond the menu. The following tips will help you navigate the options efficiently, ensuring you get the freshest ingredients and the most authentic experience possible, whether you are dining inside the historic walls or venturing into the surrounding neighborhoods.
Book Ahead During High Tide and High Season
Saint-Malo is a tourist magnet, especially from June to September. The best Asian restaurants are often small, family-run establishments with limited seating. Calling ahead or booking online not only secures your table but also ensures the kitchen is prepared to give your order the attention it deserves.
Look for the "Plat du Jour" at Lunch
Many Asian eateries in Saint-Malo offer excellent lunchtime formulas or set menus that provide tremendous value. These often include a starter, main course, and sometimes a drink or dessert. It is a budget-friendly way to sample high-quality cooking without committing to the higher prices of the evening à la carte menu.
Ask About the Fresh Catch Integration
Because Saint-Malo is a fishing port, the sushi and sashimi here can be exceptional. Do not hesitate to ask the chef what local fish is available or featured in the specials. The best sushi masters in the city often incorporate local seabass or mackerel into their offerings, providing a fresher and more sustainable option than standard imported tuna.
Specify Your Spice Level
French adaptations of Asian food can sometimes be milder than what you might expect if you are used to authentic heat. If you enjoy spicy food, specifically ask for "épicé" or ask for fresh chili or chili oil on the side. Conversely, if you prefer mild flavors, do not be shy about requesting a sauce on the side to control the intensity.
Check for Lactose and Gluten Options
Asian cuisine is often a safe haven for those with dairy intolerances, but soy sauce contains gluten. If you have dietary restrictions, look for restaurants that clearly mark their menus or call ahead. Many Vietnamese and Thai kitchens in Saint-Malo are very accommodating and can prepare dishes using fish sauce or tamari instead of traditional soy.
Explore Beyond Intra-Muros
While the walled city is enchanting, the best value and authenticity are often found in the Paramé, Saint-Servan, or Rocabey districts. A short walk or bus ride can lead you to neighborhood favorites where the rent is lower, the portions are often larger, and the clientele is predominantly local—a sure sign of a reliable kitchen.
The evolution of Saint-Malo’s food scene proves that a city can honor its history while embracing the world. Whether you are warming up with a rich bowl of ramen after a blustery walk along the Sillon beach or enjoying delicate summer rolls on a sunny terrace, the Asian restaurants here offer a delicious counterpoint to the traditional Breton table.
Take your time to explore these culinary gems. By stepping off the main tourist drag and following the scent of lemongrass, ginger, and toasted sesame, you will discover a side of Saint-Malo that is as vibrant and welcoming as its famous sea views.
