Saint-Malo is a city defined by the sea. Its granite ramparts, tidal extremes, and proud privateer history give it a character unlike anywhere else in Brittany. For visitors, however, the experience is not complete without stepping into one of its many cafés. Whether you are seeking a strong espresso before exploring the old town or a quiet corner to watch the rain roll in from the English Channel, the café culture here is an essential part of the local rhythm.
The intra-muros district, with its cobbled streets and historic stone buildings, is naturally where most visitors begin. Yet the café scene extends well beyond the walls into the Paramé and Saint-Servan neighborhoods. Each area offers a distinct atmosphere, from bustling terraces overlooking the marina to residential spots where locals read the morning paper in peace. Knowing where to go can transform a simple coffee break into a memorable travel moment.
Brittany is known for its quality ingredients, and the cafés of Saint-Malo reflect that pride. You will find far more than standard chain coffee here. Many establishments source their beans from local roasters, bake their own pastries on-site, and serve regional specialties like kouign-amann, far breton, and galettes. The best places balance a warm welcome with a genuine sense of place, making you want to linger longer than planned.
Price and pace vary significantly from one café to the next. Some are designed for quick takeaway before catching the ferry to Dinard or the Channel Islands. Others invite you to sit for an hour with a book or a notebook. Understanding what you want from the experience—speed, scenery, or solitude—will help you choose the right spot for your mood and itinerary.
This guide is written for travelers who want to avoid the tourist traps and drink coffee like a local. The recommendations below focus on quality, atmosphere, and consistency. Whether you are visiting for a weekend or a full week, these addresses will give you a reliable starting point for exploring the city’s café culture.
Below is a curated selection of the best cafés in Saint-Malo, each chosen for its distinct character and commitment to quality.

Lovely cafe with a wide variety of drinks. My breakfast was simple eggs, with toast and salted butter & a side of avocados. The food was delicious, & service prompt. The place does fill up quickly.
Reinout★★★★☆
Great food (we went there twice for breakfast), no nonsense but delicious. Super friendly staff, English menu's , pastries we're on point and coffee was high quality, would definitely recommend!
Yesle Hong★★★★★
A cozy and welcoming café in Saint-Malo! The staff were warm and attentive, and the food and coffee were excellent. Their brunch menu changes with the seasons, which makes each visit a bit different and special!
Oleksii Zhaburovskyi★★★★★
It is a cool place to take a coffee, spend time with friends or have a date. The coffee is really good and people looks very experienced on it. The food selection is small, but delicious and expected for this format. The place itself is very clean, comfortable and well organized.
Gerard Daly★★★★★
We had a lovely breakfast here two mornings running. The people are so nice and the food is so carefully prepared - its a cut above anywhere else around. AND we got an egg topper on Amazon just like the one they showed us 🥰

It is nice modern and cousy place to have quick bite, coffee, to talk or to have a date. Personal is charming and welcoming, coffee is good, atmosphere is easy and calm.
The only missing point is menu. The current one is not giving good option for brunch, and very expensive for this time of food.
Amélie COUQUE★★★☆☆
Popular café with a nice homemade apple juice and generous granola
Sophie Trinh★★★★★
Trued their dark latte.. love it.. most same taste at HK..
Julian Asher★★★★★
Great cafe serving delicious breakfast, lunches, coffee and cakes all day. I really enjoyed my breakfast here and I had scrambled eggs on toast which was superb. Fresh eggs cooked well. My partner had porridge with fruits and a coffee. The smoothie was also good made fresh. Good service reasonable prices and a good menu.
Sarah★★★★☆
We had lovely matcha, coffee, and scone here. The staff are attentive and friendly. The chairs are not very comfortable at all though. I’m sure any French person would know, but if you are not from france, the cafe does not serve food from their menu later in the afternoon. We now know most places don’t serve throughout the day, but just helpful for other tourists to know this

Absolutely loved this place. The coffee was incredibly delicious and perfectly made, and the pan du chocolat.. honestly, beyond words absolutely magnificent. Everything was so beautiful, with the most wonderful breeze creating such a relaxing atmosphere. The space itself is lovely, the service was amazing, and there was even the cutest little dog sleeping there that completely stole all my attention. I’ll definitely be coming back for sure.
Rebecca Jamie★★★★★
We got here early on a wet day and the quiet atmosphere and warmth was so cosy.. but the highlight- especially as an Aussie- they use FRESH MILK in their coffee!!! First time in my European travels I have ever come across this - as everywhere else uses box UHT milk. The taste was perfect!! Just like home. Could not recommend enough. Croissants we ordered were also excellent.
Lynn D★★★★★
such a nice place for coffee, brunch and sweets. The customer service is good, the food tastes super nice and there are many board games to try as well
littlearmel★★★★★
Delicious coffee, relaxing atmosphere, not on a busy street so it's perfect for a morning coffee to enjoy outside on the terrace. And the staff girls were a joy !
Ross Lucas-Young★★★★★
Absolutely excellent so friendly helpful and spoke a little English which with my poor French was enough to order what ever you wanted. Patisserie’s were to die for. All home made French cooking we will be back as we come to Saint Malo regularly as we love the place

Went here twice during a recent trip to St Malo, absolutely incredible food and drink which was very reasonably priced, staff were amazing and helpful. Whole heartedly recommend going for breakfast here!
Kate Kellaway★★★★★
This is an outstanding little café in a medieval street. The menu is mouthwateringly delicious - original too. It is a gorgeous combination of French and more exotic tastes. We had the Sunday brunch and thought it miraculously good. I dream of a return for second and third helpings. BUT you do need to book. The place is small and deservedly popular
ian canales★★★★★
Perfect place for a breakfast, food is great and ingredients are fresh, I tried their "super detoxifyer" (or something like that) and it does help with transit and energy (its a bit rough tastewise tho... but I still recommand).
The atmosphere is very calm, its small and feels kinda like a cafe with great food, very chill.
Would recommand for breakfast, i don't know about other meals but since the food was great I would assume lunch and dinner are good as well.
Caitlin Welch★★★★★
One of the culinary highlights of our trip to Saint Malo. We ate here twice, returning because the coffee and food were so excellent. Lovely location and nice blankets outside! Thanks for two wonderful experiences 😊

This is a very unique bar in Saint Malo, but a great experience. It is old world interior which makes it a great place.
The prices, service and atmosphere are great.
Would return.
SARAH BANCROFT★★★★★
Loved this place.
So quirky in its decoration.
Swinging chair at the bar, 1st time seeing this.
Was bit pricey €12 for 2x half ciders.
Indoor and outdoor seating.
Ezgi Ogutcen★★★★★
I needed a quick break from the heat and what drew me to this place was the name. Everything about this place is chaotic and fun, and the waitress was very friendly. If you sit indoors, you'd never be bored as the decor is like a never-ending adventure for your eyes. As a bonus, the prices are a bit lower than average, but the quality is the same.
高紹瑀Amber Kao★★★★★
Super! Amazing space!
Like fall into a dream~ Love here very much!
Very friendly lady in the Cafe when I visited.
Espresso was nice and great valued.
A must go place in Saint Malo~
Bazil Guernsey★☆☆☆☆
This bar never loses its "charme particulier". The staff through a series of grunts and shrugs are expertly able to communicate that English speaking guests are clearly not welcome. Over the years I have visited and attempted to visit this quirky watering hole promising never to return. However, this year we had a strong recommendation from a local restaurateur so decided give it another go. As they say . . . "ne reviens jamais!"

Great ambiance, warm and attentive service, and an unforgettable meal. I ordered the Terre et Mer (surf and turf) crêpe, and it was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the smoked duck was rich and savory, and the buttery buckwheat crêpe was wonderfully crisp. Everything paired beautifully with a glass of local cider. A perfect taste of Brittany!
Borja Marazuela★★★★★
Best crépe I've ever had! The savoury crepes were very good but the sweet one with home made chocolate and Chantilly....out of this world! Also very cheap for the quality and the amazing service!
Anne Ngunu★★★★★
From the moment we arrived, the team offered exceptional service — the kind that makes you feel genuinely seen and cared for. They immediately helped us find a temporary parking solution since we had our baby with us, and that thoughtful gesture set the tone for the entire visit.
Inside, the staff brought a personal touch to everything: recommending dishes with sincerity, checking in with warmth, and creating a space that felt both comfortably relaxed and subtly luxurious. It’s rare to find a place that balances those two feelings so effortlessly.
The galettes were superb — beautifully prepared, generous, and full of flavor. Dessert was just as impressive, indulgent without being heavy, and all at a price that felt refreshingly affordable for the quality offered.
They truly lived up to their Google reviews, and in many ways exceeded them. A place that understands hospitality, craft, and heart. Highly recommended.
Daniel Banh★★★★★
Quite a busy spot so better to book in advance. Lots of options for galette and crepes, including vegetarian options. A nice spot for tea as well in the afternoon
Dennis Corsten★★★★★
Excellent place, very friendly and helpful staff, very friendly with our kids. The restaurant looks very nice. The meals are a treat for the eyes and taste wonderful. Very balanced flavours, it is listed and famous as a crêpe restaurant but their omelettes and salades are also very good. They also have a great selection of tea and have some nice wines if that's more for you.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this place when visiting the port of Saint-Malo.

Unlicensed Flat White Critic★★★☆☆
Sadly this was my least favorite coffee in France. I will say that the coffee shop is super cute and was an enjoyable place to spend a little time in as there's lots of cute decor to look at and take in. The espresso shot from my flat white was super watery and the milk was steamed to where it was burnt. Definitely no frilly coffee art either. A very sad flat white. The barista was all business. She joked that if the shop got too busy she would kick us out. I'm not sure she was joking. I think that's just the French culture though. However dealing with a snarky barista would be easier if the coffee was excellent. I'm just saying.
Sergey Jankin★★★★★
A wonderful and very cozy café that you won't want to leave. You feel right at home there: warm and cozy. We really enjoyed it.
riley★★★★★
Very kind service, bilingual and able to help in English which is useful as a tourist with only basic French. Coffee was good and the scones very delicious. Very funny, fun atmosphere. Will definitely be returning here! (Not really a place to be working on a computer though, not enough room. Just fyi)
Claire Allen★★★★★
Wonderful place! We ate here every morning while in town. The owner is so kind and helpful despite us not speaking French. Plus the smoothie and take away ham sandwich’s were especially delicious.
Dmitri Dolgov★★★★☆
I guess you cannot expect a proper English breakfast outside of Britain, this was *just* ok. Scone (cream tea) was not tender. Very small place and one person only working (slow season).

Super friendly staff! Great atmosphere and amazing food! We came a but late for lunch …but I needed something simple to eat badly. The staff was very accommodating and the kitchen was able to pull out a simple quiche which was just delicious! And perfect. Great view over Saint-Malo and the harbour if you are sitting outside. Highly recommend this place! We first wanted to sit next door… but they were rude.. so I would choose this place over again.
Anaïs Toro-Engel★★★★★
Amazing place with very friendly staff, good vibes, yummy menu for lunch and very reasonable prices. In extra, a big terrace with a view on the harbor that you will love during sunny days. A hidden gem and definitely one of the best bars in Saint-Malo!
Conor O'Sullivan★★★★★
Lovely spot, friendly service and great food 😋
Ben Saunders★★★★★
Stumbled across this place while trying to find somewhere to enjoy a beer while waiting for our ferry. Sensibly priced drinks. Sat outside and watched the activities on the marina.

Step into this bright cafe in Saint Malo for the richest chocolate chaude and a bite of cake.
The cheesecake is light, rich and drips with a pleasant passionfruit sauce, dusted with icing sugar.
The hot chocolate is intense, slightly bitter, rich and includes a little sachet of dark chocolate to add if you feel the need.
We also tried a cookie maison, with chocolate and pecan nuts.
Truly worth finding.
It’s a great cafe to wind down if you happen to be wandering through St Malo.
Steven Specht★★★★★
We had a good experience. Food was a little slow, but they have a few toys to occupy kids during the wait.
Geoffrey Crofte★★★★★
Staff is friendly, they have good breakfast and homemade muesli and muffins. The terrace is calm and you can find sun or shadow spots.
Anaïs Toro-Engel★★★★★
My favorite coffee place in Saint-Malo! Tasty food for lunch with a lot of veggie options and amazing cookies for tea time, worth the try!

I came across this restaurant almost by chance while walking down a street full of seafood restaurants, and I’m so glad I decided to stop here.
We went for some typical local dishes, starting with a plate of oysters to share, followed by mussels with French fries — absolutely delicious, and genuinely one of the highlights of the meal. We also ordered the fish of the day, which was cooked beautifully and served with a delicious garlic sauce. Even the steak was very good and definitely held its own.
The service was another highlight: friendly, warm, and welcoming. The staff were genuinely lovely and made us feel at home.
The bill was fair and honest for the quality and quantity of food. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the whole experience felt authentic and unpretentious.
The setting is rustic and traditional, which fits the restaurant perfectly. Highly recommended if you’re looking for fresh seafood, good food, and a warm, genuine atmosphere.
robin anthony★★★★★
Really good value. Lovely fresh seafood, amazing friendly hosts, and all at a decent price. Buzzy and packed. Worth turning up early or booking.
Satu★★★★★
What a lovely place! The meal was perfect. We had mussels prepared two different ways, and both were absolutely excellent, fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor 🦪
Probably the best mussels I’ve ever had! The space was cozy and relaxed, and the location was excellent. The service was energetic, fun, and genuinely friendly. Bravo, full marks! I truly hope I’ll get to come back someday. If you’re heading to Saint-Malo, don’t miss this place!😋
Katherine Reulein★★★★★
Per Chance came across this small restaurant at lunchtime. Lucky for us!! Given a very friendly welcome by one of the two guys who seemed to be running the place. Very laid back atmosphere.
Food great. My husband had the mussels and I the fish of the day which was delicately cooked and served on sweet potatoe purée, vegetables and seafood sauce. Accompanied by a very good Rosé. To finish a couple of espresso’s. If ever back in St Malo, would certainly return!! Thanks 🙏
Graham Nicholls★★★★★
Loved the food here..
No complaints especially as the guy serving us helped with good English speaking.
I had the fish and chips with a big platter of mixed shell seafood.
Very popular location and was lucky to get a table.
I would recommend visit before eating to book or check availability for a table ..
Thanks again for the fantastic fresh food..

What a darling little cafe! Most of our mornings in San Malo started before they opened at 10am, and I'm so glad we were able to stop in on our last day. We've eaten almost exclusively pastry for breakfast while we've been in France and I decided to break from that norm. The granola and yogurt was perfect for a day on the trains. The shop is cute and the owner spoke beautiful English. I heard her speaking with many of the guests. I loved the eclectic decor and watching the ferries on the water. Lovely spot.
Jessica Moens★★★★☆
Cozy coffee bar with savory and sweet options. The vegan options were not clearly marked, but the staff is knowledgeable and can tell you what is vegan, or what can be adapted to suit a vegan diet. I had the vegetarian hot dog, but in pita bread (not the brioche which contains butter), and without cheddar. The sausage itself is plantbased. I also had the banana bread. The first bite was a bit dry, but the rest was yummie.
Adrian Friday★★★★★
Great little spot. Friendly and accommodating. Took trouble to create vegan option from a veggie one and explain which desserts didn’t contain dairy. Nice relaxed and welcoming environment. If you like ginger, can recommend the ginger and hibiscus tea. Recommend.
Nico A.★★★★★
This café/bistro is different to the luxury or traditional ones. Good location to relax and have a drink, cold or hot and to have a small lunch and dinner. The people joining the café are mixed, young and old. The service is very friendly and helpful. All-in-all a good place to take a rest or to view people walking along the promenade.

Wonderful cafe, amazing service, happy to explain the menu and exceedingly friendly. Excellent food - had the sandwich, soup combo my partner had the duck salad both delicious.

Most delicious and wholesome meal. Very friendly staff. Small menu, but everything we had was delicious, so we'll worth a visit.

For people who love good food made by people who care. A small menu of absolutely delicious recipes made with love. No more expensive than anywhere else! If you're tired of Gallette, Crepe and Moules Frites at every turn, try this place, it's the real deal.
Jeremy Bailey★★★★★
Cafe Cargo Clute absolutely lives up to its Google rating. The owner was incredibly friendly and spent a good five minutes walking us through the lunch menu, sharing his personal favourites and suggesting thoughtful pairings. His passion for the café was obvious, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into curating the menu.
We had the lunch special and tried all three croques—each one was excellent. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the gazpacho was spot on for a warm, sunny day. Of course, we had to try the oysters too, which were fresh and juicy—an absolute treat. A great find in St. Malo—highly recommended!

We really enjoyed our experience at this restaurant, spent here four hours along with three bottles of prosecco. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There are five different oyster options in the menu, plenty to choose from your favorite ones. Mussels with blue cheese were really good as well. Oh and I couldn’t stop on eating their house butter with fresh bread. Yum.
Private Pigg★★★★★
Unbelievable seafood. Great outdoor setting. Oysters on the half shell, mussels in multiple different sauces, lobster, shrimp, and great wine! Make reservations! It’s always full!
Paul Punchard★★★☆☆
We were served our seafood platter but they didn't bring the little pins to eat the black winkles with and this was a big mistake because then the lady came over and seeing us using our ordinary stainless-steel utensils thought we were stupid English so she then realised we didn't have pins.
Also we ordered a very expensive Sancerre wine, 50 centilitres; it wasn't a full bottle and we ended up with a carafe in the ice bucket of white wine so it was impossible to know whether the wine that we ordered was the real Sancerre or not. She should have brought the bottle out, shown us the label, opened the bottle and emptied it into the carafe.
The food was delicious though.
Sariyya Abuzarli★★★☆☆
We were there for dinner. First of all for some reason waiter thought we don’t have money to pay for 140 Euro fish so he had to insistently remind price. Then that fish came overcooked, was falling apart in some parts. We had oysters they were really delicious and potato mash was great it is just those things above i am not happy about.

Great French food selection. Oysters of different types, super fresh. Worth to visit and try all, deserts too. Can be really full in the evening.

Delicious pastries and the seating area is very cute/well decorated. There is a huge selection of treats to choose from and I thought the prices were reasonable. The boxes that they package the pastries in have pretty floral designs.

We discovered this gem very early on in our holiday, and we ended up coming back here twice more! We made sure to try something different every time, because it all looked so good. The food is absolutely divine, with good vegetarian options available. It’s the perfect combination of bakery and cafe, with a quiet and peaceful seating area behind the main counter. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Incredible find. After getting off the ferry and heading south, we stopped here for coffee and breakfast. This place has the most wonderful croissants and pain au chocolate I’ve had in ages, clearly fresh from the oven. Wonderfully strong coffee too! We didn’t get anything else, but the selection of breads and pastries was very impressive. The queue was a bit long, but it’s clear they’re used to that and we got through fairly quickly. Lots of seating inside as well, and a fully functioning A/C system too! It’s a must after the ferry.

Busy spot for a morning bakery run, but busy for a reason. Cakes and deserts were splendid, as were the pastries. Would recommend the Saint Honore Caramel

Visited for breakfast after arriving on the early morning ferry at Saint Marlo. We stopped Here for breakfast last year and again this year. The food is fresh, a huge choice and the staff are friendly and helpful. The place has great atmosphere and although large is divided up well. We'll be back!
Tips for Enjoying Cafés in Saint-Malo
A little local knowledge goes a long way when planning your coffee stops in Saint-Malo. The city’s tidal schedule, seasonal tourism patterns, and Breton dining customs all influence when and how you should visit these establishments. The following tips will help you make the most of your time and avoid common frustrations.
Mind the tides. Saint-Malo has some of the largest tidal ranges in Europe. The waterfront cafés can feel completely different at high tide versus low tide. If you want the dramatic sea views, check the tide schedule and aim to arrive when the water is high. At low tide, the same terrace may overlook exposed sand and rocks, which is beautiful in its own way but not the classic postcard scene.
Arrive early or late to avoid crowds. The intra-muros district becomes extremely busy between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., especially in July and August. For a calmer experience, visit cafés right when they open or after the day-trippers have left. Early mornings are ideal for photographing the empty cobblestone streets with a coffee in hand.
Look for local roasters. Several cafés in Saint-Malo now work with Breton roasters based in Rennes, Nantes, or smaller nearby towns. Asking about the origin of the beans is a good conversation starter and often leads to a better cup. Baristas are usually happy to explain their sourcing choices.
Do not skip the pastry. Coffee in Brittany is rarely served alone. The region’s butter is world-famous, and it shows in the quality of the baked goods. Even if you are not hungry, splitting a kouign-amann or a simple croissant with your espresso is part of the experience.
Check opening days carefully. Many independent cafés in Saint-Malo close for one or two days a week, often Monday or Tuesday, especially outside peak season. Always verify current hours before walking across town, as they can change with the seasons.
Carry cash for small purchases. While most cafés now accept cards, some smaller spots have a minimum spend or prefer cash for a single espresso. A few euros in your pocket will save you from awkward moments.
Saint-Malo’s café scene rewards those who slow down and pay attention. The best moments often come not from a checklist but from an unplanned pause—a seat by the window, a warm bowl of café au lait, and the sound of gulls echoing off the ramparts. Take your time, ask questions, and let the rhythm of the city guide you.
Whether you are fueling up before a long walk along the Plage du Sillon or warming up after a windy ferry crossing, these cafés offer more than caffeine. They provide a window into the daily life of one of Brittany’s most fascinating coastal cities. A good coffee in Saint-Malo is rarely just a coffee—it is an invitation to sit still and appreciate where you are.
