15 Best Bars in Perpignan

Perpignan occupies a unique geographical and cultural sweet spot in the south of France. Positioned close to the Spanish border and the Mediterranean coast, it blends Catalan pride with French savoir-faire. This duality is reflected in its drinking culture, where you can sip a crisp local rosé in a sun-drenched square one moment and enjoy a vermouth with anchovies in a dimly lit bodega the next.

The city’s historic center, with its ochre and pastel facades, is remarkably compact. This makes it an ideal destination for a walking bar crawl, as you rarely need to walk more than ten minutes between venues. From the palm-lined promenades to the narrow alleys of the Saint-Jean quarter, the atmosphere shifts from polished to bohemian without losing its distinct southern warmth.

When exploring the local bar scene, timing is essential. Many establishments operate on the relaxed Mediterranean clock, opening later in the evening and staying lively well past midnight. While tourists often flock to the terraces near the Castillet, locals tend to favor the hidden squares and cellar bars that offer a more intimate glimpse into Perpignan’s social fabric.

The drink menus here are heavily influenced by the region. Expect to find an abundance of Rivesaltes, Banyuls, and dry Muscats alongside classic cocktails. Beer lovers are not left out, as the craft beer movement has taken hold in the Pyrénées-Orientales, producing some excellent local brews that feature prominently on tap lists across the city.

Dining and drinking often go hand in hand in Perpignan. Many of the best bars double as tapas restaurants, serving high-quality charcuterie, local cheeses, and Catalan specialties. Going out for a drink is rarely just about the alcohol; it is a gastronomic experience that celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage.

Whether you are looking for a sophisticated wine bar, a lively pub to watch rugby, or a quirky speakeasy hidden behind an unmarked door, the capital of French Catalonia has a venue to match your mood. To help you navigate the scene like a local, we have curated a list of the essential stops that define the city’s nightlife.

Really enjoyed the place last year. Fish & chips are very good. Beer is not as good this year. Everything just seems to have no gas, including the lagers.
Juan - el Goma (The Atari Show)★★★☆☆
The place ressambles an Irish Pub, with a wide selection of Malts both from Ireland and Scottland. They also have a descent selection of beers including whites, IPAs and stouts. But the service is rude and hostile towards foreigners. So i would skip this pub and go for the Craft Beer Pub 100 meters away. The good point is that they stay open later than other venues (12:30-01:00 during week days).

Very extensive beer assortment. The strawberry-flavored beer was my favorite. What I enjoyed the most about this bar is that we could play darts and watch sports and their big screens at the same time.

Great place at happy hour, wouldn't bother after... just being honest

nice place, good for watching sports and tasty pints. be careful though, some of the delirium beers are deceptively sweet and light on the pallet - but still 8% abv! nice busy of a boars head. i also indulged in some bar snacks at delirium cafe; a corndog, chicken tenders, and some chips. the corndog was worth a try, nice but a bit strange. the chicken tenders were delicious. the fries were a little soggy and disappointing. great atmosphere for watching England win a penalty shootout!

I didn’t really like that I was disturbed and asked to pay for my food while I was still eating at a table inside the restaurant, but the salad was very tasty and filling

Came across for the Rhinos vs Catalans game. Our first time visiting Perpignan. Had already identified the bar as the owner had already messaged on social media groups that we would be welcome, and this was particularly pleasing as fellow supporters had not been welcomed in other bars in the area. Staff we friendly and attentive and had very reasonably priced drinks. After the game there was and England football match on and the staff had reserved plenty of tables for supporters to watch the game who had been to the rugby match. Overall 10/10 experience.

Went to Perpignan to watch Glasgow Warriors play. Great weekend and we found this bar. Thomas, the owner, made us feel welcome and even opened the bar early so we could watch the rugby. Great selection of beer and food, well priced. Will go back again. Thanks Thomas for your hospitality.

Sports bar with a great atmosphere. More than enough screens and ability to have different events shown at the same time. Good selection of burgers on the menu, with a variety of other meals available.

Seemed the place to be on a Saturday night, very busy compared to nearby cafe's and Bars at about 9-10pm the patio area is covered by trees with lights. people also got food from the other restaurants in the little food court to eat here. I was surprised to find at least one Englishman serving at the bar. good drinks.

A beautiful place that deserves to be better known. However, there's a slight drawback regarding the live music, the quality of which varies considerably. While some evenings feature concerts by major local bands, others leave you wanting more, with groups of youngsters who sound like they've just rehearsed in their parents' garage. This is very disappointing, which is a shame because the place deserves better.

Good bar in slightly unlikely location. Sports bar inside, but the sound is quiet except for major games. Large private patio with huts and umbrellas. One of a small chain - there is another in the middle of Perpignan as well as other cities. Unusual arrangement with different beers on tap at each cluster of tables as well as a normal bar. Limited but good food: cheese, chacuterie and just started offering a few pizzas. Staff always friendly and welcoming. Atmosphere is warm, with a pleasant hum of conversation, though usually not too packed. Worth stopping in if you are cycling on the route from Perpignan to Toulouges and beyond or if you are in the area.

Had a fantastic evening at Fut et à Mesure in Perpignan Saint-Charles this Saturday! 🍻 A great selection of beers with plenty of choices, exactly what I like. Special mention also for the pizzas, which were absolutely delicious 😋 And a huge plus for the atmosphere during the rugby matches: a great, friendly, and passionate vibe, perfect for spending a wonderful time with friends! 🏉 Pleasant service, friendly staff, I'll definitely be back!

A really nice bar, I hadn't been before. The staff were very welcoming, I recommend it. Just one small thing: to get different beers, you have to join other tables. I would have preferred a single station with all the beers, without disturbing the people at their tables. But I really like the concept.

The best place to enjoy a beer in Perpignan. Best prices friendliest staff and positioned in the sun (with shade if required) in the main Square. A rugby bar run by Renette who tragicly lost her husband in 2018, after whom the bar is named. We came for a quick stop and stayed hours. No food is served but Renette was very happy for us to purchase Baguettes locally and enjoy them at her tables Just when we thought it could get no better Renette treated us to a free beer If ever back in Perpignan I know where I will stop for refreshment. Thank you Renette.

It takes something special to convince yourself to stay in Perpignan with Barcelona calling from the other side of the bor9der. After 800 km on bike through France we got stuck in the city after another messy crossing on the highway. A camping van's wet dream of honking.  Luckily we landed in Bar and Britz to wash down the irritation with a bottle of wine served by the towering Britz, a local rugby legend. The man himself has nothing to prove to his daily clients and anybody in the city with a bit of common sense will recommend his bar with its motley crew of sport enthusiasts, solemn bar flies and humorous wisecrackers. Outside, the sun scorches the square. Inside, the medicine gets mixed up as catalan pride is concocted with a good pinch of irony. Stayed two days. Had a great time. Got smashed.

Incredible place overall. The food is a 10/10. I went with my partner for dinner and we definitely want to come back another time. We recommend trying the mushroom terrine with truffle as a starter. And you absolutely have to try the chocolate fondant for dessert. We want to highlight Kereen’s service — she literally made us feel at home 🤍

Situated in a shady alley with a little breeze, this was the coolest place we could find when trying to escape the 38c heat! And what a lucky find. We had the fish of the day and it was delicious. As unlikely as this may sound, one dark and stormy winter evening several years ago, when virtually nothing was open and no one was out, I was drearily making my way home- head bent down and coat buttoned up against the wind and rain, having given up on the idea of finding a place to eat, I happened to look up, and lo and behold, not only was this place open, but a small sign outside proclaimed, “Special tonight- Rossini Burger!” I was stunned that anyone would think, even in France, that their burger was worthy of being named after Rossini… The place was empty, like the streets. Someone appeared from out back, served me a beer, and disappeared again, without saying a word, as I recall. To this day, having had burgers in some of the highest rated places around the world, including the Blackened Burger at Buddy Guy’s Blues Club in Chicago and a exceptionally tasty offering from a small place in Madrid, I’m still amazed by how delicious this burger was, and against all odds most definitely deserved the name Rossini! I spent a largely unpleasant year in Perpignan, yet singing old drinking songs with (seriously large) Barend in his colorful (little) Bar and Britz and stumbling upon this Rossini Burger on such a night (almost) made it all worthwhile.

Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Perpignan

Navigating the drinking culture in Perpignan requires a slight shift in mindset compared to larger French cities or typical tourist resorts. The city rewards those who embrace the local pace, understand the regional beverages, and know when to arrive. Here is how to make the most of your evening out while blending in seamlessly with the Catalan rhythm.

1. Embrace the Late Start
Do not expect bars to be buzzing at 7:00 PM. While you can find places open for an apéritif, the energy usually picks up around 9:00 PM or later. Locals often dine late, meaning bars fill up significantly after 10:30 PM. Arriving early is great for securing a quiet seat on a terrace, but if you want atmosphere, plan for a late night.

2. Go Beyond the Standard Wine List
While Provence rosé is famous worldwide, Perpignan is the capital of Rivesaltes and Maury. Ask the bartender for a glass of vin doux naturel (naturally sweet wine) as an aperitif or digestif. These fortified wines are unique to this region and offer a taste profile—ranging from nutty and oxidative to rich and fruity—that you simply won’t find on menus elsewhere.

3. Master the Art of the "Pintxo"
Many bars in Perpignan serve food, but the style is often Catalan/Spanish rather than standard French bar snacks. Look for pintxos (small snacks speared with a toothpick) displayed on the counter. You simply help yourself and the bartender counts the sticks at the end of the night. This is a fantastic, low-commitment way to eat while you drink and keeps you energized for a long evening.

4. Check for Seasonal Closures
Perpignan is a working city, not just a tourist stop. Many of the best independent bars and bodegas close for several weeks in August or during the winter holidays. Before setting your heart on a specific venue, check their social media pages or look for signs on the door. This is particularly true for the smaller, family-run establishments in the historic center.

5. Respect the "Quiet" Streets
The old town is primarily residential. While the atmosphere is festive, Perpignan is not a 24/7 party destination like Barcelona. When moving between bars late at night, be mindful of noise levels in the narrow alleyways. Locals appreciate visitors who treat the neighborhood with respect, and it helps maintain the welcoming vibe of the community.

The bar scene in Perpignan is a direct reflection of its identity: proud, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the land. It offers a refreshing alternative to the overpriced, tourist-trap bars found in many Mediterranean cities. Here, quality is measured by the generosity of the pour, the freshness of the tapas, and the authenticity of the conversation.

As you explore the venues on this list, take the time to chat with the owners and bartenders. They are often the gatekeepers to the city’s history and can point you toward a hidden local favorite or a specific vintage you have never tried. In Perpignan, the best nights often start with a simple glass of wine and end with new friends and a deeper appreciation for French Catalonia.
