16 Best Bars in Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a city that seduces with its neoclassical architecture and legendary wine culture, but as the sun sets over the Garonne, a different kind of spirit awakens. The "Port de la Lune" is no longer just a stopover for oenophiles; it has evolved into a dynamic hub for mixologists, craft beer enthusiasts, and natural wine purists. Moving away from the stiff formality often associated with French dining, the city’s drinking scene now buzzes with a relaxed, creative energy.

Navigating the labyrinth of ancient limestone facades reveals a treasure trove of hidden speakeasies, bustling terraces, and intimate wine caves. Whether you are looking to sip a meticulously aged Merlot, sample a funky pet-nat, or enjoy a perfectly balanced cocktail, Bordeaux offers a venue for every palate and mood. The challenge isn’t finding a place to drink; it is choosing the perfect ambiance to match your evening.

This guide cuts through the noise of the tourist traps to highlight the establishments that locals actually frequent. We have scoured the historic districts of Saint-Pierre, the trendy Chartrons, and the gritty, artistic atmosphere of the Bastide to bring you the most authentic experiences. From high-end hotel bars with panoramic views to hole-in-the-wall taverns with dirt-cheap local plonk, variety is the name of the game.

To curate this list, we evaluated not just the quality of the beverages, but the quality of the experience. We considered the expertise of the staff, the sourcing of ingredients, the atmosphere, and the value for money. Whether you are a solo traveler looking for a quiet corner or a group ready to party until dawn, these selections represent the pinnacle of Bordeaux’s nightlife.

Below, you will find a curated list of venues that stand out for their distinct character and dedication to their craft. We have organized them to help you find your perfect match, ensuring your time in Bordeaux is spent savoring the best the city has to offer rather than wandering aimlessly.

Very cool bar with exposed block and urban decor. Live sport on and great music, darts, smoking area and photo booth. The design on the urinals was a particular highlight in addition to the wonderful beers and selection of them. Food also looked good but we did not eat here.

This restaurant was great , the food was amazing. I got the beef pho and the spring roles. The owner was so sweet, I’m new to France and still working on my French and he was very understanding and nice. This place made me feel like I was right back home, very calm and relaxing. A real hidden gem!

Lovely spot for a glass of wine or cocktails! Would highly recommend this bar for a night cap! Staff were really good too
Dylan Filkins★★★★★
A really lovely cocktail bar that serves unique cocktails, standard traditional ones, and creations of their own. Service was fast and personal, and they made an effort to talk to their clients and understand what they prefer or simply for a chat. I recommend this place for solo travelers, for dates, or a group of friends. The photo os of their calavados Honfleur cocktail
Kat Wynn★★★★★
Nice cocktails & wine, great ambiance. We were tired from walking around and came here to relax and have a few drinks, which were all good. This was recommended by a local and definitely glad we went. There wasn't any bar snacks available, however the bar man kindly offered nuts instead. Would like to come back on our next visit

A great place to grab a drink. It’s a bar with an extensive selection of rums—when I say extensive, I mean huge. There’s a good atmosphere, great music, and the prices are reasonable.

Rum specialized pub located in a quiet street where you will hear the sound of the church bells and the great music inside. If you take a table outside you can see the that crowns the arc at the entrance of the street

A VERY English pub, they import all their beers from England having said that, the lagers are served cold ❄️ 👍 but rather lifeless aka flat 🙄 , I was lucky and hit it a happy hour

Fantastic spot for an amazing selection of wine in Bordeaux! We were recommended this place and it was an absolute gem. The wine list is really good / amazing prices for the selection. Delicious small plates too, we had the cheese and meats. We had a short wait time for a table but the service was great overall once we sat down
NKNR★★★★★
Le Bar à Vin is a fantastic stop if you're visiting Bordeaux and want to experience the region's incredible wines without spending a fortune. 🍷 One of the coolest things we learned is that the concept is supported by the Bordeaux wine industry, with the goal of making local wines accessible to both visitors and locals. It was such a great way to discover a wide variety of Bordeaux wines at very reasonable prices. The selection is extensive, so there's something for everyone, whether you're new to wine or already a wine lover. The staff were knowledgeable and happy to help us choose wines to try, making the experience fun instead of intimidating. The atmosphere is relaxed, making it the perfect place to unwind after walking around the city. We loved being able to taste different wines, learn more about the Bordeaux region, and enjoy excellent quality without breaking the bank. If you're in Bordeaux, don't miss this place. It's a wonderful introduction to the region's wines and one of the best-value wine experiences we found during our trip.
James Webster★★★★★
Incredible place with spectacular ever-changing list of Bordeaux wines at reasonable prices. You can even order half glasses which is a great way to try more wines. Staff is friendly. Place is beautiful.
Götz Bürkle★★★★★
🍷 Le Bar à Vin has an interesting & always changing selection of local wines from Bordeaux on its list, it covers all styles at pretty good prices. 🥳 🤩 I really liked a light & refreshing Claret called "Conception" by Château Cajus from the Entre-Deux-Mers subregion that won me over immdiately with its beautiful red fruit notes. 🍓 👏 The sweet Sauternes I tried was also excellent, well-balanced & with nice herbaceous, slightly savoury mushroom notes. 🌿 👋 When I was visiting Bordeaux for the first time, some friends who already knew the place suggested that we should go to Le Bar à Vin. 📍 🛋️ Le Bar à Vin is carefully designed & has a fairly casual atmosphere. It can get busy, then the service could be a bit patchy at times, but overall I was pretty happy with everything. 👍 💡 What makes Le Bar à Vin special is that it is run by the local professional marketing & trade organisation Bordeaux Wine Council (CIVB), so it is showcasing everything this leading wine region has to offer. ☑️
Bianca Viegas★★★★★
We sat here after visiting the Monument aux Girondins on a hot day. The staff member was polite, helpful and had a good knowledge of the wines. I ordered two sweet wines, AOC Bordeaux Premier Soir and AOC Sainte-Croix-Du- Mont - Chataeu La Rame. I enjoyed both. Would definitely recommend coming here after exploring the city.

The service is very welcoming and joyful. The atmosphere is cozy and nice. Cocktails could be improved. Anyways,if you're on that corner it's worth to go there
Valeria★☆☆☆☆
This bar has a great location, good ambiance and cool interiors. However the cocktails and the service were really deceiving. Cocktails lacked harmony between flavors and often too sweet (been twice to this bar). Original and rather promising creations on paper but the execution is to be reviewed. Lastly, why i'm I being asked to pay the minute I got served while the rest of the (older) clientele are left alone to enjoy their drinks...very odd treatment regarding younger people
Tiffany Szpylman★★★★★
Best cocktail bar we’ve been to in Europe. Truly craft cocktails made with local ingredients. Antoine the bar manager is awesome. He is incredibly talented and also incredibly kind. The cocktails he makes are beautiful and taste as good as they look! Not to mention the ambiance of the space is very cool - dark, modern, and vibey. We already want to go back!
Claire Pasquier★★★★★
Modern, clean and just the right amount of fun. A good place to go out on Notre Dame street even on a Wednesday night.
Motco★★★★★
Great cocktail bar with atmosphere. The staff are engaged, welcoming and knowledgeable and the list of house cocktails are imaginative and well balanced in styles. The cocktails are well made and taste good. One of the better cocktail bars in Bordeaux. Worth a visit.

Awesome bar to feel the Bordeaux atmosphere! Young and dynamic people all meeting in this original Pirate style bar to share a great night. I particularly liked the special drinks such as the Pirate's knocking-head-helmet shots, that was fun! Staff also was nice, very welcoming and quick enough not to have to wait too long with the large crowd inside. Will definitely come back again when visiting Bordeaux once more!

Wonderful bar! With it's great music (the few times I went there, was playing great rock music all night long) playing at a somehow not high volume and it's original decorations, I found this bar to be one of the best I've been to in Bordeaux. What's also great is the very affordable drinks you'll find there, during and outside the happy hours times (happy hours last until 10 pm). Normal cocktails, and there is a whole menu of them, are at 4 EUR during happy hours and 6 EUR afterwards. I definitely recommend for a good time with friends. Cheers!

WOW! Just wow! We were lucky enough to be staying at The Grand Hotel Francais, where Bar Casa is located, so it became our local for three nights. The person tending bar was meticulous in every aspect of tending bar and his work was a joy to witness. Not only did he make the best Vodka martini I have ever had, but he was happy to share the process, unique ingredients and his knowledge. And if you are a guest of the hotel there was a little discount…highly recommend this bar whether you are a guest of the hotel or not!

Well, I arrived here with my fiance and she is not a rocker by any means whereas I am, and I felt right at home. Excellent pints, wine that she likes and music that I miss and love. If I were in Bordeaux again this would be my first point of call. Service was great as a non native speaker, they understood us perfectly despite my broken french. My fiance only had one gripe, wine glasses are to small🤣. Great spot.

Lord Lion Bar Pub has a lively atmosphere and is a good spot for casual drinks with friends. The selection of beverages is decent, and the pub has a fun, laid-back vibe perfect for unwinding after a long day. However, the service can be hit or miss, with some delays in orders. The food menu is fairly standard for a pub, and while not bad, it doesn’t stand out. It’s a solid choice for a night out, but not the place for a refined dining experience
Jędrzej S.★★★★☆
A nice little pub with both outdoor and indoor seats. Off the main street so it wasn't too busy even on a Saturday night. The music wasn't too loud as well so you could have a proper conversation with your friend. The service at the bar could have been a bit quicker though.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Bordeaux’s Bar Scene

To make the most of your evenings in Bordeaux, it helps to understand the local customs and logistics. While the city is incredibly welcoming, knowing how to navigate the "apéro" culture and the late-night hours will elevate your experience from that of a standard tourist to a savvy local. Here are a few practical considerations to ensure your nights out are seamless and memorable.

1. Master the Art of the Apéro
In Bordeaux, drinking is rarely a standalone activity; it is a social ritual. The "apéro" (pre-dinner drink) typically starts around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM. Many bars offer "planches" (boards) of cheese, charcuterie, or oysters. Do not skip this—pairing a local white wine or a spritz with a light snack is the quintessential Bordelais way to start the evening.

2. Know the Geography of the Night
Different districts serve different moods. The area around Place de la Victoire and Saint-Michel is dominated by a student crowd, offering cheap beer and loud music. For a more sophisticated vibe, stick to the Chartrons district or the streets surrounding Place du Parlement. If you are looking for a view of the river, the Quai de Paludate and the Bastide side offer trendy, larger venues.

3. Don’t Sleep on the Wine Bars
It is tempting to look for cocktails or beer when you go out, but skipping a wine bar in Bordeaux is a mistake. The "bar à vin" concept here is incredibly accessible and affordable. Unlike the formal restaurants, wine bars in Bordeaux serve high-quality, natural, and organic selections by the glass at prices that are often surprisingly reasonable. Ask the sommelier for a "découverte" (discovery) pour to taste something unique to the region.

4. Book Ahead for High-End Cocktails
The cocktail scene in Bordeaux has exploded in recent years, and the best speakeasies are often tiny. If you have your heart set on visiting a specific, highly-rated cocktail den on a Friday or Saturday night, make a reservation or arrive right at opening time. These intimate spaces fill up fast, and unlike the terrace culture, there isn’t always room to stand.

5. Embrace the Late Start
Bordeaux is a city of night owls. While you can grab a drink at 6:00 PM, the energy in most bars doesn’t peak until after 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM. Many cocktail bars don’t even open their doors until 7:00 PM. Have a late dinner or a nap at your hotel, because the best conversations and the liveliest atmospheres happen well into the early hours of the morning.

Bordeaux’s drinking culture is a reflection of the city itself: deeply rooted in history yet unafraid to innovate. Whether you find yourself in a centuries-old cellar tasting a vintage that predates modern France, or in a neon-lit industrial space sipping a cocktail made with liquid nitrogen, you are participating in a tradition of hospitality that defines the region.

The key to enjoying Bordeaux is to slow down. Don’t rush from bar to bar trying to tick boxes; instead, pick a neighborhood, settle into a terrace, and watch the city move around you. The best bars in Bordeaux are not just about the alcohol in the glass, but the stone walls, the river breeze, and the company you keep.
