12 Best Cafes Near Matadero Madrid

The area surrounding Matadero Madrid has transformed into one of the city’s most dynamic cultural and culinary zones. Once an industrial slaughterhouse, the complex now hosts exhibitions, design markets, theatre performances, and independent film screenings. With so much to explore, finding a quality place to pause for coffee becomes an essential part of the visit.

The surrounding neighbourhoods of Legazpi, Delicias, and Chopera offer a diverse range of coffee experiences. You can find everything from specialty roasters focusing on single-origin beans to traditional Spanish cafés serving café con leche and fresh pastries. The common thread is a strong sense of local character and a welcoming atmosphere.

Whether you are starting your morning before visiting the Matadero studios or taking an afternoon break from the nearby Madrid Río park, the right café sets the tone. Many of the best spots are tucked away on quiet side streets, rewarding those who wander a few minutes beyond the main entrance. These are places where locals linger over laptops, friends catch up, and baristas remember regular orders.

This guide focuses on quality, consistency, and proximity. Each recommendation has been selected for its distinct personality, the calibre of its coffee, and its ability to serve as a comfortable base for exploring the area. You will find options suitable for a quick espresso at the bar or a longer, more relaxed sit-down session.

Because the district is relatively flat and walkable, all of the following cafés are within easy reach of Matadero Madrid. Some sit directly across the street, while others are a pleasant ten-minute stroll through the surrounding residential streets. This makes it easy to combine a cultural visit with a proper coffee break.

The coffee culture in this part of Madrid has evolved significantly in recent years. Alongside traditional neighbourhood bars, a wave of specialty coffee shops has brought lighter roasts, alternative brewing methods, and a more international approach to the local scene. That means you no longer have to choose between authenticity and a truly excellent cup.

Below is a curated list of the best cafés near Matadero Madrid, arranged to help you find the right spot for your mood, schedule, and coffee preferences.

Absolutely excellent experience at DOT Caffè Bar in Madrid! From the warm atmosphere to the friendly staff, everything was just perfect. The coffee was rich and smooth, served with care — exactly how it should be. But the real highlight? The choco croissant. Crispy on the outside, soft and buttery inside, with just the right amount of chocolate — honestly, one of the best I’ve ever had. If you’re in Madrid and looking for a cozy spot to enjoy a great coffee and a sweet treat, DOT Caffè Bar is a must-visit!

Great coffee, nice ladies that work here. Very polite, English speaking. Nice Cold Brew coffee and Macha
Erika Darbouze★★★★★
I loved the food so much!! The avocado toast with smoked salmon and the soft boiled eggs were truly spectacular! The food is so fresh!! Truly best smoke salmon I’ve had (ever) - the matcha was so good that I didn’t even add any sugar to it (which is unlike me) - I also ordered their potatoes chips - which has an interesting topping ( a little vinegary and sweet at the same time) weird combo but it strangely works! Lol The only downside was the wifi connection- if you need a nice cafe to work and eat - you will be doing more eating than working :/ I had to take the rest of my food to go because the network was so bad I couldn’t work. Nonetheless, I will be back sonner rather than later cuz that food was givinggg! 👌🏾

I give it 3 stars because even though the food is delicious, it’s just not exceptional. There’s a cool ambiance but usually there is always people waiting outside, that’s why we had higher expectations, at least the portions are big enough. Prices are in comparison a notch expensive. Staff is really lovely though. Surely you can at least go once and try it out. Accessibility: it’s just one floor, at the street entrance, easily accessible by wheelchair or crutches.
M H★★★★☆
All-day café with specialty coffee and good food. We've been here several times for breakfast. Some food items are delicious, like the tomato toast, the grilled-cheese sandwich with chutney, or the granola bowl. Other dishes we didn't like that much: The toast with banana, peanut butter and Oreo chips was very dry. The pastrami sandwich was made with unpleasantly thick slabs of meat and tasted bland. The coffee is from Barcelona's famous Nomad roastery. Both the espresso and batch brew tend to be on the conservative side, so don't expect funky stuff. The place itself is spacious, warm and inviting. There's also a small terrace.

Very beautiful cafeteria. Loved it! As I understood, the only thing they have and it's not vegan is the eggs, but they have vegan eggs as well, so I am not sure why they have eggs 😅. Great coffee, delicious tostadas and cakes, totally recommended place.

Awesome little place. Been there twice during a visit to Madrid over the weekend. Usually a big fan of coffee but I tried the iced matcha and banana bread. Don‘t order it if you‘re not hungry 😂 The slices are huge! Friendly staff and more than fairly priced for what you get.
Daniel Roures Rego★★★★★
I went to Dale Café for lunch today, and I loved everything I ate: the muhammara, the toast with cashew cheese and the dulce de leche cheesecake. Plus, I ordered a pistachio roscón de reyes, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff are super nice. Almost everything is vegan, including the roscón. I totally recommend this place.

Lovely small boutique style cafe with fresh brunch, tasty burrito & avocado bread, coffee, cake and a smoothie. Premium price for high-quality brunch. I highly recommend!

We went there for breakfast, we got a seat immediately and the service was also good. The food was really nice and generous. The juice is fresh and the oat milk latte was perfect.

Absolutely love this cafe!! We have been to this place for 2 days in a row. It’s a small, hidden-gem cafe with excellent coffee. The croissant and pain au chocolat are also great and yummy. I recommend ordering the avocado toast too; it’s cooked so well. Everyone at the coffee shop is so friendly and gives you good vibes & chill atmosphere.
Sahid Umarji★★★★★
What an amazing find this place is for breakfast. Do not let the size of the place or the interior fool you. The food is first class and prepared with love and care. The avocado toast with egg was one of the best i've had and my wife had the granola with fresh fruit and peanut butter which was so tasty. We've been twice in 1 week and I fully recommend this place
Andrew Livanos★★★★★
Incredible experience here. The coffee is absolutely perfectly roasted and the food was tasty. We tried the iberico toast with avocado and eggs - to die for! It gets busy here so good to go early in the morning.
Ilka Marra★★★★★
A cozy, charming specialty coffee shop with a rugged charm and very well curated menu. One of the most delicious flat whites I've had in Madrid. I really enjoyed my time here, I went early afternoon and had the place to myself for a while, perfect few minutes for journaling. After that, it quickly filled with customers, it's obviously a popular spot and for good reason. The only thing is that their dessert offerings didnt catch my eye very much, despite loving a sweet treat. But i'll be back for the coffee, it's really so good!
Caitlyn Bone★★★★★
I came here 3x during my stay in Madrid and did both take out and dine in. The seating space inside was small, although I thought it added to the intimate coffee shop vibe. They spoke both English and Spanish. I loved getting the Spanish latte and the yogurt granola bowl, which I got every time. The yogurt bowl was better dining in, in my opinion. Take out was still good, just seemed like less.

We visited Merienda during our trip to Madrid in June, and if I lived there, it would be one of my favorite spots. The food was absolutely delicious, and everything was prepared with so much care. We ordered takeaway, and the whole experience was seamless. Summer and her beautiful team were incredibly kind and welcoming, making us feel at home from the very first moment. Their warmth and hospitality made our visit even more special. Thank you for such a lovely experience. We can't wait to come back!

Super cute Korean coffee, they did a BTS theme while BTS performing in Madrid but even without BTS the coffee please transport you back to work Korea coffee place! Thanks for bringing your little home into Madrid!

Lovely people, as they complied with our requests right before closing time. Adorable staff and very well trained. Latte was a bit too bitter and bland tho 🙁

I normally don’t write reviews but this place was absolutely amazing! the staff is so friendly and kind. the food was delicious, the bulgogi has great flavor and the matcha was so creamy and good!

Best place ever. Since opening, it’s been a safe space for anyone who wants to have a sweet treat or enjoy a bit of studying or working in a peaceful place. Now they’re doing more fan events and it’s become a must attraction. The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating 💕 food is to die forrrrr! Soooo good! A MUST if you visit Spain or if you live in madrid.

Very cute little coffee shop. It’s tiny which adds to the charm. A nice mix of locals and tourists. Cosy starting point for a stroll across this beautiful diverse neighborhood. The coffee is great and so are the tostados. The two guys that were working here were lovely too. And prices are very fair as well.
Olena Zhukova★★★★★
spent a rainy morning here, and it couldn’t have been a better choice. The ambience is warm and peaceful — perfect for reading, meeting a friend, or just relaxing. And the coffee is truly top-tier. A place I’d happily return to and highly recommend!
Anastasia Yevtushenko★★★★☆
I didn’t really like the ice latte because it was too bitter for my taste. But the carrot cake was tasty! The barista wasn’t friendly but in general I liked the vibe of this place. And the music was nice.
Damian Górecki★★★★★
It's an interesting place, I like the concept of an open kitchen. Unfortunately, the staff didn't speak English, so communication was minimal. But that's ok, coffee is a universal language 😉 Breakfast was simple but tasty. The batch brew coffee was good, but it's a shame they didn't offer pour over. Only hojicha was average. Well, I drank better, even at home. Overall, it's a cozy place, good when you're in the area.
Janine Negrin★★★★★
Great place to stop for quality coffee and a toast. We loved the mocha orange. The matcha was fabulous too. The bread for the tomato toast is high quality. Friendly staff and perfect vibe.

I had the Brunch 2 and everything was absolutely wonderful and extremely delicious. The portions were generous and satisfying. The toast with scrambled eggs was simply delicious and perfectly seasoned. I also loved the yogurt, which was extraordinary, and the freshly squeezed orange juice was great. Finally, the brownie was one of the best I have ever had, and I highly recommend it!
David Cole★★★★★
Best coffee I have had in Madrid and it is not even close. Great vibes and nice and friendly staff. Highly recommend. I had the Yogurt Bowl. Flavorful granola and fresh fruit. French Toast is also excellent.
Stephanie MacKinnon★★★★★
Best coffee I have had during my two weeks in Madrid, without a doubt. It is clear that the owners are passionate about making great coffee, but they are also not pretentious about it. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, many locals popping in, but I too was made to feel welcome as a tourist. I only had one of the baked goods with my coffee but it was also delicious. 10/10 recommend checking out this place.
Stanislav Kozlovski★★★★★
Pretty good place. Can’t complain. Coffee was good. Good selection of chais and etc. very cool to have a quick quality coffee in the neighbourhood. Nice atmosphere to sit down and have a chat

Came here for brunch a while back and found our experience to be really nice. From the arrival, to the service, the food and paying up- this place really take care of their customers. I ordered a fresh orange juice with a Philly beef sandwich. The orange juice was served in a really cold cup, which was lovely. The Philly sandwich took me by surprise in terms of quality and flavour. Definitely a recommandation. The waitresses really take care of the place. They keep an eye out of what their customers might need, refill it without being asked and are present without it feeling like they are hovering you. The cafe does not have AC, but they do have several fans on that keeps the airflow moving. Cafe has a rustic, old'ish vibe with plenty of green. When the waitress noticed I didn't finish half of my sandwich, they asked if I wanted it to-go. Our entire experience from arriving to leaving was really great and you can tell that the staff between them have such good vibes. I really loved our brunch here and would definitely recommend this place.
srecko medjugorac★★★★★
There were four of us. We came on the recommendation of a young lady who already worked there and now has her own Coffee Shop with her mom. The four of us had breakfast. All the dishes were delicious. The staff is very polite and professional. The cafe is pleasant and the guests are also pleasant.
Omar Munawar★★★★★
This café in Madrid is a hidden gem for coffee lovers and breakfast enthusiasts. Their salmon is fresh, and their pickle has a unique texture and taste that’s neither too sour nor too sweet. The chicken sandwich with cheddar cheese is simply out of this world. I’m from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and I’ve had most delicious sandwiches, but this one stood out. The staff is incredibly friendly and patient, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. They also cater to Muslims by not selling pork. Their coffee is one of the best I’ve ever had. As a daily coffee drinker who’s tried all sorts of coffees, I had to ask the barista about their coffee. He revealed that they use a Belgian brand that blends mango, chocolate, and other infused flavors into the beans. The only thing they could improve is the climate. They only have fans, which makes it quite uncomfortable to dine in during the summer mornings.
Lasya Tata★★★★★
I was there for a brunch as I was staying at a hostel nearby. Very nice ambiance, the Chicken sandwich was great, the coffee was amazing and the people are so nice and good looking lol. The energy was fun and chill. Definitely recommend
Gezicilik★★★★☆
We ordered Turkish eggs, Pink salmon royale, Orange juice and basque cheesecake. The 'Turkish eggs' was delicious but I think it requires one more egg! - it comes with only one- Pink royale was also good and cheesecake was OK.

Been here at least 35 times in 2025 as of Dec. 26th If you’re looking for cozy vibes, Friends atmosphere, amazing craft beer and spectacular tapas - this is the place. The owner is someone special - his passion for what he does can be seen from miles away. Me and my friends that are coming here regularly like to call him “the shareholder” - at this point we’re doing “dolar cost averaging” on double IPAs All in all: if there is a place to choose for a last or only visit in Madrid - 200% it’s BeBop!

Delicious and unique beers. Tasty food (both savoury and sweet), although a few more vegan options would be appreciated. Also friendly staff and a cosy venue with some music legends on the wall.

One of our favorite spots in the barrio, we come here multiple times a month for the great service, veggie options, and even better vibe. And some of the best beer selections (including non-alcoholic options) you can find. They'll take good care of you here at BeBop!

Good food and friendly staff. They gave me some apple cucumber gazpacho as a starter that was amazing. The salmon sandwich or “mollete” was also excellent. I look forward to going back.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.

We Tried baked eggs with mushrooms / specials with sweet potato and baked egg with ham. The portion size is more than enough for one. Waiters were lovely. Had to wait a bit but overall great breakfast.

Busy vibe. The baked eggs are delicious. The salmon toasty is so good. Strongly recommended! Also the homemade peanut butter toast is so unique. the roasted peanut with honey and banana perfectly matched.

I love it! And definitely must have the baked eggs! Is a must! You will regret if you skip it! Thanks for a wonderful yummy breakfast! It brightened my day in Madrid

We had a great time at the Cantina. I've been before and sat outside in the garden area which is lovely. This time we were sat inside as the garden is closed at this time of year. The interior decor is awesome - they have retained many of the original features of the building, with some modern touches, and lovely lighting. Whilst the waiters were very friendly, I have to say the service was not the best - fairly slow and they forgot a couple of our dishes. The food was enjoyable but not very exciting, quite forgettable. Some of the dishes felt slightly lazy. I would definitely recommend La Cantina for the atmosphere and beautiful design - a perfect place to have a coffee or glass of wine. However, the food is not at the same high level - that's the reason for the 3 star review.
Julia Noriega★★★★★
Cozy place, very nice staff and veggie and gluten free options. Highly recommended to go after an exhibition in Matadero. You can either go for a fancy dinner in a table or have a drink and some snacks in the stairs. I really like the stairs area. It makes the place special. I recommend to make a reservation if you prefer a table to have dinner. We had zucchini and eggplant and it was amazing, very fresh and delicious! We'll come back for sure! ☺️

Very nice cantina. The service is quick and the people are nice. The food was fresh and really good. Interesting take on the daily dish where you pick 4 items to set your dish out of a list of 5.

This is one of my favorite places & restaurants in Madrid. The place is gorgeous, very cozy and friendly. The inside is beautiful and the terrace outside is just the highlight! The food is just amazing! I love Olivia te Cuida, they just know how to make the best Seasonal food, simply, tasty and always special with a special touch! Just perfect for me. Last but not least, the staff is just amazing, very friendly and professional at the same time. A secret place (not that secret....) and I hope it won't get too well known!! 😊 Merci beaucoup ! L.
CopyKat★★★☆☆
I truly wish I could give this place a better rating because the location and terrace are very cozy and their menu del dia is great for 14 euros. It’s a pity because the only issue with it is super unfriendly staff. I went a couple of times because I like food but people who work there always treat you not well. They are always in a rush and act like they have no time to take your order. They rarely smile or take time to make a small talk. This unfortunately ruins first two factors which I mentioned as positive. If they are so busy why not to hire help and let this beautiful place prosper? Truly a pity.

I’ve been here twice, and both times the service was very good. On my first visit, I ordered the avocado, tomato and salmon salad, and it was absolutely delicious (fresh and full of flavor). The owner was there that day (she made it), and she was incredibly friendly. She even came over to ask for my opinion. I also grabbed a coffee to go, and it was just as good. A couple of days later, I came back (last time service and food were really good) and ordered the same salad. The owner wasn’t there this time, and one of the waiters prepared it. It wasn’t bad at all, but you could tell he still needs a bit more training on the salad. Overall, it’s a tiny local place with a nice atmosphere, good food and coffee. Definitely recommended and I’ll happily return again if ever in Madrid.

Tips for Choosing the Right Café Near Matadero Madrid

The area around Matadero Madrid offers a wide range of coffee experiences, from quick traditional stops to modern specialty bars. A little planning can help you match the café to your specific needs, whether you are visiting on a busy weekend or a quiet weekday morning.

Time your visit around Matadero events. Exhibition openings, weekend markets, and theatre performances can fill nearby cafés quickly. Arrive before noon or after the lunch rush if you want a quieter seat and faster service.

Ask about the house roast. Many specialty cafés near Matadero rotate their beans frequently. If you prefer a classic, chocolatey espresso or a brighter, fruitier filter coffee, ask the barista for a recommendation rather than ordering blindly.

Check the kitchen hours. Some of the best coffee spots in the area only serve food until mid-afternoon. If you want a substantial brunch or a late sandwich, confirm the kitchen schedule before settling in.

Look for shaded outdoor seating. Madrid can be very hot from late spring through early autumn. A terrace or a seat near a window with good airflow will make your break much more comfortable, especially after walking along Madrid Río.

Bring a reusable cup for takeaway. If you plan to walk through the Matadero grounds or along the river with your coffee, a reusable cup keeps your drink warmer for longer and reduces waste. Several local cafés offer a small discount for bringing your own.

Do not overlook the traditional bars. While specialty coffee shops get much of the attention, a classic Spanish café in Delicias or Legazpi can offer excellent value, a more local atmosphere, and a perfectly pulled café solo at a fraction of the price.

The beauty of the area around Matadero Madrid is that it rewards slow exploration. The best approach is to choose one café as your starting point, then let the neighbourhood reveal its quieter corners, small plazas, and independent shops as you move between stops. A good coffee is often just the beginning of a much longer afternoon.

Whether you live in the area or are visiting Madrid for the first time, these cafés offer a genuine sense of place. They reflect the creative energy of the Matadero complex while remaining grounded in the daily rhythms of the surrounding barrios.
