Finding a place to eat when you have children in tow can turn a simple meal into a strategic operation. In France, the dining culture is rich and leisurely, but not every brasserie or bistro is equipped to handle high chairs, spilled sippy cups, or the impatient hunger of a toddler. Fortunately, the city of Nantes has evolved into a remarkably welcoming destination for families, blending its historic charm with a modern, relaxed attitude toward dining.
Nantes, located on the Loire River in western France, is known for its vibrant arts scene, the mechanical wonders of Les Machines de l’île, and a green, eco-conscious spirit. This progressive mindset extends to its culinary landscape. Many restaurateurs here understand that parents deserve excellent food without having to compromise on atmosphere or comfort simply because they have kids.
Whether you are a local looking for a new weekend haunt or a visitor exploring the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, you will find a diverse range of options. From crêperies serving sweet and savory galettes to Italian trattorias and modern French kitchens, the city offers something for even the pickiest eater. The key is knowing which spots go the extra mile with dedicated kids’ menus, play corners, or simply a warm, patient staff.
This guide focuses on establishments that balance quality cuisine with genuine hospitality for younger guests. We have considered factors such as menu flexibility, availability of high chairs and changing facilities, noise levels, and proximity to family-friendly attractions. You shouldn’t have to settle for fast food just because you are traveling with little ones.
Below, you will find a curated list of the best family-friendly restaurants in Nantes. These are places where the food is taken seriously, but the atmosphere remains unpretentious. They are spaces where a dropped fork is met with a smile, and where the adults can enjoy a glass of Muscadet while the kids discover new flavors.

We liked the kid-friendliness and the generic concept of the place, but did not really feel welcomed as tourists there. The one waitress told us that we cannot stay for lunch, unless everyone from our company is eating something, since they need the place for "proper" families. The restaurant was still half empty as we left.
Joshua★★★★★
This restaurant is good for kids and families. The food was wonderful and there were play areas for infants and toddlers that are safe and have plenty toys to keep them occupied while you dine.

Excellent food, service and play area for children and babies...

My visits to "Les Gamines" are always a truly delightful experience! The food is excellent, and the children can play freely. The staff is always very welcoming and friendly. We come whenever we can!

I ordered the steak and the lamb shank; the steak was beautiful, no complaints there. And I was very surprised at the portion of the lamb shank, the amount of meat on it I believe would be cheaper per gram than buying a raw steak at a grocery store in Nantes. The service was great, incredibly fast. I was dining alone this day and my waiters made sure to converse with me about the food as they passed.
Only bad thing was that I was sitting outside and twice was approached by homeless begging for food.

Friday: Says open until 11pm online but kitchen closes at 9pm an employee told me.
We came back the next day Saturday night around 9:30pm and everything was awesome. Top quality food at a fair price. Service was efficient. Definitely recommend! The magrais de canard et la moelle était délicieux
Carole Wasson★★★★★
When you are traveling recommendations are very important when they are deserving, and Chez Franklin deserves all the praise. From the warm welcome, the great (Motown) music, and the very interesting menu, all high points. We were so lucky to have a chance to eat here, we would be regulars if we lived nearby!
Teresa Simpson★★★★☆
Nice place with friendly service. We enjoyed the food but it took a bit too long to arrive. Found ourselves rationing the wine so we'd have enough to drink with the main course.
Zena Braithwaite★★★★★
Thankyou to Chez Franklin for responding to my previous review which I have since deleted. This made me realise I had confused Chez Franklin with a restaurant we had attempted to eat at on the lunchtime - my apologies.
So yes we did eat here, it had been on my list of restaurants I had researched before our holiday with fish and vegetarian options.
Good menu, I had seabass ( the sauce in the little dish was stunning -see photo). From the photo I think my OH had mushroom risotto. We shared profiteroles for desert- excellent.

This restaurant we highly recommend! The food was excellent but the atmosphere is great. The entire place is filled with a combination of vintage, Lego, and funky objects everywhere!! The funniest is the bathrooms that are entered through a mirrored closet. The waiters were very nice and energetic! Lots of fun and good food!
Gareth Edwards★★★★★
Worth the queue before the restaurant opened. Extensive menu and numerous specials. My Brochette de Boeuf was very good. If you can get a seat outside it is a great place to see Les Nantaise and les touristes enjoying the evening. Great team of waiters - very helpful
Ivonig Corfmat★★★★★
A very special place as it's also a flea market. The dishes are classical French dishes very well prepared. Selection of wine is good and service was fast and very polite. It was very hot inside but not much can be done when it's a heat wave outside.
Emre K★★★☆☆
Tourist trap. This was the place one person in our group booked last minute on the single day we did not have a dinner reservation. Makes sense why they have tables. It’s so bad. The razor clams were the highlight (of how terrible the food can get). Just don’t go here. Worst food I had in France.
Phil Cook★★★★★
Had ear marked Chez Maman before visiting Nantes and it did not disappoint. An incredibly generous dish of beef bourguignon was ideal for this Sunday lunch: big chunks of beek cheeky (I think) were so moreish with plenty of sauce, little baby onions, carrots and a huge service of fries. My partner enjoyed an equally homely chicken main course. The cider we had was so delicious. I couldn't not order a classic creme brulee and it was just perfect. Sarah enjoyed a super rich chocolate fondant that was warm and so unctuous. Great little restaurant to watch the world go by with food at an appealing price point and very laid back, friendly service. One of our best meals in Nantes - highly recommend

The food is alright. The waiter doesn’t speak English and the menu is only in French. So I ordered a menu etudiant it is 12.5 euro( I saw the comment from other restaurants that they have lunch menu offering a drink, savory and sweet crepe for a good price) but the waiter did not confirm with me that is only for students and I need to present a student ID( or should I be flattered that I look like a student?). I only knew it when I paid, he charged me 17.2 euro by adding up every thing one by one . Just order one item or the restaurant should work on a English menu! Should have gone to other crepe restaurant….

The food was great and glutenfree gallete with buckwheat was very tasty! There might be cross contamination so do ask them to check on that. The waiter was a little but slow on the service considering the restaurant was nearly empty at the time in the afternoon.

The staff members provided exceptional customer service and were attentive to our table. The food was of good quality but some of the steak could have been cooked a little more and have condiments on the table. Overall we enjoyed this and would visit again.

Amazing food, the raclette is really good, and the portions are big! Better if you are hungry!

The six of us a great meal! Excellent and friendly service. Loved the additional gratis potatoes which came with the Raclette option. Can really recommend this place.

The staff was very nice and there were vegetarian options. We didn't realize my friends chicken would come uncooked though, this was a bit surprising. Overall a nice place!

They dont have menu in english so its hard and takes time to translate it. Food was okay, but not exceptional. Fries were unseasond, while taste was okay. Beef was maybe too raw for our liking. Burger was solid. We were not blown away, but it was ok.

Not as expected: started was cold; main, courgette with meat (here a stew?) was with a sweet brown sauce... (mashed potatoes excellent); desert not the right way (dame blanche is with warm chocolate and the chocolate on top).
Very large choice of wines by the glass.

Very nice and friendly service. It was a little on the slower side, but we didn’t mind at all since we weren’t in a hurry. The food was really good - a bit heavy afterwards, but that’s simply the nature of this type of cuisine. Prices were reasonable. Definitely recommended!
One thing I really appreciated was that the menu includes photos of the dishes, which is very helpful if you’re not exactly sure what to expect.
It’s just a shame we didn’t have room for dessert because they looked amazing.

I have been coming here for months now, and it's really a good place. The staff is amazing, the food is delicious. You can sit outside too. I can guarantee you that the hot chocolate is vegan if you ask, and the lemon cake is also vegan. As you can see on the picture I only came for snack.
Fernando Saldaña★★★☆☆
The restaurant is very popular so without reservation is almost impossible to get a table. I tried to eat there without reservation and they were unable to tell me the approximate waiting time neither the number of people before me. After we finally got the table the food arrived very late. Although the presentation of the food was very nice the flavor can improve

Beautiful little cafe, right on the river. Service is very warm and friendly. Delicious brunch/breakfast and lunch food. Lots of shady space outside and baby seats. Excellent baby change facilities ( they even stock a few nappies/wipes etc in case they are needed). GREAT coffee!! We had a lovely lunch here/ highly recommended.

We decided to give it a try based on good reviews and photos. It was raining cats and dogs so we were very happy to get a table inside especially as there is a great atmosphere inside. It's a bit like eating in a museum.
We ordered a regular size Croque Monsieur each and an Anchovie Salad to share. Both were very tasty. We also shared a Rhubarb crumble which again was first rate.
We had a 35c of draft Merlot, which added to the overall enjoyment.

It’s a relaxed restaurant with friendly staff and good food. We ordered many plates to share and all of them were tasty. Great value for money!

Very nice setting. Beautiful interior.
Good, not great, food. Service is friendly but disappears when the restaurant fills with diners; wine refills needed a visit to the bar or an infinite wait otherwise.
Not bad overall but once is enough.

A great moment for gourmets looking for an oasis-type break in the heart of the city. Glass ceiling, green surroundings and comfy setup. This is my third time in 2 years: the cocktails are still amazing and the dishes finger-licking!. A nice culinary experience with a young team striving for perfection: the dishes are well prepared, so tasty and fresh, in balanced proportions, and even better than last time. Great job, Keep it up! We will be back. 👏

Great food, specials and wine selection. Served with style and carved at your table. Starter portions are large- the buratta and foccaccia are amazing. Mains were great- the steaks are generally less done so be careful what you ask for. Desserts are also amazing- the mint balnc will be showered with chocolate paste at your table. Worth a visit in Nantes.

I was in nantes for a week and visited this place alone on a recommendation from a colleague.
I really liked the place , the vibe was top notch. It was very busy but i was lucky to get a table without reservation Ofcourse i was alone.
I tried the guacamole, which was awesome and it really suited my indian taste buds. For drinks i just tried Gimber and the salted crisps they provided with it were awesome.
For mains i went with shrimps and basmati rice, shrimps were small but flavorful a too much of tomato tangy ness for me. I was full so no space for desserts but they all looked very tasty on other tables.
I am a big fan of french bakery and the breads they provided were too good. I must recommend this place to anyone who visits nantes.
Bon appetite

Inviting restaurant with a jungle decor. Friendly staff. Burratta entrée was delicious followed by a perfectly cooked steak. We also split the vegetarian eggplant and some other dishes, whish were good but missing a little flavor.
Tips for Dining Out with Kids in Nantes
Navigating the French dining scene with children is easier when you understand the local rhythms and unwritten rules. While the restaurants listed above are exceptionally welcoming, a little preparation can make your meal even more enjoyable. Here are some practical strategies to ensure a stress-free experience for the whole family.
Time your visit strategically. French restaurants typically serve lunch from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and dinner from 7:30 PM onwards. Arriving right when the restaurant opens, especially for dinner, is often the best way to secure a table and receive faster service before the kitchen gets busy. It also means you are finishing your meal as the local crowd is just arriving.
Embrace the "Menu Enfant." Many of the restaurants on this list offer a fixed-price children’s menu, usually including a main course, a drink, and a dessert. While these menus often feature classics like steak haché (ground beef patty) or pasta, don’t be afraid to ask if the kitchen can prepare a half-portion of an adult dish. Most chefs in family-friendly establishments are happy to accommodate simple requests.
Look for pedestrian-friendly zones. Nantes is a highly walkable city, and many of the best family restaurants are located in areas closed to traffic, such as the Bouffay district or along the Erdre riverbanks. Choosing a restaurant with a nearby square or pedestrian street allows children to stretch their legs or burn off energy before or after the meal without the stress of busy roads.
Bring quiet entertainment. While some venues offer coloring sheets, it is wise to pack a small bag with a book, crayons, or a silent toy. French dining is generally slower paced than in some other countries, and having a quiet activity helps bridge the gap between courses without relying on a tablet with loud volume, which can disturb other diners.
Check for outdoor terraces. Nantes enjoys a mild climate for much of the year, and dining al fresco is a favorite local pastime. A terrace table provides a bit of a buffer for noise, offers more space for strollers, and gives kids a view of the street life. Always ask for a "table en terrasse" when the weather permits.
Dining out with your family in Nantes offers a chance to slow down and enjoy the city’s unique blend of Breton tradition and contemporary flair. The restaurants featured here prove that you do not have to sacrifice culinary ambition for the sake of a family meal. By choosing the right spot and planning your timing, you can create wonderful memories around the table that rival the attractions themselves.
As you explore the city, let the local pace guide you. Allow time for a leisurely stroll along the Loire after lunch or a visit to a nearby park before dinner. Nantes is a city that invites you to linger, and with these family-friendly dining options, you can do so comfortably with every member of your family in tow.
