Nestled in the heart of Provence, Arles is a city where Roman history, Van Gogh’s artistic legacy, and vibrant Camargue culture collide. While most visitors arrive for the ancient amphitheater or the sun-drenched landscapes, many are surprised to discover that this historic commune also boasts a surprisingly dynamic dining scene. Given its proximity to the Mediterranean and the fertile Rhône delta, it is no wonder that seafood plays a starring role in local gastronomy.
Finding a great sushi spot in a town famous for bull stew and ratatouille might seem like a challenge, but Arles has quietly embraced the art of Japanese cuisine. Over the years, a wave of skilled chefs has introduced the city to the delicate balance of vinegared rice, fresh fish, and umami-rich soy. Whether you are a local looking for a weekly treat or a traveler craving something beyond traditional French fare, the options are more varied than you might expect.
The beauty of enjoying sushi in Arles is the blend of Provençal ingredients with Japanese technique. Many of the top establishments here prioritize freshness, often sourcing produce from local markets and fish from the nearby coasts. This fusion of Mediterranean sourcing and Asian precision results in plates that are both visually stunning and deeply satisfying.
However, not all sushi is created equal. With the rise in popularity of Japanese food, the market has seen an influx of "grab-and-go" spots that prioritize speed over substance. To help you navigate the scene, we have focused on venues that excel in rice texture, fish quality, and overall dining atmosphere. From cozy family-run counters to sleek modern lounges, there is a spot for every palate and budget.
In this guide, we have curated a list of the best sushi spots in Arles based on ingredient freshness, consistency, service, and value for money. We understand that cravings vary—some days you want a traditional nigiri set, while other days you might be looking for a creative fusion roll. Our selection accounts for these different needs, ensuring you find exactly what you are looking for.
Prepare to embark on a culinary journey that bridges the Far East and the South of France. Whether you are dining in or taking away to enjoy by the Rhône river, these restaurants represent the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine in this ancient Roman city.

Great place when you want to stop for some sushi when travelling, service was great and food perfect!
Sophie Wilson★☆☆☆☆
Ordered takeaway. Prawn noodles and chicken noodles. It was alright. Quite greasy and bland. The chicken noodles had veg in but the prawn noodles came with an odd pepper or two. Ordered two bottles of asahi larger with it and didn't realise until back at the hotel that they weren't in the bag. So pretty bad service all round. Thought we'd give it another go only to find that they were closed 45 minutes before closing time. Ahh well won't waste money there again.

Nice quiet place to have some good sushi/chirashi bowl. The dessert was great too (they have a special for arles) and the yakitori was also well done.

Clean place, fast service, the staff was very nice. I would definitely recomment this place. The teriyaki chicken topping was insanely good and the noodles and the bubble tea were also yummy.
Mind that there's not toilet in this restauran.

Romy Speer Lapointe★★★★☆
We took the lunch menu (22€ for 3 meal set). The gyozas were very good, with homemade dough and everything. There were many options like chicken curry, veggies and pork. The ramen (Sapporo style in the picture) were tasty, but the toppings were lukewarm. They had many desserts, we took the ice cream mochi, with a succulent sorbet inside. The staff were nice, though a bit pushy to get our orders at first. Overall, great place, given the limited resources for Asian cuisine they have in France.
Berto Salgado★★★★★
The food was delicious and flavorful. Got the Hakata Ramen and the broth was so tasty.
They had a special going on for lunch when we went and it was €22 to get four pieces of gyoza, mochi, and your choice of ramen.

Post edit after owner reaction:
YES, I am a real customer and YES I visited your restaurant in July. I came with 2 friends for lunch in an empty restaurant. We had to wait for the waitress to finish whatever she was doing to be waited. And she was making a face to show us we were far to be her priority. Then, we constantly had to hail her to get her attention to get our order. The ramen was bland, tasteless and I had stomach pain in the afternoon so if you are sick of "fake" reviews, well I was sick by food poisoning so instead of constantly pointing your fingers towards unhappy customers maybe you should introspect and realise hospitality business might not be for you. There are definitely better options for Japanese food in Arles where food is authentic and where you feel welcomed.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Not a big fan of their ramen. One of the worst i ever had to be honest... and the service was cold and unpersonal. On top of that, I was sick after eating there...

Stamina ramen had great taste (better than many ramen we had while living in Japan !).
Both pork and vegetable soups were rich of umami taste. It’s such a perfect dish for winter !

Highly recommended!!!! We live in the area and are often desperate for something a bit different to eat. The ramen here is better than many places I’ve been to in NYC, London and even Tokyo! I usually get the Hakata Ramen. Definitely go to Izakayan, you won’t be disappointed

Ramen
We visited this restaurant on the recommendation of our apartment host and from a local lady we met in Arles. This is a good option for ramen. It's not totally authentic - but it's still very good. We weren't keen on the yakisoba - the sauce tasted quite strange to my fussy Asian palate.

After being treated so bad by the staff at IZAKAYAN by WA-FOU……we wandered into this place and it was perfect!!
This has to be some of the best ramen and handmade pot stickers we have ever had. Great little corner with amazing customer service! Service was quick, atmosphere was relaxed and fun, and we watched a ton of Togo delivers go out so we knew it was going to be good from the start!

I really enjoyed Soyu Ramen with the firm noodles which was very authentic Japanese style ramen. Gyoza was such a well cooked and very enjoyable.

The vegan ramen was very delicious; excellent broth, noodles, and toppings. Added an egg for protein and started the meal with their stewed aubergine special of the day.
So happy we found this spot! A vegetarian's dream in Arles. Highly recommendable.
Update: we went back a second time the next day for the soy mean Katsudon and the Vegan Yakisoba. Delicious as well! If you can't take another avocado toast, this is the place to eat.

Delicious authentic fresh Japanese food. The restaurant was extremely clean and the decor was fitting combing Japanese/French perfectly. Lovely spot on a little side street in the center of town- the place offers a variety of sandwiches and sushi (which we didn't try). I got Le Richard, which had jamon, avocado, mozzarella and black olives with olive oil on a crispy baguette - simply delicious. The husband got an oh-canada, which had capers and salmon, which he also enjoyed. Very few outdoor tables, but very easy to grab and go to a local spot. A real gem, highly recommend!

We are eating Japanese food every week so our analysis is based on facts :
- Starters and main dish were served at the same time without any warning. So your food gets cold by the time you finish your entrée.
- Sushi tasted decent but exactly the same quality you find at your local grocery store
- Ramen were bland, just boring to eat and pasta & veggies overcooked

Essential Tips for Choosing Great Sushi in Arles
To truly enjoy the best sushi experience in Arles, it helps to know what separates a mediocre meal from a memorable one. The local dining culture here has its own rhythm, and understanding a few key nuances regarding timing, ordering, and etiquette can significantly enhance your visit. Here are five expert tips to ensure you get the freshest and most authentic flavors available.
1. Look for Rice Perfection
In Japanese cuisine, sushi is judged first by its rice. Great sushi rice should be slightly warm or room temperature, lightly seasoned with vinegar, and hold together without being mushy. If a restaurant serves cold, hard, or overly sweet rice, the quality of the fish will not matter much.
2. Embrace the "Formule" (Set Menu)
Many high-quality sushi spots in Arles offer a "formule" or set menu during lunch hours. These combinations often include a mix of nigiri, maki, and sides at a significantly lower price than ordering à la carte. It is the best way to sample a chef’s range without overspending.
3. Ask About the Catch of the Day
Given Arles’ proximity to the Mediterranean, the best chefs often feature fish that arrived that morning. Do not be afraid to ask if they have any specials or local fish available as sashimi. This is where you will often find the most exciting and fresh flavors that are not on the standard printed menu.
4. Book Ahead for Dinner
Arles is a bustling tourist destination, especially during the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival and the summer months. The top-rated sushi restaurants are often small, intimate spaces. Making a reservation for dinner is highly recommended to avoid a long wait or being turned away at the door.
5. Consider the Takeaway Quality
If you are planning a picnic near the Alyscamps or along the banks of the Rhône, sushi is a fantastic portable option. However, ask the restaurant to pack the soy sauce separately and keep the fish cool. Opt for rolls that hold up well in transit, such as California rolls or futomaki, rather than delicate nigiri which can shift in the box.
Arles may be thousands of miles from Tokyo, but the passion for quality and freshness is palpable in its best kitchens. The city’s unique position as a cultural melting pot allows it to offer Japanese cuisine with a distinctly Provençal soul.
Whether you are winding down after a day of exploring the Roman ruins or looking for a light, healthy meal before an evening stroll through the Place du Forum, these sushi spots provide a welcome alternative to the heavier local fare. Trust the locals, follow your palate, and you will discover that Arles holds its own in the world of Japanese gastronomy.
