Lyon wears its title as France’s gastronomic capital with a confidence that extends far beyond the city’s legendary bouchons and charcuterie-heavy traditions. While the classic Lyonnais table remains a cultural cornerstone, a quiet revolution has been simmering in the city’s kitchens.
Today, the dining scene is as vibrant with plant-forward creativity as it is with cream and butter, making it a surprisingly rewarding destination for vegetarians. For years, traveling meat-free in France often meant making do with a plate of fries or a simple omelette.
But in Lyon, chefs have embraced vegetables, legumes, and dairy with the same reverence once reserved for offal and poultry. From contemporary bistros in the Presqu’île to cozy cafés in Croix-Rousse, the city now offers an impressive array of dedicated vegetarian and vegan-friendly establishments.
This shift is driven by a new generation of Lyonnais chefs who see vegetables not as side dishes, but as the stars of the plate. They are sourcing from the fertile Rhône-Alpes region, working with heirloom produce, and crafting tasting menus that are both technically impressive and deeply satisfying.
The result is a dining landscape that honors Lyon’s rich culinary heritage while looking firmly toward the future. Whether you are a strict vegetarian, a flexitarian, or simply someone who appreciates exceptional cooking, Lyon has a table for you.
The options range from elegant, white-tablecloth experiences to casual lunch spots where the daily special is built around whatever looked best at the market that morning. You no longer have to compromise on flavor or creativity to eat well without meat.
Navigating this new wave of plant-based dining can be overwhelming, especially in a city with so many restaurants. To help you make the most of your visit, we have curated a list of the best vegetarian restaurants in Lyon. These are places that consistently deliver on taste, atmosphere, and originality, ensuring a memorable meal every time.
Below, you will find our selection of the 15 best vegetarian restaurants in Lyon, carefully chosen for their dedication to quality and their ability to showcase the incredible potential of vegetable-focused cuisine.

An amazing find in Lyon, and I must say the perfect first gastronomic experience after arriving in this vibrant city for te first time! Every dish was beautifully planned to 'wow' your palate, with each course offering its own explosion of flavours. The service was great and perfectly paced, so you don't feel rushed. We spent two full hours enjoying amazing food and drinks. I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I return to Lyon, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. It’s absolutely worth every penny.

The service was outstanding, friendly, and the well timed dishes appeared in a relaxed not rushed manner. While it was very hot the overall indoor restaurant managed with doors open and ample space between tables so the indoor temperature was manageable. There was also an outdoor seating option. The presentation of each course was beautiful and appealing. We were excited to try each course. Unfortunately, for our palates, the food tasted bland, as if seasoning was not on hand to accentuate the flavors of the ingredients. There is a lot more flavor potential waiting to be found while balancing the vegetarian and vegan essence presented here. The blandness was a disappointment for us as the restaurant enjoys praise and good reviews and as such we were really expecting more.
Mark Meade★★★★★
This small friendly vegan restaurant was a great start to our stay in Lyon. We had the 3 course tasting menu and the cheese board which was delicious. It's certainly set the bar high for other vegan restaurants. I would definitely recommend.
Suss in France★★★★★
Fabulous dining experience. Went here for my wife's birthday lunch and it was great. Good food and great service. The food was beautifully presented and it was so much fun to see what dish was going to come out next. Amazing vegan cheese platter and outstanding service from Anton and the staff. Stop by for a delicious and fun meal without animals suffering for it. Will return.

Delicious and unusual. Fantastic to have such high quality and innovative plant based food, with excellent service and in a great location. Very good wine also. Would highly recommend and would definitely return when we visit Lyon again.

Exceptional dishes and ambiance. The restaurant is located in a very pretty, quieter part of the city, away from the crowds of the shops, bars, and restaurants. The welcome is warm, friendly, and cosy, perfectly matching the charming bistro atmosphere. Upon arrival, we were shown a board with the menu of the day and given the choice of a starter and main, a main and dessert, or all three courses at very reasonable fixed prices. A tip for first-timers like me: go for all three courses, you'll get the full experience and won't regret it!
The selection of wines, beers, and organic sodas is quite extensive, and the dishes were, in one word, amazing. The kitchen is incredibly innovative and creative with vegetables, and each course brings new and delightful surprises. The service was attentive and well paced, it probably helped that we were the first guests to arrive. Within half an hour the place was packed! This is a must-visit for any fellow vegetarian or vegan looking for a great place to enjoy proper, thoughtfully prepared food in Lyon. Highly recommended!

I am always happy to support a restaurant that provides an alternative to the meat world. This one has a limited blackboard menu of 3 dishes per course. The entrees were enjoyed - one with split peas, the other with leaks. The main course that was cauliflower based was less enjoyable. It was pretty in presentation but something not quite right with the sauces. It was a bit too sweet. My partner had the chocolate mousse but thought there wasn't enough of an intense taste. Overall, it was enjoyable, but not great.
Don★★★★★
We ordered the cabbage, mushrooms, and fried polenta — expecting polite vegetables, got a full-blown performance instead. The cabbage came out looking all humble, then hit me with smoky, crispy confidence like it had a PR team. The mushrooms were dark, rich, and mysterious — the kind you’d definitely text at 2 a.m. if they were human. And the fried polenta? Golden, crunchy, and so comforting I briefly considered legally adopting it.
The staff were effortlessly cool — that rare mix of genuinely nice and “we could all be in an indie band together.” The wine was delightful, slightly chaotic, and made me feel 15% more philosophical by the second glass.
By the end I was sitting there, fork in hand, questioning whether I could move here. If vegetables always tasted like this, I’d be a better person by now.
Five stars. Would cross borders again for another round.

We were delighted by this Chinese vegetarian restaurant in the old town of Lyon. The cuisine was delicious, flavourful and highly memorable. The menu isn’t huge, but that’s a good thing - they’ve perfected the dishes that they offer. Enjoyed the fermented white tea too!
Vanessa Ruth★★★★★
This is the best food I have had since coming to Lyon. Carré Jardin is truly something special, even if you are not a vegetarian. The “poisson” was excellent and very creative (the nori to mimic grilled fish skin was genius) and the wontons made me appreciate that food and flavor can truly be an art form. I’m so glad I came across this place and was able to experience it. You will need to make a reservation a few days in advance.
Manfred Pizka★★★★★
A great experience, and well worth the price! The food was something completely new to me, asian basics creatively interpreted in a really fancy way!
The recommended way as presented by the menu, is to order one of the "main" and one of the "side" dishes, allowing for many great combinations. We followed the recommendation and did not regret it 🙂
The wine offerings were varied, and went really well with the food. The staff was really nice and made us feel immediately welcome, as did the soft, calming music.
All in all, a great place! 😊
Chris Chapman★★★★★
The food was amazing. The chef has a real talent using unique flavours to produce amazing tasting vegetarian meals. My wife has been vegetarian for over 40 years and this was the best vegetarian food she has ever had. The desserts were delicious and also highly recommended.
Gill Brisk★★★★★
Really tasty food. Didn’t know aubergine could be so tasty! Bao buns delicious. Crispy cauliflower really crunchy with great flavour. Very helpful owner guided us to vegan options of which there were plenty. Nice cool interior though we sat just outside in the quiet street.

I liked the vibe of this place and the service was friendly.
The food was good, but I feel like it wasn’t filling or tasty enough to justify the price. I went to other vegan food spots in Lyon which gave me a lot more for a comparable or lower price compared to here.

Really enjoyed our meal. Food was great and service was excellent. Google Translate works fine but our waitress spoke English fluently which was an added bonus.

Excellent vegan food. My potato keema dish was sublime and really filling.

- 5 stars for the food!
- 6 out of 5 stars for the service - the server, Eva, is extremely friendly and welcomed us back with genuine warmth the second time we went there. She even took the time to help me with some tips for French music I might like, even roping in the owner and some of his friends. I got an excellent list - merci !

This meal was better than some of the Michelin starred restaurants I've eaten at. From start to finish, each course was exquisite, perfectly balanced and prepared, creative, and visually appealing. The rhythm of the courses was perfect (not too slow or fast), the service very friendly, and overall just a joy to experience. It is worth every cent for such high quality food.
If you only have one chance to eat at a fancy restaurant in Lyon, make it this one!
Jasmine Davidson★★★★★
Wonderful experience! Creative and very tasty dishes, and exceptional service. We got both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairings with each dish, and they were great choices and also very creative (especially the non-alcoholic options). We were ready to stumble our way through staff interactions in our elementary French, but the staff all spoke excellent English and were happy to do their detailed explanations of the food and pairings in English. It was wonderful to have an entirely vegan meal at such a high level of taste and service. Highly recommend!
Matt Pengelly★★★★★
A faultless evening of gastronomic creativity, understated style and impeccable service. Whether you eat plant-based day to day or not, this is world class food prepared exquisitely and served with warmth and passionate knowledge by a wonderful team.
Myself and a (definitely not vegan) friend had a fantastic evening working through the 7 course tasting menu and accompanying drinks pairing with total joy. There were too many stand-out dishes to pick a favourite, but I will say that I am still now daydreaming about the borscht with cloves and smoked potato…!
If you are even considering dining here, then I urge you to stop thinking and book right now. You will not regret it.
Terrey Burr★★★★★
Outstanding on every level. We live in Australia and the UK, read the reviews and thought we should try. So glad we did, what an experience with taste, presentation and service. Would come back to Lyon just to go here again. thank you, only sorry that I forgot to take photos until the very end where you can see my husband is really enjoying his dessert

Delicious multi-course dinner with beautiful presentation and welcoming service. High standards and fair price considering the fine dining.

Lovely vegan food and I had a (blanche) beer to go with it. The atmosphere was nice as the music playing quietly in the background was of 80s/90s music like REM, the cranberries, etc. So suited us gen Xers. One thing to note is that the restaurant doesn't show up on Google Street view but it does exiist! Very easy to get too as well, a short walk from croix rousse stop. Definitely wil be returning!
B Corel★★★★★
I'm not a vegan and will probably never will be for various reasons but ... I'm glad I was curious enough to test the lunch menu of this restaurant !
All 3 courses were excellent, tasty, and well balanced, using many ingredients. Reasonably priced as well which matters for lunch.
There are two things here : the research of new flavour combinations and the experiments to imitate the "normal" food. In the photo you'll see an ersatz of hamburger and fois gras (called faux gras 😉). It is bluffing! My opinion is that the second quest is secondary and should not have to limit the creativity of the chef. It is probably meant to attract traditional omnivores like me and reassure them that they can find dishes that look like the ones they are used to 😉.
Excellent experience on both objectives, today ! !
Clement Galvier★★★★★
Enracinés delivered well designed, vegan-based cuisine with a deliberately concise menu — which clearly allows for excellent execution. I chose the vegan burger and was genuinely impressed by both its presentation and flavour. The space itself is bright, warm, and comfortable, making it a very pleasant place to dine. A well-balanced experience overall, and definitely somewhere I’ll return to explore more of the menu.

When Hank announced that they were closing, we were super upset. We were really happy to discover that a new vegan place would be opening in the same location. Honestly, Furahaa has surpassed all of our expectations in terms of quality, service, and value for money!
You can get a meal deal like in the picture for €10, which is amazing especially given the portion size. It’s super affordable so we can go and support regularly as vegans which is nice because I find that, while I am grateful that vegan restaurants exist, they can often be quite expensive.
The server/owner in Furhahaa is always super nice and patient. We can’t sign all that much besides hello and thank you, but it’s still easy to order by pointing and gestures etc. The inclusiveness is, of course, a great aspect about this place too.
In conclusion, highly recommend this restaurant to all — vegan, non-vegan, hearing, hearing impaired — definitely the best vegan place in Lyon in my opinion!!!! 🌟🍔🤤

Best vegan burger in my life 😍😭💚We tried Furahaa in Paris 2 weeks ago and made an extra stop in Lyon (leaving France) to eat at Furahaa again. I also read about this inclusive and sustainable group, which is just so inspiring. I can’t wait for Furahaa to open in Berlin 😃😃😃

Absolutely loved this restaurant. We went as a group of four. One vegan the rest of us carnivores, so we opted for the fish tasting menu. Honestly, I thought all the dishes were great and while having the fish was brilliant, I could have gone all vegetarian and not miss the fish, the dishes were that good! The stand out for me was an aubergine roulade with sardines, man it was good! The service was brilliant, as non-French speakers the server was happy to guide us in English and his wine recommendations throughout the meal were spot on! Super chill atmosphere absolutely recommended. Beautiful space too. Very reasonably priced.

Very tasty vegan and vegetarian brunch menu where you can select your own plates from the choices available that day.
Everything was delicious. Downside, very very light and really lacking some protein for the vegan options.
Nice terrace at the back that's in full sun all day. Pretty hot as well, but great relaxed vibe there which lots of different people chilling there on a Sunday. Families, couples, groups or friends.
Inside also a very large seating area right next to the coffee and tea station.
Staff was mostly behind the bar as there is no table service so didn't see them much but they were very friendly when walking around to recollect the plates.
Hoping they can make the vegan version of their brunch a bit more complete somehow. Would love to come back!
Lorene F.★★★☆☆
I was very much looking forward having the vegan brunch here, but left quite disappointed.
First of all I liked that they offer both vegetarian and vegan options and that you can compose your plate yourself.
That being said, if you go for the vegan options you don’t get a lot of protein from the few veggies in your plate. It would be great if they would revise it to include vegan proteins somehow, or maybe have a system where you can get a bit more if you’re still hungry?
Because quantity-wise, I have to agree with some other comments I’ve read, it’s not a lot overall, and I’m not a big eater. Even with the dessert.
Speaking of dessert, I really like the little chocolate tomato fondant! Never had that before.
They do not have decaf coffee. They serve several homemade drinks in the brunch menu.
There’s a lovely terrace at the back, full of sun. Service is at the bar.

This restaurant is a spectacular kitchen attached to a cozy little cafe front. Everything that came out of the kitchen was exceptional. The presentation was beautiful, the flavors were unique, (like the rosemary and hazelnut garlic mashed potatoes) and the crumble sarrasin was delicious. Everything on the menu is vegetarian, and there are vegan options. The service was exceptional, the atmosphere is cozy, and the food was spectacular.

Left disappointed after the brunch today. 23 euros paid to leave hungry. It wasn't bad, just not enough. You expect a little more seeing what others offer for a similar price.

A good surprise. Not a fan of vegetarian food but was impressed. The bagels with cheese and salmon was good. But the highlight was the veggie bowl with yellow curry sauce. Cryspy and an interesting mix of taste. Definitely one of the best vegan dish I ever tasted.
For dessert the muffin was fine, the chai seeds pudding was a bit heavy and the white cheese was tasty and refreshing.
Worth a 4.5

Having been told “you’ll struggle to find vegan food in France” I was not only surprised to find plenty of options but also really impressed and relieved to discover how good all the options were.
Comptoir Sauvage was one of them. A lovely little restaurant, good atmosphere friendly staff, great service and sublime vegan food. Mainly vegetarian, but some food was altered to be made vegan and obviously not a problem to them.
I wish there was more stars to rate this place and I’m sad I live thousands of miles away from it. But if if I’m ever back in Lyon, I’m definitely going back.

What a lovely place! We took a three courses menu and all dishes were delicious. The client service is amazing, we felt very welcomed. The watermelon smoothie and chia pudding were especially super yummy! Merci!

Tips for Enjoying Vegetarian Dining in Lyon
While the dedicated vegetarian scene is thriving, knowing a few local customs and practical tips can significantly enhance your dining experience in Lyon. The city’s food culture is deeply rooted in tradition, but it is also wonderfully adaptable once you know how to navigate it.
1). Learn the local language of food
While many modern vegetarian restaurants have English menus, understanding a few key French phrases is invaluable. Terms like sans viande (without meat), sans poisson (without fish), and plat végétarien (vegetarian dish) will help you communicate clearly. Don’t be shy about asking if a dish contains animal-based broths or gelatine, as these can sometimes be hidden in traditional French cooking.
2). Book ahead, especially for dinner
Lyon is a bustling city, and its best restaurants, including the top vegetarian spots, fill up quickly. This is particularly true on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Making a reservation, even for a casual lunch, is a sign of respect for the restaurant and guarantees you won’t be turned away from a place you’ve been eager to try.
3). Embrace the lunchtime formule
The best value in French dining is almost always at lunch. Most restaurants offer a formule or menu du midi, which typically includes a starter and main course, or a main course and dessert, for a fixed, reasonable price. This is a fantastic way to experience high-end vegetarian cooking without the higher cost of an à la carte dinner.
4). Venture beyond the bouchon
Traditional Lyonnais bouchons are wonderful cultural experiences, but their menus are historically meat-centric. While many now offer a vegetarian plate, it is rarely their specialty. For a truly exceptional meat-free meal, prioritize the dedicated vegetarian restaurants or modern bistros on this list, where the chef’s passion for vegetables is the main event.
5). Explore the city’s markets
To truly understand why Lyon’s vegetarian food is so good, visit one of its incredible food markets. The Marché Saint-Antoine along the Saône river or the Marché de la Croix-Rousse are sensory feasts. Seeing the vibrant, seasonal produce from local farms will give you a new appreciation for the ingredients that end up on your plate at the city’s best vegetarian restaurants.
Lyon’s evolution into a plant-based paradise is a testament to its enduring culinary spirit. It proves that a city so deeply proud of its food traditions can also be a leader in innovation, creating dishes that are both respectful of the past and exciting for the future.
So, whether you are a lifelong vegetarian or simply looking to explore a different side of French gastronomy, Lyon welcomes you with open arms and a beautifully set table. The hardest part will be choosing where to eat first.
