Nantes may sit just under an hour from the Atlantic coast, but its culinary soul is firmly rooted in the fertile Loire Valley and the rustic kitchens of western France. While the city has embraced modern bistronomy and international flavors, there remains a deep reverence for the classic French dining experience. These are the tables where time slows down, sauces are reduced to perfection, and the clink of heavy silverware sets the rhythm of the afternoon.
Understanding what makes a restaurant "traditional" in Nantes goes beyond simply looking at the menu. It is about a dedication to the regional produce of the Loire-Atlantique, from the sweet Muscadet wines to the rich butter of local dairies and the delicate fish from the Loire estuary. These establishments prioritize hospitality, often passing down techniques and recipes through generations of local families.
For visitors and locals alike, dining at a classic French restaurant in Nantes is a cultural immersion. It is an opportunity to taste history, whether through a perfectly executed beurre blanc—a sauce that originated just upriver—or a slow-cooked coq au vin. The atmosphere in these dining rooms is often one of hushed elegance or warm, bistro-style bustle, but the commitment to quality remains identical.
Choosing the right restaurant can define your trip to this vibrant city. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner near the Château des Ducs de Bretagne or a long, leisurely lunch in the Passage Pommeraye, the city offers a diverse range of historic venues. From Michelin-starred institutions to beloved neighborhood bistros that have barely changed since the 1950s, there is a table for every palate.
This guide curates the most authentic and respected traditional dining experiences in Nantes. We have focused on venues that consistently deliver the staples of French gastronomy with impeccable service and a distinct sense of place. You will find restaurants serving game in the autumn, oysters in the winter, and delicate white asparagus in the spring.
Prepare your appetite for rich sauces, perfectly curated cheese trolleys, and desserts that demand to be savored. Below, you will find the definitive list of the twelve best traditional French restaurants in Nantes, followed by essential etiquette and dining tips to help you navigate the experience like a local.

I have been in Nantes second time and stayed Radisson Blu Hotel and found this restaurant next to hotel on Google Maps, and it’s was amazing especially bread, service and meals! You should definitely try this restaurant!
Brett Glencross★★★★★
This little unassuming gem in the heart of Nantes delivers cusine well above expectations. A little off the regular path. Out by its own, in a quiet area of Nantes Nord, with nothing overly eye catching in the restuarant visage, and a menu that seems solidly staid French. But the food was absolutely perfect. Traditional dishes, but with subtle flair. Classics cooked to perfection. I would have given them a 6 out of 5, but the system isn't set up that way. So, maybe just check the place out yourself.

A little gem in Nantes. Great classics taken to the next level, good wine list and lovely staff

I ordered the steak and the lamb shank; the steak was beautiful, no complaints there. And I was very surprised at the portion of the lamb shank, the amount of meat on it I believe would be cheaper per gram than buying a raw steak at a grocery store in Nantes. The service was great, incredibly fast. I was dining alone this day and my waiters made sure to converse with me about the food as they passed.
Only bad thing was that I was sitting outside and twice was approached by homeless begging for food.

Friday: Says open until 11pm online but kitchen closes at 9pm an employee told me.
We came back the next day Saturday night around 9:30pm and everything was awesome. Top quality food at a fair price. Service was efficient. Definitely recommend! The magrais de canard et la moelle était délicieux

When you are traveling recommendations are very important when they are deserving, and Chez Franklin deserves all the praise. From the warm welcome, the great (Motown) music, and the very interesting menu, all high points. We were so lucky to have a chance to eat here, we would be regulars if we lived nearby!
Teresa Simpson★★★★☆
Nice place with friendly service. We enjoyed the food but it took a bit too long to arrive. Found ourselves rationing the wine so we'd have enough to drink with the main course.

Thankyou to Chez Franklin for responding to my previous review which I have since deleted. This made me realise I had confused Chez Franklin with a restaurant we had attempted to eat at on the lunchtime - my apologies.
So yes we did eat here, it had been on my list of restaurants I had researched before our holiday with fish and vegetarian options.
Good menu, I had seabass ( the sauce in the little dish was stunning -see photo). From the photo I think my OH had mushroom risotto. We shared profiteroles for desert- excellent.

This restaurant was incredibly cozy, both in terms of the food and the service. Every dish I had featured subtle seasoning and flavors that really let the natural ingredients shine—it was a truly enjoyable meal.
My favorite was the pork terrine. The natural aroma of the pork was perfectly preserved and paired beautifully with the jelly, while the green onion in the sauce provided a lovely accent. With such warm and welcoming service, I honestly consider this one of the best restaurants in Europe.
Mark McCarthy★★★★★
Interior decor is very cool: rabbits, toy cars, and art. The food was great: we had the crab cake, sea bass, and steak. Drinks were excellent and prices were good. The staff inquired about every dish to ensure it was good.
Nick Vlahos★★★★★
I had a great weekday lunch there alone a few weeks ago. I showed up at 1230 without a reservation and in broken French mixed with some English and gestures arranged to come back at 1330. I had a terrine to start, an arrancini with riced raw zucchini as my main with a glass of wine, and a cheese course and an espresso to finish. Everything was excellent and the staff was very understanding of my lack of French language skills.
Ola Smolińska★★★★★
Very good experience in a local and cosy bistro. The quality as well as the quantity was great. The staff was very kind and helpful and did some recommendations 🙂
We took the local sausage and andouillette. Both were excellent. And for the dessert we took the specialty of the house, it was a kind of chocolate cake with pistachio sauce and it was also amazing. Highly recommended!

Excellent service. Everything is homemade. Good value for money. I eat there at least once a week. The menu changes every week, and sometimes even during the week.

I've had lunch twice at Les Filles du Maronnier and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The welcome is warm and the place is lovely – the interior is very cozy and the courtyard/terrace is perfect for enjoying sunny moments! We recently celebrated my birthday there with about fifteen friends, including children, and we opted for the chicken and fries option – it was delicious. I highly recommend it!

This is my second time having lunch at this restaurant. The staff is friendly and energetic, and the place is very charming with a lovely courtyard. The second dining room overlooks a pétanque court, and it's really nice to watch people learning to play.
The dishes and desserts are truly excellent, and since the menu is on a chalkboard, it changes frequently.

The food is alright. The waiter doesn’t speak English and the menu is only in French. So I ordered a menu etudiant it is 12.5 euro( I saw the comment from other restaurants that they have lunch menu offering a drink, savory and sweet crepe for a good price) but the waiter did not confirm with me that is only for students and I need to present a student ID( or should I be flattered that I look like a student?). I only knew it when I paid, he charged me 17.2 euro by adding up every thing one by one . Just order one item or the restaurant should work on a English menu! Should have gone to other crepe restaurant….

The food was great and glutenfree gallete with buckwheat was very tasty! There might be cross contamination so do ask them to check on that. The waiter was a little but slow on the service considering the restaurant was nearly empty at the time in the afternoon.

Had such a great dinner for two at Le Lion et L’Agneau tonight. Everything was delicious, a really fine dine experience. The atmosphere felt warm, relaxed, and really special. Biggest shoutout to our server who was absolutely lovely: friendly, attentive, incredibly knowledgeable about the wines, and gave us perfect recommendations throughout the evening. Easily one of the best meals we’ve had in Nantes.

Just landed from Madrid and stumbled in- unfortunately no open tables except outside- but actually outside was so nice! (But I think if you want to come during peak dinner hours you should make a reservation)
Ordered the razor clams with chorizo- did not know this combo worked but wow! And then the pork! So good!
Def recommend this spot if you’re craving something other than pizza. The jap ramen next door was also very busy!
Leon Jeffrey★★★★★
Superb from start to finish. To start with the staff are incredibly friendly, environment was relaxed but elegant, food was delicious.
We had the dinner 3 course menu (42€) quality, size, presentation all of excellent value to the price.
Even better still, they happily catered a bespoke menu for the vegetarian of the group.
Thank you all for an excellent evening
Kristy Chen★★★★★
Super delicious, everything was cooked perfectly ranging from the meat to the pasta noodles. Better pasta paella here than what I’ve had in Barcelona. I enjoyed the sauce as well, although the dishes were a tad heavy. Definitely more for lunch or dinner rather than brunch items. Would recommend.
Michele Coluccia★★★★★
Very nice restaurant. The staff really tried to accommodate us according to our requests. The menu doesn't include a lot of choice but everything that we tried was superb. We enjoyed the little extras like the garlic cream and the chocolate truffles. We tried the langoustines and the guinea fowl and they were delicious. Prices are average.

Amazing good and service! Got the fish if the day and it was just what I needed! We also tried out the desserts (the mouse au chocolat and the crème brûlée) all equally as good! Definitely recommend this place! If you're eating early around (7:30pm) a reservation may not be required but it did get quite busy around 9pm.
Bradley Thomas★★★☆☆
We generally had good food and received friendly, if not a little chaotic, service. The lamb main was incredibly tender and was well complemented by the fragrant onion rice. Unfortunately, the experience was massively let down by the crème brûlée.
Quite simply, this was wrong - it resembled slightly split scrambled egg, rather than the smooth delicate set custard it should be - see photo attached.
Jenna Blaustein★★★★★
We were sent here by our hotel and could not have enjoyed ourselves more. The food was fresh and very tasty, the waiter delightful and sitting outside on this pedistrian only street, taking our time was a wonderful experience.

That day, we had rented bikes and were on our way back from Jardin Extraordinaire in Nantes, very hungry, when we stopped here because it looked like a lovely place for dinner. We began with oysters, cheese, and snails, followed by tomato carpaccio with burrata and a mackerel potato salad. My wife and daughter had gazpacho and onglet de boeuf. Everything was delicious. We finished with crème brûlée and, for my still very hungry daughter, a little more cheese.

A lovely and friendly place with impeccable service. We especially enjoyed the gorgonzola appetizer ☺️. They also offer regional dishes, always with a fish, meat, or daily special option 👌🏻. It's worth noting that the service isn't plated; small trays are brought out so everyone can help themselves 👌🏻. A bottle of red wine is included with the meal, making it excellent value for money 🥰. €21 per person. The chef, his wife, and the waiter were charming and very welcoming; we had a very pleasant time.
Jack Willberg★★★★★
Le Havre is exactly the kind of restaurant you need to discover if you truly want to understand what real French cuisine is all about. Not the kind found on expensive, sophisticated menus, but everyday, homemade fare, full of generosity, made with heart and a genuine story.
You enter a small room, just a few tables, with simple, unpretentious decor, almost DIY, with old wooden headboards separating the tables. You immediately sense that you're in a special place. The owner himself cooks in this restaurant, which he's run for decades. And frankly, it shows in the food.
As soon as you sit down, the lunch menu is placed in front of you, along with a bottle of water and a bottle of table red wine, just like at home. You feel welcomed, without any fuss, in a spirit of genuine conviviality. And when the dishes arrived, the surprise was complete: not only was it delicious, but it was also beautifully presented, much more refined than one might imagine from the storefront. I still remember that squid salad, so expertly prepared.
It was a wonderful discovery, a truly authentic place. If I were to tour France's best little restaurants, this is exactly the type I would look for. Because this kind of place tells a story. And I would really like more people to discover this facet of our culture, as simple as it is precious.
Thank you to this family for this experience. I will gladly return.

A very special place as it's also a flea market. The dishes are classical French dishes very well prepared. Selection of wine is good and service was fast and very polite. It was very hot inside but not much can be done when it's a heat wave outside.

Tourist trap. This was the place one person in our group booked last minute on the single day we did not have a dinner reservation. Makes sense why they have tables. It’s so bad. The razor clams were the highlight (of how terrible the food can get). Just don’t go here. Worst food I had in France.
Phil Cook★★★★★
Had ear marked Chez Maman before visiting Nantes and it did not disappoint. An incredibly generous dish of beef bourguignon was ideal for this Sunday lunch: big chunks of beek cheeky (I think) were so moreish with plenty of sauce, little baby onions, carrots and a huge service of fries. My partner enjoyed an equally homely chicken main course. The cider we had was so delicious. I couldn't not order a classic creme brulee and it was just perfect. Sarah enjoyed a super rich chocolate fondant that was warm and so unctuous. Great little restaurant to watch the world go by with food at an appealing price point and very laid back, friendly service. One of our best meals in Nantes - highly recommend
Essential Tips for Dining at a Traditional French Restaurant in Nantes
To fully appreciate the culinary heritage of Nantes, it helps to understand the rhythms and rules of the French table. Dining here is not just about eating; it is an event meant to be enjoyed without rush. The following recommendations will help you secure a table, order with confidence, and respect the traditions that make these restaurants so special.
1. Book Ahead, Especially for Dinner
The best traditional restaurants in Nantes are often small and highly sought after by locals. Walk-ins are rarely accommodated during peak hours, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. Call ahead or book online a few days in advance, and if you are visiting during major events like La Folle Journée, secure your table weeks ahead.
2. Embrace the "Menu" Formula
Most traditional restaurants offer a menu (a fixed-price set meal) that provides excellent value compared to ordering à la carte. This usually includes a starter (entrée), main course (plat), and dessert. It is the best way to taste the chef’s signature dishes without breaking the bank.
3. Understand the Pace of Service
Service in a traditional French restaurant is intentionally unhurried. Waiters will not bring the bill until you ask for it. Do not view the slow pace as neglect; it is a sign of respect for your dining experience. Settle in, enjoy your wine, and expect lunch to take at least ninety minutes.
4. Pair Your Meal with Local Muscadet
Nantes is the capital of Muscadet wine country. This dry, crisp white wine is the perfect pairing for the region’s seafood and buttery sauces. Ask for a Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie, which has a slight effervescence and a creamy texture that cuts through rich dishes beautifully.
5. Do Not Skip the Cheese Course
In France, cheese is served before dessert, not after. If you have room, opt for the plateau de fromages. This is where you will find local gems like Curé Nantais, a pungent, square-shaped cheese that is a specialty of the region.
6. Mind Your Dining Manners
Keep your hands on the table (not in your lap), and place your bread directly on the tablecloth next to your plate rather than on a side plate. When you are finished, place your fork and knife parallel across the plate to signal the waiter that you are done.
The traditional restaurants of Nantes offer more than just a meal; they offer a connection to the soul of the region. By stepping into these historic dining rooms, you are participating in a ritual that has defined French culture for centuries. Whether you are enjoying a simple plate of moules frites or a complex multi-course tasting menu, the emphasis is always on the quality of the ingredients and the joy of sharing them.
Take your time, strike up a conversation with your server about the wine list, and allow yourself to linger over a coffee at the end of the meal. In a city that moves at a modern pace, these traditional tables remain a sanctuary for those who understand that great food requires time, both in the kitchen and at the table.
