Saint-Malo draws visitors with its walled city, sweeping beaches, and deep maritime history, but you do not need a captain’s budget to eat well here. Beyond the fine-dining crêperies and seafood terraces facing the ramparts, there is a lively everyday food scene shaped by Breton tradition and the working port. Knowing where locals grab a galette, a bowl of mussels, or a perfectly crisp croissant can turn a simple lunch into one of the best memories of your trip.
The key to eating affordably in Saint-Malo is to look just a few streets back from the tourist thoroughfares. Prices drop noticeably when you step away from the immediate seafront, while quality often rises because the kitchens are cooking for regulars rather than one-time visitors. Lunch formulas, fixed-price menus, and early evening specials are the smart traveler’s tools for tasting local produce without overspending.
Breton cuisine is generous by nature, built around buckwheat flour, salted butter, shellfish, and cider. Even modest restaurants here take pride in sourcing ingredients from the surrounding farms and coastline. That means an affordable meal in Saint-Malo can still deliver the authentic flavors of Cancale oysters, farmhouse galettes, and salted caramel desserts without compromise.
This guide focuses on restaurants where you can eat well for roughly fifteen to twenty-five euros per person, depending on your choices. The selection balances crêperies, neighborhood bistros, bakeries with sit-down options, and casual seafood counters. Each place offers consistent quality, fair pricing, and a genuine sense of place rather than a generic tourist menu.
Because Saint-Malo is compact, nearly all of these addresses are reachable on foot from the old town, the train station, or the main beaches. That means you can plan your day around the tides, the ramparts, and a ferry to Dinard without wasting time or money on transport just to find a good meal. A little walking often leads to the most rewarding and affordable tables.
Below you will find fifteen dependable restaurants that prove eating in Saint-Malo does not have to be expensive. Use this list as a starting point, check daily specials when you arrive, and remember that the best-value meal in Brittany is often a complete galette, a bowl of cider, and a dessert crêpe shared slowly.

Went here twice during a recent trip to St Malo, absolutely incredible food and drink which was very reasonably priced, staff were amazing and helpful. Whole heartedly recommend going for breakfast here!
Kate Kellaway★★★★★
This is an outstanding little café in a medieval street. The menu is mouthwateringly delicious - original too. It is a gorgeous combination of French and more exotic tastes. We had the Sunday brunch and thought it miraculously good. I dream of a return for second and third helpings. BUT you do need to book. The place is small and deservedly popular

Perfect place for a breakfast, food is great and ingredients are fresh, I tried their "super detoxifyer" (or something like that) and it does help with transit and energy (its a bit rough tastewise tho... but I still recommand).
The atmosphere is very calm, its small and feels kinda like a cafe with great food, very chill.
Would recommand for breakfast, i don't know about other meals but since the food was great I would assume lunch and dinner are good as well.

One of the culinary highlights of our trip to Saint Malo. We ate here twice, returning because the coffee and food were so excellent. Lovely location and nice blankets outside! Thanks for two wonderful experiences 😊

Most delicious and wholesome meal. Very friendly staff. Small menu, but everything we had was delicious, so we'll worth a visit.

For people who love good food made by people who care. A small menu of absolutely delicious recipes made with love. No more expensive than anywhere else! If you're tired of Gallette, Crepe and Moules Frites at every turn, try this place, it's the real deal.
Jeremy Bailey★★★★★
Cafe Cargo Clute absolutely lives up to its Google rating. The owner was incredibly friendly and spent a good five minutes walking us through the lunch menu, sharing his personal favourites and suggesting thoughtful pairings. His passion for the café was obvious, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into curating the menu.
We had the lunch special and tried all three croques—each one was excellent. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the gazpacho was spot on for a warm, sunny day. Of course, we had to try the oysters too, which were fresh and juicy—an absolute treat. A great find in St. Malo—highly recommended!

The friendly Garcon out front informed my family of the wonderful selection of choices. There was something for all ages. The food came out very quickly. Such a cute little hole in the wall. Highly recommended. The Salmon was delicious. The Scallops and Leeks were to die for. And the kids enjoyed the Steak Omelette.

Best Crêpe I got in Saint Malo!
Big kiss for the service! Good luck

Great sunset view. Over priced for sure, but you’re paying the view. Food is alright. We waited 30 mins for a seat on a Friday and then another 20 for a drink after we ordered it. Staff seem unpleasant.
Room for improvement

It has been very challenging for me to find a lactose free fulfilling meal in France and this restaurant did a great job. I was able to enjoy a wonderful salad, delicious bread, and very good sea bream filet with potatoes and veggies. I’m very thankful when a restaurant understands and accommodates lactose free in their menu and delivers a high quality meal.

Would say this is an affordable place to eat with really good and fresh cuisine. I had the pan fried scallops for starters and they were genuinely amazing. Then had moules, which were as good! Extremely good portions, which makes it more affordable.
It was a little bit noisy but overall very good experience.

The place was nice with decor and cozy style .. but the beef really tough and raw a bit... i could not even cut by knife .... difficult to eat ! I heard a couple just had dinner here , they said food was good .. but my experience not really as they said .... the dessert i had crème brûlée.. it was nice ... anyway it was not good experience

Great ambiance, warm and attentive service, and an unforgettable meal. I ordered the Terre et Mer (surf and turf) crêpe, and it was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the smoked duck was rich and savory, and the buttery buckwheat crêpe was wonderfully crisp. Everything paired beautifully with a glass of local cider. A perfect taste of Brittany!
Borja Marazuela★★★★★
Best crépe I've ever had! The savoury crepes were very good but the sweet one with home made chocolate and Chantilly....out of this world! Also very cheap for the quality and the amazing service!
Anne Ngunu★★★★★
From the moment we arrived, the team offered exceptional service — the kind that makes you feel genuinely seen and cared for. They immediately helped us find a temporary parking solution since we had our baby with us, and that thoughtful gesture set the tone for the entire visit.
Inside, the staff brought a personal touch to everything: recommending dishes with sincerity, checking in with warmth, and creating a space that felt both comfortably relaxed and subtly luxurious. It’s rare to find a place that balances those two feelings so effortlessly.
The galettes were superb — beautifully prepared, generous, and full of flavor. Dessert was just as impressive, indulgent without being heavy, and all at a price that felt refreshingly affordable for the quality offered.
They truly lived up to their Google reviews, and in many ways exceeded them. A place that understands hospitality, craft, and heart. Highly recommended.
Daniel Banh★★★★★
Quite a busy spot so better to book in advance. Lots of options for galette and crepes, including vegetarian options. A nice spot for tea as well in the afternoon
Dennis Corsten★★★★★
Excellent place, very friendly and helpful staff, very friendly with our kids. The restaurant looks very nice. The meals are a treat for the eyes and taste wonderful. Very balanced flavours, it is listed and famous as a crêpe restaurant but their omelettes and salades are also very good. They also have a great selection of tea and have some nice wines if that's more for you.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this place when visiting the port of Saint-Malo.

We just spotted this place on maps. Thought it looked fun. Pleasant street walk through an unfamiliar part of St Malo.
When we got there with our dog 🐕 we asked, in French, if we could all go inside. The owner said that the dog could go in but we would have to stay outside, he was joking, and rearranged tables and chairs to suit.
The place is tiny but we were made welcome by owners and local customers. The food was fantastic, the best moules mariniers with fabulous twice cooked chips. My wife had a very tasty scallop gratin with a separate pot of rice. Excellent choice of bottled beers from local craft brewers.
Outstanding value!

Wauw, just wauw!
Best mussles Ive ever eaten in my life. Incredible, after we finished our first portion we immediately ordered another portion. Great paired with white wine (muscadet). The chips are also amazing! All over, give this place a shot! It's very small, but worth the wait!!!
Marta Marussig★★★★★
We (a family of tour) went there while on vacation. The personal was really really welcoming and they could also speak in Italian. The food was exquisite... genuinely one of the best dinners we've had while on vacation. The cozze were fresh and creamy and the souce was also delicious. Even the potatos (pomfrit) were perfect.
The place is relatively small, but it's even better because you feel at home and it's welcoming. The background music (70's - 80's rock) set the mood even more.
A fantastic experience.
Yulia Tokareva★★★★★
We were extremely lucky to find this tiny place among the many restaurants of Saint Malo. People who are working there are incredibly nice and welcoming, food is more than good. My husband and I felt like we were having dinner at a friend’s house, not in the restaurant. Absolutely unique experience. Highly recommend.

Amazing little cafe/restaurant. The moules frites were delicious and absolutely massive portions. All home made. I recomended the St.Chinian wine to accompany the food.

Le Berbere is a love, small and very popular restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful and the decor is warm and inviting. We ordered our drinks which came with a small bowl of spiced potatoes and olives. We then started by sharing the ‘chicken brick’ which is like a crispy pancake stuffed with a mixture of chicken. Then we had lemon chicken tagine and a lamb tagine with a side of couscous. The food was delicious but be warned the chicken and the lamb come with bones in.
We would definitely recommend eating here but don’t forget to book.

If you want to have a delicious meal, this is the place to go. The lamb was excellent, and the couscous with vegetable sauce was amazing. We absolutely loved everything. The service was fast and polite. I highly recommend this restaurant.

There is a reason why its 'Top Rated' Somewhat hidden on a quiet street inside the Intra-Muros but this place is a real gem in St. Malo. A friendly service and really delicious Algerian food. The tagines and merquez sausages are superb. Thank you for making our St Valentine dinner extra special.

A lot of positive reviews prompted our visit.
Unfortunately, we found this place didn't live up to them for us.
We had an initial very warm welcome, and then we were moved tables to accommodate a party of 6.
The brick starter was excellent.
Both the lamb tagine and couscous were very mildly flavored and I used an entire dish of harissa to try to liven it up.
The meatballs were very bland, and when I advised this I was contradicted and told I was the only person ever to complain. OK, well, possibly? These were replaced with two more merguez, not fully cooked, so had to be put in the mild consomme to cook a bit longer.
For a tourist place I guess it was OK, but we really were not impressed.
Cold wind every time the door opened, for all the people getting takeout.
Mana Neyestani★★★★☆
Is it ridiculous to go all the way to Saint-Malo — the capital of galettes, crêpes, and seafood — and dedicate a meal to couscous instead? Well, I’m exactly that ridiculous! After two days of galettes and oysters, I decided to give in to my deep love for couscous and tagine. I went to Le Berbère and was welcomed by friendly, polite staff and an excellent chicken tagine. After all, a little variety among all the Breton dishes doesn’t hurt!

We've always found Saint Malo a bit limited with restaurant choices outside the old town, especially mid week but we are so glad we found Les Gamins!! The night we ate there, their menu was very limited due to technical problems but it was all superb, including possibly the best egg mayonnaise that I've ever had. We will definitely be returning.

Had such a lovely experience here! We ordered two crêpes — one savory and one sweet — and both were absolutely delicious.
The savory crêpe was packed with flavor: perfectly cooked egg, rich melted cheese, savory ham, and mushrooms. Every bite had great depth and balance, with a crispy edge and soft center — just amazing.
The sweet crêpe was equally impressive — light, fragrant, and just the right level of sweetness. A perfect way to end the meal.
What made the visit even better is that the restaurant is pet-friendly! We were able to bring our dogs along, which made the whole experience extra special.
The cozy atmosphere and warm service made it even more enjoyable. Definitely a place I would come back to again. Highly recommended!

Amazing Creperier. Dog friendly (outside) and speak English which was amazing for my terrible French. Very friendly and accommodating, will be returning again 5*

Lovely little Creperie. Was very busy at lunchtime so we were lucky to get a table. Food was absolutely amazing, it was our first time trying gallettes and we were so glad we did. Crepes were very good, and apple juice and (homemade) cider were fantastic. Son made mistake of ordering chocolat which was dark so too bitter for him (may be usual for France, we didn't know), but daughter had Chocolat and caramel and was plenty sweet for her.

Small crêperie, in the corner of the street. They have places inside as well as a small terrace outside. Crêpes were very delicious and well prepared (the ends of the crepe crunchy as I like). We had a brut cider which was good addition to the meal.
We didn't try any deserts but I've seen they had hot milk with caramel ou beurre salé 🥰 which I would definitely try.
Practical Tips for Eating Affordably in Saint-Malo
Smart dining in Saint-Malo is less about finding the cheapest menu and more about understanding local habits, timing, and menu structure. These practical tips will help you stretch your budget while eating better, whether you are visiting in the busy summer season or during the quieter winter months.
Choose the lunch formula over dinner
Most restaurants in Saint-Malo offer a two- or three-course lunch menu at a significantly lower price than the same dishes in the evening. If you want to try a more polished bistro or seafood restaurant, book it for lunch and save the simpler crêperies for dinner.
Look beyond the ramparts
The streets immediately inside the old town and along the main seafront carry higher rents, which are reflected in menu prices. Walk five to ten minutes toward the Intra-Muros side streets, the Saint-Servan district, or the area near the train station to find better value and more local clientele.
Order the galette complète
A traditional buckwheat galette filled with ham, cheese, and egg is one of the most filling, affordable, and authentic meals in Saint-Malo. Add a bowl of cider and you have a complete Breton lunch for far less than a seafood platter, while still tasting the region.
Check the ardoise or daily special board
Many affordable restaurants write their best-value dishes on a blackboard rather than the printed menu. These daily specials often use whatever the kitchen bought fresh that morning, so they tend to be both cheaper and better than standard offerings.
Share a seafood starter instead of ordering mains
If you want to taste local oysters, whelks, or shrimp without paying for a full plateau de fruits de mer, order a small seafood starter to share alongside a galette or a simple fish dish. Many casual seafood counters and brasseries will happily serve a modest portion.
Avoid the noon rush on the main square
Restaurants facing the busiest squares often raise prices for convenience. Walk one street behind the main tourist flow and you will usually find the same quality of galette or mussels for several euros less, with a calmer atmosphere.
Bring cash for small crêperies and bakeries
Some of the best affordable spots in Saint-Malo are small family-run crêperies and boulangeries that may not accept cards below a certain amount. Keeping a little cash on hand means you can stop for a warm galette or pastry without hunting for an ATM.
Saint-Malo rewards curious eaters who are willing to wander a little. The city’s best affordable restaurants are rarely the loudest or the most photographed, but they are the places where the galettes are folded by hand, the mussels come from nearby bouchot farms, and the welcome feels genuine. A good meal here does not need to be expensive to be memorable.
As you plan your days between the ramparts, the beaches, and the harbor, let food be part of the exploration rather than an afterthought. Stop early for a pastry, linger over a lunch formula, and end the day with a simple crêpe as the tide rolls in. That is how Saint-Malo is meant to be tasted.
