Saint-Malo is a city of granite, sea spray, and dramatic tides, but its beauty is best appreciated from above. While the historic ramparts and bustling beaches draw the crowds at street level, a quieter world exists on the rooftops. Here, the salty breeze mixes with the aroma of fresh coffee, and the panoramic views stretch from the solid stone towers of the old city to the endless blue of the English Channel.
The rise of the rooftop café scene in Saint-Malo has transformed the way both locals and travelers experience the Corsair City. No longer is dining with a view reserved solely for fine dining establishments; instead, a variety of relaxed, stylish spaces have opened their terraces to the public. These venues offer the perfect vantage point to watch the tide roll in, observe the ferries departing for England, or simply soak in the golden hour light as it bathes the ramparts.
Whether you are looking for a mid-morning espresso after walking the city walls, a light lunch with a sea view, or a sundowner as the sky turns pink over the bay, there is a rooftop spot to suit your mood. The coastal climate means these terraces are highly sought after during the spring and summer months, offering a breezy escape from the bustling streets below. Many are tucked away within boutique hotels or modern brasseries, providing a sense of discovery for those willing to look up.
This guide focuses on the best elevated experiences in the city, prioritizing venues that offer genuine views, quality beverages, and a welcoming atmosphere. We have considered the quality of the coffee, the variety of the menu, and the uniqueness of the vantage point to ensure your time is well spent. You won’t find generic chain coffee shops here; instead, we highlight places that capture the maritime spirit of the Breton coast.
For visitors, navigating the narrow streets of the Intra-Muros (the walled city) can be overwhelming, but knowing where to find a good seat with a view can change your entire itinerary. Taking a break at a rooftop café allows you to appreciate the architectural layout of the city, from the sharp spire of the cathedral to the sprawling beaches of the Paramé district. It is the perfect way to rest your feet without missing out on the scenery.
Below, we have curated a list of the 12 best rooftop cafés in Saint-Malo, ranging from hidden gems inside the city walls to breezy terraces overlooking the Sillon beach. Each location has been selected for its distinct character and its ability to provide a memorable, elevated perspective of this historic port.

Scallop entree was tasty, main course beef was superb, cheese plate afterward was ordinary. The staff started out attentive and interested, but service quality dropped away later in the evening. Not much atmosphere. For the price, it was disappointing - apart from the beef main course which was faultless.

Such a fantastic venue, we want to stay here on our next visit. Friendly staff and courteous, well prepared food and presented first class.
A little background music would bring the atmosphere to the next level.
Decor was perfect.

Overall a disappointing dinner experience.
My wife and I had dinner at Le Petit Be and were underwhelmed. There was no one major error but all elements of the experience were a let down.
Overall the menu appears good and when plated the food looks impressive. We both ordered “The Egg” as a starter which was fairly good but not very memorable. My wife got the langoustine which was served with wantons also filled with langoustine. I ordered the pollock which was served with onion, potatoes and clams. In both cases the dishes were under seasoned and surprisingly bland. The pollock seemed to be cooked correctly but lacked a lot of a flavor.
Lastly, the service. It wasn’t rude or gruff, rather more indifferent and not attentive. Our waiter was ignorant on the elements of some dishes when questions were posed and kept having to go to other staff for answers. Also food was served with no explanation of the dish which would be more typical given the price point.
We only ordered a bottle of water to drink and the total came to over 80 euros. Spending that much for dinner isn’t a problem if the quality of the service and food are on point. I’d consider trying this restaurant again if the service were tightened up and the food improved to match the price.

Super friendly staff! Great atmosphere and amazing food! We came a but late for lunch …but I needed something simple to eat badly. The staff was very accommodating and the kitchen was able to pull out a simple quiche which was just delicious! And perfect. Great view over Saint-Malo and the harbour if you are sitting outside. Highly recommend this place! We first wanted to sit next door… but they were rude.. so I would choose this place over again.

Puh, I usually don't do bad reviews, but this time, I feel, it is important. We were there in June on a saturday evening. The restaurant was about 50% booked.
On aarival, we were greeted without a smile or anything. The table and the view of the restaurant are awesome. The prices are high, but okay. The food is okay - some courses were good, some were mediocre, some were just not that convincing.
What made it a horrible experience, was the service. The chef de service and a waitress were both unfriendly, inable to smile, extremely slow (10 minutes wait for the initial water, correpsonding wines to the courses came after the meals, after 3 hours and 4 courses we had to order the bill to get our dessert and the corresponding wine). Both servers are not professionals, and are not satisfied with their job. We recommend a new team, because the location and view of the restaurant are outstanding - just the soft skills do not match the rest of the experience.

This is a hidden gem. We found this place by chance. The service was very friendly and prompt. It wasn’t overly busy and it felt like a private secluded area, but we did go in mid October.
The views over the ocean are spectacular! We could have stayed here for hours!
Would return.
Remi★★★★★
Super reasonable prices for such a gorgeous location - many other places would hike up the price of a beer to something stupid. I enjoyed some oysters and white wine as the sunset and the staff and service was quick.
The reviews on here about bad service (especially the ones noting that is was a heatwave of dangerous proportions) are a bit stupid. Why should they run around to serve you a drink in 37 degrees, service industry staff really suffered in the heatwave and also yes service can be slow if somewhere is understaffed and very very busy.

Very nice place to have a wonderful sundowner. We loved the food, nice plates of cheese and salami, also great oysters. Clear recommendation, we will be back. Service people very nice.

Nice terrace just by the seaside. They have a wide range of beers and wines, some cocktails and some non-alcoholic drinks. You'll get tap water for free, if asking for it. Good service, considering the terrace is really large. The food is not fantastic (we had some deep fired calamari and some fish meatballs), but you don't go there for the food. The view is absolutely perfect. Perfect place to enjoy Saint Malo's beautiful sunsets or just to gaze at the sea.

A lovely little spot. Rooms are well appointed, comfortable, and clean. The staff is super nice. The location and amenities (restaurant, rooftop bar) are wonderful. This place is a real gem!
Nana Oganesyan★★★★★
Located directly on La Plage du Sillon, the hotel offers immediate access to the sea and promenade. Rooms are quite small but functional. There’s a rooftop terrace with panoramic sea views and cocktails. On the ground floor, there’s a crêperie with a view serving Breton dishes.
Waking up to the view of La Manche felt like waking up inside a slow film. The ocean came right up to the balcony, then quietly moved back, leaving smooth sand behind.
Calm, quiet, and a pleasant experience.

Fabulous little hotel right on the beach and 20 mins walk to town by road or beach! Rooftop bar as well!

Yvonne Hunziker★★☆☆☆
Except for the stunning view this was disappointing. Small room, terrible shower, worst breakfast and service ever! How difficult is it to keep bread and coffee filled up? Staff unfriendly and unhelpful. Parking reservation though confirmed in writing then was unavailable. Disappointing for the price, not recommended!
Sarah Kendrick★★☆☆☆
We stayed for one night and they didn't even tell us we weren't staying at the actual hotel! But in an annexe further down that we couldn't find and no one showed us until I asked. The room was OK but for £200 a night this was a total rip off. The entrance to our room was disgusting, unacceptable. We booked parking and the car wouldn't fit into the garage space available so they had to find us alternative parking at another hotel 20minutes away. The whole hotel is dated and ugly. We will never stay again.

We arrived on the last order for late lunch , there’s a lot of ppl but their service is still professional but friendly service mind , salade super fresh , all galette and crepe we ordered are very good , price is reasonable , everything surprised us for the restaurant front beach .
Pierre Merret★☆☆☆☆
Appalling service that makes you question the very fundamentals of human interaction.
We were greeted by a waiter that would barely look at us or say hello. Same waiter then rudely and abruptly placed us while the room was essentially empty and there were no booked tables, then struggled to understand our order even though we amicably and patiently explained multiple times a very simple and common extra ingredient choice in such establishments. We then waited for the staff to finish eating as we could see them from our table, which took them a solid 30 minutes, during which we were left stranded and hungry, making by with apple juice so cloudy and tasteless we could not help but wonder if if was the bottom of a barrel. We then were greeted by a complete mess since our order has been fumbled and the waiter arrived with four plates instead of two. We then once again patiently explained again that extra lngredients did not in fact mean a doubled order, had to see him go back to the kitchen so that we could explain our order directly to the cook (who had been eating while we were starving). We then waited a solid 15 minutes for them to solve this complex equation and were finally greeted by messy but somewhat correct plates.
We ate but any joy brought by the view failed to make the meal even slightly satisfactory. Then came the real fun, where we had to pay and the cashier wanted to make us pay for twice what we had eaten. We had to explain again but the complexity of the matter was increased by the fact the waiter had simply billed us for complete nonsense. The cashier then had to ask him for clarification through the kitchen door, through which he insulted us without even showing his face (a coward atop of being an incompetent it seems). We settled on an amount and were offered feeble and unfelt apologies by the cashier.
On a side note that helps to illustrate the laziness of the staff, a couple arrived while we were eating in what was an empty room and instead of cleaning the table with a view next to us ( that had been left in that state for 30 mins already), the same waiter offered them the first table he could find.
With staff so blatantly interested only by their own comfort, what you enter is not a restaurant but a cheap theater show ran by overgrown, moody teenagers.
The beach is long and beautiful, keep walking
Maddalena Sarti★★★★★
The view on the sea is what makes it deserve 5 stars. Gallettes and crepes are ok and at a reasonable price.
Jeremy★★☆☆☆
My experience unfortunately alines with Alain’s below.
One of the rare times I didn’t check google reviews ahead of time. We were famished and needed to feed our crepe addiction - and why not enjoy the view? I mean, with this location I expected them to be expensive, but not bad.
While we were starving and happy to put anything in our mouths. I could barely swallow it. The crepes were creamy! - like watery and flavorless. Both the apple and the savory were appalling. I couldn’t understand how anyone can make such a bad crepe after eating at dozens of creperies for even a few euros on the side of the road.
But the worst part really was the vibe. My 9-year old daughter said the environment was like “Cruella-Deville-chic.” Nailed it!
The waitress seemed completely disinterested in being pleasant to us (though she was sweeter to the older folks near us). She never asked if we wanted water and rarely came by so we had to ask another waiter.
I give two stars for the coffee at least tasted like coffee. And, while the bay windows were dirty, at least there was that gorgeous Saint-Malo seaside view!
With such a location and view, it’s an easy fix however: create a warmer environment, with more pleasant staff, attentive service, clean windows, and for heaven’s sake make a decent crepe like your neighbors!
Until then, either way, I’d recommend guests enjoy the very warm local vibes of the nearby F.A.V.ourite Cafe.

What a darling little cafe! Most of our mornings in San Malo started before they opened at 10am, and I'm so glad we were able to stop in on our last day. We've eaten almost exclusively pastry for breakfast while we've been in France and I decided to break from that norm. The granola and yogurt was perfect for a day on the trains. The shop is cute and the owner spoke beautiful English. I heard her speaking with many of the guests. I loved the eclectic decor and watching the ferries on the water. Lovely spot.
Jessica Moens★★★★☆
Cozy coffee bar with savory and sweet options. The vegan options were not clearly marked, but the staff is knowledgeable and can tell you what is vegan, or what can be adapted to suit a vegan diet. I had the vegetarian hot dog, but in pita bread (not the brioche which contains butter), and without cheddar. The sausage itself is plantbased. I also had the banana bread. The first bite was a bit dry, but the rest was yummie.

Great little spot. Friendly and accommodating. Took trouble to create vegan option from a veggie one and explain which desserts didn’t contain dairy. Nice relaxed and welcoming environment. If you like ginger, can recommend the ginger and hibiscus tea. Recommend.

This café/bistro is different to the luxury or traditional ones. Good location to relax and have a drink, cold or hot and to have a small lunch and dinner. The people joining the café are mixed, young and old. The service is very friendly and helpful. All-in-all a good place to take a rest or to view people walking along the promenade.

It is nice modern and cousy place to have quick bite, coffee, to talk or to have a date. Personal is charming and welcoming, coffee is good, atmosphere is easy and calm.
The only missing point is menu. The current one is not giving good option for brunch, and very expensive for this time of food.

Great cafe serving delicious breakfast, lunches, coffee and cakes all day. I really enjoyed my breakfast here and I had scrambled eggs on toast which was superb. Fresh eggs cooked well. My partner had porridge with fruits and a coffee. The smoothie was also good made fresh. Good service reasonable prices and a good menu.

We had lovely matcha, coffee, and scone here. The staff are attentive and friendly. The chairs are not very comfortable at all though. I’m sure any French person would know, but if you are not from france, the cafe does not serve food from their menu later in the afternoon. We now know most places don’t serve throughout the day, but just helpful for other tourists to know this

The front of the building makes it seem like a small hotel without much to it but that changes on the inside. It becomes very spacious and with a bar attached to it, which I will not rate as I did not eat/drink anything there.
Some of the rooms have a great view of the beach and the sea. The bathroom is fully stocked with hand and shower soaps, towels and even a hairdryer. Sadly, it did not work very well in my case but that might have been bad luck on my side. Also, in room 202 the bathroom lock did not work, but again, probably bad luck.
The room itself wasn't very big, but had a TV and a water heater for making tea and coffee.
Overall it was quite good, but could've been better.

This place blew me away. It was meant to simply be a place to stay the night after a 9 hour drive enroute to the ferry to Jersey. Get the room with a terrace if you can. Staff was wonderful and they had a bar right on the beach! Breakfast was just ok. Parking can be a nightmare.

A pleasant terrace bar, but sometimes you have to go and order your drinks directly at the bar. Regardless, the place is lovely for its view of the sea and the Sillon beach in St Malo.
Tips for Enjoying Rooftop Cafés in Saint-Malo
Visiting a rooftop café in a coastal city like Saint-Malo comes with its own set of considerations, from the unpredictable weather to the timing of the tides. The following advice will help you maximize your experience, ensuring you get the best seat, the best view, and the best value during your visit. Keep these practical tips in mind to avoid common tourist pitfalls and enjoy the city like a local.
- Time Your Visit with the Tides: The view from a rooftop changes dramatically depending on whether the tide is high or low. For a classic "city in the sea" view, aim for high tide when the water surrounds the ramparts. For a view of the vast, sandy beaches, low tide is spectacular.
- Watch the Weather and the Wind: Even on a sunny day, the sea breeze on a rooftop can be strong and cool. Bring a light jacket or sweater, especially if you plan to stay for a sunset drink. Many terraces have windbreakers, but it is best to be prepared.
- Book Ahead for Sunset: The golden hour is the most popular time to be on a terrace. If the café takes reservations, especially those within hotels, book a table for the early evening to secure a front-row seat to the sunset over the bay.
- Look Beyond the Intra-Muros: While the old town is charming, some of the best open-air terraces with unobstructed sea views are located slightly outside the walls, particularly along the Sillon beach. Don’t be afraid to walk ten minutes for a better panorama.
- Respect the Local Pace: Service in France, particularly in scenic spots, is often leisurely. Don’t rush your coffee. Rooftop cafés in Saint-Malo are designed for lingering, people-watching, and relaxation, so allow yourself time to enjoy the atmosphere.
Finding a moment of elevation in Saint-Malo is about more than just quenching your thirst; it is about connecting with the maritime soul of the city. As the seagulls glide past at eye level and the sound of the harbor fades into a gentle hum, you understand why this city has inspired explorers and writers for centuries.
Whether you choose a trendy spot overlooking the modern marina or a historic terrace shadowed by the ramparts, the experience of dining above the streets adds a layer of magic to your visit. So, next time you find yourself wandering the cobblestones of Saint-Malo, simply look up—your new favorite café is likely waiting just above the crowd.
