15 Best Traditional French Restaurants in Lyon

Lyon wears its title as France’s gastronomic capital with quiet confidence. In a city where the bouchon is a cultural institution and the market stalls groan under the weight of local cheese and charcuterie, finding a truly traditional meal is less about hunting and more about choosing wisely.

The best tables here are often the most unassuming, tucked into traboules or perched on the slopes of Croix-Rousse, where recipes have been passed down through generations without much fuss or fanfare. The soul of Lyonnaise cooking lies in its generosity and its respect for humble ingredients.

Dishes like quenelles de brochet, tablier de sapeur, and cervelle de canut are not relics of a bygone era but living traditions served with pride. A proper traditional restaurant in Lyon will offer you a menu that reads like a love letter to the terroir, with wines from nearby Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône poured without pretension.

For visitors, the challenge is separating the genuine article from the tourist-friendly imitation. The city is full of places that serve a decent salade lyonnaise, but only a handful maintain the rigorous standards of a true bouchon or a family-run institution that has anchored a neighbourhood for decades.

The best of them share common traits: a short menu that changes with the seasons, a dining room that favours warmth over minimalism, and a clientele that includes as many locals as out-of-towners. The following selection focuses on establishments that honour Lyon’s culinary heritage without turning it into a museum piece.

You will find classic bouchons with checked tablecloths and zinc counters, as well as more refined dining rooms where the cuisine is rooted in tradition but executed with contemporary precision. Each restaurant listed here has earned its reputation through consistency, a deep understanding of regional products, and an unwavering commitment to hospitality.

Whether you are planning your first visit to Lyon or returning to explore the city’s food scene more deeply, this guide will help you navigate the essential addresses. Keep in mind that reservations are strongly recommended, especially for lunch on weekdays and dinner from Thursday through Saturday, when the most sought-after tables fill up quickly with both business diners and families celebrating special occasions.

The restaurants below represent the very best of traditional French dining in Lyon, chosen for their authenticity, quality of ingredients, and the distinct character of their kitchens.

Nice atmosphere, friendly service, and fair prices. I ordered the traditional pike quenelle, which unfortunately wasn’t to my taste, but that’s more about my personal preference than the restaurant itself. The other two plates were tasty. I’d happily come back to try one of the meat dishes next time.

Great first Bouchon experience. The servers were friendly and were able to speak in French and English with us. The food is really heavy so we walked away with full stomachs. We had the 34,50€ meal each with sparkling water (5€) which came with an appetizer, main, and dessert. For the appetizers we tried the beef tongue salad which was AMAZING, and the pâté croûte which tasted good but the texture was on the drier side and the crust was okay. We ordered Quenelle Lyonnaise (pike fish soufflé in lobster sauce with rice) each. The sauce was rich in texture and flavour but the soufflé was soft and light, which was a great contrast. The brown parts on the edge tasted so good when mixed into the sauce. It was also great for dipping bread into. Dessert was the ganache and classic praline tart. They both tasted great, though the praline tart was suuuper sweet. Overall had a great time. Definitely make reservations as it was packed full at opening.

We went here for our final meal during a two-week trip to Lyon. It was the third bouchon we tried while in the area, and the food was really good. As we had read beforehand, it's not necessarily a traditional bouchon, but rather a more contemporary take on the concept. The restaurant was small and busy, with a surprising number of families and children, which gave it a lively atmosphere. I ordered the grilled pork, along with the basil and zucchini soup and a rice pudding-style dessert. All three were really good. The portions were a little smaller than at some of the other bouchons and bistros we visited over the previous two weeks, but the quality of the food was excellent. The servers were very friendly and accommodating, especially as I tried to speak French. They were encouraging and patient, which I really appreciated. They were also very attentive to food allergies, answered all of our questions, and were happy to make accommodations where needed, which was thoughtful and reassuring.

Omg. We have been in France for a month and this was the best meal yet. Life changing chicken and when zucchini can be as interesting as tomatoes in gazpacho you have a win. 1000/10

We went twice in a row for dinner and were amazed by the very fine interpretation of the local dishes. The staff was super nice and very helpful. Looking forward to going back next time we're in Lyon.

Before our trip to Lyon, I spent quite a bit of time researching local restaurants and menus, and this was one of the the places on my list. We visited on our first day, and it was absolutely worth it! It’s best to make a reservation, as there’s usually a queue, although it moves fairly quickly if you decide to wait. We tried several traditional Lyonnaise dishes, including quenelle, andouillette, cervelle de canut, and the Lyonnaise salad, and everything was delicious. The atmosphere was wonderful, the food was authentic, the staff were very friendly, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. Easily one of the best dining experiences we had in Lyon !!

At 44 Rue Saint-Jean, Le Vieux Lyon brings the bouchon meal into a house that still shows the depth of Saint-Jean. Behind the restaurant frontage is a protected building formed from two older homes, with small courtyards, spiral stair towers, medieval cellar masonry and a restored façade of mullions, transoms and limewash. The menu stays close to the old Lyonnais repertoire: quenelle de brochet with écrevisses sauce, tablier de sapeur, tête de veau, saucisson chaud, andouillette and tarte aux pralines. That breadth gives the meal its character. The salade lyonnaise had the right warm, rustic balance of crisp leaves, lardons, croutons, poached egg and bright dressing. The quenelle was the clearest anchor: a large browned oval, soft and pale inside, set in a crayfish sauce with enough body to carry the dish. The praline tart closed the meal with colour, gloss and sweetness still firmly tied to Lyon. This could well be one of your best dining memories in Lyon.

We arrived at noon and chose a nice outdoor table at this restaurant tucked among so many with outside tables on both sides of the walkway of Rue Saint-Jean. Our server, Johann, was attentive and informative as we perused the menu. We decided on the Le Menu Lyonnais as well as a Salade Lyonnaise, along with a very nice bottle of Gigondas (one of our favorites wines back in the States). The service was prompt and the food absolutely delicious. As part of the Menu Lyonnais, my husband had the sausage in brioche with green salad as a starter and the chicken supreme with porcini mushroom sauce and homemade fries. SOO tasty!! I chose the Salade Lyonnaise, because one cannot come to Lyon without eating their famous salad. Absolutely delicious!! While the initial size seemed overwhelming, in true French fashion we took our time, and both finished everything. Le Vieux Lyon…another delicious restaurant in Lyon which came recommended by Les Frenchies! All in all, a beautiful day outdoors with a tasty meal and wine! We would highly recommend Le Vieux Lyon! PS, They have the quaintest women’s restroom but be sure to duck if you are tall!!

Le Vieux Lyon Restaurant is located at 44 rue Saint-Jean, in a charming pedestrian street, and offers an authentic experience of traditional Lyonnais gastronomy. The restaurant features a few outdoor tables in front of the establishment and two dining rooms inside: one in the basement, ideal for discretion and tranquility, and another on the ground floor, beautifully decorated with various historical portrait paintings and a large wall fresco. A special mention goes to the restroom, which is truly unique. Its entrance door is only 1.60 meters high and shaped like an arch, creating a very original atmosphere. Once inside, the typical Lyonnais wall and floor tiles wonderfully enhance the charm of the place. Saint-Jean Parking is only a 200-meter walk along the riverbank, with a very reasonable flat rate of €3 for the whole night. Whether for lunch or dinner, it is highly recommended to make a reservation in advance. The welcome and service are impeccable, with extremely friendly and attentive staff. At the end of our meal, the manager kindly took the time to briefly explain the history behind the portraits displayed in the dining room, which was a real privilege. With a set menu priced at only €32, you'll definitely struggle to finish all the dishes up to dessert. The food is entirely homemade, authentically Lyonnais, and prepared with carefully selected fresh ingredients. Without hesitation, we will return and highly recommend this restaurant

A lovely spot right in the heart of the old town! Le Vieux Lyon has a charming, ancient style that perfectly matches the historic surroundings. The atmosphere feels authentic and welcoming, with attentive service and friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The food was good overall, and we especially enjoyed the ravioli — definitely a highlight of the meal. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant tends to fill up quickly, especially in the evenings. A great place to experience classic French cuisine in an old-town setting!

The authentic ambiance looks great, and the service is friendly. I like the greeting with the complimentary deli dish. Then, I got 2 cheeses, cervelle de canut and saint Marcelline, they were both very tasty. Then trout with leek and other vegetables was great. The desserts weren't as impressive. I also liked the half bottle wine and the bread.overall, it was a pleasant visit.

An excellent restaurant. We each ordered a starter and a main course for lunch, and everything was delicious and very well executed. The wines were a great match for the meal, and the herbal digestif at the end was a fantastic finishing touch. Our server was very friendly, and the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. We had a wonderful lunch.

This was the first place I went to after I arrived in Lyon, and im so glad I did! The food was amazing, great price-quality,nice and quiet atmosphere, but the best was Alain, he gave such an excellent service, he was so kind and so helpful, even helped me with some recommendations of activities and places to visit in Lyon! If you read this, thank you so much Alain! I 100% recommend this place!

I went to lunch there June 25, 2026 and the food was to die for. I ordered 2 appetizers and the plat du jour which was carpaccio de boeuf. The pâté en croute was the best I had in a very long time with foie gras inside and the onion jam that comes with it is amazing . If you have to try one dish there, I would go for that. I also had tatin de pieds de cochon et escargots persillés which was also really good.
Jonathan Chew★★★★★
A nice restaurant serving local fare. About €20 per main with the option to have a set at €32 which includes an additional starter and dessert – essentially you're getting a dessert for free with the set, since the starters average about €12. Fantastic food that was bursting with flavour, and we ordered a variety to share. An easy first place would be the pork tenderloin, which was tasty and multi-layered in flavour. The food can take quite a while to arrive however, which may also just be a norm based on local culture.

Great local bouchon! I loved the service, the atmosphere and the prices. The food was good… maybe not excellent but still good. Wine was excellent tho! The staff was very helpful, kind and attentive. Location and atmosphere were great!

It’s the best meal I had in Lyon! Every dish has it’s uniqueness, with complex flavor, texture and amazing scent! I ordered the chicken liver, pork in set. They are both AMAZING! And the waitress is super kind, also checking if I need anything, when she recommends a dessert that I don’t know, she searched it on her phone and show it to me to make sure I know what’s that. In every aspect this restaurant deserves 5 stars, make sure you had reservation in advance!

This was the second bouchon I visited in Lyon. Although I had positive experience with the first one that I visited, this restaurant was even better. I went for dinner in a group of ten people, and the service was good and quick. I started with their apertif du maison, which was fizzy, fruity, and refreshing, followed by some fresh bread and slices of rosette sausage which we did not order but were included anyway. I ordered the foie gras on artichoke heart for my starter, which was so savory, creamy, smooth, and satisfying. For the main, I had the quenelle with the sauce crevette (shrimp), which had a very rich, fresh shellfish flavor. I loved it. Dessert was a praline tart, which was slightly fruity and very, very sweet (as expected). The bread on the table was also constantly replenished, which was helpful for soaking up the remnants of the rich sauces that was left on my plates. The atmosphere was casual but neat and cozy, and while I'm not sure they had AC they had fans going which helped cool the dining room during the terrible heat wave outside. American Express was accepted for payment.

Our third Bouchon de Lyon chosen on good reviews. Welcomed as the door opened at 7:30. Soon filled up with only a few tables left. Quiet and a good atmosphere. Special was guinea fowl leg in a green pepper sauce with baby potatoes. I started with terrine of chicken liver. Dessert was a delicious pannacotta with cherries. Drank a nice Beaujolais. My partner ate aubergine gratin which was delicious, hot and a generous size.

Had an incredible time there! We had made a reservation a few days in advance, and upon our arrival, our table was ready for us. Every dish we tried was delicious, but my favourite was the praline pie - it was to die for. Many thanks also for the birthday surprise: I mentioned it in my reservation and they brought it to life. Much appreciated!

Le Bouchon Des Filles, first of all, was amazing. They do an interesting service where they invite a wave of people at different times in the evening - all the seats are set at the same time. The food was incredible and very reasonably priced, the service staff recommended great wines to pair, and the atmosphere was one where I met the people next to me and had a great conversation. Would come back!

Wow! What an experience. On our first night in Lyon, we stumbled upon this bouchon. It was not on our radar, and we were very lucky that they were able to seat us. I enjoyed the set menu, because as a little bit less of an adventurous eater, it got me out of my comfort zone. We began with the 3 set starters (a herring dish, local sausage and a lentil salad). This was followed by a chilled creamy zucchini soup which was wonderful in the heat. For our mains, my husband chose the red mullet quenelle and I had steak in a garlic sauce with potatoes. For the cheese course, I had the local St. Marcelin and he had the herby, softer one. Finally, we finished with dessert. I had the frozen praline dessert and he had the lemon custard (very tart and delicious). One of the best meals of our honeymoon by far, a great experience!
Stephanie Kay★★★★★
Lovely restaurant with delicious food! Offer a classic experience, the menu includes a mixture of selections and set items. The staff is very friendly and the portions are very generous.
Onur Tütüncü★★★★☆
I don’t usually leave reviews, but this place felt genuinely warm and sincere. It seems like they’re a bit away from their old peak, and there’s a sense of hustle inside to win that back. The starters are nice, though slightly forced. The main dishes, however, are crafted with real care. And the dessert is the final highlight. If they ease off the rush a little and focus more on flavor, they could easily become one of Michelin’s strongest contenders again.
Julie Knott★★★★☆
This was our first bouchon experience & probably our last. The wooden beams & decor lent itself to a cozy space. The service was attentive. The food was just not to our liking. My partner's flank steak was a bit stringy & the sauce not to his liking. My quenelle was just too much of a weird texture & taste for my palette. We skipped the rest of the 2 courses & to their merit they did not charge us for the wine out of concern for our disappointment.

If you only visit one traditional bouchon in Lyon, then make it Chabert. To start, the food is delicious. On top of that, the space is cosy and convivial and feels frozen in a more welcoming time. The value for money is incredible (I think the menu was 39 euro) and if you leave hungry then you've failed miserably. I'd almost say it's not possible. We had the most amazingly friendly and considerate service, and made a new friend as we were seated at a communial table. I think you could easily manage here without a knowledge of French, but as with everywhere in the country knowing even a little helps unlock more opportunity. We went for lunch and the main I selected was a veal sweetbread with morels in an insanely rich and delicious brown-butter sauce. It was 25 euros upcharge but worth every penny. We had such a good time that we were literally the last people to leave, but the server (who I think was also the owner) chatted with us as he cleaned up and never made us feel like we were overstaying our welcome. I'd give this place a sixth star if that were possible. The best part is, we ended up here almost accidentally as we got caught in a rain storm and took shelter under the awning of the entrance and noticed that the place was recommended by the Society of Bon Vivants. I don't know who they are but it piqued our interest and I'm glad we decided to investigate. Hidden gem is a stupid and overused expression these days, but I never saw this place on any "best of" lists in all of my research, so I'd say in this case it qualifies.

Lunch at Bouchon Comptoir Chabert sealed the deal: Rosette de Lyon to start, then Quenelle drowning in sauce nantua and Langue de bœuf sauce piquante, all with their unlimited starters & desserts. Generous hospitality! The homey atmosphere, service as well as Lyonnaise cuisine were fantastic. Rolled out of there so full I had to skip dinner entirely. Lyon is the city gets called France’s food capital for a reason. If you have only a day in Lyon for Bouchon experience, please bookmark this restaurant.
Marc Chankar Stoll★★★★★
If you want to experience a real Lyonnais bouchon, this is the place. As a visitor, I absolutely loved the concept. It’s the perfect opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and try traditional Lyon specialties like pig’s feet salad or pig snout salad. Large bowls of homemade dishes are passed around the table, and you share them with the people sitting next to you. It creates a warm, communal atmosphere where everyone enjoys good food together. Don’t be surprised if you end up chatting with complete strangers. That’s part of what makes this place so unique. Everything we tried was delicious. The homemade salads, local specialties, cheese, and desserts were all fantastic. The rice pudding and the floating island were the perfect ending to an amazing meal. What made the experience even more memorable was the incredible hospitality. Everyone made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived. Our son had the biggest smile on his face the entire time. One of the waiters even gave him a Comptoir Chabert cap as a gift, and he absolutely loved it. It’s rare to find a restaurant where children are treated with so much kindness and warmth. This is much more than a restaurant. It’s an authentic Lyon experience that brings people together. If you’re visiting Lyon, don’t miss it.

Unlimited appetizers are great, at least the first four, last three were just ok. But the mains are underwhelming, my friend ordered a local saucisson dish and it was a sad slice of 2 sausages drenched in gravy and can’t even find the sausages, desserts are ok but not notable. Service was great though, they are attentive and nice!

This was one of the three bouchons we visited while staying in Lyon for two weeks, and wow, were we impressed. The restaurant is quite small, so I'd definitely recommend booking well in advance. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to come back a second time, but when we tried to book again just a few days later, it was already full. That alone says a lot about how much we liked it and how popular they are. The décor is charming and cozy, and the food was unbelievable. It was easily one of the best meals we had during our two weeks in Lyon. The quenelle was amazing. The accompanying root vegetables and onions were flavorful, buttery, and perfectly seasoned. The crème brûlée was excellent, the bread was fantastic, and the carrot soup with citrus was unimaginably good. The two servers who looked after us were incredibly charming, funny, warm, and welcoming. I mentioned that this was a good opportunity for me to practice my French, and they never let me forget it. They would joke around and make playful comments in French to see if I understood what they were saying, which made the whole experience even more memorable. About half of the people in the restaurant seemed to be speaking English, so they can certainly accommodate visitors who don't speak French. That said, they were also wonderfully encouraging when I tried to speak French. This was definitely one of the standout experiences of our entire two weeks in Lyon. I would absolutely recommend coming here for dinner!

We enjoyed our meal at Le Musée! The staff was cool and we had a good time chatting with the people sitting near us. Sausage in brioche was a highlight, as was the fish of the day. Half-and-half dessert was a good combo. Glad we dined here!

Just amazing. The food is simply delicious, there’s not much to say. The whole place, from the dishes to the staff, exudes a warm and caring soul. The gateau with chicken liver is something I will remember for a very very long time. You simply cannot miss this if U’re in lyon (Also quite cheap)

We had an amazing dinner here! The food was delicious, the service was great, and the vibe of the restaurant is really unique. I truly enjoyed the whole experience. The only small thing to mention is that we were charged a $6 tax for two people at the end of the meal. I wasn't sure what it was for, so just a heads-up to other diners to CHECK YOUR BILL. Aside from that, it was a wonderful evening!

Absolutely amazing food. We had the quenelle and it was soft while the lobster sauce was rich and creamy. We also had the andouillette and for me, who likes to eat small intestine, it was perfect. The server was very patient and friendly, and also recommended a bakery for us to try a praline brioche. I wish we could eat here again during our stay

Absolutely perfect! this charming bouchon is an absolute must-visit. From the moment we walked in, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home, but the food truly took center stage. Every single dish was outstanding, everything was cooked to perfection, packed with rich flavor, and beautifully presented, my choice was a steak that was in perfect point. It was, without a doubt, one of the best dining experiences we had in the city.

Tasty food - the quenelle was excellent! Service was slow and there wasn’t much attention to the table. The room is wonderful in a fine old building. Prices are very reasonable. On a very hot day the room was stuffy without air movement but that is seasonal

Overall the food is ok not bad yet it does not give me any wow factor. The service was rather slow. And the place is too cramped. Often the waiter or waitress has to squeeze between the tables and kinda of uncomfortable.

This is one of the buchons establishment we booked after doing quite a lot of research & were totally blown away both for taste of the dishes, varieties of ingredients as well as service. The buchon had a quaint menu which didn’t just describe the dishes in English, but also taught tourists how to pronounce them. I found it hilarious but also heartened by the dedication the restaurant had. Last but not least we were impressed with how generous they treat their clients as we had ordered one portion of salad but they still came out with all of the 7 or so varieties in large serving bowls. We thought we would definitely be charged for 4 portions in the event but they had proved us wrong. I believe this was the tradition & spirit of buchons but it’s nice to witness it in person. To return their generosity we tipped the attentive waitress a good tip even though we knew that’s not expected in the country.

I really like the atmosphere of the restaurant and the friendliness of everyone who serves their guests. The menu of this restaurant offers typical Lyon dishes and what I am very impressed with the service of this restaurant when I was confused to choose a dessert and asked for recommendations I was served a variety of three types of typical Lyon cheese which were very delicious even though I am not a fan of cheese and delicious creme caramel maison then given 1 additional portion for free. Thank you Le Garet and keep up your hospitality.

Traditional Lyon cuisine that is hard to find and very comforting if you’re open to it. I tried the veal head which was succulent and tender, cooked to perfection. Portions are a good size so save room for deserts. Chef was friendly and helpful throughout the experience. Atmosphere is homely. We ate quite a lot there and you probably can’t go wrong with their specials and standard menu. Recommended to make a reservation. Places like this need to be treasured while they are still around.

Exceptionally warm and attentive service that felt genuine— from everybody in the restaurant. The art of anticipation. A cozy setting with a neighborhood feel, love the pork cracklings to begin and charming embroidered napkins. My only note is that I found the baba au rhum far too strong, with dry brioche— not pleasant. Would absolutely recommend.

It has a lively atmosphere, a bit loud and very local in style. The food is classic Lyonnaise, hearty and straightforward. Not fine dining at all, just an old-school city spot where you eat properly.

If you are looking for a true, authentic bouchon Lyonnais experience, look no further than L'Auberge des Canuts. We stopped here for lunch and it was absolutely spectacular from start to finish. The atmosphere immediately transports you—it is warm, welcoming, and bursting with traditional Lyonnais charm. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. As for the food, every dish was a masterpiece of classic regional cuisine. Rich, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully prepared, it delivered exactly the comforting, authentic flavors we were hoping to find in Lyon. Sitting inside and enjoying the meal with a view of the nearby cathedral just made the entire experience unforgettable. It is the perfect spot for an exceptional lunch. We will definitely be back!

We had lunch at Auberge des Canuts – Bouchon Lyonnais, just a short walk from the Cathedral Saint‑Jean Baptiste, and it turned out to be one of the best meals we had in Lyon. The restaurant has that authentic bouchon charm - cozy, classic decoration with wooden furniture, warm lighting, and the delicious smell of traditional Lyonnaise cooking drifting from the kitchen. The food was excellent. Everything tasted homemade and full of flavor, exactly what you expect from a true bouchon. We tried a couple of local dishes, including the onion soup, and each one was rich and hearty, with generous portions but not too heavy. The meat was perfectly tender, and the sauces had that slow-cooked depth that makes Lyon’s cuisine so special. The service was friendly and efficient. There was just a small wait for a table when we arrived. Prices aren’t cheap, but the quality and atmosphere absolutely justify it. This is a great spot for anyone wanting to experience real Lyonnaise food in a warm, authentic setting. Highly recommended.

Incredible location and very tasty food. Among other dishes, we ordered a cheese platter. We couldn’t finish everything because the portions were really generous, so we asked to have the cheese platter packed to go. However, the waitress simply threw away one type of cheese, saying that it didn’t fit into the container. We ordered a variety of cheeses specifically to try different flavors, so this situation left an unpleasant impression. The waitress could have warned us about her intention to throw the cheese away before doing so — we would have appreciated the chance to decide ourselves how to handle it.

Nice evening with good food, we had the menù Lyonaise that for 35€ gives you entree, main dish and cheese or dessert, up to your choice. We also wanted a selextion of different xheeses and they offer a +3€ fee for an entire dish of cheeses, it was well worth it! Service was fast too, friendly waiters.

Absolutely the best restaurant we visited during our time in Lyon. The food is amazing and the service is great. We can’t wait to return next year.

This was my first lyonnaise dining experience. The food was very rich and delicious. Desserts were too sweet but lacked flavor. Service was fast but not friendly. Atmosphere and decor were average. Overall we had a good experience at Chez Grand Mere.

The restaurant is located in a small, cosy space. It is worth noting that there is no outdoor seating, and most of the dining area is located downstairs. The food was very good for the price, but what made the experience truly memorable was the exceptional service provided by our host, Mya (I hope I remember it correctly!). She was kind, patient, and spoke excellent English. She took the time to explain the menu and shared her knowledge of French cuisine, which greatly enhanced our dining experience. She was also extremely accommodating of my dietary requirements and promptly replaced a dish that unknowingly contained meat, ensuring I was able to enjoy my meal without any issues. It would be nice if they added more information on the menu regarding what are the main ingredients. Anyway, Mya is keeping that place alive with her energy!

This place offers excellent value for money at just 26.9 euros per person. The food is delicious, the service is friendly and attentive, and the cozy underground environment adds to the overall experience. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning.

Delicious three course meal, very happy and full. Staff were delightful and helpful. My only complaint was feeling a little rushed to eat because we were asked if we were finished eating while there was still food on our plaits or in our mouths. But otherwise it was a great experience and only 25 euro for the three courses. Definitely recommend. Great location in heart of Lyon.

Busy and nice looking restaurant. I had brilliant Pinot Noir there. But the food I had was average. Soupe à l'ognion super basic. Coq au vin cooked a long time before. Everything heated up before serving and actually served barely warm.

If you ever have the chance to visit Lyon and want to experience authentic local cuisine, I highly recommend Notre Maison, a charming traditional Bouchon Lyonnais. From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed by a warm and cozy atmosphere, with rustic wooden tables, historic décor, and the feeling of dining in the home of a local family rather than a restaurant. What impressed me the most was the genuine hospitality of the owner and staff. They took the time to explain each dish and happily recommended the restaurant’s specialties, making the meal not only delicious but also a wonderful introduction to Lyon’s rich culinary heritage. Notre Maison may not be a luxurious restaurant, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. It offers honest, authentic Lyonnais cuisine, heartfelt service, and the timeless charm of a true Bouchon Lyonnais. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Lyon, this is a place you shouldn’t miss.

A proper old school Lyonaisse Bouchon. No outside seating, not a tourist trap, the menu says if you’re in a hurry you’re in the wrong place. Family place with old photos on the wall - a small menu of classic local dishes - some strong dishes of tripe and pigs feet for the brave. Loved it here.

Unforgettable experience! Everything was beautiful. Entering from the entrance door you are catapulted in another time. The restaurant is so full of memories every single pan or pot or ladle and every single photo tell you a story. The cat, yes a cat a real one is looking over you from the top of the shelf and it makes sure everything is ok. The two waiters the man and the lady were so kind and nice, we felt very welcome. The food served was outstanding. I will never forget the black pudding with roast potatoes and the chocolate mousse with fresh cream on top. Thank you so much for taking care of us.

Having not visited Lyon before I really wanted to try one their many famous Bouchon’s and try traditional Lyonnaise cuisine. We went to Notre Maison in the heart of the Old Quarter situated in the beautiful cobbled streets a stones throw from Place du Change. I was not disappointed. The restaurant was full of rustic charm. Photographs covered the yellow walls, saucepans strung from the wooden beams. The red tables finished off the rustic decor and charm. Our waiter (Stephane) realised quickly we weren’t French and explain in perfect English that the menu was made up of hearty, dishes and if you are looking for lots of green vegetables and salads this was not the place to eat. He also mentioned to we better have empty stomachs. The menu pays homage to different pork dishes, hearty, slow cooked, and filling. We started with Rosette de Lyon (a plate of saucisson) and Gateau de foie Volaille (Chicken liver cake - a chicken liver mousse like pâté covered in a rich tomato sauce). It was really unique and absolutely delicious. The sauce was mopped up with the warm crusty freshly made baguette. There were 5 mains only on the menu which is always a good indication that chef knows what they are doing with each dish. We decided to try Rouleau de Cochon (a large piece of pork, slow cooked in red wine with potatoes and carrot). The pork was so melt in the mouth tender and the rich wine sauce complimented it perfectly balancing the fat on the meat. Sabodet aux Lentilles (A sausage cooked for 5 hours in red wine and Lentils). Big chunks of sausage in Rich, hearty, rustic lentils/ sauce. Delicious. Boudin Noir a la crème (Black pudding sausage with crushed potatoes). The black pudding sausage was perfectly seasoned and again melt in the mouth The dishes were absolutely lovely but filling. Although we were quite full we had to try the deserts. We went for house speciality “Tarte Praline” with a healthy dollop of crème fraiche. Again delicious and definitely worth trying. I highly recommend visiting Notre Maison. The atmosphere/ ambience was great. The service was excellent and most importantly the food was delicious. Definitely go if you like pork, stews, slow cooked hearty traditional food and definitely go on an empty stomach.

I came here for lunch and it was delicious. I sat just outside under the arches opening. The pork loins was tender served with potatoes with pepper sauce. The lyonnaise dessert was wonderful as well. It wasn't too sweet which I like. I recommend anyone who comes to Lyon must come and try this restaurant. The staff was friendly and found a seat right away during a busy lunch time.

Le Mercière was exactly the kind of authentic bouchon experience we hoped to find in Lyon. From the moment we walked in, the restaurant was buzzing with lively energy, warm lighting, and that classic Lyonnaise atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into the heart of the city’s food culture. The servers were quick and efficient while still being incredibly charming and welcoming, which added so much to the experience. The food was everything you want from a traditional bouchon: rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying. We started with the ravioli, which was indulgent and full of flavor, perfectly capturing that hearty, comforting style Lyon does best. The beef tartare was beautifully seasoned and incredibly fresh. The beef filet was cooked wonderfully and paired beautifully with a bottle of Beaujolais, which of course felt essential while dining in Lyon. We finished with the profiterole for dessert, which was absolutely decadent and the perfect ending to the meal. Le Mercière delivered on every level: atmosphere, hospitality, and genuinely delicious food that felt authentic rather than touristy. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Lyon and looking for a true bouchon experience.

Very nice bouchon that serves classical dishes typical for Lyon. The execution is impeccable... We were a group of 6 so we could try quite a few things on the menu. The vegetable plate with the vinaigrette was nice, so were the foie gras, the salad with sweetbreads and the trout...

We had lunch at Daniel et Denise and I would definitely recommend making a reservation in advance, as the restaurant filled up very quickly. The service was consistently friendly, attentive, and efficient – we felt very well taken care of throughout our visit. Since we really wanted to try traditional Lyonnaise cuisine in a bouchon, our expectations were quite high – and they were absolutely met. The food was outstanding. What impressed us most were the sauces, which are often the highlight of French cuisine: incredibly flavorful and perfectly balanced. I can especially recommend the chicken with morel mushrooms – it was a true highlight. One small note: we were there with a baby and a stroller, and due to the limited space, it was a bit inconvenient. However, that was our only minor criticism. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience that we would happily repeat.

Charming historic Lyonnaise bouchon. While most of the food was not to my preference that was not a knock on the food. Everything looked wonderful and ingredients fresh. It was a new type of food for me and glad to try it. I sat near the kitchen and from what I saw it was spotless. Service was incredible. So patient and willing to explain everything in English even though that wasn’t expected.

A superb place for dinner right in the heart of the old town of Lyons. Busy, bustling and very French, all the dishes were excellent and done to a very high standard. We over-ordered but ultimately finished almost everything as it was so tasty and flavourful.

Tips for Choosing a Traditional French Restaurant in Lyon

Understanding a few local customs and practical details will dramatically improve your experience when dining in Lyon. The city’s traditional restaurants operate on rhythms and expectations that may differ from what you are used to elsewhere in France or abroad, so a little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a memorable meal for all the right reasons.

1). Book ahead, especially for dinner

Lyon’s best traditional tables are small, often seating fewer than forty guests. Walk-ins are possible at lunch if you arrive before noon, but dinner without a reservation is a gamble. Call or book online at least a day or two in advance for weekdays, and several days ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings.

2). Embrace the prix-fixe menu

Most traditional restaurants offer a formule or menu at lunch that includes two or three courses at a significantly lower price than ordering à la carte. This is not a lesser experience; it is often the best way to taste the kitchen’s signature dishes without overspending. Look for menus that feature a starter, main, and dessert for under €30.

3). Learn the vocabulary of the bouchon

Terms like “quenelle,” “andouillette,” “graton,” and “sabodet” will appear on menus without explanation. A quick review before you sit down will help you order with confidence. Do not hesitate to ask the server for guidance; in a true bouchon, the staff take pride in explaining their dishes to curious diners.

4). Watch the wine list for local appellations

Lyon sits at the crossroads of Beaujolais, Côtes du Rhône, and Burgundy. A traditional restaurant should feature wines from these regions prominently. Ask for a Beaujolais cru such as Morgon or Fleurie, or a white from Condrieu if you are ordering fish or quenelles. The house wine in a good bouchon is often excellent value.

5). Go for lunch on a market day

Many traditional chefs shop at the Halles de Lyon-Paul Bocuse or the Croix-Rousse market in the morning. Dining at lunch means you are eating the freshest possible product, often prepared the same day. Lunch service is also more relaxed, giving you time to linger over coffee and observe the rhythm of the dining room.

6). Do not expect a quiet, minimalist room

Traditional Lyonnaise restaurants are often lively, with close-set tables, conversation flowing between neighbours, and the clatter of cutlery as a constant backdrop. This is part of the charm. If you are looking for a hushed, formal atmosphere, choose one of the more refined addresses on the list, but know that even there the spirit of the bouchon remains.

7). Leave room for cheese and dessert

The cheese trolley in a traditional Lyon restaurant is not an afterthought. Local offerings such as Saint-Marcellin, Rigotte de Condrieu, and Cervelle de Canut demand attention. Likewise, desserts like tarte aux pralines and bugnes are worth saving space for. Order the full menu if you can manage it, and pace yourself accordingly.

The pleasure of eating traditionally in Lyon is not simply about the food on the plate. It is about the continuity of a culture that values sitting down together, taking time, and honouring the work of farmers, winemakers, and cooks. When you choose one of the restaurants above, you are participating in a ritual that has shaped this city’s identity for centuries.

Take the time to walk through the Presqu’île or up the hill to Croix-Rousse before or after your meal. The streets themselves tell the story of the silk workers, market gardeners, and river traders whose appetites built the foundations of Lyonnaise cuisine. A good meal here stays with you long after the table is cleared, not only because of the flavours but because of the sense of place that accompanies every course.
