The Bordeaux coffee scene has transformed remarkably over the last decade. While the city has always been synonymous with wine, a new generation of artisans has brought a fresh energy to the historic streets. From the medieval lanes of Saint-Pierre to the vibrant docks of the Bassins à Flot, specialty beans are now roasted, brewed, and celebrated with the same reverence usually reserved for a fine Saint-Émilion.
Finding a great cup here means navigating a landscape that balances traditional French café culture with modern, Antipodean-inspired brewing methods. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to work, a sunny terrace to people-watch, or a serious flat white to start your day, Bordeaux delivers. The quality of the milk steaming and the precision of the pour-overs have reached an impressive standard.
This guide focuses on venues that offer more than just caffeine. We have considered the atmosphere, the quality of the sourcing, the skill of the baristas, and the overall experience. These are places where you can taste the difference between a commercial blend and a single-origin bean roasted just a few kilometers away.
It is also worth noting that Bordeaux is a highly walkable city. Many of these spots are clustered in the center, making it easy to hop from one to another. However, we have also included gems in the Chartrons district and the up-and-coming Right Bank, ensuring you are covered no matter where your explorations take you.
The following selection prioritizes independent roasters and owner-operated venues. You will find minimal chain-store monotony here; instead, expect personality, passion, and a genuine desire to share the craft. Most of these establishments also offer light bites, pastries, or brunch options, making them perfect anchors for a day of sightseeing.
Here is our curated selection of the best places to sit down, warm up, and refuel in the heart of wine country.

Delicious food and specialty coffee in a really cozy and cool spot in Bordeaux. Staff is super friendly and the overall vibe of the cafe is so nice! you can either sit in the main room or next to it, where you can see the bakers cooking. Coffe was amazing (am i’m very picky with coffee), i recommend the cold brew. The guiness cake is out of this world ❤️ i’ve never tried something similar. This is a must if you visit/live in Bordeaux 😍
Mario Mendez★★★☆☆
Come here for the pastries and the coffee, don't come here for the food. The food is not seasoned, eggs were plain, and pancakes had no flavor. Bacon was good and crispy. Coffee wasn't hot when served.
People were nice and service was good (not above and beyond).
Robert Kwok★★★★☆
Located right next to Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux, this cafe serves a a very soothing Americano. If being critical (and why shouldn’t we be), the tables and chairs are a bit awkward for the small shop. Service is friendly despite the barista was flat out during the visit.
Jo Wong★★★★★
Found this nice little cafe while we’re looking for breakfast place nearby us. Place was a little small. Ordered latte and matcha latte. Both were above average in taste. Then we ordered their bacon with fried egg pancakes and also the eggs benedict classic. Food was good. Will definitely return in future.
Kyran Chonel★★★★★
Nice and cozy place.
Best Eggs Benedict in town.
Hearty meals at fair prices.
Very pleasant staff. Highly recommend!

The coffee is of excellent quality at a normal value price. This place is a gem located in a quiet street in the center of the old Bordeaux. The staff were very nice and smiling. The place has limited seating but they also offer to go cups if you don’t have the chance of seating at one of the tables outside.

Solid specialty coffee! Really enjoyed my cup. Sadly, the pastries were pretty meh — they definitely could be better. Overall, a nice place for coffee lovers, but the snacks need some work

🤩 I was very happy that a lovely local from Bordeaux recommended L'Alchimiste Café Boutique to me on my first day. 👍
☕️ The staff are really nice, the coffee is great & the pastries are delicious too. 🥐
🙌 I ended up going there two or three times during my short stay in the city & will happily go there again on my next visit! 😊
Kaman Kwok★★★★☆
Recommended by the hotel concierge and it does not disappoint. We order the butter croissant, chocolate croissant, and chocolate fondant, latte, mocha and hot chocolate. The drinks are great - not too sweet. If the pastry can serve warm that would be perfect. Server speaks great English. Overall very enjoyable experience.

Fantastic coffee and pastries!
We tried several of the pastry options, the coffee and the hot chocolate. Very high quality and nice staff! Fully recommended when you are looking for a good coffee spot in Bordeaux!

Breakfast was good. Very friendly staff. Just a tiny little space, great coffee. Limited pastries but they do have yogurt with fruit 🍓🍑🍓 which we were after.

An excellent coffee shop! I’ve been coming every morning to enjoy a latte and a chocolatín and I’ve enjoyed the service every time.
Zac★★★★★
I loved the Croque Monsieur and that it was with the stronger cheese, just the way I like it, with the side of the carrot. The coffee was great! And absolutely wonderful service with kindness and smile ☺️ the lady was incredibly efficient on a busy morning and very nice! Thanks for the delicious cookie! This was our last stop in Bordeaux before heading to the airport and it was the nicest experience we had. Highly recommended!

During our visit to Bordeaux, we stopped at this charming little place in the heart of the city. . The service was excellent. They really took care of us and showed genuine interest. They made us an amazing coffee, and I had a delicious salmon bagel. The vibe was the best we encountered. I highly recommend it without hesitation!

Ala Yazdani★★☆☆☆
This place was a huge disappointment.
The matcha tasted like plain milk, with not even a hint of matcha flavor. The iced tea had absolutely no flavor either, but the flan was really good.
The servers were nice, but there was one hostess who was extremely rude and seemed very angry.
I definitely do not recommend the drinks.
Mia★★★★☆
Happy to have stumbled upon this place--the coffee alone makes it worth the stop. I tried the cold brew (on their menu as "iced coffee" which can be a little confusing). They are a roastery and had several different types of beans when I went: Pérou (for the cold brew), Amour du Tokyo (ironically, a Latin American blend), and an Ethiopian one.
With the exception of the baristas, who were very kind, The service wasn't very friendly. I waited for a table for one, and was ignored by 3 different servers who all saw me but didn't offer me a table, when they offered it to couples. When I asked about the menu, the cashier didn't seem to know or didn't want to be bothered to tell me.
I went next door to get a croissant and their flan, and they have a different selection which looked delicious (they have several different flan flavors, including a Persian pistache). I had vanilla and tonka. Having tried some of the best in the world, the flan at Books & coffee was probably the second best flan I've ever had.
The atmosphere itself lends itself well to either a solo date with a book or with friends. It was very cozy and peaceful, even on a Sunday at midi. Overall recommend.
Roam-n-Plate★★★★☆
Their pastry selection are good and delicious, some of them are quite unique. Coffee latte is considered good, but it can be better.
Waiyi Chung★★★★★
The restaurant is well decorated, staff are friendly and food is healthy. I was happy to see a print of the painting Nighthawks in the room because I just learnt about the artist Edward Hopper recently. The menu is flexibly priced for 1-3 courses. We had a egg and mushroom cocottes, piri piri chicken with vegetables, scallops and two coffees. I will come back for some dessert next time when I visit Bordeaux 🙂

A true haven for coffee lovers! ☕️❤️ Café Piha is all about excellent coffee, paired with a simple croissant or pain au chocolat if you fancy a snack.
You can choose from four different coffee beans for either your espresso or milk drink. They truly master the basics ⭐️ the Flat White was spot on and costs €4.50.
Extremely friendly staff, and the unisex restrooms were super clean. Highly recommended!🫰🏻
Julia O'Reilly★★★★★
They have three coffee beans to chose from, I chose the rounded flavour and it was devine. Best coffee I had in years!
Great service, brilliant music and overall chill vibes.
We came to eat but there was no food menu only a very limited selection of cakes.
Dog friendly and brought a bowl of water for her.
The Curated Stamp★★★★★
Excellent coffee and probably the most delicious Citron cake I’ve ever tasted. Friendly customer service and overall good vibes place to relax and enjoy your beverage. They offer plenty of indoor and some outdoor seating.
Ashley Gasque★★★★★
This is our favorite coffee shop in Bordeaux. The coffee drinks are amazing, the coffee beans for sale are delicious and well curated, and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.
Silas Schwarzer★★★★★
This is a great place to have a nice afternoon break and enjoy a perfect coffee!
They really know their coffee and if you have questions about the different blends don’t hesitate to ask.

A quality brunch full of flavor. An amazing vegan plate option. Impeccable service. Adorable décor.
Already my second time back this month. Highly recommend!

Very Bordeaux (tourist version).
Located in a quiet by-lane of the city, I was lucky to get in early and find a table. As a result I could spend some time enjoying my breakfast. Otherwise it gets busy very quickly through the day.
I found the menu to be varied, sumptuous and delicious. I wish I had gone in with a larger appetite. Perhaps, some other time.
Justin Medwid★★★★★
Brunch menu was incredibly generous, each item was delicious and very well presented. We would recommend getting a reservation as the place seems very busy during peak hours but the staff is very accommodating and nice even with constant action. Highly recommend, come hungry!
Benedetta Antognoli★★★★★
Great spot for a sunday brunch with friends.
The brunch menu has limited savoury selection, but I highly recommend the bagel.
The place was very crowded and the ordering process wasn’t the easiest. Additionally, I wish we were served the savoury dish before the sweets.
Food was very good and the beverages too.
The place is very cute and it feels cosy.
Rema Gouyez Benallal★★★★★
Absolutely superb food and service. Not a boring bunch of just eggs and avocado. A culinary surprise with each part of the plate! The baked goods are SO delicious and the brunch menu is well worth the visit for. Cosy and fun setting with pretty decor. Owner Helen explained to us why the shop was called Peter and it was because she wanted guests to be enchanted and feel like a child not a grown up in the space. Aptly named after Peter Pan.

Popped in today for a coffee and blueberry muffin having read a couple of reviews which are 100%! accurate! A warm and friendly greeting by the owner. Spoke exceptional English. Highly recommend.

Visited this wonderful cafe on a whim. The coffee and fresh orange juice was great but what made the experience exceptional is the service. The owner was very kind to us and was very welcoming to his beautiful cafe. The cafe is clean and comfortable, 5/5 would recommend.

One of the best coffees we had in Bordeaux.
The service was extraordinarily nice and helped us decide on our drink and snacks.
The Brookies (a mix of a cookie and a brownie) were a delight.

The worker was very kind. He recommended the Blueberry Muffin and it was incredible. I also enjoyed my hot chocolate and the cathedral view.

Excellent café noisette (piccolo for Aussies) and friendly proactive service from the owner who even suggested activities for us to do in town with kids. Simple decor. Central location. Great for a quick excellent coffee if you're waiting to climb the nearby tower or visit the cathedral.

La Douce Parenthèse is a lovely little spot in Bordeaux. The place is small but very charming, with a cozy and calm atmosphere. Their tartes are really good—fresh, well-balanced, and clearly made with care. Everything feels fine and thoughtfully prepared. The staff is very helpful and kind, which makes the experience even more pleasant. A great place for a sweet break or a light bite. Definitely worth a visit.

Cozy and charming in the heart of Bordeaux. The quietest little spot right between two of the busiest walks--Rue Sainte Catherine and the river walk--in Bordeaux. So sweet and calm, almost like you're at a friend's place. And dog friendly: they even brought my little girl a bowl of water. Excellent coffee and cakes. Love this place.
Paula Sims★★★★★
What a superb find. A lovely little cafè, and a warm welcome A choice of 3 quiches today. We chose the vegetarian one with carrot puree and blue cheese, with obviously home made fresh pastry, and a very grown up salad. Absolutely delicious!! And a lovely coffee with oat milk to follow including a free mouthful of one of their beautiful home made cakes. Highly recommended.

They roast their own coffee at La Pelle Cafe and have some amazing flavours. The barrister was really helpful and happy to explain the difference in the roasts and beans. Great to have a choice of beans and brews. Definitely one of the best coffee places in town.
Robert Kwok★★★★☆
Apparently their long black is a americano with two shots (meaning americano has one shot). Decided to save my caffeine quota for the day and ordered an americano. Coffee is a standard affair.
Carsten Schönberg★☆☆☆☆
If you have time and time is not important for you, this is your place. When every employee is finishing talking to each other and have done their cigarette break they may serve you. After sitting 15 minutes at the table and been told to wait for the waiter, he was willing to serve you. No menu, you have to go inside again we ordered a Latte and a Cappuccino. The quality is decent, but not better than every average German,Italien or other countries coffee place. The ambiente is lower than average. I think you must be am American to hype this place.

Lovely people and nice drinks, we had a coffee and chocolate with art included and a tasty piece of cake. They took good care of us all along, thank you!

My preferred cafe in Bordeaux! The coffee beans are freshly roasted on-site, and you can choose from any type of coffee. Also, there is a very tasty matcha latte. The place is perfect for breakfast or brunch - avocado toast is just yummy! Only one minus - very often there are no free places ))

I was slightly disappointed by the vegan and gluten free option having items removed, but not replaced and therefore no great protein source with the meal. It was very tasty, but, just needed a bit more input to be really great.
The cafe was very cute though and had a nice atmosphere.

Easy to notice location, everything fine, very welcome for tourists. We take a break before continuing the trip to Bordeaux Cathedral. Good coffee anyway.
james008★★★☆☆
I got a decent flat white with oat milk. Nothing wrong with the coffee itself. What puzzled me, however, was that the espresso was first collected in two small glasses and then poured into a takeaway cup. That extra step can't be doing the flavour any favours and seems to take away some of the depth and character of the coffee.
I was also given a lid on my cup without being asked. That felt a bit odd. A lid should be something the customer can request if they want one, rather than the default. In many cases it's simply unnecessary and creates additional waste. Apart from that, the service was fine and the coffee was perfectly drinkable.

Sitting at the back of this cafe is so soothing on a hot day. Not only is the A/C flowing, nice coffees too.
A batch brew is not always my default choice as I want to experience what the barista has to offer on the spot and not something pre-made. However, the batch brew that I had completely changed my view, it was very flavoursome (despite it was poured from a flask).
Had a flat white during my second visit. It was as soothing as the A/C and more. The milk texture was just right and it had the best latte art in Bordeaux (although I have only visited half a dozen cafes in town). It was one of those drinks that you couldn’t put the cup down until you down the whole thing.
Nicholas Tong★★★★★
Moko coffee is a true coffee institution. With an extensive pourover menu, there is definitely a coffee to suit every palate. I visited several times during my visit to Bordeaux and ordered different pourovers, only to be blown away every time. If you’re here to visit or stay in Bordeaux, I highly recommend.

Great and spacious spot. I tried their house granola and breakfast burger, it was amazing. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the oat milk flat white I had. I think it was still too strong for a flat white but maybe that’s just me!

Authentic and delicious! If you like Korean desserts, you must go to this cafe. The Yuzu tea, strawberry cake, and Bingsu were all fantastic! Note: you can probably share the Bingsu. It’s big enough for two people.

The Korean Tea with Yuzu is so good and refreshing. The bingsu is so fine and nice. Cozy area to sit down on second floor and come with AC. Overall such a lovely Korean café.

Very delicious cakes and great coffees—also with iced option. The cafe was so cozy. We would definitely love to try other cakes in this cafe if we visit Bordeaux next time. (You must try iced café latte or iced americano here during the summer!)

We selected Café Joyeux as it was out of the main center of Bordeaux and next to the river. We didn’t know what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the lunch and the service. This cafe employs staff with mental disabilities and under careful supervision they prepare and bring your order to you, all with a smile and feeling good about themselves when people thank them. What a change to see.
We went for the lunch menu which consisted of a starter, a simple main, or main and a pastry plus a drink. The gazpacho soup is the best starter, and the Croque Monsieur vegetarian and a vegetable tartin were both very good. We would pass on the pastry for dessert and go for the soup next time.
We went for iced coffees for the drink.
The location is excellent with plenty of outside seating giving good river views.

We stopped by for a quick drink on our walk along the river. I had a lovely lemonade and an extremely tasty coconut macaroon! Thanks for the great service and the much needed sugar hit.

Cool spot looking with a terrace looking over the river with a tasty chocolate croissant. I got the Americano which had good flavor, but was spilled a bit when it was brought out. You can sit here and enjoy the breeze while locals get in their exercise. Good prices and quality food/drink.

Tips for Enjoying the Bordeaux Café Scene
To get the most out of your coffee tour, it helps to understand the local rhythm and etiquette. While Bordeaux is welcoming, the café culture operates on a slightly different clock than what you might find in London, Melbourne, or New York. A little local knowledge will ensure you find the right vibe at the right time and avoid the tourist traps.
Go Early or Go Late: The French lunch break is sacred. From roughly 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, cafés that serve food will be packed with locals eating. If you want to linger with a laptop or have a quiet chat with the barista, aim for 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, or after 3:00 PM.
Embrace the "Noisette": If you find a traditional French café but aren’t ready for a large Americano, order a noisette. It is essentially a macchiato—an espresso with a dash of milk—and it is the standard way locals drink their coffee in brasseries.
Check for Roasting Days: Many of the specialty shops on this list roast their own beans in-house or nearby. Ask when the beans were roasted. Buying a bag of beans roasted within the last week is the best souvenir you can take home from Bordeaux.
Look for the "Torréfacteur" Sign: When walking around, keep an eye out for signs that say Torréfacteur or Café de Spécialité. This indicates the venue takes roasting seriously and is usually a cut above standard bar-cafés that serve mass-produced beans.
Don’t Skip the Brunch: Bordeaux has an excellent brunch culture, but it is often a sit-down affair that takes time. If a café offers brunch on the weekends, book a table in advance. The quality of the food at these specialty coffee shops is often just as high as the coffee itself.
Tap Water is Fine: In France, asking for a glass of tap water (une carafe d’eau) is completely normal and free. If you are ordering an espresso to drink standing at the bar, don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle of water; just ask for the carafe.
Respect the Space: While many modern cafés are laptop-friendly during the week, some smaller boutique venues ban computers on weekends to maximize seating for diners. Look for signs or ask the staff before setting up your mobile office on a Saturday morning.
Bordeaux offers a sensory experience that goes far beyond the vine. The city’s baristas have successfully created a culture that honors the French tradition of the café as a social hub while pushing the boundaries of what coffee can taste like. Whether you are starting your morning in the historic center or winding down after exploring the Cité du Vin, these independent shops provide the perfect pause.
Take your time, chat with the owners, and let them guide you through their menus. The passion found in these small spaces is the same spirit that drives the winemakers of the surrounding vineyards. It is simply expressed through a different kind of bean.
