There is a particular magic to seeing Bordeaux from above. The city, often called the "Sleeping Beauty" of France, reveals its true splendor when viewed from a terrace overlooking the ochre stone facades and the winding Garonne river.
While Bordeaux is globally celebrated for its wine cellars and gastronomy, a new vertical culture has taken root. The city’s rooftops have transformed into lush, elevated social hubs where mixology meets panoramic history.
Finding the perfect spot to enjoy a golden hour aperitif or a morning espresso requires local insight. The best terraces are not always visible from the street; they are hidden atop hotels, department stores, and historic residences.
To help you elevate your experience in the wine capital, we have curated a definitive list of the most exceptional elevated venues. Each location offers not just a view, but a distinct atmosphere that captures the sophisticated yet laid-back spirit of the Bordelais.
Whether you are looking for a romantic sunset date or a lively brunch with friends, this guide ensures you see the city from its best angle. Here is our selection of the top addresses for drinking and dining above the rooftops.

Mama shelter is a unique experience always. That was the third time that we stayed in that hotel group. This one probably the best in my life. Very clean very professional staff and always there ready to help you. It’s very rare that staff goes above and beyond anymore but these guys made it look simple. A massive thank you to the staff and I hope that if more hotels copied their performance, hospitality would be amazing. Special thanks to
Mathis and Alexis (can’t recall the rest of the names sorry) that they deserve a pay raise!

I cannot say enough about how lovely the staff is at this hotel. They were lovely and helpful throughout, including when the heat wave overwhelmed the AC, they provided apologies and a fan.
The rooms are a decent size with good shower pressure. Beds are comfortable enough though on the firm side if you like softer mattresses like I do.
The only negative is that the AC did struggle to keep up with the heat wave that hit, but that seemed to be most everywhere in the city.

We came to this beautiful place for our 10th wedding anniversary to surprise my wife with a special event. The evening was relaxed and a complete success:
Perfect location, perfect atmosphere, perfect food (the duck skewers with delicious homemade mayonnaise, and what can I say about the kefta 😍 a real treat!!).
A menu of hot and cold tapas, meat and fish dishes... So many great choices!!
Arriving early, we were lucky enough to get seats.
Beautiful view of the hotel itself.
4 stars instead of 5 for two or three minor service hiccups.
We're already looking forward to our next visit to try the hotel restaurant.
Highly recommended, especially the kefta 😜👍🏼

Our meals were very good, but the platter of oysters was brought out with a pat of butter in the middle. Being Americans, we were not sure what it was for. We were told by our server that it was for bread. I said oh, we didn’t know there was any bread offered. She didn’t say anything and we were never brought any bread. It also took 10-15 min to get a drink each time. I know the wait is a little longer than in the U.S., but it was a bit slow. Other than the service issues, the food was great and the view and experience was great.

Beautiful restaurant, fantastic views, friendly staff, delicious food. We spent a week at the Indigo; each morning had a wonderful breakfast. Sunrise is special if you have an early tour, and sunset happy hours are great. The entire staff were friendly and attentive! Highly recommend.

What a lovely find! The restaurant and views are lovely, the food is very good and the staff are just the best. All the staff are very kind but Kim took exceptional care of me. I am coming back tomorrow or the next day!
Laetitia PHAN★☆☆☆☆
Bad service. We were initially told that as hotel guests we didn’t need a reservation, but upon arrival we were only offered a table right next to the terrace door. This was uncomfortable due to the constant draft, especially as we had a toddler with us.
The restaurant was quite empty at the time, yet we were told no other tables were available because they were reserved. It’s hard to believe that no adjustment could have been made to accommodate us more comfortably.

A very good restaurant with a beautiful rooftop view. The pizza was nice, though not outstanding, and the carbonara pasta was good as well. The starters, however, were excellent - especially the tomato tart topped with a kind of basil ice cream, which was both original and delicious. On top of that, the service was really attentive and friendly, which made the overall experience very enjoyable.
Alina Kralko★★★☆☆
Pasta carbonara was 5/10. I haven’t even finished my plate. Pizza margherita was 6/10. Nothing special about it. I’ve expected better food quality for that price. Cocktails however were very good 10/10. Service is questionable, the waiter who served us was not very polite and my partner didn’t like his attitude towards me. It’s not the kind of service that should be provided in this type of restaurant.

Very bad service! You wait 1,5 hours and still no food !! We cancelled the food finally as the waitress is very rood and doesn’t even apologize!
But the very kind Food and Beverage Manager came personally and apologized and tried her best. I really appreciate her kind assistance and thank her.I am sure she will find a way to have a solution for the waitress attitude as not to happen again

Do not try to schlep from the train station to this restaurant without a taxi. Restaurant is open most of the day but only serves dinner after 7, so don't try to eat anything there before then. I regret going.

The food was excellent from the entrées, the main dish and desert. Of course in Bordeaux, the suggested red wine was exquisite. Ordered the Asparagus with roasted pine nuts, the Cabillaud [white fish] with squid ink linguine, and the financier desert! Definitely recommeding ths place. The view of the river is breathtaking. The service impeccable !

The brunch was absolutely delicious and inexpensive! Loved the place and the food. Unfortunately there was a recurrent issue with the alarm at the kitchen which activated multiple times due to the heat (it was a particularly hot day). I'm extremely sensitive to such noises so that really disturbed me, but well I can't blame them for that. Besides that, I totally recommend this place.

The restaurant has such a lovely ambiance—airy, cozy, and welcoming. The food was generally good, although the regular salad was a bit tasteless. Overall, we enjoyed everything else we ordered, especially the kids’ meals. The service was also great, and the staff were very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience and would be happy to come back.

When we arrived they took forever to seat us, same during serving and took them slightly over half an hour to provide us with a bill and be able to pay for the food
The food was great but not worth all the waiting around. Completely different treatment for non french speakers.

We went to this restaurant to celebrate my sister’s birthday while staying in Bordeaux. Terrible decision.
I informed them in advance that it was her birthday, and yet they still gave us a table at the back of the rooftop. The variety on the menu was very limited and the quality… it’s just not what you expect for the price you are paying.
But the worst part was that I had ordered a surprise birthday cake in advance, which I paid €32 for, and they didn’t even remember. Once our table was cleared and 20 minutes had passed with no cake arriving, I had to go and ask for it twice. They told us it was ready but that they didn’t know which table it was for. That was a lie — it wasn’t ready at all. The had to improvise a cake last minute.
Once the cake was ready they still couldn’t find the table (even though we had reminded them 3 times).
The result: the cake finally arrived at 11.30 (we finished dinner at 10.30), served in a pot, raw and melted. It couldn’t even be cut into pieces, so we had to eat it straight from the pot.
And obviously, it was no longer a surprise for my sister. With all this chaos going on, she obviously realised what was happening.
Absolutely disappointing service from the restaurant. We didn’t receive a single apology.
The best thing about this place: the views.
Ning Leow★★★★☆
It was the rare restaurant that could accommodate a massive group of 20 without a reservation.
Service was friendly but it was challenging to get the servers’ attention, and our food did take an hour after putting in our orders before they started to arrive, so we were left ravenous for a while. My steak was so-so with a rarely dry under seasoned cous cous, but their deviled eggs appetiser and pizzas were great!
John Soanes★★★★☆

This place is amazing. Recommend that you make a reservation because it gets pretty busy. They have English menus and English speaking staff. You can pay by card and cash. Recently had a business dinner with colleagues and clients at Canopée Café in Mérignac and it was a hit. The café's cozy yet professional atmosphere made it an ideal setting for our gathering. The meal was delicious, catering to a variety of tastes, and the brookies for dessert were a unanimous favorite - the perfect blend of chewy and chocolaty. Service was attentive and efficient, contributing to the success of our evening. Canopée Café proved to be a great choice for a business meal, combining great food with a conducive environment for discussions. Highly recommend for anyone looking to impress clients or colleagues.

We, a group of 7 guys, had beers and a pina colada on the roof top outside, on a particularly hot summer Tuesday at 6pm.
Initially the service felt like we were bothering them not having booked a table, even though there was plenty of space. They were nicer and we got along, though I did expect some cool water offered to stay hydrated.
The drinks were pricy but not more than expected from a roof top bar.
The atmosphere was groovy for a Tuesday evening, a football game was playing on the large TV screen, it felt like a sports bar.
We ordered very little food so rating food here is based on a small sample, only a cheese platter, though the mix of goat and other cheese was of quality, the presentation made it even more appealing.

We had a great night out !
The staff is very friendly, and the food is delicious (we mainly had seafood and fish, it was very well-prepared). We also like the atmosphere of this restaurant.
All in all, it was a great experience, and we will come back during spring or summer to enjoy the terrace !
Gina C★☆☆☆☆
Poor quality cocktail made with cheap ingredients and tons of syrup. Both mine and my partner’s were cloying without real flavor. The finger chicken was dark and dry; over fried, probably with reused oil. The serverS, who lacked respect for food and their jobs, ask money directly after taking the orders. Note: Be very careful if you would like to use the hand sanitizer at the entry, or you risk being splashed all over your clothes. The staff, despite being aware of the problem, clearly didn’t mind.

A really lovely setting (it's a shame the weather wasn't great and kept us from enjoying the rooftop). A warm welcome, attentive staff, and high-quality dishes, to be enjoyed with complimentary soft drinks (special mention for the freshly squeezed fruit juices) and/or with a cocktail or glass of wine (at an extra cost). Brunch was accompanied by the beautiful voice of Kamy (see photo for details).
I highly recommend it.

Kevin Jeffrey★★☆☆☆
Our first experience at the hotel was mediocre, but we decided to try again. The food is nothing special, and the service is so poor and slow. We saw one staff member who seemed to be making a great effort, so hats off to her. As for the rest, they need a complete overhaul. The funniest thing was watching the young man walk around with a tray under his arm. I don't know why, but he rarely used it to clear tables, and when he went out with food, he wandered around without knowing where he was supposed to go. The place really needs someone who knows what they're doing.

Came for drinks on the roof top terrace.
It took 35 minutes for the waitress to come to us to take an order for drinks.
The chairs are so low you cannot see over the roof top terrace, so you can’t see the view of the river or buildings.
There is a cheap, dirty, plastic screen along the terrace to stop people throwing cigarettes over the roof top bar, but it is dirty and not clear, so it obstructs/ruins the view from the roof. Hence making the place not worth visiting.
Drinks are expensive, however they would have been priced correctly IF the roof top view was worthwhile, which it was not.

Very disappointed with our experience.
I wanted to order at 6:55 PM to take advantage of happy hour, but I was told that since there was a platter available, I had to order from 7 PM onwards, meaning a 5-minute wait. Ordering at 7 PM means I no longer get the happy hour price! Already very unfair…
Then we tried our mixed platter, touted on the menu for its regional products: it was really not good (and included Président butter, which isn't very regional), with tasteless cheeses, and a sausage served with a knife that was completely useless! We tried asking for a different knife because we couldn't cut it properly. The response: "That's all we have!" Great, so we ended up eating the sausage by making huge slices.
So we went up to the rooftop because we'd seen the chalkboard in the lobby indicating the open terrace with a DJ, but again, there was no sign of him. Thinking he'd arrive and that it might still be too early, we settled in anyway, but there was no DJ in sight. When we asked the staff why he hadn't arrived, they replied, "He's not available tonight and we haven't found a replacement." But why not clearly indicate this on your board downstairs?
Finally, I'm writing to you from my bed at 2:50 a.m. because, to top it all off, we're all sick: diarrhea for everyone, taking turns.
Thanks for this experience, I'll never come back, you can be sure of that!
Baptiste Froger★★★★★
Incredible view of the Garonne River, exceptional sunset…
I highly recommend the UCPA rooftop.
The staff is incredibly attentive. They offer mixed and vegetarian charcuterie boards—there's something for everyone—and their house cocktails are exquisite!
To top it all off, you can play mini-golf or hit a few balls on the driving range if you're more experienced!
CHRISTINE MEGAZZINI★☆☆☆☆
For our first visit to the rooftop, it was a complete failure. Normally opening at noon, the waiter was not only late but wouldn't be operational for another 30 to 45 minutes. We could have understood if he had apologized. On the contrary, he was quite unpleasant! A shame, because the place itself is rather nice.
BNBOOKER LE MANS★★★★★
During my last stay in Bordeaux, I had the chance to discover the UCPA rooftop bar. Words can't describe the view over the city of Bordeaux…
The place is magnificent, the cocktails are good, and there's plenty to eat: platters and snacks. It's definitely worth a visit!

Nice place, great to dance on the floor on the weekend. When we were there only about a dozen people here, mostly just keeping to themselves with a cocktail in hand, but the music was good and there were a few dancing inside on this rooftop level dance floor. Great luxury feel inside but also felt free for drinking and dancing. Again, honestly surprised this place was not packed, but, hey, more for us 😀 ... Just go upstairs and take a look!

Perfect from start to finish! €23 set menu (starter, main course, dessert) at lunchtime. Creative and flavorful cuisine, generous portions, and a remarkable attention to presentation. This aesthetic attention is also reflected in the beautiful decor.
Finally, the waiters and waitresses are all incredibly friendly. All these factors lead me to highly recommend Zéphyr, and I had by far the most enjoyable meal of my stay in Bordeaux!

I celebrated my birthday on August 22nd at Le Zéphyr. We were a large table and we all had a wonderful time.
We also want to thank the staff who gave us such a warm welcome!
The place is beautiful and the food is delicious. I highly recommend it!!

A new rooftop bar has opened at Le Zéphyr!
I had the chance to try out Le Zéphyr's new rooftop bar two weekends in a row, with some really fun themed weekends.
I recommend booking a table in advance if you're planning to go with friends. Smart casual attire is required! You can have dinner and enjoy all kinds of cocktails. They also offer quality cigars. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
At the entrance, you're greeted by someone who shows you to your table. You can even come by car, as there's a valet service available to take care of your vehicle (I experienced this for the first time and it was quite pleasant).
It's a lively place with a very friendly crowd. There's a DJ from 8 PM to 2 AM. I'll be back very soon for another themed evening!
Thanks and see you soon! ✌🏼
Tips for Enjoying Bordeaux Rooftops
Navigating the rooftop scene in Bordeaux requires a bit of strategy, as the French approach to terrace culture is specific. To ensure you secure the best seat and have an authentic experience, consider these local insights before you head out.
Book ahead, especially for sunsets
The golden hour is prime time in Bordeaux, and tables with the best views are reserved days in advance. Most high-end rooftop bars and cafes allow online reservations; securing a spot ensures you are not turned away at the door during peak season.
Dress smart-casual
Bordeaux is an elegant city, and its elevated venues often enforce a relaxed but polished dress code. Leave the beach flip-flops at the hotel and opt for chic, comfortable attire to blend in seamlessly with the local clientele.
Check the weather and wind
Because Bordeaux is close to the Atlantic coast, rooftop terraces can become breezy even on sunny days. Always bring a light jacket or scarf for the evening, and verify that the terrace is open, as rain often forces venues to close their outdoor sections.
Understand the "Aperitif" timing
Most rooftops transition from casual coffee service to a vibrant bar scene around 6:00 PM. Arriving in the late afternoon allows you to secure a seat for both the coffee hour and the transition into the evening wine service.
Explore beyond the city center
While the historic center offers stunning views of the cathedral, venturing slightly toward the Bassins à Flot or the river docks offers a different perspective. These locations often provide views of the modern Cité du Vin and are less crowded with tourists.
As the sun dips behind the 18th-century limestone chimneys, the city takes on a warm, golden hue that is best enjoyed from a height. The gentle clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversation on a breezy terrace perfectly encapsulate the art of living in southwestern France.
Choosing the right rooftop café is about matching the view to your mood, whether you seek the buzz of the city center or the quiet flow of the river. By exploring these elevated escapes, you are not just having a drink—you are gaining a new perspective on the architectural harmony that makes Bordeaux a UNESCO World Heritage site.
