Saint-Malo is a city defined by the sea. The salty air, the crash of waves against ancient ramparts, and the cry of gulls form the backdrop to a dining scene that is both proudly Breton and surprisingly cosmopolitan. Eating here is not just about sustenance; it is about understanding the maritime soul of this storied Corsair city. From the moment you pass through the Porte Saint-Vincent, you are entering a world where the day’s rhythm is set by the tides and the fishing boats returning to the harbor.
The culinary identity of Saint-Malo is anchored in its geography. Situated on the Emerald Coast, the city enjoys access to some of the most prized seafood in Europe, including the famous Cancale oysters and the scallops of the bay. Yet, the dining landscape has evolved far beyond simple fisherman’s fare. Today, traditional crêperies sit side-by-side with Michelin-starred tables, and neo-bistros are redefining what modern Breton cuisine can be.
Navigating this rich gastronomic map can be overwhelming, especially during the busy summer months when the intra-muros streets are thronged with visitors. The key to a memorable meal lies in knowing where to look. While the bustling tourist promenades offer convenience, the true gems are often tucked away on quiet cobblestone lanes or overlooking the vast beaches of the Paramé district.
This guide is designed to cut through the noise and lead you to the tables that matter. We have prioritized restaurants that demonstrate a commitment to quality ingredients, authentic technique, and a genuine sense of place. Whether you are seeking the perfect buckwheat galette, a plateau of pristine shellfish, or a sophisticated tasting menu, the list below represents the very best of Saint-Malo’s dynamic food scene.
Each selection has been evaluated not just for the food on the plate, but for the atmosphere, service, and overall experience it provides. We understand that a great restaurant is about more than just eating; it is about the warmth of the welcome, the view from the window, and the story behind the ingredients. This is the essence of dining in Saint-Malo.
Without further delay, here are the essential addresses to bookmark for your visit to this Breton stronghold.

Great ambiance, warm and attentive service, and an unforgettable meal. I ordered the Terre et Mer (surf and turf) crêpe, and it was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the smoked duck was rich and savory, and the buttery buckwheat crêpe was wonderfully crisp. Everything paired beautifully with a glass of local cider. A perfect taste of Brittany!

Best crépe I've ever had! The savoury crepes were very good but the sweet one with home made chocolate and Chantilly....out of this world! Also very cheap for the quality and the amazing service!

From the moment we arrived, the team offered exceptional service — the kind that makes you feel genuinely seen and cared for. They immediately helped us find a temporary parking solution since we had our baby with us, and that thoughtful gesture set the tone for the entire visit.
Inside, the staff brought a personal touch to everything: recommending dishes with sincerity, checking in with warmth, and creating a space that felt both comfortably relaxed and subtly luxurious. It’s rare to find a place that balances those two feelings so effortlessly.
The galettes were superb — beautifully prepared, generous, and full of flavor. Dessert was just as impressive, indulgent without being heavy, and all at a price that felt refreshingly affordable for the quality offered.
They truly lived up to their Google reviews, and in many ways exceeded them. A place that understands hospitality, craft, and heart. Highly recommended.

Quite a busy spot so better to book in advance. Lots of options for galette and crepes, including vegetarian options. A nice spot for tea as well in the afternoon
Dennis Corsten★★★★★
Excellent place, very friendly and helpful staff, very friendly with our kids. The restaurant looks very nice. The meals are a treat for the eyes and taste wonderful. Very balanced flavours, it is listed and famous as a crêpe restaurant but their omelettes and salades are also very good. They also have a great selection of tea and have some nice wines if that's more for you.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this place when visiting the port of Saint-Malo.

Booked last minute during our day visit for dinner here. Food was excellent and the selection was from a fresh daily specials board. Definitely recommend during your stay.

This has to be the most perfect restaurant. Everything is of utmost quality: cuisine, friendliness of staff, and atmosphere. Despite my very weak French language skills, I navigated the menu with the help of my waiter. Gravlax de saumone, Cod with courgettes in a savory butter and ham sauce, and profiteroles smothered in the most amazing chocolate sauce I've ever tasted. A very nice Sauvignon Blanc, with un caffe and a Lambig de Bretagne to cap things off. The waiter urged me to pop around the corner and speak to the chef. A very young chap with extraordinary skills (spoke to him in English). Ça c'est bon. Go here!

One word to describe this lovely restaurant “top” ! The server is very nice, and we had a chance to meet the chef, he makes dishes with dedication. We had a great time in Saint-Malo.
Michelle Shin★★★★★
1. Make a reservation - easy to do by messaging them via Facebook! They have a sign saying full for lunch and dinner hanging on their door so it must happen a lot.
2. Local feel - menu is hand written and brought on chalkboards. It is in French but the man servicing front of house knew enough English to talk us through the options. Because the place is small, it really feels cosy.
3. Amazing food - highlights were the "accras croustillants de crabe" - perfectly fried and seasoned crab cake; fish w curry beurre blanc sauce and parmesan risotto; and the "tiramisu" made w speculoos cookies, marscapone cream, apples and caramel au beurre sale
4. Great service - service was prompt and incredibly nice...even after we made a pretty big mistake. 😋
5. Close to beach - after our dinner, we walked one minute to the beach and watched the sunset.
6. Great value for money - was given two options: three course meal @ 30€ or two course meal @ 28€ (prices are as of today, could change but wanted to give context)
All in all, a meal we will never forget! Recommend if you're in the area!

Had a wonderful dinner here on 26 Juin. I highly recommend Pesk ha farz and Kig ha farz (plats traditionelles Breton). Both were cooked just perfectly and the sauces were beautifully balanced. They didn't overwhelm the flavors of each dish. I'm not an expert on Breton cooking, but this was a top notch example. We were greeted by a very knowledgeable man who really knows his products. Helped us pair a wine with each dish, and brought out a delicious cider to sample before dinner (which in hindsight, went nicely with the pate en croute). He even helped position the table so that we both had a view of the water as the evening went on. It was an excellent meal, with a light-hearted fun atmosphere. If you're in St. Malo, don't miss a chance to try this place.
Vernon Rabbetts★★★★★
Really nice restaurant, the Pesk ha Farz and Kig ha Farz with buckwheat what crumble are real stand-out dishes but the burger looked amazing too, and the foie gras starter and tarte tartin dessert disappeared very quickly.
Service is friendly and the decor warm, and inviting.

Delicious food, great service and a cozy refined atmosphere. A great menu and wine selection, with each dish having its own unique taste. The waiters were all very attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend, with a reservation.

Went there on a weeknight. Despite asking for the deee table outside they said it wasn’t available and told us we could have a place inside. There are a lot of tables and there was one server and the owner. The service was hectic and slow. Once you had your food you didn’t see the server again until the next course. The food was good. The presentation lovely. The outside table wasn’t filled.
Russ W★★★★★
Dined with my wife (Tues 7:10pm). Warmly greeted and seated inside by a window. The restaurant has indoor (ground and mezzanine) and outdoor seating. I had the Kig Ha Farz for a main. Perfectly presented, cooked and taste. The two proprietors were lovely. Attentive and engaging. Plenty of atmosphere without overbearing music or loud chatter. Just a fantastic environment for a relaxed, delicious dining experience. Highly recommended.

Nice view and fresh seafood
Great food paired with a lovely backdrop. You can view sunset from the restaurant. Restaurant located at a back of the ferry terminal next to the parking. Very convenient if you arrive by car and park nearby.
Food was great. Service was nice. Staffs are attentive.

It was a wonderful experience to dine here. We were a group of 4 (and a cat); each of us ordered a set including a starter, main course and dessert. All the seafood are awesome! The staff are friendly and attentive. And the sea view is amazing. We had a great night. Parfait 😌

Fantastic views of harbor, fresh fish menu with everything a seafood lover wants. We were passing through otherwise we would have definitely returned.
Great meat starter, followed by a fish / seafood tower. Good choice of wines, very friendly staff... of the beaten path but highly highly reccomended

I came here for lunch upon a friend's recommendation. This was the best meal I had during my 6-day stay in St. Malo. The staff were friendly and kind, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere with a gorgeous view. The prices are fair for what they are and the portions are filling (I had a main course + dessert and it was perfect for a small person with a monster's appetite).
Rana Mahdavi Far★★★★☆
Very pleasant view of sunset, make sure to make reservations in advance. The staffs were polit, helpful and friendly. Specially one who was speaking English, explained every dish to us with patient. We felt welcomed. They brought tuna fish bread on the table for free. It is on the ground floor which make it accessible for everyone. They have parking area. Overall a nice place to watch the sunset if it is after 7 pm. Becouse they open at 7 pm.

Just like the other comments say, overpriced and overrated. I paid 25€ for an eggplant dish... And the eggplant arrived very lukewarm, so its true that their plates are premade. Also they wouldnt accept my carte restaurant. I dont recommend this place

For people who love good food made by people who care. A small menu of absolutely delicious recipes made with love. No more expensive than anywhere else! If you're tired of Gallette, Crepe and Moules Frites at every turn, try this place, it's the real deal.
Jeremy Bailey★★★★★
Cafe Cargo Clute absolutely lives up to its Google rating. The owner was incredibly friendly and spent a good five minutes walking us through the lunch menu, sharing his personal favourites and suggesting thoughtful pairings. His passion for the café was obvious, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into curating the menu.
We had the lunch special and tried all three croques—each one was excellent. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the gazpacho was spot on for a warm, sunny day. Of course, we had to try the oysters too, which were fresh and juicy—an absolute treat. A great find in St. Malo—highly recommended!

This is an outstanding little café in a medieval street. The menu is mouthwateringly delicious - original too. It is a gorgeous combination of French and more exotic tastes. We had the Sunday brunch and thought it miraculously good. I dream of a return for second and third helpings. BUT you do need to book. The place is small and deservedly popular

Perfect place for a breakfast, food is great and ingredients are fresh, I tried their "super detoxifyer" (or something like that) and it does help with transit and energy (its a bit rough tastewise tho... but I still recommand).
The atmosphere is very calm, its small and feels kinda like a cafe with great food, very chill.
Would recommand for breakfast, i don't know about other meals but since the food was great I would assume lunch and dinner are good as well.

The menu and food were delicious. The entrée was an asparagus soup, the main dish a merlu, and the dessert featured raspberry, almond, and citrus flavors. Honestly, all the dishes were perfectly cooked, everything was on point and carefully prepared. My sincere congratulations.
The service was pleasant and attentive. I would have loved if they had explained the dishes while serving to enhance the experience even more. The atmosphere and decor were beautiful, reflecting the sailor and marine style of the city.
Overall, highly recommended!

Great food, especially the cod mousse - sounds weird but a really exceptional dish. More interesting than the standard St Malo moule frite fare. More expensive too but not outrageous and felt good value. Offers original takes on some French classics. Accommodated my gluten free requirements well. Peak season better to reserve though one day before was enough to get us a table at a sensible time. Really good experience.

A very fine experience at this chef-owned restaurant, run by the delightful husband and wife team. Food was excellent; the bavette was cooked just right and was accented perfectly by the cream and pepper sauce. The staff is friendly, warm and accommodating. Highly recommended. (We returned the next day for a wonderful lunch at very reasonable prices.)

We spontaneously saw the restaurant and thought it looked cozy - I asked the waiter and he had a table for 3 for us - we had the really really good cod fish with a declicious fishstock and vegetables which tasted super fresh - my father had the steak which he also liked 🙂 if there is alcohol free beer 🍺 next time even better 🙂
The Creme brûlée with hazelnut was very tasty as well.

Le Berbere is a love, small and very popular restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful and the decor is warm and inviting. We ordered our drinks which came with a small bowl of spiced potatoes and olives. We then started by sharing the ‘chicken brick’ which is like a crispy pancake stuffed with a mixture of chicken. Then we had lemon chicken tagine and a lamb tagine with a side of couscous. The food was delicious but be warned the chicken and the lamb come with bones in.
We would definitely recommend eating here but don’t forget to book.

There is a reason why its 'Top Rated' Somewhat hidden on a quiet street inside the Intra-Muros but this place is a real gem in St. Malo. A friendly service and really delicious Algerian food. The tagines and merquez sausages are superb. Thank you for making our St Valentine dinner extra special.

A lot of positive reviews prompted our visit.
Unfortunately, we found this place didn't live up to them for us.
We had an initial very warm welcome, and then we were moved tables to accommodate a party of 6.
The brick starter was excellent.
Both the lamb tagine and couscous were very mildly flavored and I used an entire dish of harissa to try to liven it up.
The meatballs were very bland, and when I advised this I was contradicted and told I was the only person ever to complain. OK, well, possibly? These were replaced with two more merguez, not fully cooked, so had to be put in the mild consomme to cook a bit longer.
For a tourist place I guess it was OK, but we really were not impressed.
Cold wind every time the door opened, for all the people getting takeout.
Mana Neyestani★★★★☆
Is it ridiculous to go all the way to Saint-Malo — the capital of galettes, crêpes, and seafood — and dedicate a meal to couscous instead? Well, I’m exactly that ridiculous! After two days of galettes and oysters, I decided to give in to my deep love for couscous and tagine. I went to Le Berbère and was welcomed by friendly, polite staff and an excellent chicken tagine. After all, a little variety among all the Breton dishes doesn’t hurt!

The food here is absolutely outstanding—every dish is packed with bold, rich, and well-balanced flavors that taste fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Great food, great vibes, and genuine hospitality. Highly recommend.

My husband and I and his mum and aunt who was also visiting from Australia with us ate in Mana on 19th December. Yes, we were early to the restaurant and were allowed in just after 7 pm. Having been shown to our table we checked out the menu. Once we were able to place our orders we went ahead.
Our waiter was very helpful and charming (please note that I had declared that I loved him!).
The menu was limited but beautifully prepared, our waiter was a perfect host and gave us advice about our choices. The food and wine was delicious, so too the dessert.
I’d highly recommend a visit to Mana if you are stopping off in St Malo. You won’t regret it

Absolutely amazing find!
The food was truly Michelin star worthy — every dish was crafted with precision, flavor, and creativity. Cant say enough good word about risotto!
The service was exactly as it should be: attentive yet effortless, making you feel like you’re visiting your best friend’s home rather than just dining out.
And the prices? Incredibly reasonable for the quality and experience offered. This place is a rare gem that balances excellence with warmth — highly recommended!

It was just a beautiful experience, delicious , caring for every detail in a dish. One small mention, the fish has a saffron based sauce, which you love it or hate it, I’m not in the first group 🙂 so I switched the plate with my husband and I had the pork cheeks.
Another mention: there the menu has not many options, 3 for opening, 3 for main, 3 for desert. But you actually don’t need more, and I appreciate this style, as the chef is really paying attention on what is going out from the kitchen to the table. So thank you!

Elevated dining in Saint-Malo. Sleek, modern room, first-rate 6 course tasting menu, beautifully plated. Each course was a reflection of Brittany's bounty of seafood, and given our April visit, all dishes were hyper-seasonal (spring asparagus, etc). Excellent, professional yet friendly service. Excellent value, too. Would not be surprised if the chef's cooking were rewarded with a Michelin nod.
Would definitely recommend.

An unforgettable and beautifully presented menu, a view of the kitchen, a welcoming and attentive staff and each plate as visually stunning as it was delicious. Very generous and very high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Attention to every detail. One of our most special meals during our stay in France. A must!

A wonderful experience that made our visit to St Malo. A short distance behind the amazing promenade. The food was of upmost quality with an open kitchen to watch the care taken in preparation of the food. The staff were very caring and friendly and many regulars were in the restaurant which was a good sign.

Food was beautifuly presented, how ever flavour just wasn't there, and the fish dish we had was cold. A very disappointing meal. We dont usually complain but did this time we did. Our comments were rudely responded to.

This place is a gem! Everything was amazing, from the fish to the beef to the desserts… It was all very delicious. The prices are cheap for the quality of the food as well. I could dine here every night.

This tiny restaurant is a gem and make sure you reserve well in advance because space is limited and the food is stellar. Every single item my husband and I had, in each of our three-course meal, was exceptionally prepared and presented, and the staff--including the owner, who is the one who served us--could not be friendlier or more helpful. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Saint Malo.

Doma means "home", and that's exactly what it felt like... so welcomed, I wish I had food like this every day at home! Price-quality ratio is unbelievable. Such inventive dishes, lots of flavour, amazing fresh ingredients, cosy place, and the service was exemplary. Very enjoyable experience... we were so tired after a whole day of exploring, but dinner at Doma left us feeling completely regenerated. Thank you, team! ❤️🏠

One of the best meals we have had in France.
Amazing food with multilayer flavors but without the Michelin pretentiousness.
Service was friendly, welcoming, and smiling.
We absolutely enjoyed our dinner and would come back in a heartbeat.
They also did not skip a beat dealing with a lactose allergy that I hate but is reality.

Amazing restaurant in Saint Malo.
The menu has a small selection of options: 3 options for starters, 3 options for main courses and 3 options for deserts.
This means the dishes are selected as the best the restaurant can make and they sure live up to the expectations!
Each dish was prepared with utmost expertise and the waiter was kind enough to give us outstanding wine recommendations as pairings with the food.
The mille feuille was especially good: if you have the chance to order it we highly recommend it.
Since the restaurant changes their menu every season, the dish may or may not be available when you visit.
The restaurant has only a few tables available since it is a small restaurant; they accept reservations only a month in advance. We highly recommend making a reservation to secure a table for your visit.

Very good choice in St Malo old town. Even if close to touristy streets and shops it has flavourful local dishes. Short menu with affordable price and selected items. We tried the smoked salmon and lamb, and finished with a chocolate dessert. Would repeat again if I come back!

Wonderful lunch at La Fourchette à Droite in Saint-Malo. We were lucky to find this restaurant and try the dégustation menu. Every course was fresh, delicious, and felt straight from the farm. Service was warm and attentive, and the ambiance was elevated yet welcoming. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Saint-Malo!

Dinner at La Fourchette à Droite in Saint-Malo was an absolute delight. The food was excellent, beautifully presented, and full of flavor, with every course exceeding expectations. The service? Flawless — attentive, friendly, and perfectly timed.
It’s rare to find a place where both cuisine and hospitality reach such a high standard, but here they do. Probably one of the best restaurants in Saint-Malo — a must-visit if you want to enjoy the city at its finest!

Wonderful dinner! Superb flavors of regional ingredients. Preparations were fresh and full of subtle tastes. The Saint Pierre plus spring vegetable dish was sublime. Best lemon tartlet we’ve had in years. Would happily return.

This was the best meal that we have had in 3 weeks in France (Paris & Saint-Malo). Cozy, modern, relaxed, and just elevated enough to be very special. Reasonable prices. From the amuse bouche, to the entrée, to the plat, to the dessert, everything was delicious. Service very personal and friendly. Will definitely return next time we are in town!
Essential Tips for Dining in Saint-Malo
Dining in Saint-Malo requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure a smooth and satisfying experience. The city’s unique geography, tidal patterns, and seasonal tourist influx mean that a little preparation goes a long way. Below are the most important strategies to help you eat like a local and avoid the common pitfalls that often catch visitors off guard.
First, always consider the timing of your meal. French dining hours are strict, and Saint-Malo is no exception. Lunch service typically runs from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, while dinner rarely begins before 7:00 PM. If you arrive outside these windows, you will find most kitchens closed. For popular restaurants, especially those with sea views or Michelin recognition, booking a table several days in advance is essential, particularly during July and August when demand peaks.
Second, embrace the geography of the city. The intra-muros area is atmospheric but can be touristy and expensive. While there are excellent options inside the walls, venturing slightly outside to the Saint-Servan or Paramé neighborhoods often yields more authentic, better-value meals. A short walk along the beach or a quick taxi ride can lead you to neighborhood bistros where locals dine, away from the selfie sticks and multilingual menus.
Third, understand the local specialties before you order. A true Breton galette is made with buckwheat flour and should be paired with local cider served in a bowl. Seafood lovers should look for "plateaux de fruits de mer," which are best enjoyed at lunchtime when the shellfish is freshest. And do not leave without trying the local salted butter caramel, a staple of the region’s dessert culture.
Finally, be mindful of the tides. Saint-Malo experiences some of the highest tides in Europe, and the rhythm of the sea influences everything, including restaurant availability and atmosphere. A restaurant overlooking the beach offers a vastly different experience at high tide versus low tide. For a truly magical meal, time your reservation to coincide with the sunset and the rising tide, when the light dances on the water and the city’s maritime heritage comes alive.
Your culinary journey through Saint-Malo will be defined by the memories you make around the table. The city’s best restaurants share a common thread: a deep respect for the ocean and the land that surrounds it. Whether you are savoring a simple galette with a view of the ramparts or indulging in a multi-course seafood feast, you are participating in a tradition that has shaped this city for centuries.
So take your time, order another glass of cider, and let the rhythm of the tide dictate your pace. In Saint-Malo, the table is set, the catch is fresh, and the sea is always close by. Bon appétit.
