15 Tourist Attractions in Nantes

Nantes is a city that rarely sits still. Once a major industrial port on the Loire River, it has transformed into one of France’s most inventive and culturally rich destinations. The historic capital of the Dukes of Brittany balances stately stone architecture with contemporary art installations, making it a compelling stop for travelers who want more than a postcard version of France.

Visitors often arrive expecting a quiet provincial town, only to find a bustling metropolis with a vibrant student population and a thriving creative scene. The city’s layout encourages wandering, from the narrow medieval lanes of the Bouffay district to the reclaimed industrial spaces on the Île de Nantes. It is a place where a centuries-old castle can share the skyline with a giant mechanical elephant.

One of the most striking aspects of Nantes is its commitment to public art and accessible culture. The famous Voyage à Nantes trail turns the entire city into an open-air gallery each summer, leaving permanent works scattered across streets, parks, and riverbanks. Even outside festival season, green spaces, design-forward architecture, and unexpected sculptures reward curious walkers at almost every turn.

For food lovers, Nantes offers a distinct culinary identity shaped by the nearby Atlantic and the Loire Valley’s agricultural wealth. Buttery sablé biscuits, salted caramel, Muscadet wine, and fresh seafood from the coast are all local staples. The city’s covered markets and waterfront brasseries provide an easy introduction to the region’s flavors without the formality of fine dining.

Navigating Nantes is refreshingly simple. A modern tram network connects the central neighborhoods, while the city center remains compact enough to explore on foot. The airport is a short shuttle ride from the train station, and high-speed TGV trains link Nantes to Paris in just over two hours, making it a practical addition to any French itinerary.

Whether you are traveling with children, planning a romantic weekend, or researching a longer cultural tour, Nantes rewards a slower pace. The best visits combine a few major landmarks with time spent simply sitting by the river, browsing independent bookshops, or following a cobbled street without a map. Below is a curated list of the city’s most memorable attractions.

Initially as I was walking up to Chateau des ducs de Bretagne, it stroke my attention. I was very impressed with the magnitude of the castle. I thought it was extremely beautiful. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to explore the full depth of the castle or the museum on the inside, due to shortage in time. However, I definitely hope to come back to view the rest of the Chateau at some point in the future. It’s definitely worth the visit.
Charlotte Barrett★★★★★
This is a beautiful castle with lots to see in the museum (not everything has translations though so note that if you don't speak French you may miss out a bit). There are lovely interactive exhibits that the kids loved, even though they couldn't understand French. The staff were lovely and friendly, the chateau itself is beautiful and you could easily spend a whole day there. The grounds surrounding it are very pretty too. We really enjoyed it, and were pleasantly surprised that the kids were free, even our 12 year old. Well worth a visit.
Jed Morgan★★★★★
We visited the chateau as part of a short one day visit to Nantes. We didn’t book a tour but really enjoyed freely accessing the walk on the ramparts with great photo opportunities. The history of the chateau is very interesting too
David Hunt★★★★★
Loved that you can walk the walls and surrounding gardens. The museum inside the main chateau tells a good story of Nantes. The sections on colonialism, slavery and world war are well put together and thought provoking.
Akira★★★★★
Beautiful historical site and a must-visit in Nantes. The château is impressive, full of history, and the atmosphere is amazing. Even though it was raining when I went, it was still absolutely worth it. Walking around the castle walls and seeing the architecture in that weather made it even more memorable. Highly recommended!

Adam Glover★★★★★
A brilliant unique experience, mixing steam punk, the natural world, engineering and theatre. We visited the gallerie, the workshop and the carousel, watching the Grand Elephant from the ground and the balcony. Entry to the paid attractions isn't the cheapest but can see the scale of effort and creativity that goes into such large projects. Watching the elephant traverse the area would be a budget friendly option and still amazing. The gallerie has a lovely flowing style where they "wake the creatures up" one by one in an ongoing loop allowing you to join and leave seamlessly. The presentations are in French although they do an English round on a Monday I believe. There is also a downloadable multilingual guide. Even if you are not fluent, it doesn't really detract from the theatre and spectacle however.
Silke De Rouck★★★★★
Fun experience. You get to be at the controls of some of these beautiful machines. They showcase how each one functions. The carroussel is lots of run for all ages as well! Highly recommend booking beforehand if you want to go on the elephant ride. Otherwise arriving at any time is fine. Included in the pass Nantes.
John Webb★★★★☆
The Grand Elephant is the star of the show for me. Wandering around the park spraying kids with water....and that part is free! We paid to visit the Carousel de Marins and the main gallery. Both very interesting. Didn't get to the workshop. You can easily spend a few hours here to see some unique creations. Well worth it.
David Hunt★★★★★
Interesting, immersive. Well organised. We went from tour to tour, while the elephant ride is impressive it is even more so when seen from ground level. We spent about 3 hours here and were quite satisfied.
Pritesh Rana★★★★★
Great entertainment for kids on a hot sunny day. We didn't ride the Giant Elephant but instead walked along with it whilst it sprayed water at kids, adults and passerby's. Was very entertaining and refreshing on a hot sunny day. Highly recommend. Best of all there is a little ice cream shop at the halfway point where you can stop for a break before continuing the return spray adventure. 🫶🏼 Would recommend checking timings for walk so you're not waiting around too long.

Literally one minutes from the Gare SNCF, and entry is completely free. Seven hectares of beautiful landscaping. Towering magnolias, sequoias, ponds, greenhouses with tropical plants, and quirky touches like animal-shaped bushes and benches that scale from tiny to giant. Grabbed a drink at the Café de l'Orangerie and watched locals soaking it up. Peaceful, well‑kept, and charming. It gets busy, so go early for quiet. Picnics are restricted to one small grassy area at the back. Well worth a wander, even if you're just passing through Nantes.
Srujan B Channabasappa★★★★★
I really enjoyed walking around the Jardin des Plantes. It is spacious, beautifully maintained and has an amazing variety of plants, flowers and trees. What I loved most is how peaceful it feels despite being right in the middle of the city. The combination of greenery, beautiful pathways, artistic installations and the historic greenhouses makes the garden really special. There are plenty of quiet corners where you can simply sit, relax and enjoy nature. A perfect place for a peaceful walk, photography, or just taking a break from the city. Definitely one of the places I would recommend visiting in Nantes.
Urs Steinberger★★★★★
Stunningly beautiful, free entrance, perfect opportunity to spend your time if you have 1-2h to switch trains. It's a bit cooler inside the park than outside and the nature is quite beautiful. Especially the many birds were really likeable. Wouldn't know any reason not to go here.
Jeanie Everson★★★★★
What a delightful place! You can walk around, through and sit for a while. So many beautiful plants and areas to relax and enjoy. The various silly art pieces are terrific! This place could be twice the size given all the people enjoying it.
Michael “The Zen Guy” Huffman★★★★★
Super nice garden. It's bigger than the one in Angers. A lot of people with luggage since the train station is right across the street.

It’s a nice amenity on a hot day while visiting the chateau
Paul Cruwys★★★★★
Great place for the kids. Especially when exploring the city this breaks up the trio and allow them to be free, especially cool down on the hot day. The water empties and refills automatically which is great. There are some jets that also come on where the kids can walk through. Loads of people here under the shade of the trees and an ice cream truck also serving ice creams.
Anders Mariegaard★★★★★
Really cool place during the day where the large area of water acts as a mirror in which the castle is reflected. At night, the fountain displays all kinds of beautiful combinations of colors and patterns. A must see when in Nantes!
Beth★★★★☆
Pretty, although the fountains were only on the first time we saw it.

Fun. Amazing. I would appreciate if the guides gave some information in English. There were more English visitors than French, but only safety info was given in English
Peta Buckley★★★★★
Fun for everyone - big & small! Great day - loved it! A must see for visitors to Nantes.
Roelof K. (РУЛИК)★★★★★
Nice place. You need to pay extra for the carrousel if you visited the machines. Staff is very friendly. Even when we where the last group if the day. They gave some extra attention to non French speaking. We did 3 free rides! Become a child and enjoy the ride!
Dragon best4★★★★☆
Everyone gets to pilot their own machine with unique little mechanisms, and they're all well-designed with a consistent aesthetic. There is much room for further detailing in parts of the carousel, but on the other hand, for such an attraction, wait times were fairly short, even on a Saturday.
Anne-Marie Cockfield★★☆☆☆
€24 for 2x adults with young child who is too small to ride the middle level. The top level was broken down completely and bottom level only half capacity operating, with a huge queue we did not have time to join. Sadly beyond lovely machinery, expensive and not worthwhile visit for us- no refund offered.

What an amazing and original place. The carrousel is also great to visit. My adventurous and quite demanding 7- and 9-year old sons even said that the carrousel ride was one of the most fun things they ever did!

We really enjoyed our visit to Les Machines de l’Île! It is a beautiful, fascinating and very well-designed experience. The installations are impressive and the demonstrations are very well done. All the staff and operators were extremely helpful, professional, friendly and enthusiastic, which made the visit even more enjoyable. We definitely recommend it as a family activity, especially with children. The only small downside is that children cannot actually try the machines unless they are chosen as volunteers — usually only two children are selected for each demonstration. This can be a little disappointing for the others. We would also have loved to take a ride on the famous elephant, but unfortunately everything was sold out and we weren’t able to fit it into our day. We also didn’t get to try the Carrousel des Mondes Marins, which is another attraction within Les Machines. The main negative point for us was the price, which is really very high. We completely understand that maintaining these incredible machines must be expensive, but the overall cost is still very high, especially for a family. Despite this, it is a unique, fascinating and memorable experience, and we would definitely recommend visiting Les Machines de l’Île, especially if you are travelling with children!

Oscar Hermansson★★★★★
Le Grand Éléphant is one of those attractions that sounds a little unusual when someone describes it—but somehow turns out to be even better in real life. Watching a 12-meter-tall mechanical elephant, built from wood and steel, slowly walk through Nantes while moving its trunk, ears, eyes, and even spraying water at unsuspecting spectators is both impressive engineering and great fun. It’s impossible not to smile. Our whole family enjoyed it. The children were fascinated by the mechanics, while the adults couldn’t help wondering how someone first pitched the idea of building a giant walking elephant—and, more importantly, convinced everyone else it was a good idea. As a bit of a science fiction fan, I particularly appreciated the clear steampunk inspiration. The exposed gears, pistons, and ingenious mechanical details make it feel as though something from a Jules Verne novel has come to life. Given that Nantes was Jules Verne’s birthplace, that connection makes the attraction even more fitting. If you have the opportunity, it’s well worth buying a ticket to ride on the elephant. Seeing the city from its back while it slowly makes its way through the former shipyards is a memorable experience. Le Grand Éléphant is quirky, imaginative, and uniquely French in the best possible way. It perfectly captures Nantes’ ability to combine engineering, creativity, history, and a healthy sense of humor. Definitely one of the city’s must-see attractions.
Sonja Olaussen★★★★☆
Awesome beast, reaching terrifying speed 1 or 2 km/h. It's more fun to see it from the ground, the 30-min-long tour goes really slowly. But the elephant is very high, views from it are amazing
Ronald Sealey★★★★★
I took my 2 grandsons here, 16 and 17. For over an hour they put their mobile devices aside and marveled at what could be done with a different technology. Fascinating designs and interactive exhibits make this place a must see.
Sena BU★★★★☆
Very interesting thing to do. Who thought to create something like that, I don’t know but it is entertaining to see it. It is free. The elephant walks and you can watch it.
icsandy2★★★★★
Riding the elephant is a lot fun. Kids enjoyed following the elephant ‘walking’ around the site getting sprayed with water from the tusk even more!

This Cháteau is beautiful even if you do not get inside. You can walk around it and even go down to the castle moat.
Myriam M★★★★☆
The gardens, courtyard and ramparts of the castle can be visited for free. You only pay to go to the museum inside the castle. Climbing the stairs to the ramparts gives you a beautiful view of the city and the seating inside the courtyard invites for a quick break from sightseeing.
Ahmad Azlan Sairi★★★★★
Fun place to be to spend 1-2 hours in. The ramparts are free and gives a nice view of Nantes skyline
Alexandre Ott (Othli)★★★★☆
You have to walk around the castle to find an entrance, but this is a nice place to settle for a picnic. Not much shadow except for the shadow of the castle itself, so depending on where you are located, I hope you like the sun
MissSJ★★★★★
It is unusual for me to see the château surrounded with moat. In my impression, I have not seen many moated castles so I appreciate seeing one in Nantes as it was so rare. I also learnt from there that the purpose of the moat was to defend against attack.

Great way to discover Nantes. You can put your stoller in the back of the train. However they do not accept debit card, so you must have cash with you. It was full on a Tuesday at 14h

Unfortunately not possible to give no star. You sit in diesel exhaust, can't breathe and it stinks like hell. Don't know if we passes some points of interest, was coughing all the time and jumped off once the tractor became slow. Terrible experience!!!

Went on new year's eve when it was closed. Looks like an interesting place to do a tour during normal opening hours. It is included in Nantes pass.
John Baker★★★☆☆
I was expecting more of a connection with the old biscuit factory, perhaps more history with and associated shop. If you're expecting this this, then don't go. The exhibition in the tower talks about how Lefèvre-Utile became Lieu unique. As for Lieu unique itself, it's an arts centre in an ex-factory. it does have a good second-hand vinyl store though!
Lourdes Pereira★☆☆☆☆
What a disappointment! Outside is beautiful but don't bother paying to go up. Dirty windows and no view whatsoever. What a pity the responsible entities don't make the interior of the tower worth the visit.
Nélson Silva★☆☆☆☆
Biggest deception ever. It's a shame that someone decides to make people pay to climb a few stairs and see NOTHING. Only some illustrations on the walls, not even possible to climb to the top of the tower. It is pretty to watch from the outside, that's it.
Busy Bee★★★★☆
Lovely lunch in iconic building opposite Chateau. Arrived when it opened & no queue but quickly filled up. Disappointing toilets though!

The fountain is at the centre of one of the squares. Fountain itself is relatively clean and the steps make comfortable seating. Nice restaurants and cafes surrounding. Close proximity to the church which is great to view! The area, definitely watch your belongings, a few men seemed to follow me after I took cash out of one of the ATMs one of the nights, until I rejoined my group. Hopefully innocent but something to note.

I'm not a big fan of art but this fountain is super cool. Recently they replaced the old statues with new modern one representative of modern jobs. I found this amazing and give it a solid 4/5. If it's on the way it's a must see.

Nymphéa is an artistic representation that captures the image of a woman's face reflected in moving water. With each movement of the water, the face transforms, creating a play of light and shadow. Of course, you should visit it at night. I had personally heard a lot about this monument and expected something truly impressive, but the image reflected in the moving water, which was supposed to be the main attraction, lacked visual impact. I was a little disappointed.
Alexis Meriau★☆☆☆☆
I studied computer science, so I found it pointless, especially since I went at 2 PM and, as it's only visible at night, I didn't see anything. So I called a friend who studied art, and she confirmed that it was rubbish.

Beautiful Basilique of Saint-Nicholas. Historical place! I will recommend visiting this place .

This church is an architectural gem and a must-visit for anyone interested in Gothic religious architecture. The exterior columns of the spires seem to float, creating a stunning visual effect. Inside, the church is very quiet and well-maintained, providing a peaceful atmosphere for reflection. There are plenty of seats throughout, making it easy to sit and take in the beauty. Visitors can also light candles, adding to the serene and contemplative environment. Overall, it’s a beautiful and tranquil place, well worth a visit.

Tips for Visiting Nantes

Getting the most out of Nantes often comes down to timing and local knowledge. The city is walkable, but a few practical strategies can help you avoid crowds, save money, and experience the city more like a resident than a tourist.

Book the Machines of the Isle of Nantes in advance, especially for the Grand Éléphant rides, which sell out quickly on weekends and during school holidays. Consider visiting the Machines first thing in the morning to see the mechanical creatures waking up without the midday rush.

Use the Voyage à Nantes green line as your starting point. This painted trail connects dozens of major sites and hidden artworks across the city center. Following it for even an hour will lead you to corners of Nantes you would likely miss otherwise.

Take advantage of the free first Sunday at the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and the Musée d’Arts de Nantes. If your visit does not align with that date, check whether you qualify for reduced entry, as many museums offer discounts for students, teachers, and job seekers.

Buy a day pass for the tram and bus network if you plan to visit the Jardin des Plantes, the Machines, and the Quartier de la Création in one day. A single ticket is valid for one hour, but a 24-hour pass quickly pays for itself and removes the stress of validating every connection.

Pack for changeable weather. Nantes sits close to the Atlantic, so light rain and sudden sun breaks are common even in summer. A compact umbrella and comfortable waterproof shoes will serve you better than a heavy coat.

The city empties out in August, when many locals head to the coast. While some smaller restaurants and boutiques close for the month, the major attractions remain open, and the quieter streets can feel more intimate. If you prefer a livelier atmosphere, visit in May, June, or September.

Nantes leaves a lasting impression because it refuses to be easily categorized. It is historic but forward-looking, industrial but green, proudly Breton in spirit yet entirely its own. The city invites you to slow down, look up, and follow your curiosity rather than a rigid checklist.

From the medieval castle ramparts to the banks of the Loire, every district offers a different rhythm. Whether you come for the art, the food, or the mechanical marvels, you will likely leave with a list of places you still want to see. That, perhaps, is the clearest sign of a city doing something right.
