Finding a great pizza in a historic Provenรงal town might not seem like the most obvious culinary quest, but Arles has quietly cultivated a vibrant and competitive pizza scene. While the city is world-renowned for its Roman ruins and Van Goghโs vibrant landscapes, the modern dining culture has evolved to embrace the comfort and craftsmanship of excellent Italian food. Whether you are a local looking for a new weekly staple or a traveler needing a break from traditional French bistro fare, Arles has a pie for you.
The local pizzerias range from cozy, family-run establishments that have served the community for decades to trendy, contemporary spots experimenting with organic flour and wood-fired ovens. The proximity to the Camargue region also means that access to high-quality produce, fresh herbs, and artisanal cheeses is exceptional. This agricultural richness translates directly into toppings that are fresh, vibrant, and distinctly Mediterranean.
When searching for the perfect slice in this ancient city, you will notice a distinct preference for quality over quantity. Many chefs here prioritize slow-fermented dough that is light and digestible, paired with San Marzano tomatoes and Fior di Latte. While you can certainly find the classic Margherita, the best spots often feature local twists, such as goat cheese, tapenade, and fresh anchovies from the nearby coast.
Navigating the narrow, winding streets of the old town to find these gems is part of the experience. Many of the top-rated spots are tucked away in quiet squares or bustling pedestrian zones, offering the perfect atmosphere for a long, leisurely dinner under the Provenรงal sky. The blend of Italian tradition with French "art de vivre" creates a dining experience that is uniquely Arlesian.
To help you cut through the noise and avoid tourist traps, we have compiled a list of the most reliable and beloved pizzerias in the area. We have considered dough quality, ingredient sourcing, atmosphere, and consistency of service to bring you a curated guide. Whether you prefer a crispy Roman-style base or a soft, fluffy Neapolitan crust, you will find an option that satisfies your craving.
Without further ado, here are the spots that locals swear by and visitors rave about.

Wonderful casual Italian restaurant in Arles. The beef lasagna was delicious; we almost ordered a second even though we were so full. The side salad was very fresh. The bufala pizza was also divine, and the chef picked the basil fresh as he made it. If youโre craving a hearty, delicious meal in Arles, you canโt go wrong here.

We ate at this restaurant after passing it on the way to the Colosseum. It was absolutely fantastic - I highly recommend the carbonara pinsa!! Simply delicious and the best carbonara Iโve ever had. Service was very friendly, food came relatively quickly, and we felt very welcome. You should definitely come to this restaurant if youโre ever in Arles! ๐คฉ

After a couple of wrong turns, we ended up, almost accidentally at this restaurant. What a wonderful mistake! The amazing location is second best when it comes to the food and service. Our pizzas were truly some of the best we have eaten. A fantastic mix of crispy and doughy. All to do with their special flour blend apparently. The carbonara pinsa sounds like a terrible idea, but was DELICIOUS! The staff could not have been more helpful.
If in Arles and youโre a fan of pizza, go here. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

We were looking for a pizzeria for 2 adults and 4 kids. Not an easy task to start with!
We ended up finding Pizzeria La Mamma in the heart of Arles, very close to the amphitheater.
The staff that attended our table was extremely friendly and patient with the kids.
There was a kids menu which was perfect for the kids (pastas or pizza for main and ice cream or panna cotta for dessert).
The rest of the menu is extremely complete and will satisfy all tastes. The pizza we ordered were perfect is size and taste. For desert we ordered tiramisu and panna cotta and they were also very good.
The wine menu is not extremely extensive but fits different needs (white, rouge, rose and for all sizes).

In May 2018 I came to visit Arles , I will never forget MOMO from "Arles pizza". He is the best in this part of town!! Located off a little square Place Doumer (place) in the Roquette quartier of Arles (most picturesque)I was walking by and decided to try one of his creme fraiche tartiflette pizza minus the potatoes. All baked in wood oven fire, with passion and Love. Mine came perfect with a thin crispy crunchy crust, with a woody smoky flavor, and all natural products on top, real cheese, lardons ( speck, pancetta), it was a delight to the eye and to my taste buds with the creme fraiche melting them, I was in Arles savoring a pizza made in heaven!!!.
What else could be better? Momo is a great guy, very accommodating, within reasonable limits, with a huge broad smile and a passion for his trade. You can eat outside and he will bring you the pizza himself if and when not too busy. *****

Pizza is good but not amazing. Huge choice of toppings and very good prices.
They did not set the table with cutlery, had to ask for it. Knives they gave us were pizza cutters not really bfor eating.
Place take cash only, does not serve alcohol. If u ask the owner, he can allow BYOB or to get drinks from next door.
Server we had was completely clued out on all fronts.
Amazing location, the owner needs to get his act together and up his game to make it as popular as pizza 22. Definite potential. Very popular bfor takeaway

We had a great meal here...nothing fancy just a home made lasagne plat du jour , it was delicious the service was great and very friendly.. you are virtually on the site of the yellow house where van Gogh lived (sadly bombed during the war)
Just a few metres away is the exact position where van Gogh's painted a picture of the house marked by a reproduction on a sign
Be sure to order a picon beer here and watch the day go by..also van Gogh painted the starrie night on the rhone just a hundred yards away on the river bank also marked by a sign
The brasserie france is just outside the old gate to the town and the prices are good

Tips for Enjoying Pizza in Arles
To truly make the most of your culinary adventure in this Provenรงal town, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The dining rhythm and customs in Arles can differ slightly from the bustling pizzerias of Paris or the tourist-heavy French Riviera. Understanding when to book, what to order, and how the locals eat will elevate your experience from a simple meal to a memorable part of your trip.
- Book Ahead for Dinner: Arles is a popular destination, especially during the Rencontres dโArles photography festival in the summer. The best pizzerias fill up quickly with both locals and tourists. A reservation is essential if you want to secure a table on a terrace between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM.
- Embrace the Local Wine: While Italian wine is tempting, many pizzerias in Arles boast excellent lists featuring local Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence or Les Baux-de-Provence wines. A chilled local rosรฉ pairs surprisingly well with a charcuterie-topped pizza or a simple Margherita.
- Ask About the "Pรขte": The best chefs in Arles are proud of their dough. Don’t be shy to ask if it is made in-house and how long it has been fermented. A great pizzeria will happily tell you about their 48-hour or 72-hour levain process, which ensures the crust is light and easy to digest.
- Check for Wood-Fired Ovens: While electric ovens can produce decent results, the smoky char from a genuine wood-fired oven (four ร bois) is the hallmark of an authentic pie. Look for menus or signs that specifically mention "cuisson au feu de bois" for that signature blistered crust.
- Respect the Service Hours: Unlike some major cities where you can eat pizza at 6:00 PM, many kitchens in Arles do not open for dinner service until 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM. Plan your day accordingly; perhaps enjoy an aperitif in the Place du Forum while you wait for the ovens to heat up.
The pizza landscape in Arles proves that you don’t have to be in Italy to experience world-class dough and toppings. The fusion of Italian technique with the fresh, sun-drenched ingredients of Provence creates a flavor profile that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. It is a testament to the cityโs ability to honor tradition while embracing global culinary trends.
As you wander back through the ancient stone streets after your meal, full of cheese and perfectly leavened bread, you will likely find yourself planning your next visit. Whether you are a strict traditionalist or an adventurous eater looking for a pie topped with local goat cheese and honey, Arles offers a slice of comfort that perfectly complements its historic beauty.
