Finding a reliable pharmacy in a new or busy city centre can often feel stressful, especially when you are dealing with a sudden headache, an unexpected allergy flare-up, or a sick child. In the vibrant heart of Alicante, the dense network of streets is filled with professional health services, but knowing exactly where to go saves you precious time. Whether you are a resident running daily errands or a tourist who forgot essential medication, having a mental map of accessible farmacias is vital.
The Spanish pharmacy system is highly regulated and trusted, offering a level of care that often goes beyond simply dispensing pills. Pharmacists here are highly trained healthcare professionals who can diagnose minor ailments, recommend over-the-counter solutions, and advise on whether a doctor’s visit is truly necessary. In Alicante’s city centre, most staff members are accustomed to dealing with international visitors and expats, making communication easier than in more remote areas.
Alicante’s central district is quite walkable, stretching from the Explanada de España and the marina up to the Mercado Central and the bustling commercial zones around Avenida Federico Soto. Because the area is compact, you are rarely more than a five-minute walk from a green cross sign. However, not all pharmacies have the same stock levels or opening hours, particularly regarding specialized dermatology products or baby formula.
Understanding the local system of "Farmacias de Guardia" (on-duty pharmacies) is essential for anyone staying in the city centre. While standard operating hours usually run from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, the city operates a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage. The specific pharmacy handling night shifts or Sunday hours changes daily, but the list is always posted on the door of every closed pharmacy and available online.
For visitors, navigating the Spanish healthcare system can be daunting, but the pharmacy is often the fastest and most cost-effective first stop. Unlike in some countries where you must visit a doctor for basic antibiotics or strong painkillers, Spanish pharmacists can dispense many effective treatments after a quick consultation. They can also help you locate the nearest urgent care center (Centro de Salud) if your condition requires more advanced medical attention.
This guide focuses specifically on the core of Alicante, highlighting locations that are easy to find near major landmarks. We have prioritized pharmacies known for their central locations, helpful staff, and consistent stock of common medications. By familiarizing yourself with these spots, you can ensure that a health hiccup doesn’t ruin your day exploring the beautiful Costa Blanca.
Below is a curated selection of trusted pharmacies located within the heart of Alicante City Centre, offering professional service and convenient access.

As the only pharmacy open on Sundays, being in a seriously „critical health situation”, we wanted to fill an international prescription, which was not met with the understanding of the pharmacist, who did not understand that there is such a thing as an international prescription. The lack of knowledge and competence in a forgein country makes You feel helpless as sittuation Was critical and as a result my wife spend that evening with 39,5 fever. What is even more shocking, the next day (Monday) we filled the prescription without any problems at another pharmacy. As a result are very disappointed with the lack of empathy and competence of this pharmacy emplyee. To sum up - definitely do not recommend it, and will look for justice with evidences in a court regarding violation of international health law.

My daughter was sick on a Sunday, and I was able to get get a decongestant for her, and also tests for COVID and Influenza A and B. It was a 4 mile walk to find an open farmacia, but was worth it. Btw, we were clear, but the dissolving powder decongestant really helped my daughter. My Spanish is weak, but they worked with me and were very kind and spent the time required to understand what I was looking for.

I don’t know when it was 24hr, but it’s no longer 24hr now. I got food poisoning and just came back from this pharmacy at 6am. I saved my last bit of strength bearing the stomachache and went to this place. It wasn’t open!

If you need anything 24hr this is your spot and the owner speaks english and very friendly. They have a natural supplemental section but wish it was more wider with vitamin herbs etc but maybe in the future.

I purchased a face mask ( Caudalie hydra, pink bottle) at this pharmacy two days ago (photos attached). Today I opened it for the first time, and the smell is very strong and unpleasant, like a very old or spoiled cream. I am familiar with this product and it normally has a light, pleasant scent, but this one is clearly not in good condition.
It is very disappointing, especially since the mask cost 23 euros and I expected better quality and proper storage conditions. It seems the product may not have been stored correctly.
After this experience, I would not recommend buying other cosmetic products here. I hope the pharmacy will look into this situation and contact me to resolve the issue.

The pharmacy is open 24/7 and has a quick supply line for pre-ordered medicine. We were collaborating with them during our fertility treatment, visiting every other day to obtain expensive medicine which has to be administered daily and at correct times. On the day the power surge hit the complete Spain, the pharmacy was no exception: no lights, no phone line, no internet and no card payments. Although they had the medicine we needed, they did not accept to release it without being paid in cash. We only had a bank card and begged them to recognize an extreme situation and help us. We have even offered to leave our passports with them as collateral, so that we can't leave the country and they can easily report us to the police if we don't show up to pay when the system is up, but the owner didn't want to 'take the risk'. Instead she had us running across the city for a functional ATM machine. 4 hours later we did find one: at the airport. We were late that day with the administration of the medicine, still feeling grateful we made it at all. They have knowingly almost put a stop to our fertility treatment and in the age of AI, never once took the effort to translate anything to English.
It makes me sick to have to come back there for additional medicine. Luckily we don't have to, because they are not 'the best', and most certainly are not 'the only'. Maybe they have the medicine, but they are definitely missing the humanity.

It's a regular pharmacy with regular staff, but it's the only pharmacy in the city center where I can find the magnesium supplement I need.

This centrally located pharmacy provides excellent service. It's close to my home, so I go whenever I need my medications, which are several. They've listened to me and treated me wonderfully.
Semipez★★★★★
I read a review saying the service was terrible... The truth is, the lady is a bit odd, but on the other hand, she does everything she can to get you what you need and provide good service. In that sense, I find her very professional and dedicated. And for homeopathy, I think it's the best in Alicante.
EDITED 2024: It's no longer run by the same lady. They've renovated, and now it's a modern pharmacy (it's a shame the facade's decoration is gone; that's how things are these days). I still buy homeopathic remedies there; if they don't have it, they get it for you quickly. The service is excellent, and they're very friendly.

Contacted this pharmacy as to flu vaccine. We were able to make appointment for the next day. Excellent service with plenty of staff to assist their clients. Several English speaking members to attend to us expats. Only pharmacy I have found that does blood work and vaccines. Great one stop shopping. Very well stocked in regards to products and plenty of seating if you need to wait for your turn. Everyone was helpful and made our visit hassle free!!

The best pharmacy in Alicante. I'm lucky to live nearby. The very first time I came here the consultant Fatima was ready to help and gave me such a professional consultation regarding my problem with headskin. She recommended the course and it works!
English speaking consultants are very nice and polite .
Each time I visit this pharmacy it feels like I have a premium appointment with health coach.
It's very comfortable that I can order the medicines by WhatsApp. Everything I need will be ordered and available the same day.
Thank you, Fatima and all the team for your professionalism!

I went because I wanted to buy cosmetics for my wife, and I was lucky enough to be helped by Diana, who gave me wonderful advice. I was completely clueless, and she guided me through everything with great patience and professionalism.
Thanks to Diana, I made the right purchase, and my wife was thrilled.

They don't acknowledge their mistakes. The customer literally pays for their errors. They couldn't care less if you're a long-time customer or not. They do absolutely nothing to try and fix a mistake they've made; they just shrug it off. Zero empathy, and I could go on describing situations, but it's not worth wasting any more time talking about them. And I can document everything I'm saying.
Francisco Reverte de Luis★★★★★
A fantastic pharmacy, well-stocked, and if they don't have it, they'll get it for you within hours. Very professional, run by the Garcia Bovet family, four pharmacists who exude professionalism and friendliness. Always ready to give you the best advice, including telling you which medications with the same composition and effectiveness are the cheapest so you can buy them. Since I arrived in Alicante, it's been my go-to pharmacy, and I'm completely satisfied.
Juan Luis Cano★★☆☆☆
In my experience, they're not very friendly. I try to go to other pharmacies where the service is better, even though this one is only a one-minute walk from my house.
We also had a bad experience buying a can of formula for around twenty euros, which we wanted to return the next day, unopened of course. They told us no, because of Covid. I don't see the point, except perhaps to avoid losing the sale that time.

Greetings to my colleagues from Alicante,
Visiting the oldest and most beautiful pharmacy in the city was a truly special experience. Farmacia 1878 is not just a pharmacy – it is a place where history, tradition, and professionalism come together in the most elegant way. From the stunning interior that preserves the spirit of past centuries to the impeccable organization and warmth of the team, everything reflects dedication to the profession we proudly share.
As pharmacists ourselves, we deeply appreciated the balance between heritage and modern pharmaceutical care. The level of expertise, kindness, and attention given to every visitor speaks volumes about your commitment to patients and to the values of our profession.
It was inspiring to see how pharmacy tradition is preserved in Alicante, and we truly felt welcomed as colleagues and friends.
We would be delighted to host you in Belgrade and it would be our great pleasure to welcome you as the oldest pharmacy in private ownership in Belgrade, Serbia.

My pharmacy, Centro, is my go-to place, both for discussing my health concerns and general beauty needs. The service is top-notch; both the owners and employees are wonderful professionals who always greet you with a smile and advise you on what's best for you at that moment. They've been in the area for many years, and I sincerely hope they stay for a long time. I recommend that anyone who hasn't yet visited, even if they live far away, come and see them sometime. A charming pharmacy with excellent service. They offer advice on any pharmacy-related topic, as well as on various dermocosmetic brands and facial care products, which is usually why I go there. They have wonderful creams that I've become accustomed to and repurchase time and time again.
I'm delighted with their wide range of products in addition to medications. On another occasion, I asked for advice on a toe separator and they had many options to choose from. The staff is very friendly.

My experience at this pharmacy today, around 5:00 PM, was very unpleasant and, frankly, unbecoming of a healthcare establishment.
I went to pick up medication I've been using for over seven years. Neither at this pharmacy nor at others, I'd never been asked for my physical ID to dispense it. In fact, I'd picked it up at this same pharmacy several times before without being asked.
When I explained to the employee, a short woman, that I'd never been asked for it and that's why I didn't have it with me, she responded very rudely with the phrase, "I'm not asking for anything unreasonable." Her tone was completely inappropriate, and I was so shocked by the way she spoke to me that I wasn't even able to react at the time.
If the regulations require ID, I have no problem with them complying. What is unacceptable is that the criteria seem to change depending on who is serving you, and above all, that someone seeking medication they need because they are ill is treated with such a lack of courtesy, respect, and empathy.
I have never received such treatment from a healthcare professional. It made me feel truly awful, and I left the pharmacy with a sense of powerlessness and a lack of consideration that I never expected to find in a place where, precisely, respect for patients should be paramount.

I went last night, August 30, 2026. I had just come from the Vithas emergency room with bronchitis. Laura, a truly exceptional professional, treated me. I left there wishing there were more professionals like her. She made me feel comfortable and understood at all times. I told her I had just gotten off a plane and been through the emergency room and was exhausted. She did everything she could to help me. She didn't have the inhaler I needed, and she looked for it at other pharmacies, but they didn't have it either. However, the next day (today) she told me to come back at 10:00 because she would have it, and she did. Laura, never stop doing what makes you happy, because it really shows. Thank you!

To say they provide quality service is an understatement. It's undoubtedly the best pharmacy. When it comes to medicine, they offer personalized advice based on your individual needs. Every time they've recommended something to me, they first listen attentively, and the recommendations are completely tailored to your specific situation. Besides being highly professional, they take the time to listen and explain in detail what will truly benefit you. As for organization, cleanliness, and variety, they have everything you could possibly need from a pharmacy, and if something you need is out of stock, they usually have it the next day. The prices are reasonable, and there's a wide selection, so you can easily compare. It's very well located and has quite extensive opening hours. For me, it's the best pharmacy.

Tips for Visiting Pharmacies in Alicante City Centre
Navigating a pharmacy in a foreign country can sometimes feel intimidating, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. The following tips will help you get exactly what you need efficiently, whether you are dealing with a minor emergency or simply restocking your travel toiletries. Keep these practical points in mind to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
Know the Green Cross: Unlike in some countries where drugstores are inside supermarkets or malls, Spanish pharmacies are standalone shops marked by a bright green cross. Often, the cross is animated or illuminated. If you see a green cross, you have found a "Farmacia," not just a health food store.
Ask for the "Farmacia de Guardia": If you need medication late at night, on a Sunday, or during the "siesta" closure in the afternoon, you must find the duty pharmacy. Look for a sign posted on the door of any closed pharmacy; it will list the address of the nearest location currently open to serve the district.
Bring Your Prescription (or the Box): If you are continuing medication from home, bring the original packaging or a digital photo of it. While many common drugs are available over the counter in Spain, some require a Spanish prescription. Showing the pharmacist the exact active ingredient (the "principio activo") allows them to find the closest local equivalent legally.
Don’t Underestimate the Pharmacist: In Spain, pharmacists are often the first line of defense for minor health issues. Instead of guessing which cold medicine to buy, describe your symptoms (e.g., dry cough, congestion, headache). They are legally trained to recommend the correct medication and dosage, saving you money on products you don’t need.
Expect Different Brand Names: The medication you use at home likely has a different commercial name in Spain, even if the chemical formula is identical. For example, Tylenol is known here primarily as Paracetamol. Always ask for the generic name of the drug rather than the brand name to avoid confusion and often save money.
Check for the "Homeopathy" Distinction: If you prefer natural or alternative remedies, note that Spanish pharmacies sell both evidence-based medicine and homeopathic products. If you want a scientifically proven treatment, ask for "medicina tradicional" or specify the chemical compound. If you are open to alternative options, the pharmacist can guide you through those shelves as well.
Whether you find yourself strolling down the marble tiles of the Explanada or getting lost in the narrow alleys of the Barrio, knowing where to find professional health advice brings immense peace of mind. The pharmacies in Alicante City Centre are well-equipped to handle the needs of both the local population and the thousands of tourists who pass through annually.
Take a moment to save this guide before your trip or your next walk downtown. Having a reliable list of pharmacies at your fingertips ensures that minor health issues remain just that—minor—allowing you to focus on enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine, the delicious cuisine, and the vibrant atmosphere that makes Alicante so special.
