Saint-Malo holds a special place on the Breton coast. It is a city of privateers, dramatic tides, and granite ramparts that have witnessed centuries of maritime history. While most visitors come for the medieval architecture and the sweeping views of the Emerald Coast, the city also hides a vibrant after-dark scene. As the sun sets behind the ramparts, the narrow cobbled streets of Intra-Muros and the modern avenues outside the walls begin to hum with a different kind of energy.
Finding the right spot for a drink here is about more than just alcohol; it is about atmosphere. You might want a quiet corner to taste a local Breton cider or a lively pub to watch a rugby match. The city offers a diverse range of venues, from historic stone cellars that feel like secret hideouts to breezy terraces overlooking the marina. Each establishment has its own character, shaped by the sea air and the independent spirit of the Malouins.
The drinking culture in Saint-Malo is refreshingly unpretentious. You do not need to be a cocktail connoisseur to feel welcome, though you will certainly find experts behind the bar if you are. The local focus is strong, with many venues championing regional products such as Breizh Cola, KernΓ© cider, and beers from nearby microbreweries. This dedication to local sourcing gives the bar scene a distinct sense of place that you will not find in larger, more homogenized cities.
Navigating the bar scene can be a bit overwhelming if you are only in town for a short break. The walled city is compact, meaning some of the best spots are hidden down alleyways or below street level. Meanwhile, the neighborhoods of Saint-Servan and ParamΓ© offer excellent alternatives if you prefer to drink with the locals rather than the tourists. Knowing where to go saves you time and ensures you experience the true flavor of the city.
Whether you are looking for a pre-dinner aperitif, a late-night party, or a quiet nightcap after a long day of walking the ramparts, this guide has you covered. We have focused on venues that offer not just great drinks, but great stories, superior service, and that unique maritime ambiance. The goal is to help you drink like a local, avoiding the tourist traps while finding the true heart of the cityβs nightlife.
Here is our curated selection of the best bars in Saint-Malo, ranging from bustling pubs to refined wine bars.

A hidden gem in Saint-Malo! π΄πΉ
Who would expect a tropical surf bar with real sand under your feet in the middle of Brittany? Great atmosphere, friendly staff, cold drinks, and a unique beach vibe right inside the harbor.
A perfect place to end a day exploring Saint-Malo. Highly recommended! πβ

A very atmospheric place. I came across it one evening and couldnβt walk past. Outside a wooden-beamed faΓ§ade with the spirit of old Saint-Malo, rebuilt in 18th-century style. Inside warm light, soft music, quiet conversations. I sat outside first with a coffee, then with a cocktail, just watching the street. The service was kind and calm. A warm, simple, living place you want to remember. π€

This place is super cool and fun. Great music. Staff is friendly and laughs with you. Good gin-tonic and nice selection of wines by the glass. Sawdust or sand on the floor reminded me of T.S. Eliot "sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells". Quite a big selection of Latino and tropical drinks, too.

This bar never loses its "charme particulier". The staff through a series of grunts and shrugs are expertly able to communicate that English speaking guests are clearly not welcome. Over the years I have visited and attempted to visit this quirky watering hole promising never to return. However, this year we had a strong recommendation from a local restaurateur so decided give it another go. As they say . . . "ne reviens jamais!"

Turned away from a restaurant that apparently required reservations weeks in advance, we landed at La Carlingue on July 22nd without high hopes. We were absolutely charmed from beginning to end.
The staff was lovely, we were served quickly and efficiently, and to top off the evening, we had the immense pleasure of attending a performance by Hélianthème, a musical group that absolutely captivated us. A big thumbs up for the chef's ketchup, which my little brother absolutely loved and went back for seconds (yes, yes, when you love something, you keep coming back for more).

Mixed experience.
The appetizers and desserts were good, the main courses less so.
The seaweed tartare was excellent.
The burger was dry, and the vegetables contained a spice that should be mentioned when describing the dish, as it may not be suitable for everyone.
The staff was unprofessional; half the dishes were unavailable, and no one informed us.
The prices are reasonable.

This place has nothing to recommend it but the view. Youβll be surrounded by chain smokers/vapers and thereβs barely 10cm between the tables. I come to Saint-Malo quite regularly and it's my favorite place for a morning coffee or evening apero. Prices here are very competitive, especially for Intra Muros.
In the morning coffee and croissant cost 4 euros, a pinte of Leffe 7.90. In the early evening you get with your alcoholic drink the biggest apero plate I ever seen in France. It alone can be your light dinner.

Good location, service was OK, very nice lady took our first request and was very pleasant, second request was from a gentleman, but he was not so cheerful.
The appetizer platter that came free had very stale peanuts that likely had been recycled from previous customers, better to not provide this. I drank cider which was very good, my friend drank mojito but it tasted terrible with brown limes and bruised mint - not good, especially for this price!
All in all, I cannot recommend this unfortunately.

Small and a bit crowded on my visit, but the atmosphere and the friedliness of the staff were superb. Visit if you like places that are a bit weirder than the average tavern. Has a sort of metal/goth feel to it, and the beer selection is not the basic stuff. Place with a certain attitude and excentric feel to it. The toilets are not accessible to those with mobility issues. Cool place!

Do not go for Guinness. 1. Itβs 9euro. Itβs cheaper in the other Irish bar St. Patrick.
2. The bar man does not know how to pull a pint. Twice I refused the pint he pulled. Full of bubbles. It would make you ill if you drank it. Unfortunately the bar man wouldnt accept any advice on how to pour a Guinness and instead became very rude and defensive.
3. See one and two before. Avoid!!
If you brand yourself an Irish pub you have to to at least be able provide a drinkable pint of Guinness. Until the bar man educates himself itβs false advertisement.
Also some comments recommended the pub as a sports bar but when a full round of football was on tonight (30/08/22) the tv was turned off. So if youβre looking to watch sport go elsewhere.
Edit: LOL at the response. It is so embarrassing that you try to make bad excuses.
it is not rude to ask for a drink to be served correctly. if a bottle of wine was not balanced or was uncorked too long, no one would accept a glass of that wine. Itβs the same with beer or stout.
I was In your pub for 2 mins to order a drink and was perfectly polite (as can be in broken French) to request a fresh pint and help you do the correct technique but you wouldnβt do it correctly. Do you know that people can be very sick from the way you pour the drink.
Everyone see this response as proof of an arrogant and rude owner. If you want to go to an Irish pub, please go to the St. Patrick which is also French run but has friendly staff that treats customers with respect and can actually pour a Guinness .

Don't go. Whole of western France is over priced but this place takes the biscuit. 9 euros for a bad pint of guinness. He had to tell me 3 times how much the bill was, I couldn't believe it.

β¬9 for a pint of Guiness. Go to the other Irish bar.
Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Saint-Malo
To make the most of your evenings in the Corsair City, it helps to understand a few local customs and logistical details. The bar scene here is heavily influenced by the tides, the weather, and the distinct separation between the old town and the outer districts. A little preparation can turn a good night out into a great one. Below are some essential tips to help you navigate the scene like a seasoned local.
1. Embrace the ApΓ©ro Hour
The French tradition of "l’apΓ©ro" is sacred in Saint-Malo. Between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, bars fill up with people enjoying a drink before dinner. This is often the liveliest and most social time of day. Many bars offer specific pricing or small snacks during this window, and it is the best time to secure a prime spot on a terrace.
2. Book Ahead for Intra-Muros Weekends
The walled city is small, and the best bars fill up incredibly fast on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have your heart set on a specific cocktail bar or a table with a sea view, call ahead or arrive early. This is especially true during the summer months and during major events like the Route du Rhum.
3. Try the Local Brews and Ciders
While you can get a standard international lager anywhere, you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not try the regional beverages. Look for local Breton beers, artisanal ciders served in ceramic bowls (bolΓ©es), and Chouchen, a traditional Breton mead. Bartenders are usually very proud of their local selections and happy to offer recommendations.
4. Understand the Geography
Saint-Malo is effectively split into distinct zones. Intra-Muros (inside the walls) is atmospheric but can be pricier and more tourist-focused. The Saint-Servan district, across the harbor, offers a more residential and relaxed vibe with excellent neighborhood bars. If you want a sunset view over the water, look towards the beaches of ParamΓ© or the terraces along the Sillon.
5. Plan Your Transport
Driving in Saint-Malo after a few drinks is strictly discouraged, and parking inside the walls is nearly impossible anyway. The city is very walkable, but if you are staying outside the center, check the local bus schedules or arrange a taxi. Walking the ramparts at night is beautiful, but be mindful of the steep steps and uneven cobblestones after dark.
The beauty of drinking in Saint-Malo lies in its contrast. You can spend an evening in a 17th-century cellar that once stored sails and gunpowder, then walk five minutes to a sleek, modern bar with a view of the marina. The sound of the sea is never far away, and the salt air seems to make every drink taste just a little bit better.
Ultimately, the best bar is the one that matches your mood. Whether you choose a rowdy pub filled with sailorsβ songs or a quiet wine bar where you can hear the clink of glasses, Saint-Malo offers an authentic and memorable night out. Raise a glass to the Corsairs, and enjoy the evening.
