Matadero Madrid is more than a cultural landmark; it is the creative heartbeat of the Legazpi district. Housed in a former slaughterhouse along the banks of the Manzanares River, this sprawling complex draws art lovers, filmmakers, and families from across the capital. While the exhibitions and events are the main draw, the surrounding streets have quietly developed a serious coffee culture.
Whether you are looking for a quick espresso before a gallery opening or a relaxed brunch after a walk through Madrid Río, the area offers a surprising variety of options. The neighborhoods of Legazpi, Delicias, and Chopera blend traditional Spanish bar culture with the city’s growing specialty coffee movement. This means you can find everything from a classic café con leche to a meticulously brewed single-origin pour-over.
Finding the right spot can be challenging if you are unfamiliar with the area south of Atocha. Many of the best places are hidden on quiet side streets or tucked inside creative spaces, away from the main traffic of the Paseo de la Chopera. Knowing where to go saves you time and ensures you get the quality and atmosphere you are looking for.
This guide focuses on practical value, highlighting venues that excel in bean quality, atmosphere, and proximity to Matadero. We have prioritized places that offer a genuine experience, whether that means house-roasted beans, exceptional pastries, or a quiet workspace. You will not find generic chains here, only local spots worth your time.
To build this list, we considered consistency in espresso preparation, the provenance of the beans, and the overall comfort of the space. We also factored in how walkable each location is from the main entrance of Matadero Madrid. The goal is to help you match your mood to the right venue, whether you need a quick caffeine fix or a place to linger for an hour.
Because the area is undergoing constant urban renewal, the landscape of cafes shifts regularly. However, the establishments featured here have proven their staying power through loyal local followings and a commitment to quality. They represent the best of what the southern bank of the Manzanares has to offer right now.
Use this guide as your starting point for exploring the neighborhood beyond the cultural center. Each entry offers something distinct, from minimalist design to bohemian comfort. Here are the best coffee shops to visit near Matadero Madrid.

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.

Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!!
Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵
Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom.
The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐
Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out.
I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most!
The name really charmed me as well — an extra plus for that!

great latte! didn't make my head explode or get my body floating but also genuinely good latte. big latte for €3 is awesome deal too.

The cortado and white chocolate pistachio cookie were perfect. Coffee was light and cookie not too sweet. The barista was also very friendly. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the neighborhood

i absolutely LOVE this place. the barista who is also the owner is the kindest person ever.
i’ve been pursuing a cookie hunt in madrid for the past 3 months. i eat cookies literally everywhere i go to find the best one. this is definitely competing for #1 on the list!!! soooooo good that i literally take the train for 20 minutes just to go get it

My family and I are true coffee enthusiasts, and after trying countless coffee shops across Madrid, nothing has come close to the experience we had at Buna. Their coffee especially the V60 is simply exceptional, easily among the best we’ve ever tasted. We were so impressed that we even bought beans to take home with us.
Their matcha is equally incredible smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. It’s rare to find a place that excels in both coffee and matcha at this level.
What truly elevates the experience, though, is Joul. His expertise and passion for coffee are immediately evident. He’s incredibly welcoming, highly knowledgeable, and takes the time to craft each cup with precision and care. I personally loved chatting with him while he prepared our drinks it added a unique, personal touch to the whole experience.
If you’re a coffee lover or even a matcha fan searching for something special, this place is an absolute must-visit.
Max Klein★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic cafe! The coffee was great and amazingly they have the new Coconut ROA as well. Super friendly employees, Joel was super kind. Will be coming back!
Kaya★★★★★
Finally found a decent coffee place in Madrid, also serving delicious cookies that are soft but not overly crumbly! If you are into having lattes that taste like coffee more than milk, consider Buna!
Do note this place supports takeouts only, there isn’t any place to sit. Perfect if you are on the go. The barista is pretty friendly too 🙂

Highly recommend this coffee shop! Delicious food, treats, coffee, smoothies, and so much more! We found ourselves here everyday of our trip! Something we could not miss before getting our day started! Everyone is so kind, with lively energy, lots of seating as well outside! I would recommend this place to everyone! Highlight of our trip!

It opens early, making it a great place for breakfast with coffee. 👍 One coffee per dessert was a must 😂, but it was so sweet and delicious. 😍 (I envy the atmosphere where dogs come into the cafe without any problem… All the dogs I met by chance at the cafe were well-trained, quiet, and cute. 😍)
Nikole Young★★★★★
The atmosphere is great for a relaxing coffee break. The Saobao was absolutely delicious—fluffy, flavorful, and a total highlight. The coffee was solid, complementing the food nicely. Highly recommend this charming spot for a tasty treat and a cozy vibe!

The Açaí bowls were absolutely delicious and tasted really fresh and bio. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I also loved the originality of the writings on the wall, it gave the place a unique and creative vibe. Definitely a spot I would come back to!

Very good coffee and food. The atmosphere was welcoming and the service was friendly throughout our visit. Especially the toasts were absolutely delicious — perfectly prepared and full of flavor. one of my favorite cafes! Excellent chai & matcha and all of their pastries are delicious - choco croissant & pan suisse alwaaays hit the spot 👌🏼
Richard Pole★★★★★
My favourite Cold Brew in Madrid, just the absolute best. Also one of my favourite coffee places in Madrid. If you are looking for a perfect cup every time, head here. My only hesitation is that sometimes the staff seem a bit unfriendly.

Cute little café with a bakery next to it. It was cozy to sit outside on a sunny day, enjoy good coffee, and just relax. The service was good and fast, especially considering there was only one person working.
Abijah Nomis★★★★★
Delicious cappuccino!! The cappuccino comes in S, M, or L which I found strange but I got a M and it seemed to be a typical cappuccino size. Beans perfectly roasted, very sweet, the milk foam was also perfect. The barista spoke English and was friendly. Provided the WiFi password which I appreciated.
Not much seating but the interior is very cute and with good chill music, it has great vibes if you can get a spot! I bought two bags of coffee to go, the beans were that good. Wish I were staying in Madrid longer so I could come back!
RV★★★★★
The iced latte here was excellent and remarkably good, can highly recommend going here for great coffee. The space for seating is very limited but still worth a visit.

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.
Donald Bell★★★★★
Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.
Netanel Nesher★★★★★
Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people.
The avocado toast was simple and very tasty.
Good prices as well
Damian Górecki★★★★★
Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

I have so many great things to say about this coffee stop. Obviously, their coffee was delicious, they have many great options of specialty coffee to choose from both for filter or espresso. The barista was so friendly and happy to chat about coffee and explain our options to us. We had a taste of their filter options before ordering as well. I honestly thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will be coming back as often as I can. Great coffee and amazing service.
Marco Casto★★★★★
During our trip to Madrid, after visiting 24 specialty coffee shops (many of which were underwhelming), we finally found Pink Bourbon.
Given its mention on European Coffee Trip as the best in Madrid, we had high expectations—and they were not only met but exceeded!
The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely attentive when helping customers choose the perfect coffee.
They offer an extensive selection of both filter and espresso coffees—a real rarity in Madrid, unfortunately!
What’s truly fantastic is that every pour-over is brewed with real-time extraction profiling: as your coffee is being made, you’re shown a live graph displaying the different stages of the brew—temperature, flow rate, and extraction curves in real time. It’s an absolute geek’s dream and adds a whole new dimension to the experience!
We even had a chance to chat a bit, and they made us feel right at home, despite coming all the way from Turin. To all Madrid locals: you’ve truly got gold right in your neighborhood!
This café is absolutely worth visiting again and again—not only because they frequently rotate their coffee offerings, but also because the team is wonderfully passionate and geeky about coffee.
Special mention goes to their **FREDDO**, a classic Greek iced espresso, expertly and masterfully extracted.
We’ll miss you guys! Next time I’m in Madrid, I’ll book a hotel nearby 😉
Jessica León★★★★★
Pink Bourbon is such a great find. The coffee was amazing, easily the best cortado I’ve had in a long time. We only discovered it two days before the end of our trip, and it was so good that we’re going back tomorrow just to have one last great coffee before heading home.
The team is incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do, but never in an arrogant way. They’ve also turned a small corner kiosk into something modern and cool. So glad we found this place, highly recommend.
Mohamad★★★★★
the coffee was amazing. the iced latte takeaway cups were really cute, and also the oat milk iced latte was fantastic as well.
bonus: you can smell the ground coffee using the squishy things in front of the espresso machine!

I rarely write reviews but during my three day stay in madrid i had to go there twice because of how sweet they were.
Immediately upon sitting down, they offer you a free cup of cold water which is nice because of the heat wave going on.
On one of the days I had a ginger and lemon juice which was super refreshing but on my second visit I decided to try the "Bonbon frio" which was very strong and delicious in flavour.
The servers were so nice and seemed to really care about their regulars. The ambience and decor are pretty relaxing and a good spot if you wanna go study/work during the week.
TravelGayd★★★★★
Just got a coffee to go but I’ll definitely come back to check out their breakfast. Super friendly. The food looks delicious and the tostada that I had was really good

There are not enough stars in the sky to accurately rate this cafe. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable, the staff feels and treats you like family, and the coffee is the best I've ever had. We were in Madrid for 2 and 1/2 days and gladly filled their loyalty punch card. The Cafelito, both iced and frozen, is a must try for its unique, fresh/rich complexity. I will miss this place and their friendly staff ❤️

Wonderful cafe in which you can work or just enjoy the cakes and coffee. The workers and owners are very friendly. They allowed us to take the coffees to the plaza near by and enjoy them in the sun. If you’re walking around Lavapies do check them out 🙂

Highly recommended. Excellent coffee and service. Small place, very basic, but cute touches.
I bought, they ground, and I moka-potted the Elpidio - the result best Moka coffee I have ever had - by a huge margin.

Lovely little cafe with quirky furniture and insane coffee. Iykyk. Prices are so reasonable I had to ask him if he was only charging me for one coffee. He confirmed it was two.
Christina Henline★★★★★
Super cute little hidden cafe! They made the perfect oat milk cappuccinos and the orange cake was delicious!
Pedro Carvalheiro★★★★★
We ordered a large Flat White Latte and a large Cappuccino, both were absolutely delicious. The place has a cozy local vibe: many customers seemed to know each other, walked in with their dogs, and chatted casually. A great spot for anyone looking for quality coffee. They also offer beans from Brazil, Nicaragua, and Uganda, which shows their care for variety and origin.

Had brunch here and really enjoyed everything we ordered!
The food was delicious, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was lovely.
The ube matcha was good, though I would’ve loved a bit more ube flavor to come through. Overall, a great spot and I’d definitely come back!
Mario Petric★★★★☆
It was a nice experience. It was raining outside, so the place was crowded inside. You need to order what you want at the counter, but we thought that the waiter will come to us, because we don’t understand the Spanish signs on the wall. Some of the waiters did not speak English, so it was a bit hard to communicate if you do not speak Spanish. The food was pretty good, and the prices were affordable. You get the orange juice for free. We ate benedict eggs and avocado toast.
Ahmad★★★★☆
A cool coffee corner, modern temporary style, not the traditional Spanish coffee shop style, an experience that matches typical specialty coffee shops in North America. A wide Latte and Flat White options available, a nice selection of pastries. Tried the cortado, which I found to be average, or slightly below. Nice baristas though!

Great spot for brunch with a really nice atmosphere. I sometimes come here to work, and it’s generally a pleasant environment to focus for a bit. It can feel a little cramped when it gets busy, but the vibe and overall experience make up for it. Definitely a good place to relax, eat, or get some work done.

Very beautiful cafeteria. Loved it!
As I understood, the only thing they have and it's not vegan is the eggs, but they have vegan eggs as well, so I am not sure why they have eggs 😅. Great coffee, delicious tostadas and cakes, totally recommended place.

Awesome little place. Been there twice during a visit to Madrid over the weekend. Usually a big fan of coffee but I tried the iced matcha and banana bread. Don‘t order it if you‘re not hungry 😂 The slices are huge! Friendly staff and more than fairly priced for what you get.
Daniel Roures Rego★★★★★
I went to Dale Café for lunch today, and I loved everything I ate: the muhammara, the toast with cashew cheese and the dulce de leche cheesecake. Plus, I ordered a pistachio roscón de reyes, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff are super nice. Almost everything is vegan, including the roscón. I totally recommend this place.

Cozy vibe, and vintage inside. Not super big but good for a coffee or bite . They do have outside seating. My favorite is the lox bagel, truly delicious. Cannot speak for the drinks.

Bite Me Café is a quiet gem in Madrid. Everything is fully vegan, from the creative donuts (called Halos) to the carefully made lattes and savory weekend bites. The space is small, cozy, and welcoming, with a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to linger. Flavors rotate often, and each donut feels like a little surprise—beautifully made and full of character. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need to shout to stand out. Go early if you can—the best treats tend to sell out

Martin★★★☆☆
A coffee shop catering to tourists with dietary restrictions and a desire for familiar food. Despite its appealing appearance and seating, the service is slow, especially during non-peak hours. The pricing is tourist-oriented, and sugar must be fetched separately, it’s not brought to you. The cortado and orange juice (from blender)are good, but the food options are limited to European and American tastes, including a sandwich with German bread. The atmosphere is pleasant, but the lack of authentic Spanish cuisine and the high percentage of tourists make it an unsuitable place for me.
sam camp★★★★★
Superb, they make one of the best coffees in Spain. Their food is fresh, tasty and we'll made. The service is some of the nicest we have experienced in Spain.
It is always a pleasure to eat somewhere where customer service is simply about being nice and friendly and providing coffee and food that the staff is proud of.
They are Air-conditioned, the space may look small but they do have much more room downstairs and their service is fast and efficient.

Perfect gluten free brunch spot! The pancakes tasted homemade, rich, and comforting without being too sweet. Every bite with the fresh fruit and mascarpone cream was amazing. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the flavor and presentation🪄✨

Got the pancakes and toast with eggs. Good scrambled egg but the pancakes were just ok. Mascarpone didn’t add much but was a decent serving for the price. Service was lovely and attentive. Prices are super fair one of the cheaper breakfasts in Madrid. Would come back to try more of their menu!

Tips for Choosing the Right Coffee Shop
While the list above provides excellent starting points, your ideal choice depends on the type of visit you are planning. The area around Matadero Madrid serves different needs at different times of the day. Understanding the local rhythm and a few key details about Spanish coffee culture will help you blend in and enjoy the experience more fully.
Check the opening hours before walking over. Many specialty coffee shops in Madrid open later than traditional Spanish bars, often around 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM. If you are an early riser looking for coffee at 8:00 AM, you may need to rely on a traditional cafeteria rather than a specialty brew bar.
Know the difference between "Café de Especialidad" and a traditional bar. If you want a flat white, cold brew, or filter coffee, look for shops that advertise "Café de Especialidad." If you simply want a quick, inexpensive shot of espresso with milk, a traditional neighborhood bar will serve you a solid café con leche without the premium price tag.
Consider your seating needs. Some of the trendier coffee shops in Legazpi and Delicias are quite small, designed for quick consumption rather than laptop work. If you plan to sit for two hours to read or work, call ahead or look for venues with larger communal tables or outdoor terraces.
Bring cash or a card, but be prepared for small transaction minimums. While most modern cafes accept contactless payments, some smaller traditional spots may have a minimum spend for card transactions. Carrying a few euros in coins is always wise when hopping between galleries and cafes.
Respect the local terrace culture. If you sit outside, you will generally pay a small surcharge compared to standing at the bar. This is standard practice in Madrid. Additionally, if you are finished with your drink, it is polite to free up the table, especially during the busy weekend brunch hours when locals are waiting for a seat.
Pair your coffee with the local timing. If you want the full experience, order a coffee mid-morning and pair it with a tostada with tomato, or visit in the afternoon when locals enjoy a café solo alongside a small sweet. Avoid expecting a full breakfast menu at a specialty shop, as many focus primarily on the coffee and pastries.
Exploring the coffee scene near Matadero Madrid offers a genuine glimpse into the city’s evolving identity. It is a space where the industrial history of Legazpi meets the modern, artisanal future of Madrid’s food culture.
