12 Best Bakeries Near Matadero Madrid

Exploring the area around Matadero Madrid offers more than just contemporary art, theatre, and cultural exhibitions. This vibrant district, nestled along the banks of the Manzanares River, has quietly become a hotspot for artisan baking and traditional pastry. Whether you are a local Madrileño or a visitor soaking in the creative atmosphere of the Legazpi neighborhood, the scent of fresh bread and roasted coffee is never far away. Finding the perfect loaf of sourdough or a delicate croissant here is an essential part of the local experience.

The culinary renaissance in this southern part of the city has brought a wave of young bakers and pastry chefs who respect Spanish traditions while embracing modern techniques. From crusty Galician-style loaves to buttery French viennoiserie, the variety is impressive. However, with so many cafés and pastelerías claiming to be the best, knowing where to go can be overwhelming for a first-time visitor. You want to avoid the tourist traps and eat like a true local.

This guide is designed to help you navigate the flour-dusted landscape surrounding Matadero Madrid. We have scoured the streets of Arganzuela and the neighboring barrios to bring you the most reliable and delicious options. Our criteria focus on the quality of ingredients, the skill of the bakers, the authenticity of the recipes, and the overall atmosphere of the shop. We believe that a great bakery is not just about sugar and butter; it is about craftsmanship.

You will find a mix of historic institutions that have been feeding the neighborhood for generations and trendy newcomers that have perfected the art of the long fermentation. Whether you need a quick breakfast to go before visiting the Matadero exhibition halls or a place to sit down and relax with a coffee and a pastry, there is an option for you. We have considered different budgets and dietary preferences to ensure everyone can find something satisfying.

One of the joys of this area is its walkability. Many of these bakeries are located within a short stroll from the main entrance of the cultural center, making them perfect for a mid-visit snack. You can easily pair your cultural tour with a gastronomic tour, moving from one bakery to the next. Just be prepared for the difficult decision of choosing between a savory empanada and a sweet napolitana.

Before we dive into the specific locations, it is important to note that the Spanish bakery schedule differs slightly from other countries. Many locals enjoy a light breakfast of toast or pastry mid-morning, and the bakeries often sell out of their best items by early afternoon. To ensure you get the widest selection, we highly recommend visiting these spots between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

To make your search for the perfect crumb as easy as possible, we have compiled a curated list of the top spots in the vicinity. These establishments have been selected for their consistency and dedication to the art of baking. Below is our definitive guide to the best bakeries near Matadero Madrid.

Absolutely fantastic cookies! Freshly baked, perfectly soft on the inside with just the right texture, and packed with amazing flavor. Every bite was delicious, and it’s easy to see the care that goes into making them. If you’re in the area, don’t miss them—they’re definitely worth trying!

Desvan put on an absolute masterclass with their cookies today. We are genuinely so impressed. The brownie cookie was astoundingly delicious. The texture of the cookies is soft and gooey- fantastic. The KitKat cookie was a hit as well. So satisfied!

These cookies were delicious! I got two classic and two Nutella to share and I was blown away by both, but especially the classic. It was perfectly soft and crunchy at the same time. I wish I’d discovered this place earlier during our time in Madrid because I already want to go back! The cashier was very nice too, especially with kindly tolerating my attempt at speaking Spanish.
Maria Jose O.★★★★☆
Loved the decor and they had great music place. The girls on the counter were super friendly and helpful. The cookies are really good with tons of options (so hard to choose!) and good size (you could even share them but you won’t want to).

Such an adorable cute cafe! Me and my friends walked by and stopped for a coffee and a sweat treat. The coffee was great, the sweets were delicious and the atmosphere was extremely cozy and aesthetic! It's also great for studying cause it's quiet. The interior is very pretty and makes you wanna stay for a long time. The staff is also extremely friendly and relaxed, which is very inviting! Would definitely recommend for a cozy, chill get-together with friends!

Such a cute place! The owner is super nice and welcoming, the place is well designed and has a space to work, and the pastries and coffee are delicious. Highly recommended!

The decor is absolutely gorgeous. The lady who served me was so kind and gave me a bread recommendation, I was travelling so she also offered to store my luggage which I thought was so considerate! 10/10 would come back
Daina Vecstaudza★★★★☆
Super cute place and the owner was super lovely. Drink was super good too. Just the place was very cold and the service from the lady working there could have been better (I greater her once I entered and I was ignored, and when I ordered ..no smile, nothing...maybe she had a bad day but really, it didn't make me feel welcomed. Later she brought a water for me ans my friend whicu was nice, this is why I don't give 3 stars for service but 4, for this detail. But for sure will come here another time and see if it was just on off kind of day).
Maria Jose O.★★★☆☆
The place is lovely and the owners are really nice. Maybe Chai isn’t their strong suit. I tried a hot chai latte and it was 70% foam and the rest liquid, it was cold and didn’t taste like chai. For the price it’s not really worth it. The muffins are good though and tasted fresh.

Last stop in Madrid before heading to the airport, and this was a great send-off! The staff was very kind and helpful. The donut was delicious, soft on the inside, just crispy enough on the outside. I also appreciated that they were open early. Loved this place!

Yesterday I was on my way to another bakery. Found this place and ordered what looked best to me. The Apple Tarte and the little Cheesecake with strawberries and a cream from different berries were amazing. The Coffee with milk was tasty too. Happy to change plans and tried these amazing plans.
Vivian Mills★★★★★
The people there are wonderful and the vegan breakfast food is yummy. They're also so friendly and professional! Update: This is one of those places where community is built. It's as wonderful now as it was the first time I set foot there. The service and food are wonderful. Ana is a Lavapiés treasure 😊.

Absolutely amazing place. The Basque cheesecake was one of the best I've ever had – incredibly creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced, without being overly sweet. You can really tell everything is made with quality ingredients. What impressed me even more was the huge selection of cakes, pastries, and desserts. There are so many options that it's hard to choose just one. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was lovely, and everything looked fresh and delicious. If you're in Madrid and love desserts, this place is definitely worth a visit. I'll be coming back.
Emiliano Toscano★★★★★
This place was absolutely unreal. The cheesecake was one of the best desserts I’ve had in Madrid — creamy, rich, perfectly baked, and somehow still light at the same time. Even the coffee was amazing. You can tell they actually care about quality here. The atmosphere felt warm, creative, and authentic, not touristy at all. One of those spots you randomly walk into and end up remembering the whole trip because of it. If you’re in Madrid, do yourself a favor and stop here. 10/10.

Best cheesecake shop in Madrid. Pistachio is outstanding. Portions are bid enough to share in a very cute setting. Owner is super friendly as well. Definitely a place that you will keep coming back for more.
Elisia Flatt★★★★★
Fantastic cheesecake! Not icky sweet like in the US. It's creamy and delicious. I don't usually eat the crust, because it's too sweet, but this is perfect. My absolute favorite is the crustless, but the plain with crust was also excellent, as were the tiramisu and the oreo, the other two flavors our group tried. Really worth the walk while in Madrid!!! Let Gustavo take care of you! He makes the best cheesecake I've had ANYWHERE!!!😋👍👍❤️
Cansu Topcu★★★★★
I've never tasted anything like this before—pure cheesecake perfection! We tried three types and each was better than the last. But if I had to choose, the Tiramisu and Ferrero definitely stole the show. Simply amazing!

I had a great experience at this bakery. I tried the cherry cinnamon roll and it was absolutely delicious — the dough was soft, fresh, and perfectly balanced, and the cream on top was just incredible. The chocolate cookies were amazing too — not too hard, not too soft, just perfect in texture and flavor. Even the Americano coffee was very good and complemented everything nicely. Definitely a place I would come back to again and again.
Clara Schwegmann★★★★☆
Great place for cinnamon rolls. We tried lotus, Oreo and pistachio. They were really soft and not too dry. They look gorgeous but personally I think that they could use a little more filling - especially since they are very expensive. Also, they don’t have a regular cinnamon rolls with just cream cheese which we found a little disappointing.
Gjorgi Andonovski★★★★★
Great spot in La Latina! Salt in Cake Naturalería has really tasty cinnamon rolls, I tried the cookie one and the pistachio, and both were amazing. Soft, fresh, and full of flavor. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area!
Chanel M★★★★★
Awesome spot for a sweet treat. They are most popular for their cinnamon rolls but personally, I think their cookies are a standout. Try the pistachio, chocolate chip, and Oreo cookies! The service is friendly/helpful also. The only downside is the price $$$
Julii★★★★★
I dont understand these reviews... it was absolutly incredible! Not dry or soemthing... BUT if you want a really sweet one i think its not the right place. Because of the natural ingredients its not extremly sweet like the normal cinnamonroll from the supermarket, but for me as a fitness person its was perfect because i normally dont like the absolut sweet "normal" ones.

Santo has quietly become part of my routine. The bread is easily the best you’ll find in town. I already have my favorites (the cardamom bun and the canelé), but honestly, the best thing you can do is let yourself try something new each time. Walk in, breathe in the smell of fresh bread, pick something you’ve never had before, and enjoy it slowly. The staff are lovely and there’s a real warmth here, not just from the ovens. And the pastries… truly to die for.

This Panadería is a Hidden Gem in Madrid. Employees were truly kind and had better words that I have encountered for understanding their food. Quality is so invaluable. Texture was Crispy and buttery but not greasy and lean.
Nati★★★★★
I’ve been here 3 times and every time the service has been absolutely lovely. I appreciate that they take their time with each customer to answer questions, give recommendations, and make comfortable conversation. Besides the amazing workers, their pastries and bread are top tier. I’m writing this after eating the Za’atar, Feta, and Sesame roll and I’m stunned. The coquito with the coconut and coffee combination also pleasantly surprised me. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything here.

Diego Lizardez-Ruiz★★★☆☆
It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty). The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.
Joe Robinsmith★★★★★
Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.
May Magda★★★★★
Great breakfast spot in Madrid! Excellent coffee, delicious pastries, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend🥰
Wen C★★★★★
Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros
Maria Mendieta★☆☆☆☆
Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

Finally found a chocolate cake. Been looking online and even though it gives a patisseria they dont have it. Quite cute shop, the guy was very nice and patient even though I’m struggling with my Spanish. I prefer the ferrero one. Im excited to try other flavour.

I am heavily pregnant this Christmas and I couldn't bother bake desserts. I ordered two cakes online and they were amazing. Especially the carrot cake. I highly recommend it.

I ordered the muffins from this place, and they were okay — decent, but nothing special and not something I’d go out of my way to get again.
Fred H.★★★★★
Oh my god! I put on weight only looking at these cakes! Beatiful and the best part is that they are DE-LI-CIOUUUUS!!! Best cakes in Madrid for 3.5€ a slice. Very original cheesecakes: Kinder, Kitkat, Oreo, banofee, etc... This is the place to go. note: the site is super small, it is best to take it away and enjoy it while watching a movie at home 😉 But in cold winter days I had a warm chocolate inside with a slice of cake, both delicious!
Anisha Kaur★★★☆☆
My boyfriend ordered a box of cupcakes for me, and they were decent overall. The cake part was a little dry, and the frosting was on the firmer side, but the flavors were still okay. The box included two red velvet cupcakes, one Oreo, and another flavor I couldn’t quite identify, but it tasted fine as well.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth. They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

La Mallorquina is a lovely café with delicious cakes, especially the Ensaimada. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a sweet treat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history. Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable. The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry. The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation. La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

04/04 西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊 The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares. Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol. Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style. Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.

Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

Tips for Enjoying Bakeries Near Matadero Madrid

To truly make the most of your bakery crawl in this dynamic district, a little local knowledge goes a long way. Understanding the rhythms of the neighborhood and the specialties of the region will elevate your experience from a simple snack to a cultural immersion. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind before you set out on your culinary adventure.

Go Early for the Best Selection
Unlike some northern European countries where bread is an all-day affair, Spanish bakeries often bake in the early morning hours. If you arrive after 2:00 PM, you might find that the most popular sourdough loaves or the flakiest croissants are already gone. Aim to visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM to see the shelves fully stocked and the pastries at their peak freshness.

Carry Cash or a Local Card
While most modern bakeries in Madrid accept credit and debit cards, some smaller, traditional obradores may have a minimum spend for card payments or prefer cash for quick transactions. It is always wise to carry a small amount of change, especially if you are just grabbing a single coffee and a pastry, to keep the line moving quickly for the locals behind you.

Learn the Local Lingo
While many baristas speak some English, knowing a few Spanish terms will help you order with confidence. "Pan de masa madre" means sourdough bread, "bollería" refers to pastries like croissants, and "napolitana" is a sweet pastry often filled with chocolate or cream. A simple "para llevar" means "to go," while "para tomar aquí" means you will be eating in the shop.

Look for the Wood-Fired Ovens
If you want the most authentic and flavorful bread, seek out bakeries that use "horno de leña" (wood-fired ovens). These traditional ovens give the crust a distinct smokiness and texture that is impossible to replicate in modern electric ovens. These spots are becoming rarer, so they are definitely worth the extra walk.

Pair Your Bread with Local Produce
If you buy a loaf to take away, consider stopping by a local market to pick up some Spanish olive oil or ripe tomatoes. Rubbing a fresh tomato and drizzling olive oil on a slice of rustic bread is the classic Andalusian breakfast known as "pan con tomate." It is a simple, healthy, and incredibly satisfying way to enjoy your bakery purchase like a true Spaniard.

The area around Matadero Madrid is a testament to how tradition and innovation can coexist beautifully. Whether you are biting into a rustic loaf that has been proofed for 24 hours or a delicate pastry that shatters with every bite, you are tasting the passion of the city. These bakeries are more than just places to buy food; they are community hubs where neighbors gather and stories are shared.

As you plan your visit to the cultural heart of Legazpi, make sure to leave room in your itinerary for these culinary detours. The best way to understand a city is often through its food, and in Madrid, that journey starts with bread. Take your time, savor the flavors, and enjoy the warm hospitality that defines this incredible neighborhood.
