Nestled in the heart of Provence, Avignon is a city where medieval grandeur meets the laid-back rhythm of southern France. While most visitors arrive to see the legendary Palais des Papes, the city’s magnetic charm often convinces them to linger far longer than planned. Choosing the right base is essential to unlocking the true magic of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The historic center, encircled by remarkably intact ramparts, offers an immersive experience where cobblestone lanes lead to hidden squares and bustling markets. However, the surrounding neighborhoods and the banks of the Rhône provide quieter retreats with stunning views of the skyline. Whether you are here for the performing arts festival or a quiet wine-tasting weekend, your accommodation sets the tone.
From opulent stays in converted medieval monasteries to sleek, contemporary boutiques, Avignon’s hospitality scene is surprisingly diverse. Travelers seeking old-world romance will find vaulted ceilings and antique furnishings, while modernists can enjoy minimalist design and rooftop pools. The best properties blend historical architecture with the comforts discerning guests expect today.
Proximity to transportation is another key consideration. If you plan to use the TGV station for day trips to Marseille or Lyon, staying near the city walls or with easy access to the shuttle bus can save valuable time. Conversely, those focusing purely on the intra-muros sights will want to be steps away from the Place de l’Horloge.
Our curated selection below focuses on quality, location, and authentic Provençal character. We have evaluated properties based on service consistency, guest feedback, and their ability to provide a genuine sense of place. You will find options ranging from five-star luxury to charming boutique hideaways.
Let this guide help you navigate the best that Avignon has to offer, ensuring your stay in the City of the Popes is as memorable as the history that surrounds you.

The hotel is more like a motel. However, don’t be put off by this as it’s actually really decent. The aircon is strong and there’s 2 doors to keep the noise out. The space in the room is big enough for 2 luggages to be opened.
The only downside is if you’re staying upstairs, you’ll need to carry your luggage up the stairs as there are no lifts. You can also hear people stomp upstairs and it might not be the best for you if you’re a light sleeper.
Overall a pleasant stay.

You need more than a bit of fresh paint to make a Hotel out of a Motel. Doesn't deserve the B&B stamp. Dirty bathrooms (calc, mold and hair) and worst breakfast ever (bread 2 days old, butter frozen, OJ sour).

I would give a negative rating for this hotel if it were possible. The rooms are small and walls are paper thin. Can hear everything going on around.
If that wasn’t bad enough the service is absolutely disgusting. The blond woman in reception/dining is such a rude animal. I hated this place.
My advice? Stay somewhere worse, you will have a better experience.

The hotel used be for short sleeping ok. But if you expect good service and 5 star breakfast, you won't get it.

The only redeeming feature of this smoke infested (elevator-less) hell hole is the fact it has a kettle. You do not have enough room to swing a cat and if you do work up the courage to try a breakfast in the restaurant, the staff hover around like detectives (or Gendamerie), give it a big miss!

Wonderful small family-run hotel five minutes walk from the train station. Sandrine, the owner, makes you feel right at home, and this is an exceptional choice for visiting Avignon. The major points of interest are a stroll away and lots of good restaurant & cafe options in the immediate neighborhood. Definitely have breakfast in the hotel. You will enjoy. We would certainly stay here again.

The Hotel Colbert is perfect. The hotel is family-owned, small, quiet and clean, in a very convenient location. We stayed for 6 nights and felt very comfortable there. The owner reserved a wonderful jazz dinner for us at a restaurant just 2 minutes away. We greatly enjoyed our stay!

GREAT air conditioning in the lobby and room, which was very much needed during the canicule of June 2026!
The front desk staff were always very helpful and friendly.
The location is great, with easy access to the Avignon Centreville train station, the tourism office, all the sites within the wall and many great restaurants. Highly recommend this hotel.

Loved this little hotel, super close to bars and restaurants and the sites of Avignon. Very friendly, no lift but this didn’t worry us as we only had hand luggage. Would be tricky with big suitcases to get up the narrow stairs. Our room was at the top, very quiet, everything was exactly as we hoped..

Excellent highly recommend, very friendly hosts who look after you.
Great location 5 mins from train station and the tourist centre. At the end of the road there is a square with many good local restaurants .. only 200m or less.
I really appreciated the genuine hospitality from the owner.

Was there for 1 night with a group, me and 2 of my friends got a clean room with no weird smells, and there were NO bugs there! Cool right? (119 room) There were the beds, a desk, a window and some lights, we had to go downstairs to use the kettle, though the service was very nice and we easily communicated in english since im polish and i dont know french. Why 4 stars for the rooms not 5? There was too little things inside, and some of the lights werent working. Location, its 3 because we had to go 14 bus stops to just to get into 1 km radius from the tourist attractions to it. The rooms are cozy, and for a simple person who doesnt want much its perfect. One more thing, some of the AC units in other rooms were stinky, not our though. So if you need a short term stay, its good!
Aleksandra Marszalek★★★☆☆
I loved the location and the service was nice.
The room itself wouldn't be too bad, bed was quite comfortable and the view was nice, but there was a ridiculously loud sound of flowing water going on all night. I tried turning the AC on and off but it didnt seem to influence it.
Maybe we were unlucky and the other rooms were ok, but I would try to exchange it if you hear any noise in the first place.

I loved this place. I wanted to spend an extended spell in the area (I spent 17 nights), so I wouldn't feel compelled to rush to see everything in 2-3 days; I wanted something moderately priced; I wanted breakfast included; and I wanted a location that though not within the medieval walls, was close enough that everything within the walls was within a 10 minute walk. Budget Ibis Avignon Centre fitted the bill. The room was bare-bones, but hey, it's a 2 star hotel. Things important to me about the room - quiet, clean, plenty of hot water, working TV - were taken care of. The bed is one of the most comfortable I've experienced. And the staff! Wonderful people, helpful, polite, all seemed to speak enough English that I could navigate - they even put up with my attempts at bad French. Unlike lots of places that advertise daily newspapers but don't actually have them, the hotel had a nice selection of reading material at the front desk. The continental breakfast was excellent: fresh baked goods, some fruit, cold cuts, jams, yogurt, cereals (muesli!), and excellent coffee machines. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Yes great location and staff nice. However make sure to get plenty of local wine into you before sleeping as the rooms are woeful. Zero noise proofing you could hear your neighbor brush their teeth it’s so bad! Not again!

I lived in this hotel when I went to Avignon, I remembered that the staff were really nice and friendly. After I backed to my country, I found that I left my AirPods at the hotel, they quickly checked the room and found it. They help me to sent my AirPods back and I have already received it, they are helpful!

I stayed here with my partner. The room was very small and cluttered, with one small window for fresh air and a tiny single sink (see photos). It hadn't been renovated in decades and was not clean: the mattress was dirty (see photos), the shower was dirty—nothing was clean. We were given only one tiny bar of soap (see photos) to wash ourselves.
The mattress was old and uncomfortable, and I returned home with severe back pain.
The booking included one breakfast, which was for me. On the first morning, the owner insisted that my room did not include breakfast and asked me to pay €12 to eat in a very depressing dining room. I had breakfast elsewhere for cheaper. The next day I did receive my breakfast, but we were never compensated for the first day.
To conclude: if you're on vacation, this place could completely ruin it. You're better off spending one less night in beautiful Avignon and booking a better hotel.

I recently stayed at Hotel Mignon in Avignon during my trip through France and it was a truly wonderful experience. The stay was very comfortable, the atmosphere was peaceful, and everything was perfectly clean and well maintained.
One of the highlights was definitely the food — everything was absolutely delicious, and the coffee was exceptional.
All the staff were incredibly kind and attentive, always ready to help with a smile. I felt warmly welcomed from the very beginning, which made my stay even more enjoyable.
The location of the hotel was also great, perfect for exploring the city on foot and enjoying its historic charm and relaxed vibe.
It was an unforgettable experience, and I truly hope to come back to this beautiful place soon!

This is a very nice and clean hotel about 5 minutes walk from the train station, and maybe 15-20 minutes walk to Palais des papes. Ample fresh cold drinking water is available on each floor in coolers near the elevators. Rooms are clean and modern. Lobby area is awesome with a pool table and games, as well as a bar and restaurant. There is a courtyard swimming pool that is well-maintained and is surrounded by recliner pool deck chairs and umbrellas, giving the feel of an upscale beach resort. Our room included a couple of complimentary juices, sparkling water, and mixed nuts. The layout of the bathroom is the only bizarre part, as the shower is visible to the bed through a glass wall that can be frosted with the push of a button. We had a peaceful stay, with the only concern being the restaurant staff. There were three of us eating and two meals were finished before the third meal was served (and it was cold). The taste of the food was delicious and the restaurant was not very busy, but the staff seemed unable to keep up with orders. Otherwise, I would recommend staying here. Certainly, a swimming pool in Europe in a hotel in this price range can be hard to find.

Don’t walk—run.
This was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had.
When we entered our room, it smelled like raw sewage. We immediately reported it to the front desk. The staff acknowledged the problem and brought an air purifier, but it did absolutely nothing to eliminate the odor. We were told the hotel was fully booked, so moving us to another room was not an option.
To make matters worse, while I was calmly explaining how frustrating the situation was after arriving late and simply wanting to shower before dinner, one of the front desk employees, Jeremy, became impatient and walked away from me mid-conversation. His colleague, Ilan, remained courteous and professional, but unfortunately there was no solution.
After returning home, I noticed multiple reviews mentioning the same sewage smell. If this is a recurring issue, guests should not be assigned to these rooms until the problem is permanently resolved.
A four-star hotel should provide a clean, comfortable room and respectful customer service. We received neither. I also contacted hotel management (Pauline) after our stay to request a resolution and never received a response.
I cannot recommend this hotel. There are many better options in Avignon that value their guests and maintain their rooms to an acceptable standard.
Jane Mooney★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately we can't recommend this hotel, although the location is good and the onsite parking (at €14 per night) is convenient that's where the positives end.
The room was large but the bed was the worst hotel bed l've slept in for a very long time. Our king size bed was two singles pushed together which was fine. Whilst my husband's side was ok, my side dipped in the middle through, l assume, years of use and there was very little support, l could feel the base through the mattress and l am not a large person. The bottom sheet was also ripped, stained and very old. Definitely not what you would expect from a decent hotel, or even a semi-decent one.
I'm not someone who complains but after one night of very little sleep, l spoke to Reception who told me, a little tersely, that someone would be sent to investigate and, if it couldn't be resolved we would be moved. Unfortunately, after returning late in the day, we found nobody had done anything. Housekeeping had simply made the bed without even changing the ripped sheet.
Although l didn't eat breakfast in the hotel my husband and our friends said it was particularly bad.
Add to this the generally shoddy housekeeping and need for some additional TLC l wouldn't recommend this hotel and won't be back. I would also think twice about staying in another Novotel if this is the standard they accept.
Gre Sur★★★★☆
The stories at the hotel, considering that it’s in the renovation phase, are impressive. However, it’s noticeable that there is a lack of routine and cohesion. That said, every staff member is definitely giving their best to showcase the hotel’s good side. The rooms are very nicely furnished, and the quality of sleep is excellent.
Breakfast delicious and a lot of choice the s la cart restaurant also way better than only average
RAMΣEΣ★★☆☆☆
The overall experience was bad. The location is probably the only positive of this hotel, along with the nice staff at the reception. The main issue I had was with the rooms and the breakfast. I informed the reception that there was this humming noise coming from my bathroom which was really loud and annoying. They changed my room, no issue there, but the humming continued in the other room too. I assumed it was from the air conditioning, but I brushed it off cause I didn’t have the energy to change rooms again. The breakfast was the worst part. Unless you want scrambled eggs made out of egg powder (which looked and tasted disgusting), you are left to COOK YOUR OWN, using a minuscule frying pan which takes 10 minutes to heat up. I normally wouldn’t complain if it wasn’t for the exorbitant price of 250€ PER NIGHT which I paid. Really bad experience, would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed at the AU SAINT ROCH Hôtel et Jardin in Paris for a few days with our two dogs and absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed – the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and very kind to our dogs as well.
Our room was spotless, cozy, and had plenty of space for the four of us. We really appreciated how quiet the hotel was, even though it’s right in the heart of Avignon. Many lovely cafés, parks, and famous sights are within walking distance, which made exploring the city super easy and enjoyable.
The AU SAINT ROCH Hôtel et Jardin is a real gem – perfect for couples traveling with dogs who still want comfort, charm, and a great location. We felt completely at home and will definitely come back!

My daughter and stayed here for glorious days. From our check-in to our check-out, the staff were very warm and welcoming. The grounds are as charming as can be and our room with the garden view was just trés marveilleux, it looked like Van Gogh's room. The location in Avignon is perfect for wandering around the city itself, with easy access to the trains, bus and Uber. It's makes for a good base to explore different parts of Provence, all within an hour or two train ride. Merci beacoup a tous to the staff et a bientôt!

Adorable small hotel, somewhere between "basic" and "shabby chic". Good location, just outside walls of old town. Simple rooms, decent bathrooms, nice small garden making everything cooler. Breakfast buffet could be a little bit more varied, but fine. Very friendly, helpful and kind owner. Would definitely choose again.

I stayed here 15+ years ago. That was a great experience. This time I found the tiny bathroom rather run down. There was also sewage odor in my room. Overall, the place still has charm (on the ground level). The staff was kind and friendly. The walls are thin, so hope your neighbors are quiet. I did not think the mattress was comfortable, but that is a matter of preference.

Very rude employee. Would not let us into the hotel until we reached in the communal waste bin in front of the building to retrieve a bottle that we threw beforehand. We didn’t know (and still doubt) that throwing an empty bottle in the mixed, unmarked garbage bin on the street in front constitutes a big problem for them. Halfway through the bin the employee changed her mind and proceeded to give us a lecture on how waste politics are the same in every country and that we should have known, even though we are also from the EU and have no trouble throwing all waste in the unmarked public garbage bins for mixed waste on the street. Only after a few minutes did the employee finally stop denying us access and let us into the hotel where we have our room. Truly unbelievable and terrible experience!

The room was small and the bathroom was very small. For myself it wasn't a major issue because I'm quite small but if you are a bigger person it could be quiet complicated. The room was very clean. You could easily hear noise in other rooms or in the hall but it was pretty quiet so no problem hear. The air-conditioning is blocked at 23°C so as it got later in the morning it became pretty hot in the room since there's a heatwave.
But what I really didn't appreciate is that I decided to spend the night at the hotel because I knew I'd finish my evening late, 4am, and I wanted to sleep in, 12 o'clock check out. However at 10 o'clock for some reason, because she must have known we hadn't checked out yet, the cleaning woman knocked on the door waking us up and then knocked on it 3 more times. I informed the reception and they said they'd get back to me on what they could do but of course never heard from them so I guess they didn't care at all.

What a wonderful little place and we were right across the street with beautiful views of the world Fortress. We had foldable bicycles and we were able to bicycle all around, which made the location of the hotel perfect. The beds were comfortable, and the kitchenette was perfect. The reception ladies were great. I had screwed the dates at reservation time but it was all fixed with a big smile. The unit was perfect and the location ideal for a waking city visit. The location is great, in front of the defensive walls of the city, and there is a splendid view from the roof terrace on the 3rd floor. The receptionist and electric maintenance deserve a 5 star review, but I can't rate that much when the cleanliness was in fact 1 star.
When I arrived, the shower hadn't been cleaned, and had a lot of hairs and other remains... BUT the worst is that when I unfolded the white linnen of the bed to get in, I saw another long hair, just there... the cleaning staff should clearly be changed. DISGUSTING

The reception is unreachable by phone, breakfast is very expensive (15€/pers) for not much, the parking lot is very expensive (17€/day) and we were told to reserve in advance, we called they never picked, got stranded with nowhere to park at night.

I stayed here for a couple of nights last month, and had on the whole a good experience! Other people here have mentioned the rules involved and fines for late checkout and not taking out the bins etc. To me, I thought the prices were so cheap that all of these things didn't really matter. Don't get me wrong, the rooms were quite tired and could have been cleaner, but for what you pay for, the location, privacy and kitchenette were fantastic!

Very beautiful hotel with friendly service! The building is quite dull looking from outside but don’t let it fool you. The courtyard is absolutely gorgeous.

Brilliant location. Used this hotel as our first stopping point on our roadtrip and it was lovely. Absolutely beautiful hotel.
Very kind staff. Super comfy bed.
My only minor complaint would be the lack of refill of food at breakfast (the hot meal, bacon for example). I did expect more to come out as we were there before 930 and breakfast ends at 10. I understand it was close to closing and quiet, but I would say it was on the more expensive side at 19 euro.
But otherwise loved our stay. Pool was also fantastic.

Very disappointing experience & the room booked was not provided
I booked an “Executive King Room with Private Patio” through Booking.com for €106.65. The private patio was one of the main reasons I chose this property.
Unfortunately, the room I received did not have a private patio at all.
The other rooms along my corridor had patios, while mine was the only one without one. I immediately went back to reception and asked to be moved to the room category I had booked, but the hotel offered no alternative and no compensation.
The problems started even before that. At check-in, I was unexpectedly asked for a €200 deposit, which had not been clearly communicated beforehand. I was also asked to sign a document in French and told that the deposit might not be returned until later that day or even the following day.
Then, the key initially did not work, so I had to return to reception again.
After discovering that I had not been given the room I had paid for, I considered cancelling the stay. However, because of the uncertainty regarding the €200 deposit, I ended up staying.
The room itself was also in very poor condition for a supposed four-star hotel: stained carpet, dust, cobwebs, spiders, signs of deterioration and scratches, and rust in the shower. I have photographs documenting these issues.
The following morning, when I tried to speak with management, I was given nothing more than the reception email address. No compensation, no refund of the difference in room category and no meaningful solution.
I travel frequently by road and stay in hotels across different European countries. I have never experienced such a combination of poor service, incorrect room allocation and poor room conditions in a hotel of this category.
I paid for an Executive King Room with Private Patio and did not receive it. I reported the issue immediately and the hotel did nothing to resolve it.
Very disappointing experience. I would not stay here again, even for free.

Lady on the counter was brilliant. The rooms however are stuck in the 70’s. Yes the 70s. Clean but soooo dated. The furniture would be out of place in a junkyard sale. And the bathroom felt like I was in an old folks home. Just a place to put your head down for the night. The price is very high for that.
Should be a third cheaper. Breakfast is ok. Staff again are great. I stayed for 1 night. Need to stay longer but got out of there and found somewhere else.

Everything was okay, if not for the woman at the reception.
I had left my electronic sigarette with a pack of sigarette in the toilettes overnight, i forgot them there, and the next morning i went to her and asked if by any chance she had found my sigarette, and she said it wasn’t her role to look through the bathroom and i should look myself.
She didn’t understand i left it there overnight and not at that moment, so as any hotel should do, if they find something ANYWHERE they should put it at the reception for the person to go there and find it back.
This shows how inconsiderate they are for people staying in their hotel.
Since they are not even checking the bathroom, are they even cleaning it????
I find it impossible for someone to have stolen my sigarette since it was night, and the morning i immediately went to check, so i wonder who took it, someone who worked there???
The woman was terrible, the man at the reception was lovely.

Good hostel, nice staff, everything was good. Also air conditioning is a plus. Shame there is no kitchen, otherwise a pleasant stay. A little fat from the city centre tho.

For me, I give 5 stars because it met and/or exceeded my expectations.
The room was exactly as described in the booking website and confirmation email.
The location suited me perfectly as I had a late night train arrival and early departure. The service on arrival was impeccable. There was a language barrier which was overcome with google translate and patience. He interacted well with my kids and they liked him
Lastly, I had low hopes for the breakfast but I was pleasantly surprised.
The greeting was friendly and the worker industrious in keeping the area clean and the juice replaced when empty. The croissants were fresh. The coffee wasn’t freshly ground, but from a machine. Still, there was no additional charge for coffee and nobody monitoring if you had more than 1. The kids could have a hit chocolate if they wanted.
In the same situation, my family would happily return.

Location:
It’s a bit removed from the city center and main tourist spots, but I actually prefer it that way. The area is quiet, uncrowded, and convenient for driving. It’s also not far from the river, so it’s a good location if you have a bike.
Room:
My room is simple but includes all the essentials. It’s well-designed, and the Wi-Fi is strong and reliable.
Service:
There’s a coffee machine available in the shared sitting/dining area, which is a nice touch. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the service.

Fantastic option: we were in a logistic trouble, and hotelF1 helped us to simplify the logistic with a very modest invest.
Insider Tips for Choosing Your Avignon Hotel
To make the most of your visit to this Provençal gem, it helps to understand the local landscape before booking. The city is divided into two distinct zones: the historic walled city (intra-muros) and the newer areas outside the ramparts. Your choice between the two will drastically change the atmosphere of your trip, from the energy of the cobblestones to the tranquility of the residential streets.
Consider the Festival Calendar. If you are visiting in July, you are likely coming for the Festival d’Avignon. During this month, the city transforms into a massive theater stage, and hotels inside the walls book out months in advance. Expect higher prices and a vibrant, noisy atmosphere. If you are not attending the festival, you may want to avoid July altogether or stay just outside the center for peace.
Don’t Fear the “Outside” Neighborhoods. While staying inside the ramparts is magical, the areas just outside, particularly near the Place Crillon or Les Angles across the river, offer excellent value. A short walk across the Pont Daladier or through the Porte de la République gives you easy access to the sights while allowing you to escape the tourist crowds at night.
Parking is a Golden Amenity. Driving into the medieval center of Avignon is notoriously difficult. Many streets are pedestrianized or restricted to local traffic. If you are on a road trip through Provence, prioritize hotels that offer private parking or valet service. The cost of parking is high, but the convenience of having your car secured nearby is worth the premium.
Look for Rooftop and Garden Spaces. The Provençal sun can be intense, especially in the summer months. After a morning of sightseeing, having a hotel with a shaded courtyard, garden, or a plunge pool is a lifesaver. These spaces offer a cool sanctuary to rest before heading out for an evening apéro.
Understand the “French” Breakfast. Many boutique hotels in Avignon offer a continental breakfast that leans heavily on pastries, bread, and coffee. If you prefer a hearty savory breakfast to start your day, check the menu or reviews beforehand. Alternatively, skip the hotel breakfast and join the locals at Les Halles market for fresh oysters and produce.
Choosing a hotel in Avignon is about balancing history with modern convenience. Whether you wake up to the chime of church bells within the ancient walls or gaze at the illuminated Papal Palace from across the river, the city leaves an indelible mark on every traveler. Take your time selecting your base, and you will be rewarded with an authentic slice of Provençal life that goes far beyond the typical tourist trail.
