From hidden jazz caves to sun-drenched terraces overlooking the cobblestones, Lille’s drinking culture is as diverse as its Flemish architecture. Unlike the café-centric boulevards of Paris, this northern French powerhouse thrives on a mix of rustic estaminets, cutting-edge cocktail laboratories, and lively student dives. The energy here is unpretentious, welcoming, and deeply rooted in the tradition of sharing a good story over a well-poured drink.
Finding the right atmosphere can make or break your evening in this vibrant city. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to sip a natural wine or a high-energy spot to sample local craft beer, the landscape is constantly evolving. The best establishments balance quality ingredients with a sense of place, offering a genuine taste of the local "ch’ti" spirit that defines the region.
This guide cuts through the noise to highlight the venues that consistently deliver on atmosphere, service, and liquid artistry. We have prioritized locations that offer something unique, from historic interiors that transport you back in time to modern spaces pushing the boundaries of mixology. You will find options for every budget and occasion, ensuring your night out in Lille is memorable for all the right reasons.
Navigating the drinking scene in a city known for its rowdy student population can be tricky if you don’t know where to look. We have focused on bars that locals actually recommend, avoiding tourist traps that rely on foot traffic rather than quality. These are places where the staff knows their product, the music sets the right tone, and the welcome is always warm.
Prepare to explore the subterranean vaults of the old town, the industrial chic of the Wazemmes district, and the bustling squares of the center. Each entry below has been selected for its distinct character and commitment to providing a great experience. Whether you are a beer aficionado, a wine lover, or a cocktail enthusiast, Lille has a stool waiting for you.
Let’s dive into the definitive list of the best places to grab a drink in the capital of French Flanders.

Ceo of food★★★★★
Ceo impressed : this is the best geek pub ive been to. The cocktail's are delicious and pop culture themed the establishment is also packed with pop culture elements if you have been on internet once in your life you will definitely find at least one reference. There's also a lot of boardgames that you can play if your friend is boring or date is going bad at least you will have fun with the games the ceo is very happy and is definitely coming back soon.

Returning here after many years and so glad to find this place still has all the wonderful vibes! Really lovely atmosphere 💙
Sadly many of the classic drinks were not on the menu anymore. I hope they'll bring back the pangalactic gargleblaster (and other Hitchiker's Guide themed drinks) to this bar whose name was inspired by it, after all 😉
Ps i think the gallifrey stickers in the tardis are upside down? 😅

A wonderful place for all fantasy and sci-fi fans. Lots of great characters, props and references to famous works. Lots of board games and a great selection of drinks. I really enjoyed my visit.

lovely bar with great choice of drinks, really good prices as well, popular with locals, we visited twice in same day but unfortunately didn't eat as don't serve during mid day hours Recommend a visit!

An image speaks a thousand words so I’ll let the video do the talking. Our table of 6 stopped eating, unsurprisingly appetites were gone. They tried to charge us in full, and only after an argument removed two meals. No other gesture made. Haunted by this experience…

Very fun bar for cocktails, all sorts of different creations with different themes.
I had the Peaky Blinders
Didn’t get to try it but there’s some big fish tank bowl cocktails for 3-10 people, if you’re with a bunch of friends, I would recommend

Friendly service. Super long list of cocktails but execution didn't appear to be there. Maybe an off night. Sausage was a nice snack. Don't be a hero and try eat one of the red chilli's in the cocktails - beyond hot!

Hands down THE best cocktail bar in town!!! Love the ambiance, the niceness of the staff and simply amazing drinks!
Everyone shoulddo themselves a service and go for a taste! Excellent service.

After having ordered more than 100 euros of cocktails, we ask for a 'caraffe d'eau', that is free even in restaurants in France. Well, we had to pay for their tap water 🤣 you lost a group of heavy drinkers!

All beers are 5 euro from draft says the sign outside. We order 2 Guinness from draft and have to pay 8 euro a pint .
In very small unreadable letters it says that it's not applicable on the Guinness..

Nothing Scottish on offer, place didn't feel Scottish either, quite a poor atmosphere. Barman was quite abrupt and rude.

Incredible evening of jazz! Just one man was working behind the bar, making all the cocktails and running to tables to deliver their drinks which was genuinely so impressive as it was so busy! Such a warm and friendly environment with amazing musicians.

Been for the “Live Jazz” concert on a Friday night.
Can definitely recommend the burning cinnamon cocktail, surprisingly its smell gives a nice atmosphere to the bar. Large selections of drinks.
The service was great and they spoke great English. Probably best bar I’ve been in Lille!

ordered the vegeterian shared mezze platter, unfortunately they missheard us and brought the one with chicken. after a few hours i started to have problems with my digestiv system and stayed up all night vomiting and more… as the only meat eater i was the only one affected..
otherwise the bar is a really cool place with a great ambience. but maybe the kitchen should reevaluate their meat-handling. not happy 🙂

My boyfriend wanted to catch the Arsenal match and even though they usually show rugby, the owner kindly put it on one of the TVs for us, which was a really nice touch.
They also pour a proper pint of Guinness—always a good sign. The whole place has that authentic Irish pub feel, with a warm, lively atmosphere.
Food-wise, I only tried the calamari rings and fries from the bar snacks menu. They were decent and hit the spot.
Overall, a great spot for atmosphere, drinks, and genuinely accommodating service. Would definitely recommend if you’re after a proper pub vibe.
Marisa Buller★★★★★
Nice vibes; the owner speaks English (and French, obviously). Nice spot to enjoy meal/have a drink during braderie season!
DL★★★★★
Opens early, of all the Irish pubs we visited, this was the only one to sell an Irish beer that wasn't Guinness. Good service and atmosphere, enjoyed the music.
Gareth Jones★★★★★
Went there two nights in a row which is a good sign. First night drinks and a couple of bowls of fries. Second night we wanted to eat. Turned up and pub packed. Hadn't booked but we're shown straight to a table. Service, food, atmosphere are great and would definitely go there again.
Rash Ka (The picky Indian)★★★★★
Love EVERYTHING about this place. I have been there too often to dislike it.
What I love most, however, is the finger food for 2 (or 4) that you can order. It's just fantastic.
The staff is very, and very genuinely so, friendly.
The food is brilliant.
The interiors are spacious and exteriors lovely.
Prices reasonable.
And it's really Irish!!
Doesn't get better.

An absolutely exceptional experience at Shelby Bar. Without a doubt, this establishment serves the finest cocktails in the city. The mixology is top-tier, and the outstanding quality of both the drinks and the food makes the €20-30 per person spend well worth it.
Beyond the excellent menu, the ambiance is perfectly curated, providing a fantastic, immersive atmosphere for the evening. What truly sets this place apart, however, is the service. The staff are incredibly courteous, professional, and attentive from start to finish. Every single aspect of the visit was flawless—there is genuinely nothing that could be improved upon. A definitive five-star experience across the board. Highly recommended.

Looked okay, but didn't spend the evening because they didn't broadcast the Worldcup game Netherlands - Japan.. Had the feeling the bartender didn't understand English very well. Nice atmosphere though! Couple guys watching rugby in there.
Harrison Collins★★★★★
A really nice bar which we went to when the England v Argentina match was on. The guy at the bar was super friendly, the food was really nice sort of bar grub; chips, nachos etc. Great atmosphere when it got packed later in the night.
DL★★★★★
Is it weird we travelled from England to France and end up in an English style pub? Maybe, but we wanted to see how it was. Honestly, we've been to a lot of pubs in England and most have lost their soul. The Queen Victoria has soul and is true to it's roots. There was some brews here I haven't encountered yet either, I am familiar with Charles Wells in general but this was the first time I tried Well's English Ale.
Mayra Velazco★★★★★
I love coming to this bar because I really feel in a bar in United kingdom. They have a catalogue with their own beers and with the explanation of each one of them. My favorite is the banana one, is not common to find a beer like that and is delicious. I just hoped they had more variety of snacks.

Probably the best craft beer bare we visited. Nice range of draught beers including hand pumped lambics. Bricked cellar also has seating.
Mark C.★★★★★
Had a great experience at this place. Excellent variety of beers on tap. The service was outstanding...extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It was one of the highlights on our trip to Lille. Would definitely visit again!
Geraldine Goycochea★★★☆☆
The beer is good, the service is weird. Good place but very confusing, since we asked for tasting glass and they told us they don’t do it but in the other I saw them. Feels like you are complaining to get something good. Anyway, there are better options than this one if you wanna enjoy good beers and good service.
Steve Morrison★★★★★
Favourite bar in Lille.
Ground level is a long bar with tables, the basement is large and suitable for bigger groups and there's an area upstairs for functions.
Loads of great beers of a variety of styles, mostly local, at standard local prices. Staff speak English (thanks) and are very helpful. The food available is a variety of snack sausages, tapenade, cheese and crisps. Very reasonably priced and suitable for sharing.
It can get busy, but this changes frequently and it's not always rammed. Great atmosphere. They showed a Lens game one of the times we visited, but TV wasn't on any other time.
Perhaps not a place to visit alone for a quiet drink, as it's mostly busy.
Jeroen de Jonge★★★★★
Very nice and good beer place. We had several local beers including some sour beers that were just amazing. They also have a ‘cask’ version of some if the beers which was a nice surprise. The saucisson at the bar was also very nice.
If I had to pick a place for a great beer night, this would be it.

Total scam, a 25cl glass of coke for €5 is a steal, even in Switzerland it doesn't cost that much!!! Avoid it, plus the waiter is unpleasant. I don't recommend this bar.
Ruchita Sharma★★★★☆
A charming terrace open out from a completely ordinary bar entrance of this bar in Old Lille. What is special is the calmness of the cathedral and non touristy feel for an apéro. Prices are fine, cocktails can be slightly non innovative though. Our tea came lukewarm a bit. But go for the terrasse.
S Ch★★★★☆
Great terrace behind with views to the cathedral. Always that I'm in Lille I go for a beer there.
Rash Ka (The picky Indian)★★★★★
Love this bar. Haven't eaten a meal here yet. Maybe soon.
However, simply being able to sit at the terrace that's looking on to the Cathedral is lovely.
The staff is very friendly as well.
Fan★★★☆☆
Beautiful from the outside and beautiful inside. The terrace view is gorgeous but the terrace itself is pretty boring.
Face mask is obligated to walk to your table, but the terrace is packed with chairs and you are literally sitting less than 20 centimeters to strangers which is not acceptable in these times.
We came for a beer but it was really expensive. This and the fact that it was uncomfortable with so many people made us leave. What a pity.

A great craft beer place. Good amount of seating inside and out. They serve fresh waffles with sweet and savoury toppings for food but I didn't try it. The triple filtered pale ale was excellent and I was told that the owner makes it themselves. The cherry beer was also good. Friendly service.
Ant Smith★★★★★
Love this bar - we come every time we visit Lille. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable while the selection of beers is excellent.
I have no idea why Google insists on calling it Beers Square in English.
Alejandro Robles★★★★★
I love this place. I've been coming regularly for several years. All the staff is and without exceptions have been so welcoming and kind. If you look for beers they have a large selection of drafts (around 20 different ones). Food wise, though they serve pancakes/gauffres both sweet and savory, it's not my cup of tea, so I'll abstain from commenting. Also on a sunny day, sipping on your favorite drink on the large urban terrace overlooking the Treille cathedral, it just makes my day.
Dennis May★★★★☆
Didn't eat there do zi cannot comment. Wasn't waited on so can't discuss service.
Atmosphere was decent fir a tap house.
George West★★★★☆
Modern and fairly large beer hall serving a range of beers as well as a local cider. Food maninly consists of pancakes, aweet and savoury.
Tips for Enjoying Lille’s Bar Scene
To make the most of your evening, it helps to understand a few local customs and practicalities before you head out. Lille is a compact city, making it perfect for a bar crawl on foot, but timing and ordering habits can affect your experience. Here are some essential tips to help you drink like a local and navigate the scene with confidence.
Embrace the Local Beer Culture
While Lille is in France, its beer culture is distinctly Belgian. Don’t expect to find only French wine here; instead, look for local brews like the iconic 3 Monts or a variety of strong Trappist ales. Asking for a "pression" (draft beer) is standard, and locals often prefer a rich, amber ale over a standard lager.
Check the Closing Times
Unlike major capitals, many bars in Lille close earlier than you might expect, especially on weeknights. While the student areas like Rue Solférino stay lively late, quieter bars in the old town may call last orders before midnight. Plan your route so you don’t miss out on a specific venue you wanted to visit.
Look for the "Happy Hour" Boards
Most bars in Lille offer generous happy hour specials, usually between 6 PM and 8 PM. This is the best way to sample more expensive cocktails or imported beers without breaking the bank. These deals often apply to house wines and standard spirits, making pre-dinner drinks very affordable.
Don’t Skip the Bar Snacks
In traditional estaminets and modern bars alike, food is part of the experience. If you are drinking strong northern beer, make sure to order some local cheese like Maroilles or a plate of frites. Eating while drinking is a local tradition that helps you pace yourself and enhances the flavors of the regional brews.
Venture Beyond the Grand Place
While the main square is beautiful, the bars directly on it often charge a premium for the view. Walk just a few streets away into the Vieux Lille or towards the Rue de la Monnaie to find more authentic, locally loved spots. You will usually find better prices and a more genuine atmosphere just outside the main tourist hub.
Exploring these venues offers more than just a drink; it provides a window into the soul of Lille. The city’s identity is built on resilience, warmth, and a refusal to take itself too seriously, traits that shine through in its hospitality venues. From the clink of glasses in a centuries-old cellar to the smooth pour of a modern cocktail, the memories made here linger long after the night ends.
So gather your friends, put on your walking shoes, and prepare to discover why Lille is considered one of the most underrated drinking destinations in Europe. Whether you are here for a weekend or a lifetime, the city’s bars are ready to welcome you with open arms and a full glass.
