Santiago de Compostela is a city that rewards curiosity. Beyond the grandeur of its cathedral and the emotional weight of the Camino de Santiago, the ancient granite streets conceal a thriving modern culture centered on slow living. For locals and pilgrims alike, the cafe is a sacred space—a place to rest tired feet, escape the Galician drizzle, and engage in the local ritual of sobremesa, the unhurried conversation that follows a meal.
The coffee scene here has evolved dramatically over the last decade. While traditional pastelerías still serve the classic café con leche alongside slices of tarta de Santiago, a new wave of specialty roasters and minimalist espresso bars has taken root. This creates a wonderful tension for the visitor: you can experience the deep-rooted history of the city in one sip and its vibrant, modern future in the next.
Navigating this landscape requires a guide who understands the nuances of Galician hospitality. You won’t find the ubiquitous global chains dominating the historic center here; instead, you will find independent owners who take immense pride in their craft. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to journal about your journey or a bustling terrace to people-watch, the city offers a distinct venue for every mood.
The best cafes in Santiago de Compostela are not just about the caffeine; they are about the atmosphere. Many are tucked away in hidden plazas or down narrow, moss-covered alleyways that require a bit of exploration to find. The reward for that exploration is an authentic experience that connects you to the rhythm of the city, away from the crowds of the Praza do Obradoiro.
This guide focuses on quality, sourcing, and atmosphere. We have evaluated the texture of the milk, the sourcing of the beans, the quality of the baked goods, and the comfort of the seating. We believe a great cafe must satisfy the practical need for a strong coffee while also feeding the soul with a welcoming environment.
We have also considered location carefully. When you are carrying a heavy backpack or recovering from a long walk, convenience matters. The establishments listed below are not just places to grab a quick espresso; they are destinations that offer a genuine taste of Santiago’s character.
Below is a curated selection of the finest spots the city has to offer, ranging from historic institutions to modern innovators.

A little off the beaten path but worth it. Great food and reasonable prices. Ate there twice during our stay in Santiago. Wished we would have found it earlier. Really appreciate the larger mugs of cafe con leche. The staff and kitchen are well orchestrated and serve a lot of people in a really efficient way. Great job, guys. Keep it up!

It was such a hot day and we came to this amazing café for brunch and to cool down. The service was amazing, so fast and friendly. The waitress who was working went above and beyond. We ordered some bagels and chocolate and churros and it was all absolutely delicious. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a cute cafe with good ambience, great food, and amazing staff.
Rishika Gupta★★★★☆
This cafe is suited very close to the cathedral and the city centre. It has amazing options for drinks and snacks. We took the croissant, carrot cake, cafe moka and tea infusions. I really liked the style in which the food is served, especially the tea. The aroma and taste was very homely. It's usually very busy all the time, but you could try it. There is a view to the Cathedral from infront of this cafe, which is a must see. It's very iconic. I also like the fact that this cafe is situated outside the city cafes, so it's abit peaceful around there.

Amazing place with friendly staff, nicely decorated interior (love the dogs wallpapers) and delicious and original breakfast (had a bagel with eggs and avocado). Many vegetarian options and very accommodating staff.
Also it opens early which is great for breakfast before going further on the Camino

The best santiago tarte, I have sampled many, and this one is just the best. Also, wonderful sangria, highly recommended!
Shirly D'silva★★★★★
I was looking for a tarta de santiago to take home and the clerk in the post office said that they had the best tart . He also said that they might not sell the entire tart as it is made daily on demand .
It looks like an unassuming place from the outside. A different era on the inside and there really is a mamma in the kitchen who said that it was ok to sell the entire tart .
I had a hot chocolate with churros while I waited for them to package the tart .. it was luscious!!! Not too sweet ! Not too thick ! Perfecto
The tart survived the plane trip smashed between on the backpack and it was fabulous! No too sweet

Very delicious lunch served with well seasoned products!
El Bee (elbee13)★★★★★
Old-style traditional cafe, serving tasty chocolate and churros along with other regular offerings. Super efficient waiters. Many locals in the early mornings, making it a truely authentic experience, before the tourist hoards arrive.

Lovely little spot! Great atmosphere and very attentive waiter. He warned us when ordering of the sizes of portions and our eyes were a bit bigger than our stomachs but he was exactly right. The padrón peppers were delicious as were the calamari, not chewy, nice and soft with light batter. The crispness and softness of peppers also. Tortilla was a bit overcooked for us. We had Galician broth too which was pleasant. All in all good quality food for the prices. The waiter was very nice he knew English and french (we tried our limited Spanish) nice experience. 🙂

Outstanding food at an excellent price. We have the baked peach with whipped feta tostada and the Galego Sandwich. Both were very tasty but the peach and whipped feta tostada was AMAZING! Lovely staff and a bonus chocolate with our coffees. Highly recommended.

Thank you Romeo for making our lunch experience so good. He was cheerful, timely and accurate with his service. We had the ham and cheese sandwiches and shared a Caesar salad along with our spritzer drinks. The location makes it a hidden gem. The patio tables were shaded and in a quiet area without a lot of foot traffic. I would definitely come back. Thank you for a great lunch!

Great coffee, the best Tarta De Santiago we had in Spain so far, made in house. Right taste, just the right moisture and no preservatives in sight.
TheCasa 12 is beautiful with brick walls about and cosy areas. We met Andy, such a great guy, very helpful and the owner. Sorayu, the barista made great coffee. Thanks guys

A lovely spot for a quick brunch or coffee stop in Santiago de Compostela. The place has a nice vibe, though the chairs aren’t the most comfortable if you’re planning to stay long — it’s more of a grab-and-go kind of place. I tried a bagel: the bread was a bit tough, but the filling was delicious. The coffee is highly recommended — true specialty coffee at its best. And the cookies… absolutely flavorful and delicious. Definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby. ☕🥯🍪

Absolutely delicious açaí bowl, bagel, and drinks! Such friendly service as well. Would definitely recommend for a healthy, fresh, and filling breakfast especially for all those peregrinos out there!

Yummy food if you’re in between hungry and not hungry or just want a sweet indulgence. Bagels and fruit bowls / açaí bowls are great. Coffee is not that good from my experience (Coffee Americano; hence only 4 stars)

I’m a tourist from Hong Kong. I just walk around and find this place which is spacious and clean. I don’t understand Spanish. A kind male shop attendant explains to me patiently what they have. The other attendants are pleasant and attentive. The coffee and pancake with Nutella & strawberry is good. I enjoy the time spending here.

One of the best energies at the old city for all ages, you´ll find youngsters, as not.
The vibe is really good, music is from a wide range of genres, always cheerful.
Very decent spot, better than it´s neighbors.
Service was very good but drinks took a particularly long while, twice.
There is not that much space to sit so I would recommend to book previously. It gets packed.

Great place our friends took us to in the evening for dinner. Place was spacious and welcoming, staff was kind. Cocktails were great. The cheeseburger was hyped up to me and it did not disappoint! It was really good! We really enjoyed our time and meals there. Definitely don't miss this spot in Santiago.

Very stylish and beautifully looking places accompanied with great food, which tastes as amazing as it looks by the way. Great coffee (with different types of milk available), amazing brunch opportunities, very friendly staff!
And the way, how all dishes and drinks served... Uff, fantastic!
The best place for coffee and brunches in the whole city.

Wow what a beautiful cafe! Came here post-Camino in search of a some good solid brunch and was not disappointed! Food is beautifully presented and service top notch. The poached eggs with bacon on sourdough with mushrooms was brilliant.
Thumbs up to the keen-eyed waitress who yelled out and stopped a random passerby walk off with a fellow pilgrims backpack in the nick of time!!!

We came here everyday whilst in Santiago and tried the beverage and food options. Everything was delicious and the €1.80 latte was especially excellent for the price. The only issue is that service tended to be quite slow, as the café is extremely popular. Sometimes we had to wait around 20 minutes to order. The café needs to hire more staff.
Chloé Schwizgebel★★★★★
Great place, especially for drinks and a relaxed atmosphere! The flat white is especially good and there are both oat and soy milk. The staff was also very friendly and attentive

We decided to visit this coffee shop because the cheesecake is said to be quite famous, and we were really looking forward to trying it.
Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. When we approached to order, the waitress spoke to us in a rude tone, which made us feel uncomfortable. Because of this, we decided to leave without ordering anything.
It’s a shame, as we had heard good things about the place, but the service left a negative impression.
Aurelie Schwellnus★★★★★
One of the best things I ate in my life. The brioche was so delicious. WOW

Absolutely loved this place! We had the waffle with cheddar, crispy bacon, egg and red onions – such a delicious combination and perfectly prepared.
The cocktails (Mojito) were excellent as well, and the service of Jalu was simply outstanding: friendly, attentive and welcoming throughout.
Definitely a place we would recommend when visiting Santiago de Compostela. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A very nice, charming and cosy cafe in the old area of the city. The interior is super nice, welcoming and friendly and it also has a terrace, so perfect for summer evenings. It's very close to the Cathedral as well as Alameda Park. They do have amazing options to choose from in breakfast, brunch, coffees and cocktails. Since, we wanted to try their speciality coffee, we took the latte and it turned out to be super good. I highly recommend this cafe and I will surely visit to try out other options they have to offer.

On a quiet street but only one street away from the cathedral and beside the police station is a classy , trendily decorated cafe very popular with the locals and few tourists . They also have an enclosed garden terrace at the back. Service was great, coffee good and I especially recommend Tostidas from the brunch menu.
Pedro Romualdo★★★★★
We had a fantastic experience at this coffee shop. The service was excellent (friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome from the start).
The portions of the cakes were bigger than expected, which was a great surprise, and everything was delicious. On top of that, the atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a break.
Javier Alvarez Rodilla★★★★★
I’ve been here a couple of times for breakfast and to get some work done on my laptop. It’s a comfortable, relaxed spot to work from, with good service and a clean, welcoming space. The toasts are great, and the coffee is solid too.
I’d definitely come back.

We came here just off just before ending our Camino and had one of the best breakfasts on the trail. We ordered at the table in the restaurant that had plenty of spacious indoor seating, a full bar, and an eclectic menu. Just a very nice place to hang out and decompress a bit. The service was great and the food was fantastic - highly recommend!

A great place with lots of brunch options. We grabbed their special sandwich with coffee, which was perfect for Sunday morning. The vibe and atmosphere is inviting and the staff were friendly. It's near San Roque, on the way of Camiño, so a good place to stop by for a quick coffee.

Great retreat in the middle of busy Santiago. This charming place has a relaxed atmosphere, classic style bar with small bites accompanying your drink. The two owners have humor, always open for a comment, sometimes even in your visitoes native language. I can recommend a glass of wine and enjoy the tortilla and empanada.
Andrew Hill★★★★★
Vermouth Shangri-La in Santiago de Compostela!
We were lucky enough to find this place almost accidentally after talking to the cheese vendor around the corner about vermouth. His favorite vermouth is called Sardino and we asked where we might be able to try it. After entering Caña Hueca, I knew I was home. There are several different types of vermouth in different bottles, boxes, and ceramic containers.
After ordering a couple of different vermouths, the proprietor, Dani, delivered us a plate of free tapas.
I am almost reluctant to mention this place, because it is so perfect. I didn't hear a single person speaking anything but castilliano or gallego inside - not a single tourist in any of the three times we visited.
We watched a lot of people come in for a coffee or water or soda. If you get coffee, it seems that you get a tapa of a light cake and a churro. With our vermouth or for those getting beer, the owner gave us a piece of galician empanada (sometimes tuna and sometimes ground meat) along with a generous piece of an absolutely beautiful tortilla española. Sometimes we would ALSO get chips and/or olives. This is the old fashioned: buy a drink and get a free tapa kind of place.
If you love vermouth, or if you just love a perfectly cooked tortilla, then this is your place. Be sure to talk to Dani, he is a sweet man and makes great vermouth recommendations. My recommendation: try a mix of red and white Sardino vermouth (mixing red and white seems to be a thing in this region - I had never heard of this before).
Katou STL★★★★★
Amazing little place. It's cozy and full of life. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. We got two little churros with our coffees. Prices are very decent. Will definitely go back if we are around.
Hello House★★★★☆
********CASH ONLY ******** 🙂 Is lovely chocolate and churros. Owners very nice and we were lucky on a rainy day to catch a booth without having to wait outside in the rain. Does lose a star as we got lucky to have enough on us in cash to cover our bill. Price is very, very high 0.40€ per churro and adds up fast. We did not expect the price till we saw the bill. Afterwards we did spot the posted price list on the wall - very small print. Of course maybe we should have asked instead of assuming it would be cheaper. The churros and chocolate were really good but we wouldn't have stopped if not for the rain and a seat being available as most everywhere in the area was jammed with tourists etc because of the rains and this was the first spot we ran too that had a seat available. So for not expecting to get caught in a crazy downpour and in need of a place to dry off and wait out the storm - this was a lovely spot to sit and enjoy chocolate and churros and thankfully we did have budget space when the bill came.
Zosia Janas★★★★★
I was working in Santiago for few months and I went to this bar every weekend. Owner of the bar was an amazing host. I felt in love with this place because of atmosphere, great and delicious tapas and drinks. You need to be prepare to pay by cash in this place but it’s worth all of the money. When I will come back to Santiago it will be my first stop on my way. ❤️❤️❤️

Amazing little café, just few minutes from the Santiago cathedral. I really loved their coffee, they serve flat white, which I haven’t seen much in Spain on the Camino. Their toasts were also great. Have been there two times when I was in Santiago and would definitely come again! 😊

Our group had a lovely brunch here. We’d actually just left another brunch spot nearby because of rude staff and poor service, so this place was a breath of fresh air. Even though it was really busy, the staff were so friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious, the coffee and orange juice were excellent, and the service was impressively fast. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming despite how busy it was. We’d happily come back, and if you’re in Santiago, this place is definitely worth a visit! 🥑🍳🍊

LAERCIO CRUVINEL JÚNIOR★★★☆☆
Great cappucino with oat milk. The croissant is not up to the French name of the business. It is also unfortunate that the manager talks too loud with the employee and makes fun of the customers in their own dialect.
Andrea Sobolova★★★☆☆
So, the pancakes, please see the first two pictures, the first picture was from other reviews and I asked for the same and got the second one, we’re not bad but quite dry.
The waffle tasted as from supermarket, also quite dry and the chocolate was not Nutella as it seemed on the other pictures.
The yogurt bowl was great 🤩 and the coffee as well.
Lady was not super friendly but okay nice.

What a fabulous find. The friendliest french lady with the most delicious brunch, probably in Santiago.
Highly recommend the petit brunch. I had tea, fresh juice, avocado and egg tartine (scrummy), hubby had a yoghurt fruit bowl and the biggest crepe with cheese and eggs. Our friend had a delicious homemade quiche, and the croissants tasted french!
Just visit. You won't regret it.

Love their quote and the way they've stayed true to their words. They have amazing speciality coffee, what an aroma and taste, it is a must recommend. Apart from coffee, they serve other drinks too - hot chocolate, etc. Also, do try their cinnamon rolls - apt sweet, soft and flaky. They do have pistachio and other rolls which are equally good in taste. A great start to your morning with their coffee place.

Great coffee at Shoot Me Coffee. I had a very good V60 and a flat white with beautiful latte art. There’s also an excellent selection of food.

I have searched for good coffee in Spain for the entire Camiño and only found two places that met my standards. This was one. Such a satisfying end.
Tips for Enjoying the Cafe Culture in Santiago de Compostela
To truly blend in and maximize your enjoyment of the city’s coffee scene, it helps to understand the local etiquette and timing. While Santiago is welcoming to tourists, adjusting your habits slightly will unlock a more authentic and relaxed experience.
- Know the local lingo. While a standard café con leche is universally understood, try ordering a café solo (espresso) or a cortado (espresso with a splash of milk) to drink like a local. If you want iced coffee on a warm day, ask for a café con hielo, which usually comes with a glass of ice to pour your hot coffee over.
- Time your visit strategically. Cafes in Santiago have two distinct rush hours: mid-morning (around 11:00 AM) and after lunch (around 4:00 PM). If you want a quiet table to read or work, visit before 10:00 AM or during the Spanish lunch window between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, when many locals are eating, not drinking coffee.
- Embrace the terrace culture. Galicia is known for its rain, but when the sun breaks through, the city floods the plazas. Be prepared to sit outside even if it is slightly chilly; the people-watching is worth it. However, note that sitting at a table on a terrace often costs slightly more than standing at the bar.
- Pair your coffee with a local sweet. While croissants are common, the authentic pairing is a slice of Tarta de Santiago (almond cake) or a filloa (a Galician crepe). Many cafes bake these in-house, and they perfectly complement the bitterness of a strong espresso.
- Carry cash for smaller spots. While Santiago is a modern city, some of the older, traditional family-run pastelerías and tiny espresso bars in the historic center operate on a cash-only basis or have a minimum card spend. Keeping a few euros in your pocket ensures you won’t miss out on a hidden gem.
The beauty of Santiago de Compostela lies in its duality—it is a city of pilgrimage and profound history, yet it buzzes with a youthful, student-driven energy from its university. This dynamic is reflected perfectly in its cafes. You can sit in a 19th-century literary haunt one moment and a sleek, modern roastery the next, all within a five-minute walk.
Ultimately, choosing the right cafe is about matching your mood to the room. Whether you are seeking a quiet space to reflect on your journey or a lively hub to meet new friends, Santiago offers a table for you. Take your time, order another coffee, and let the city’s gentle rhythm guide your day.
