10 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Nantes

Nantes may be celebrated for its majestic Château des Ducs de Bretagne and the whimsical Machines de l’Île, but the city’s culinary reputation has undergone a vibrant transformation in recent years. Once firmly rooted in traditional French gastronomy—think rich butter sauces and slow-cooked meats—the “Venice of the West” now pulses with a dynamic plant-based food scene. Travelers and locals alike no longer need to compromise on flavor or atmosphere when seeking a meal without meat.

The demand for vegetarian and vegan cuisine in France has surged, and Nantes has answered the call with creativity and flair. From cozy neighborhood bistros tucked away in the Bouffay district to sleek, modern eateries near the Loire River, the city offers a remarkable diversity of meat-free dining. Whether you are a strict vegan, a flexitarian, or simply someone looking to enjoy a lighter meal, Nantes provides an impressive array of options that celebrate fresh, local produce.

What makes Nantes particularly special for vegetarian travelers is the emphasis on sourcing. The surrounding Loire-Atlantique region is a treasure trove of organic farms, market gardens, and artisan producers. Many of the city’s best vegetarian restaurants have built their menus around this bounty, ensuring that the vegetables on your plate were often harvested just hours before service. This commitment to locality elevates simple ingredients into memorable dining experiences.

Navigating a foreign food scene can be daunting, especially when dietary restrictions are involved. However, Nantes is an exceptionally welcoming city for herbivores. Menus are clearly labeled, staff are generally knowledgeable about allergens and dietary needs, and the sheer volume of dedicated vegetarian venues means you will never have to settle for a sad side salad. The city has truly embraced the idea that vegetarian food is not a limitation but an opportunity for innovation.

In this guide, we have curated a selection of the finest vegetarian-friendly restaurants that Nantes has to offer. These establishments have been chosen for their consistency, their dedication to plant-based cooking, and their ability to provide an authentic taste of the region. Whether you are visiting for a weekend or settling in for a longer stay, these culinary gems are sure to satisfy your palate and enrich your travel experience.

Below, you will find our handpicked selection of the best spots in the city. After the list, be sure to check out our practical tips for dining vegetarian in Nantes to help you navigate the local culture with confidence.

Great people running this small place. Good food. I recommend.

We unexpectedly came across this little restaurant in an unassuming street in Nantes. Delighted to find a vegan restaurant in France! The food is excellent, the menu imaginative and the lady who served us was passionate about the dishes and ingredients. The only reason I dropped a star was that several dishes were no longer available. This little place was full inside and out which usually gives a good idea how popular it is. Would definitely return to sample some more.

I was pending to put a review here: I got food poisoning after eating here with my brother Nicolas. The service was 5/5 but the food poisoning was bad.

Perfect service, the ladies were happy to serve me a late lunch. The lasagne was packed with flavour and really hit the spot, accompanied by a generous almond latte - just need some ambient music and you’re golden!

Went here for supper on May 1st. I was so delighted to find them open (on a holiday). They had just started a new menu which was tricky to choose from. My partner got the sticky tofu and I had the asparagus one. You pay a flat fee for a pre-determined plate. 19 Euros. Everything was delicious. The service was courteous and good. Nice, relaxed atmosphere. As an English speaker with only a bit of French, they helped me out.

This is a fabulous find well worth going out of your way. I ate here first while visiting Nantes in February, and I couldn’t wait to go back for this trip. I am gluten free, and most of the menu is, at this vegan restaurant. The food is SO tasty that I asked my waitress if the chef had written a cookbook. Unfortunately, not. The food is also presented beautifully, and the baked goods there are “chef’s kiss” good. The atmosphere is charming, with a small tea room downstairs, a room upstairs with comfy chairs and a couch as well as tables, and a few tables upfront. It’s right across from the cathedral. I’m including photos from my visit in February as well. Highly recommend.

Fantastic, cozy coffee and pastries. Almost all gluten free! 🤩 Ok, as good as the gf pastries looked, they tasted EVEN BETTER! 🤩😍 Soooooooo yummy. Highly recommend.

Good place, cozy atmosphere, nice staff ! The main dish alone isn’t very big, but it’s perfect when paired with a starter or a dessert

Delicious! So wonderful to have an amazing new vegan option in Nantes!

The positive- excellent operating hours, great neighborhood vibe, good ambiance The negative-I went there this morning (Aug 4) and asked for a "mint chocolate latte". The waitress said (in English, because she realized I speak English), "oh, so you want a chocolate milk with mint"? I replied, "No, I would like a mint chocolate LATTE, meaning it has coffee in it as well". Then she said, "oh, none of our latte's have coffee in them, they only have milk, no coffee." I was very confused and said "then why is it called a latte 🤯" (because every latte I've had in France or any other country, always had coffee in it) In my mind, latte = espresso + steamed milk. Then she said, "oh, latte" means something different in French, it's just milk with a flavor." So I asked for a "mint chocolate latte" and asked her to add some coffee into it. €7 for this! I found their use of the word "latte" to be very misleading/confusing. Sadly, I also found it to be way overpriced for what it was. 😔

Excellent brunch, generous portions, and a beautiful presentation that makes you hungry! The price is really reasonable for the quality of what's served. Lovely atmosphere and a warm welcome both in the dining room and in the kitchen. I was even able to bring my dog (muzzled) and find him a spot where he could relax and enjoy his meal in his own way, without disturbing anyone or being disturbed. We'll be back! And we wish this new establishment, "Oh K'fée dMJ," great success! 🙌🏻

We were in the area after travelling from England, and were happy to find a vegan café in Nantes after a quick search. We were very impressed by the quality of the food, it was excellent. I had a vegan burger and my husband had tofu and chips. He also enjoyed the coffee. The service was good and the atmosphere too. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Loved our meal here one of the highlights of the trip. Had the vegan burger and tofish and chips which were amazing, never had anything like it. Prices were reasonable and service was great. Would definitely recommend

Cute eco friendly space and very clean! The food was very good, and we enjoyed the chat with the lovely staff girl who served us. We took the hamburger and tofish & chips and they were both delicious and filling. My only regret is that I didn’t leave any room for dessert as they all looked epic!
Luuk Akkerman★★★★★
You won't find a better vegan place like this! Literally ticks all the boxes. Friendly people, delicious vegan dishes including vegan cheeses, cares about waste/recycling/composting, small book/gift section vegan related, kids corner.. has it all. We had the green burger and fish&chips which we enjoyed so much. Please pay them a visit and treat yourself!
Tamara V.★★★★★
Delicious! I'm surprised we could find such a nice vegan restaurant in Nantes! I was really curious about their Tofish and chips, and even though we didn't get there that late, they had already ran out of chips. They did offer to replace the chips with veggies and we decided to give it a try, it was not the same experience but the Tofish was incredible!!! Definitely worth the try, even without chips. We also tried their bowl of the day, which this time consisted of rice, lentils and veggies, I really loved it! I could complain tho about the service being a bit slow, but they only have one waitress so it's ok. If I'm ever back in Nantes I will definitely repeat!

Wow this place is incredible! Me and my parents visited last week, I think the menu is changed daily and it’s really unique and creative dishes that are served. I called ahead, I cannot speak much French but the lady who runs it was so wonderful and kind and said she would make me something vegan. They do usually always have a vegetarian option but best to check ahead for a vegan option. We were greeted by our waiter Paul who went above and beyond in his service to us, he was patient with our little French and helped my parents order meat and fish dishes. Everything was delivered, fast, efficient and so very friendly. The dishes themselves are like little pieces of art, they are put together with such care, you can really feel the love from the chef (shame I didn’t catch her name) 💚 As the chef had prepared 3 vegan courses I went for all 3 and glad I did, each one was a delight and my parents said the same about theirs. If you are in Nantes you must visit and make sure to make a booking. If we could give 10 stars we would. Paul is a real credit to the restaurant as it’s rare that you get such amazing food, welcome and service in one, we hope to see him when we return! Thank you
Archna Sharma★★★★★
The best 3 course vegan meal I have ever had! Highly recommend this place. The chef is excellent. The staff (chef's loving wife!) was so kind to explain all the dishes to us in great detail for us to decide what to order. The presentation was amazing and the food was delicious! If you are in Nantes, please go to La Cachette🙂

I have visited "The Hideout" multiple times, and each visit has been an absolute delight. While the menu is concise, it reflects the high quality of the food offered. Every dish is homemade, using fresh ingredients, and the owner takes the time to explain each one beautifully. The restaurant offers a fixed 3-course meal, which is well worth the experience. The pricing is reasonable considering the exceptional quality of the food. The intimate setting, with its small dining room, creates a quiet and enjoyable atmosphere. I totally recommend it!!!
Hanna Se★★★★★
Excellent food and very friendly owner/service. The taste of the food was outstanding and we could feel it was made with a lot of care and expertise. The place was small and cozy, which made you feel special. Only good to be aware is that this is not a place you order quickly food, eat and leave. It’s a celebration of dinning with 3 courses and you need to take some time when you go there. It’s a great value for the price and an experience I recommend to everyone.
Len★★★★★
The warm welcome was followed by excellent food. My wife is gluten intolerant so she often struggles to get anything decent to eat. La Cachette exceeded all expectations for her and my expectations. We didn’t booked a table and as far as I could see all the tables were occupied

Firstly the attentive service is great! Super lovely! The food is incredible the xiao long bao is great! Soupy, fantastic. Chicken was well seasoned, NOT spicy which is a bummer (for me) but delicious. The rice balls were also great the meat inside super tender. The small rice bowls on offer is a cute touch and was very good. All details are there. Overall fantastic experience ! Excited to be back!

Looking for a restaurant still open at 2 pm, we went to Le Clin d'œil on the recommendation of my friend. The value for money is unbeatable. The dishes are delicious, well-prepared, healthy, and made with fresh ingredients. On top of that, the welcome is warm and the owners are lovely. I will definitely go back next time I'm in Nantes.
Capucine Vivant★★★★★
A workers' cafeteria-style restaurant, like a school cafeteria. You go in and take a tray with cutlery, a glass, and a napkin, your starter and/or dessert from the fresh display case, then you go to the counter to order your main course and pay for your meal deal. There's limited seating. It's very busy and there's little stock. Everything is usually sold out by 1:00 or 1:30 PM. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is simple and welcoming, and the food is good, offering a fresh take on classic dishes with just the right twist to surprise you without making you feel out of place.
Arnaud Wéry★★★★★
What a treat! I came here on the recommendation of an acquaintance and enjoyed it so much that I went back two days later. I really loved the food. Don't be put off by a menu that might seem short compared to what you find elsewhere: the hardest part is choosing! 😉 They always have vegetarian options. It was delicious both times. The service is also very friendly, with staff who take the time to explain everything with a smile. I also loved the ambiance. In short, just writing this review makes me want to go back! 😄 One last thing: it's ideally located near the train station, convenient when you arrive or are waiting for your train home.
Sonia Lechene★☆☆☆☆
I came to eat lunch at this restaurant. I'm allergic to sesame. I ordered the vegetarian dish, clearly stating my allergy and asking if it contained sesame. I was told no! I started having a severe allergic reaction and only ate a third of my meal. I went straight to the office to get an epinephrine injection and took antihistamines and corticosteroids. No allergen list for you!!! Seriously!!! I can't accept that people's health is being played with! It's unacceptable!

Superb vegetarian options and desserts. Wonderful service; welcoming and friendly with explanations of each of the items on the plate. We wanted to go back but were sad to find that the restaurant is closed for the season. Highly recommend for when they re-open! ❤️

Delicious vegan menú and very friendly staff but no vegan dessert unfortunately. Overall, a bit pricey for the quantity but definitely worth a visit.
Kim Comer★☆☆☆☆
Food was solid Mediterranean fare, nothing interesting or exciting/different. Very expensive for what I would expect as a basic variety plate from another restaurant (27€ for babaganoush, falafel, hummus, rice, chicken, etc). The staff was extremely nice and welcoming, but we were almost alone in the restaurant. The pita bread was stale, but we did get free refills on bread.
Rui Sampaio★★★★★
An absolute surprise for a casual dinner pick. We were served a large variety of dishes and each one was incredibly tasty. The desserts were amazing. The staff was extremely kind and taught us everything about the dishes we were tasting. Will be coming back the next time we're in Nantes!
Nevethitha Arasappan★☆☆☆☆
I had the worst experience In this restaurant. The lady was very rude to us. And they took a lot of time to serve the food and the food wasn't actually too good and we paid a bomb for it. I personally would give zero Star for the service they provide and the way they treat the customers. We just asked for a hot water the lady said that she couldn't provide us and asked us to buy a tea. I literally had a worst experience and spoiled my mood by choosing this bad restaurant. She wasn't respectful as a customer we pay for the food . we aren't eating it free. Her behavior is not acceptable and agreeable.

Practical Tips for Vegetarian Dining in Nantes

While Nantes is remarkably accommodating, a little local knowledge can go a long way in enhancing your dining experience. Understanding the rhythms of French meal times and the nuances of the menu can help you avoid common tourist pitfalls. Here are some essential strategies to ensure you eat well throughout your stay in this beautiful city.

1. Respect the French meal schedule.
Unlike many major international cities, Nantes largely adheres to traditional French dining hours. Lunch is typically served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and dinner service rarely begins before 7:30 PM. If you find yourself hungry at 4:00 PM, you may struggle to find a kitchen that is open. Plan your sightseeing around these hours, or stock up on snacks from local markets like Marché de Talensac to tide you over.

2. Look for the words “végétalien” and “végétarien.”
While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, knowing the French terminology is helpful. “Végétarien” means vegetarian (usually includes dairy and eggs), while “végétalien” means vegan (strictly plant-based). If you are vegan, always specify “sans produits laitiers, sans œufs, et sans miel” (no dairy, no eggs, and no honey) to ensure the kitchen fully understands your needs.

3. Explore the crêperies.
Breton cuisine is a saving grace for vegetarians in western France. Nantes is historically part of Brittany, and traditional crêperies are everywhere. The “galette de sarrasin” (buckwheat crêpe) is naturally gluten-free and often comes with vegetarian fillings like cheese, mushrooms, spinach, and egg. These are usually affordable, filling, and offer a genuine taste of regional culture without any meat.

4. Don’t overlook the “formule du midi.”
For the best value, dine out at lunchtime. Most restaurants offer a “formule” or “menu du midi,” which is a fixed-price set menu including an entrée, main course, and sometimes dessert. This is significantly cheaper than ordering à la carte in the evening. It is also a great way to sample the chef’s creativity, as vegetarian options are frequently featured prominently on these lunch menus.

5. Book ahead for dinner.
Nantes is a bustling university city, and the best vegetarian spots fill up quickly, especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Many of the smaller, independent restaurants have limited seating. Making a reservation—even just a few hours in advance—is highly recommended to avoid disappointment. You can usually book easily by phone or via their social media pages.

6. Visit the local markets for a picnic.
For the ultimate fresh and budget-friendly meal, head to Marché de Talensac or the smaller neighborhood markets. Here you will find stalls overflowing with local goat cheese, organic breads, seasonal fruits, and ready-made vegetarian spreads. Grab a baguette, some local muscadet wine, and a selection of treats, then enjoy a picnic along the Erdre riverbanks for a quintessential Nantes experience.

The evolution of Nantes into a vegetarian haven reflects a broader shift in French gastronomy, where vegetables are finally taking center stage. Chefs here are treating produce with the same reverence once reserved for meat and fish, resulting in dishes that are inventive, satisfying, and deeply rooted in the terroir of the Loire Valley. From gourmet tasting menus to casual street food, the city proves that plant-based eating can be both indulgent and accessible.

As you wander through the medieval streets and along the quays, let your appetite guide you to these exceptional establishments. The combination of passionate chefs, high-quality local ingredients, and a welcoming atmosphere ensures that your vegetarian journey through Nantes will be as memorable as the city’s iconic sights. Bon appétit!
