15 Best Bars in La Rochelle

La Rochelle moves to a rhythm dictated by the Atlantic tide. By day, the Vieux Port sparkles under the sunlight, framed by medieval towers and the gentle clinking of sailboat rigging. But as the sun dips below the horizon, the city transforms. The historic limestone streets of the old town warm with the glow of lanterns, and the air fills with the sound of conversation, laughter, and the unmistakable pop of a cork leaving a bottle of local wine.

This is a city that understands the art of the apéro. Drinking here is not a race; it is a cultural ritual. Whether you are a student from the local university, a yachtsman who has just docked after a transatlantic crossing, or a traveler looking for a quiet corner, La Rochelle offers a venue for every mood. From hidden wine caves to breezy rooftop terraces, the diversity of the drinking scene is staggering.

However, navigating the cobblestone maze of the Rue Saint-Nicolas or the bustling Quai Duperré can be overwhelming. The tourist traps are plentiful, serving overpriced cocktails with a side of indifference. To truly experience the city like a local, you need to know where to slip away from the main drag and find the spots that prioritize atmosphere, craft, and genuine hospitality.

We have spent long evenings exploring the lantern-lit arcades and the industrial edges of the port to curate a definitive list. Our selection focuses not just on the drinks, but on the experience—the texture of the wood on the bar, the knowledge of the staff, and the quality of the playlist. We value places with history as much as those pushing the boundaries of modern mixology.

Below, you will find a handpicked selection of the best establishments this maritime city has to offer. Whether you are hunting for a rare Belgian beer, a natural wine from the Loire Valley, or a perfectly balanced Negroni, this guide has you covered. These are the places where memories are made, anchored by the spirit of the Atlantic.

From the moment you walk in, you’re not a customer — you’re family. A huge thank you to Sandy, the super awesome boss, and the absolute legends behind the bar Lucile and Ali — your kindness, warmth, humour, and incredible service made my time in La Rochelle truly unforgettable. You made me feel welcome, safe, seen, and at home in a foreign city — and that is something truly rare. The laughs, the conversations, the atmosphere, the energy, the care, the music, the people… everything about this place is pure magic I’m genuinely sad to be leaving, because places like this don’t exist everywhere. MacEwan’s is unique, soulful, and full of heart — a true community, not just a bar. This place will always be part of my La Rochelle memories, and I already know I’ll be coming back. Coming here for the rugby was truly a blessing!!! Thank you for everything — for the love, the vibes, the service, the friendship, and the feeling of belonging 🤍 À très bientôt — I can’t wait to return 🇫🇷 My little La Rochelle family 🤍

The wide selection of single malts and the fact that they have Murphys on tap alone is worth 5 stars. On top of that I also enjoyed the exceptionally friendly service and good atmosphere.

A pint of Guinness was a staggering 9€, more than París or London. Probably the most expensive Guinness in Europe, I dont know how they can possibly justify that. A pity, because apart from the extortionate prices, it is a lovely bar
Paula Heron★★★★★
Fabulous bar opposite our hotel. Lovely service, great ambience and fab beers, wine and coffees. They also do small plates of saucisson, charcuterie and cheese for 6-8€ - lovely place
Christian★★★★★
Great beer selection! Wonderful plate of appetizers while you wait or don't care about dinner. Friendly staff.
Hugo Moracchini★★★★★
The simple fact that you can get pitchers of any flavored wine that you wish makes this bar amazing. Add on the friendly staff, great happy hour deals and wild ambiance around midnight and you've got one of the best bars in La Rochelle! Warning: gets extremely crowded sometimes.
frederic arnoux★★★★☆
We went there for a drink and it did it! Although nothing stricking, it's quiet and peaceful, located onto a small square, with a large tree. We appreciated the waitress that was nice and smiley. We will definitely go there again.

Very fun bar! The aesthetic was really great, a sort of Jules Verne steampunk with modern references throughout, like a sign for Rapture (Bioshock) and a Lovecraftian symbols. Staff was very friendly but unintrusive. When I went at opening time it was completely empty. Selection of drinks is great, lots of cocktails, and some French beers on tap. Music was fairly loud, but not obnoxiously so, and it was a fun mix of rap/hip-hop and rock
Suellen Trigo Caffrey★★★★★
I was there with my husband and we had soooo much fun. They have a great selection of cocktails and beers, a lovely beer garden, and tasty snacks. The decoration is class! We stayed there for hours tasting their delicious drinks, playing cards and having the best craic ever! Every staff member was very nice to us. I highly recommend it!

Silvio Di Mascio★★★★★
We discovered this bar about a year ago with a friend, and it's become one of our favorite spots. The atmosphere is warm and authentic; you really feel at home there. Special mention to the owners: they are welcoming, passionate, and always offer great advice. The tapas are excellent, showcasing high-quality Italian products. The Italian influence is evident in every dish, and for me, it evokes my roots and precious childhood memories… a true Proustian madeleine. A wonderful discovery that I wholeheartedly recommend. I can't wait to go back again and again.
Domenico Girelli★★★★★
Very welcoming place, the guys are nice, he is French, she is Italian, fantastic platters, quality cold cuts and cheeses, then the large plate with the meatballs, delicious, good guys, if you pass by Rochelle, stop by, it's worth it
Manon Boutet★★★★★
A wonderful discovery this Monday evening with friends! We were looking for a friendly tapas bar and we weren't disappointed. The cocktails were all excellent, the platters were made with very good ingredients, we loved the fries, the popcorn, the chicken, and... everything else! Thank you for your kindness, we'll be back!
Auxane Richard★★★★★
If you're looking for high-quality ingredients and expert preparation, this is the perfect place! We ordered sharing platters and two excellent cocktails! Plus, we got the Klub offer. We'll definitely be back! Thank you!

Quick service, buzzy vibe, cold beer, hot food. Good for people watching. Only dropping it a star because food is mostly of the fried type. But sometimes that’s all you need.

Very welcoming staff. The sound system is very good compared to other karaoke places we've been to. I think the volume can be a bit lowered as we had to put on earplugs to live through the night 😅

Lovely Gin Fizz! Nice little bar.
Richie Duliban★☆☆☆☆
Shouted at by a waiter before even entering the building. So I left straight away. ******* There was no physical contact between us. I was entering your bar and then you appeared out of nowhere carrying a drink. How was I supposed to recognise you for a waiter? You could have been a client carrying a drink from the bar. I tried my best to get to the side but it seemed you wanted me to use some sort of magic powers to disappear. Then you resorted to shouting at me in front of your clients Parisian style. Not very kind at all. You could have just spoken to me after.

This quickly became our favourite bar in La Rochelle. It is popular with quite a mix of customers so always interesting. We liked to sit outside in the evening to watch the world go by sipping our very well mixed cocktails. Space is limited but we are early people. The staff are great and very friendly. I noted that someone claimed to have been conned here, but the bar does not work that way. You have to go to the till to pay, I've never had a bill bought to me. I suspect the two chaps knew that but the people they conned did not.
Anna★☆☆☆☆
The cocktails are great but be ready to pay extra 50 Euros for waitress' mistake. On 27th of may 3 of us went to the bar and made an order. Soon 2 men came to our table asking sit there because there was no a table for them. They ordered 2 cocktails for themselves and 3 for us. After 15 minutes they decide to leave but we stayed there for longer. They asked for a bill (total of 5 cocktails) but waitress said she doesn't have time or something like that. They were waiting for her and after left without paying. What was the surprise when she asked us to pay for them (we agreed to pay for all we eat and drink and even for offered 3 cocktails). So after long negotiations we paid for everything because her argument was "I don't need to pay for that but you will". But I am sorry it's your duty to check who paid and who didn't and it's you who didn't bring a bill for men when they asked. In situation of her mistake (waitress with red curly hair) and their fraud (2 men) its we who paid the bill. 1 star for really great cocktails without any question.
Hannah Gardiner★☆☆☆☆
Super slow service and rude staff. Waited over 20 minutes for a drink, went inside at one point and was made to feel stupid and told 'service is outside'

Did not try the food, but want to give 5 stars for the service and welcome. Attempted to get drinks at La Grand’Rive next door, and was completely ignored and treated terribly by their rude waitress. This was a nice experience at Les Enfants du Rock! Also A+ for offering sans alcohol biere!

Amazing bar really if you want a good time with good drinks
Rebecca S.Saade★☆☆☆☆
Very odd, the bouncer just looked us up and down and then turned to let those behind us in. It felt like nightclub style filtering for what is just a bar. When you look at other reviews you can clearly see that they favor younger clientele and it's true the other customers were very young and drunk out of their minds. Very sus tbh

Had some yummy cocktails here! The staff was friendly and the drinks arrived quickly. Sadly, our visit was cut short due to a rain downpour!

We came when they had happy hour. No food. We came because of the reviews on google were positive. We would agree that this place is a good place to relax for a beer or two. Prices for a pint in happy hour $7-8. Outside happy hour pint costs $8-10. The beers are two thumbs up. Stout was great alcohol content 4.5%. The aged cider 8.5% tasted fantastic. Service was on par as reviews claimed. Thumbs up.

Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in La Rochelle

To make the most of your evening out in this beautiful port city, it helps to understand the local customs and layout. La Rochelle is generally very safe, but the density of the old town means that the best venues fill up quickly, especially during the summer months and university term time. Here is how to navigate the scene like a seasoned regular.

Embrace the "Pression" Culture
While cocktail culture is booming, La Rochelle remains a beer town at heart. Look for the term pression (draft). Most bars will have a rotating selection of local and Belgian beers. Don’t hesitate to ask for a demi (half pint) if you want to sample several different brews without overdoing it. The local brewery, La Rochelle Bière, is always worth trying if you see it on tap.

Timing is Everything
The French schedule is different from many other countries. Bars typically open around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM, but the peak Happy Hour rush usually hits between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM. If you want a seat at the most popular terraces overlooking the port, arrive early. Conversely, if you prefer a livelier, standing-room-only atmosphere, join the crowd after 10:00 PM.

Explore the Rue de l’Escale
While the main port (Vieux Port) is beautiful, it is often the most expensive area to drink. For a more authentic and affordable experience, walk just a few minutes west to the Rue de l’Escale and the surrounding streets of the Saint-Nicolas district. This area is packed with smaller, characterful bars that cater to locals rather than tourists, offering better value and a more intimate vibe.

Understand the Terrace Tax
In France, it is common for the price of a coffee or a beer to differ depending on where you consume it. You will almost always pay a premium to sit on the terrace compared to standing or sitting at the bar (au comptoir). If you are on a budget, do as the locals do: buy your drink at the bar, stand for a while, and mingle. It is also the fastest way to get served.

Don’t Skip the Wine Bars
You are on the Atlantic coast, but you are also on the edge of some fantastic wine regions, including Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. Many bars in La Rochelle double as caves à vin (wine cellars). Ordering a glass of natural wine or a local Pineau des Charentes (a regional fortified wine) is a must. The staff in these establishments are usually passionate and happy to explain the origins of their bottles.

As the tide rolls out and the last of the fishing boats settle for the night, the lights of the old port shimmer on the water, creating a backdrop that is hard to match anywhere in France. The bar scene in La Rochelle is more than just a night out; it is an extension of the city’s maritime soul—welcoming, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the elements.

Whether you spent your evening in a centuries-old stone cellar sipping cognac or on a modern rooftop toasting with a spritz, you will leave with a sense of having participated in a long-standing local tradition. So pull up a stool, order something you have never tried before, and let the Atlantic breeze guide your evening.
