12 Best Cheap Hotels in Avignon

Finding a place to stay in Avignon that balances comfort, location, and price can be a challenge, especially if you are trying to stick to a strict travel budget. The city is a major draw for tourists seeking the medieval grandeur of the Palais des Papes and the famous bridge, which often drives accommodation prices up. However, you do not have to sacrifice your savings to enjoy this Provençal gem.

The good news is that Avignon has a surprisingly diverse range of budget-friendly lodging options. From modern chain hotels on the outskirts with free parking to charming, family-run establishments just steps from the cobblestone streets of the historic center, there is something for every type of traveler. The key is knowing where to look and what trade-offs you are willing to make regarding location versus amenities.

For the purpose of this guide, we are defining "cheap" not as low quality, but as high value. We have scoured the city for hotels that offer clean, comfortable rooms, reliable service, and a price point that leaves you with more money in your pocket for museum entries and riverside dinners. Whether you are a solo backpacker, a couple on a romantic getaway, or a family passing through Provence, these options prioritize practicality without skimping on the essentials.

When selecting a budget hotel in Avignon, consider your transportation needs. If you are arriving by train, you might want to look near the Gare d’Avignon Centre to avoid dragging luggage far. However, if you are driving, staying just outside the ramparts or in the surrounding commercial areas often provides access to free parking, which is a rare and valuable commodity inside the walled city.

Many of the cheapest rooms in the city center are located in historic buildings, which means they offer immense character but sometimes lack elevators or large bathrooms. If accessibility is a concern, a modern budget hotel outside the walls might be a better fit. Conversely, if you want to wake up to the sound of church bells and walk to the market for breakfast, the intra-muros options are unbeatable.

Below, we have compiled a list of the 12 best cheap hotels in Avignon. These selections have been evaluated based on guest reviews, location, cleanliness, and the overall value they provide for the nightly rate.

Everything was okay, if not for the woman at the reception. I had left my electronic sigarette with a pack of sigarette in the toilettes overnight, i forgot them there, and the next morning i went to her and asked if by any chance she had found my sigarette, and she said it wasn’t her role to look through the bathroom and i should look myself. She didn’t understand i left it there overnight and not at that moment, so as any hotel should do, if they find something ANYWHERE they should put it at the reception for the person to go there and find it back. This shows how inconsiderate they are for people staying in their hotel. Since they are not even checking the bathroom, are they even cleaning it???? I find it impossible for someone to have stolen my sigarette since it was night, and the morning i immediately went to check, so i wonder who took it, someone who worked there??? The woman was terrible, the man at the reception was lovely.

Good hostel, nice staff, everything was good. Also air conditioning is a plus. Shame there is no kitchen, otherwise a pleasant stay. A little fat from the city centre tho.

For me, I give 5 stars because it met and/or exceeded my expectations. The room was exactly as described in the booking website and confirmation email. The location suited me perfectly as I had a late night train arrival and early departure. The service on arrival was impeccable. There was a language barrier which was overcome with google translate and patience. He interacted well with my kids and they liked him Lastly, I had low hopes for the breakfast but I was pleasantly surprised. The greeting was friendly and the worker industrious in keeping the area clean and the juice replaced when empty. The croissants were fresh. The coffee wasn’t freshly ground, but from a machine. Still, there was no additional charge for coffee and nobody monitoring if you had more than 1. The kids could have a hit chocolate if they wanted. In the same situation, my family would happily return.

Location: It’s a bit removed from the city center and main tourist spots, but I actually prefer it that way. The area is quiet, uncrowded, and convenient for driving. It’s also not far from the river, so it’s a good location if you have a bike. Room: My room is simple but includes all the essentials. It’s well-designed, and the Wi-Fi is strong and reliable. Service: There’s a coffee machine available in the shared sitting/dining area, which is a nice touch. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the service.

Fantastic option: we were in a logistic trouble, and hotelF1 helped us to simplify the logistic with a very modest invest.

We came to this hotel with our family from Spain and decided to stay here, which turned out to be a terrible mistake. We were familiar with this hotel chain before, and in other cities our experience was quite good. Unfortunately, this hotel was a nightmare. We arrived late at night and had no real opportunity to refuse the room through the administration. The room was full of mold, and only then did we discover that the entire hotel is under renovation. There was a horrible sewage smell everywhere. In the morning, while we were sleeping, construction workers broke into our room without warning. There is absolutely no sense of safety or privacy here — it is honestly frightening to stay in this hotel. These same workers, wearing dirty work clothes, also walk around the common dining area, touching bread and drinking coffee. After I reported all of this, the hotel administration accused me of lying. This was shocking and unacceptable. Never stay here. Never.
Gabriel Munteanu★☆☆☆☆
Do not come to this hotel unless you want to sleep in these tiny rooms, that not only smell, but are very dirty and uncomfortable. The false advertising is what made us choose this hotel because it looked really clean-the only thing we really sought for. In reality its the opposite which is why i recommend you choosing another hotel-if you want a decent room for your family to stay in.

If you looking for an adventure that COSTS YOU 100 EURO PER NIGHT AND WANT PEOPLE TO STEAL FROM YOU THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE. This completely RUINED my trip. Pease take my advise SERIOUSLY!! spend a few bucks more. Worth it. The rooms absolutely smell horrible and rooms are small anyways. Oohh and btw if you do want to go to this adventure DEMAND THE GUY TO WALK WITH YOU AND DO’T PAY ANYTHING!! The woman with the black hair is absolutely the sweetest, but she has the horrible guy. Hope she finds HER VOICE and please tell the guy too bigger off. HE DOES NOT BELONG IN THE HOSPITALITY WORLD. He doesn’t even look at you or answer you.

Friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are very very small, bathroom even smaller. It's good for a night, but not for a longer time...

Was there for 1 night with a group, me and 2 of my friends got a clean room with no weird smells, and there were NO bugs there! Cool right? (119 room) There were the beds, a desk, a window and some lights, we had to go downstairs to use the kettle, though the service was very nice and we easily communicated in english since im polish and i dont know french. Why 4 stars for the rooms not 5? There was too little things inside, and some of the lights werent working. Location, its 3 because we had to go 14 bus stops to just to get into 1 km radius from the tourist attractions to it. The rooms are cozy, and for a simple person who doesnt want much its perfect. One more thing, some of the AC units in other rooms were stinky, not our though. So if you need a short term stay, its good!
Aleksandra Marszalek★★★☆☆
I loved the location and the service was nice. The room itself wouldn't be too bad, bed was quite comfortable and the view was nice, but there was a ridiculously loud sound of flowing water going on all night. I tried turning the AC on and off but it didnt seem to influence it. Maybe we were unlucky and the other rooms were ok, but I would try to exchange it if you hear any noise in the first place.
Craig Gibson★★★★★
I loved this place. I wanted to spend an extended spell in the area (I spent 17 nights), so I wouldn't feel compelled to rush to see everything in 2-3 days; I wanted something moderately priced; I wanted breakfast included; and I wanted a location that though not within the medieval walls, was close enough that everything within the walls was within a 10 minute walk. Budget Ibis Avignon Centre fitted the bill. The room was bare-bones, but hey, it's a 2 star hotel. Things important to me about the room - quiet, clean, plenty of hot water, working TV - were taken care of. The bed is one of the most comfortable I've experienced. And the staff! Wonderful people, helpful, polite, all seemed to speak enough English that I could navigate - they even put up with my attempts at bad French. Unlike lots of places that advertise daily newspapers but don't actually have them, the hotel had a nice selection of reading material at the front desk. The continental breakfast was excellent: fresh baked goods, some fruit, cold cuts, jams, yogurt, cereals (muesli!), and excellent coffee machines. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Yes great location and staff nice. However make sure to get plenty of local wine into you before sleeping as the rooms are woeful. Zero noise proofing you could hear your neighbor brush their teeth it’s so bad! Not again!

I lived in this hotel when I went to Avignon, I remembered that the staff were really nice and friendly. After I backed to my country, I found that I left my AirPods at the hotel, they quickly checked the room and found it. They help me to sent my AirPods back and I have already received it, they are helpful!

It is what is is; a no-frills, convenient place for a layover. Very close to Avignon TGV (easily walkable, although some parts of the paths are not very suitcase/pushchair-friendly). Service was welcoming and friendly in the morning (we used self-service check for late arrival). Breakfast is simple but very reasonable, check out time of 11am was also appreciated. Rooms are very basic and a little worse for wear in places (paintwork, small damages), but the bed was comfortable and the shower was hot, so it met our needs as a cheap stopover before continuing our travels.
Sarah Gimurtu★☆☆☆☆
Room smelled like cigarettes. Uncomfortable beds and pillows. One big rock hard pillow for me and a small floppy one for my partner. Toilet and shower are in a tiny closet kinda like an airplane bathroom plus a shower. The water from the shower gets on the toilet. People partying until 2 am so not a restful night because the noise and thin walls. Check in kiosk is broken so we had to wait until 5 pm to check in when there was a person present. Exterior of the hotel is run down as well. Air conditioning works tho.
Wai Ng★★★★☆
1. I recommend check in since 5pm, where the reception is open. I do not understand the self check in machine at all. 2. The shower holder is broken. Other than that , the room is comfortable.

I wanted to extend my stay by a night, but they wanted 49€, and wouldn't accept my membership (their fidelity scheme, for 5% discount), even though I'd used it for the previous 2 nights. If I want the online price of 42€68 (including the 5% discount), I must check out at 11am, and back in at 2pm (which incurs extra cleaning and laundry costs for them). Very stupid, instead I'm going to a hotel where my custom is valued!

Becouse of from street noise we dont sleep all night, thats a bigest problem. 1 night is cheaper than dinner for 1 person si dont expect nothing, shower smell bad, some dirt under the bed ... well never more. But for low budget traveler it might have some pozitives

I rated this based on what it offers: for a cheap hotel, it was very good. Much better than you would get for similarly priced hotels in the US. Helpful staff, fantastic location. The room was simple but fine. Everything you needed. Most importantly, given the bedbug epidemic in France - no bugs!
Christian Reich★★★★☆
I was satisified with the room. It was comfortable and clean, the bathroom was good. The pillow is a bit too big to sleep on and it's not perfectly insulated from noise but overall it was a great stay. The personnel was very friendly. Location is top.
Lawyer Bodoh★☆☆☆☆
Book only if desperate. The hotel needs a deep deep clean, and a bed bug de-infestation; our room had holes in its wall, which the management had “cleverly” tried to camouflage by placing furniture over them. The walls were paper thin and you could guess one’s neighbor TV show while at the same time guessing what temperature the neighbor’s AC is blasting at. It’s a hotel though; you have a room and a bed, and you can sleep there, among bed bugs.
Martin Lassen Lindstrøm★★☆☆☆
Cheap or not, I probably wouldn't have made the booking today. I am not sure if it was actually a hotel or also doubled as a dormitory? There was an odour of oil and garage in the corridors. Bedsheets seemed clean, but found black marks in one of the corners. The room itself was very basic - bed, table, closet and a zink. There were bedlights, but they appeared to only have a decorative function, cause despite close examination and trying every switch in the room I couldn't turn them on, leaving me with the overhead light and a light above the zink. The toilet in the corridor could use a proper cleaning. The shower was also in the corridor - on third, whereas I was staying on first, and there was only one shower, though I have no idea how many rooms we were sharing it. The two showers I had, I only had cold water, which I didn't expect on a hotel in Western Europe in 2018. And no lights in the shower cabin. At least I know where everything is. I will though give points for finding the bed quite comfortable, despite having wobbly legs. Location is central in Avignon - 2 min from the station and 5-8 min from the Palais des Papes. And I liked the staff who seemed smiling and friendly.

I stayed here with my partner. The room was very small and cluttered, with one small window for fresh air and a tiny single sink (see photos). It hadn't been renovated in decades and was not clean: the mattress was dirty (see photos), the shower was dirty—nothing was clean. We were given only one tiny bar of soap (see photos) to wash ourselves. The mattress was old and uncomfortable, and I returned home with severe back pain. The booking included one breakfast, which was for me. On the first morning, the owner insisted that my room did not include breakfast and asked me to pay €12 to eat in a very depressing dining room. I had breakfast elsewhere for cheaper. The next day I did receive my breakfast, but we were never compensated for the first day. To conclude: if you're on vacation, this place could completely ruin it. You're better off spending one less night in beautiful Avignon and booking a better hotel.

Very very basic room. 3 person room was very cramped and bathroom tiny. Very dated feel throughout the hotel. Good location for the town. Would only recomend for location and if you are on a budget.

I recently stayed at Hotel Mignon in Avignon during my trip through France and it was a truly wonderful experience. The stay was very comfortable, the atmosphere was peaceful, and everything was perfectly clean and well maintained. One of the highlights was definitely the food — everything was absolutely delicious, and the coffee was exceptional. All the staff were incredibly kind and attentive, always ready to help with a smile. I felt warmly welcomed from the very beginning, which made my stay even more enjoyable. The location of the hotel was also great, perfect for exploring the city on foot and enjoying its historic charm and relaxed vibe. It was an unforgettable experience, and I truly hope to come back to this beautiful place soon!

The hotel is more like a motel. However, don’t be put off by this as it’s actually really decent. The aircon is strong and there’s 2 doors to keep the noise out. The space in the room is big enough for 2 luggages to be opened. The only downside is if you’re staying upstairs, you’ll need to carry your luggage up the stairs as there are no lifts. You can also hear people stomp upstairs and it might not be the best for you if you’re a light sleeper. Overall a pleasant stay.
Christoph Schmucki★★☆☆☆
You need more than a bit of fresh paint to make a Hotel out of a Motel. Doesn't deserve the B&B stamp. Dirty bathrooms (calc, mold and hair) and worst breakfast ever (bread 2 days old, butter frozen, OJ sour).
D J★☆☆☆☆
I would give a negative rating for this hotel if it were possible. The rooms are small and walls are paper thin. Can hear everything going on around. If that wasn’t bad enough the service is absolutely disgusting. The blond woman in reception/dining is such a rude animal. I hated this place. My advice? Stay somewhere worse, you will have a better experience.
Jiras Goldnike★★★☆☆
The hotel used be for short sleeping ok. But if you expect good service and 5 star breakfast, you won't get it.
Brett Riddle★☆☆☆☆
The only redeeming feature of this smoke infested (elevator-less) hell hole is the fact it has a kettle. You do not have enough room to swing a cat and if you do work up the courage to try a breakfast in the restaurant, the staff hover around like detectives (or Gendamerie), give it a big miss!

What a wonderful little place and we were right across the street with beautiful views of the world Fortress. We had foldable bicycles and we were able to bicycle all around, which made the location of the hotel perfect. The beds were comfortable, and the kitchenette was perfect. They’re actually is a door that pulls and shuts between the little kitchen and the bedroom for privacy when needed. I would recommend staying here. You can even use the rooftop to enjoy the views.
Marc Bisson★★★★★
The reception ladies were great. I had screwed the dates at reservation time but it was all fixed with a big smile. The unit was perfect and the location ideal for a waking city visit. We had a great time there and the price was correct so really it was a very good experience. We only wished we would have had the time to stay a bit longer.
Deeper NATURE★★★☆☆
The location is great, in front of the defensive walls of the city, and there is a splendid view from the roof terrace on the 3rd floor. The receptionist and electric maintenance deserve a 5 star review, but I can't rate that much when the cleanliness was in fact 1 star. When I arrived, the shower hadn't been cleaned, and had a lot of hairs and other remains... BUT the worst is that when I unfolded the white linnen of the bed to get in, I saw another long hair, just there... the cleaning staff should clearly be changed. DISGUSTING
Q L★★★☆☆
The reception is unreachable by phone, breakfast is very expensive (15€/pers) for not much, the parking lot is very expensive (17€/day) and we were told to reserve in advance, we called they never picked, got stranded with nowhere to park at night.
darci★★★★☆
I stayed here for a couple of nights last month, and had on the whole a good experience! Other people here have mentioned the rules involved and fines for late checkout and not taking out the bins etc. To me, I thought the prices were so cheap that all of these things didn't really matter. Don't get me wrong, the rooms were quite tired and could have been cleaner, but for what you pay for, the location, privacy and kitchenette were fantastic!

Recommended hotel. Firstly, the staff are very polite and very helpful. Answered to our request with questions. And they allow late check in too. The rooms are pretty good too. The loft is quite hot during July period as the air conditioning was unable to circulate the cold air to the loft. So that is a point to consider. Breakfast is included. Pretty basic breakfast but we appreciate it.

For it being a 3 star Hotel it's an absolute disgrace, the rooms are cleaned really poorly and its a technical and electrical disaster. To our Problems, our Keycard didn't work, the Toilet had a loose screw, some lights didn't work and the breakfast was lower than average. Apart from this in some other rooms some bedsheets we're missing, flushing the toilet did not work properly and the toilet in general was really dirty to the point of it being moldy. Very dissappointing.
Collyer Burbach★☆☆☆☆
Horrible stay. Fortunately only one night as part of a tour group. Rooms were not very clean, dead bugs on the bathroom floor, hair in the sheets. One of our group members had a double booked room. Another member had a bunk bed with a broken railing = dangerous. Beds were not very comfortable either.

I had a one night stay at the Hotel Cristol. The rooms were pleasant, with very welcome air conditioning. Though they were a little small, and would have been very cramped with more than 2 people, it was perfect for a one night so over with 2 people.

*Edited and give 3 stars for a kind lady from Breakfast reception. She deserves more understanding. No one speaks English here. Hair dryer can’t be borrowed, I was told that it could be stolen, ok, then I wanted to borrow a cup from reception, was told the same reason (What, a cup?? Yes!). I’m B&B Member and I can tell this is the very first time I was treated like that since 3 years. Ridiculous. Really need to reconsider if membership is necessary next year. I don’t know how the people behave themselves in Avignon but even a cup from B&B can be stolen is really crazy. Not my opinion but the feeling delivered by your crew. I fancy the French culture.

Good stay, great breakfast! Only downside was that the room temperature was way too hot for me, it was hard to sleep and the windows don't really open on the outside so hard to get a bit of fresh air in. I don't want to have to put the AC on when it's cold outside :/ Other than that, good experience: lovely staff, lovely setting although it's near the highway, and I have to mention the breakfast again 😉

The hotel looks super nice and clean on the pictures but it is very missleading. Its not a hotel, it is a motel (cheap and dirty). The bed was wobbely, the toilet wasn’t clean and smelled like urin, no glasses in the room, just papercups, room smelly in general. Super cheaply built. If you are looking for a quick solution for one night and dont expect too much it is fine and close to the highway. If you think you’ll be staying in a nice spa hotel and will be cozy - look for sth else. They just paid a lot for marketing…

Perfect location for a nights stopover from motorway. Staff are very welcoming, friendly, and helpful and go above and beyond. Food was nice, starters and dessert were buffet style with the main being served to the table. Breakfast was buffet but personally have had a lot better elsewhere although there was enough to chose from. There are plenty of places nearby to eat should you choose not to eat onsite. The outside areas were pretty with seating and vines. Rooms i thought were tired and could do with updating, however they had everything in them you need and we had a comfy 2 nights stay. Due to the location of this hotel it maybe noisy on a weekdays (we stayed Saturday and Sunday with no problems)

our last stopover the evening before we arrived at our holiday destination in the South of France. On arrival we found a great hotel. After we checked in after a long journey we went to our room (2 floors duplex). Unfortunately, we found that the air conditioning on the top floor did not work. it had been a day with high temperatures (34 degrees celcius). During dinner we reported the defect to the reception. the manager went with us to see if it could be solved but unfortunately this was not the case. She went to see if she could arrange another mechanic. When we still hadn't heard anything at 22:00, I send a message to reception and went back to the reception to get an update and ask for a ventilator. They didnt have any! We had a terrible night and hardly slept. Next morning during checkout we hot the message that we didn’t have to pay the drinks at diner (€46,-). Keep in mind that we spend € 319 so we got a discount of 14%. even when we indicated that we did not find this compensation reasonable for the inconvenience, the staff was not reasonable a good hotel distinguishes itself in offering service and solving problems if they arise. This hotel clearly failed to do that. we arrived exhausted at our holiday destination with 2 young children. *Update on reply staff of the hotel*; you say you don’t everything to improve. No you don’t (that’s the problem). You had the possibility to create an ambassador if you solved the issue in a good way directly. You didn’t. And now you reply with your standard reply on reviews. ‘Thanks for your review. We do everything to improve… blabla’.

Tips for Booking a Cheap Hotel in Avignon

Finding a great deal requires a bit of strategy and flexibility. The price of accommodation in Avignon fluctuates wildly depending on the time of year, local events, and how far in advance you are booking. Here are a few essential tips to help you secure the best possible rate while ensuring your stay is comfortable and stress-free.

1. Avoid the Festival Season (Unless You Are Going for It)
The Avignon Festival in July transforms the city into a massive theatrical stage, but it also sends hotel prices skyrocketing. If your goal is a cheap stay, avoid July entirely. The shoulder seasons of April to June and September to October offer lovely weather, fewer crowds, and significantly lower room rates.

2. Understand the Geography of the City
Avignon is divided into the "Intra-Muros" (inside the walls) and the areas outside. Staying inside the walls is magical, but you often pay a premium for it, and parking is a nightmare. Staying just outside, particularly near the train station or in the Les Angles area across the river, can cut your nightly rate by 30% to 50% while remaining within a 15-minute walk of the center.

3. Book Directly with the Hotel
While third-party booking sites are great for research, many small, independent hotels in Avignon offer discounts or free breakfast if you book directly through their website or by phone. It costs you nothing to send an email asking if they can beat the online rate, and it often results in a better deal or an upgraded room.

4. Factor in the Cost of Breakfast
A hotel room might seem cheap, but if breakfast costs €12 to €15 per person, the savings disappear quickly. Budget hotels often offer basic breakfasts, but you can save money by skipping the hotel meal and grabbing a croissant and coffee at a local boulangerie for a fraction of the price. Always check if breakfast is included in the rate or if it is an add-on.

5. Check for Hidden Fees (Tourist Tax and Parking)
In France, the "taxe de séjour" (tourist tax) is usually not included in the advertised room rate and is charged per person, per night. Additionally, if you are driving, confirm whether parking is truly free or if there is a daily garage fee. Some cheap hotels outside the center offer free parking, while those inside the walls may charge €15 to €20 a day for a secure spot.

6. Travel During the Week
Avignon is a popular weekend getaway destination for French travelers from Paris and Lyon. Consequently, room rates for Friday and Saturday nights are often much higher than Sunday through Thursday. If your itinerary allows, scheduling your visit to include a Sunday or Monday night can unlock the lowest rates of the week.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can navigate the Avignon hotel market like a pro. The city is incredibly walkable, so even if you choose a hotel slightly off the beaten path, you will find that the historic center is never too far away.

Ultimately, a trip to Avignon is about the experience: the light reflecting off the Rhône, the scent of lavender in the markets, and the echoes of history in the narrow streets. By choosing a budget-friendly hotel, you ensure that you can spend your travel funds on creating memories rather than just paying for a place to sleep. Safe travels!
