12 Best Rooftop Cafes in Perpignan

Perpignan occupies a rare geographic and cultural sweet spot. Close enough to the Mediterranean to feel the sea breeze, yet framed by the distant peaks of the Pyrenees, the capital of French Catalonia offers a skyline that is as varied as its history. The city’s terracotta rooftops, palm-lined plazas, and the imposing silhouette of the Palace of the Kings of Majorca create a visual tapestry that simply cannot be appreciated from street level.

Elevating your dining experience here is not just about the food; it is about perspective. A rooftop café in Perpignan allows you to soak in the intense southern French sunlight while enjoying the relaxed, unhurried rhythm that defines the region. Whether you are seeking a quiet morning espresso or a chilled glass of local rosé as the sun dips behind the mountains, the vertical shift changes the entire atmosphere of your visit.

The local café culture is deeply ingrained in daily life, but the true gems are those that have managed to secure a view. From hidden terraces overlooking the narrow medieval streets of the historic center to modern lounges near the river Têt, these elevated spots offer a sanctuary from the bustling crowds below. They serve as perfect vantage points for people-watching or simply admiring the blend of Catalan and French architecture.

However, finding these spots can be tricky for visitors. Many of the best rooftops are tucked away inside boutique hotels or require navigating unmarked staircases that locals know by heart. While Perpignan may not have the sprawling high-rise roof decks of Paris or Barcelona, its intimate terraces offer a charm and authenticity that is distinctly southern French.

To help you navigate the vertical landscape of this vibrant city, we have curated a selection of spaces that prioritize atmosphere, quality of service, and, most importantly, a stunning view. These are places where the setting enhances the flavor of the coffee and the crispness of the wine.

Here are the best rooftop spots currently worth climbing for in Perpignan.

We feel so lucky to have found this beautiful apartment! We wanted somewhere that was easily walkable to the train station and the town centre and this was perfect. But then how amazing that the apartment is also super-stylish and comfortable! And that the host is so welcoming and so full of useful information and recommendations! We loved our stay, and after a busy day sightseeing it was wonderful to sit on the balcony and watch the sunset…..we’d love to return.

An absolute gem in Perpignan! The decor is straight out of a magazine—so stylish, unique, and just lovely to be in! Having the artwork and the English art & design library was such a fantastic bonus, not to mention that incredible rooftop terrace with views of Mount Canigou. Location-wise, it’s spot-on: super easy to walk everywhere between the station and city centre. On top of that, having a fluent English-speaking host with such amazing charm, warmth, and attention to detail made all the difference. A 10/10 stay—would come back in a heartbeat!

A fantastic place to stay in Perpignan! Beautiful decor and a truly exceptional welcome! The best features: 🌻Very comfortable bedding 🌻Ultra-functional kitchen 🌻Two terraces offering panoramic views 🌻Fan and ceiling light available for warm weather I would gladly return 👋

The house is perfect and truly comfortable. The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped. The double exposure keeps the rooms cool and ventilated even on the hottest days: Marlene had provided us with a thousand fans and even an air conditioner, but we didn't need it (it was August). Lots of small touches were made in organizing the spaces. But the most valuable thing was the advice from Marlene, a passionate expert on her city and the surrounding area.

An absolutely incredible brunch! Everything was perfect: delicious, generous portions, prepared with care. The value for money is exceptional, with very affordable prices. The establishment is immaculate, very clean, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The staff is incredibly kind, welcoming, and always smiling, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. A real gem, I recommend it 100%! I will definitely be back. Marvyn, Lena, and Mama

We ate for five and it came to €126. We ordered four burrata salads, a flank steak, two chicken tagines with fries, two French toasts, and a coffee, as well as four drinks including a cocktail. Everyone enjoyed their meal, although the tagine was less generous than I expected, it was still excellent. The music was a bit loud considering how busy it was, but apart from that, everything was great, and we received excellent service.

I organized my girlfriend's surprise birthday party at this restaurant, and it was a fantastic experience. The food was excellent, truly delicious. I also ordered a birthday cake, which was very reasonably priced, and it was amazing! Honestly, for the prices, the quality is really there. Everything was very good, and the atmosphere was great. A big thank you also to the waitress, who was just lovely. She took perfect care of us from beginning to end, very attentive and professional. We received a very warm welcome. I highly recommend this restaurant; it was perfect for a special evening. Thanks again for this wonderful time!

What a lovely experience. We came here for our birthday and it was so nice. The food was delicious. We loved that the menu was not complicated. Great wine menu. The mozzarella cheese plate was made in house and incredible! We tried a few appetizers and a couple mains. It was well worth it.

Excellent food in a special outdoor location. Most tables seemed reserved at lunchtime but we we're early and managed to get one. The menu is the choice of one starter, one main and one dessert i.e no choice of food just how many courses. The waitress explained each course. We had a starter and main-high quality ingredients and beautifully presented. Though portion size is relatively small. Extensive wine menu starting at around 35 euros. Would recommend for a unique experience.
Elena Wood★★★★★
Exceptional experience! We had dinner at Le 17 last night and it was so wonderful that it even surpassed our expectations (not our first time there). While at lunch time they usually offer fixed menu (always great, but we wanted to give our guests a la carte choice), dinner is a real showcase of "la creme de la creme" of French cuisine, The combination of delicious and inventive dishes, best regional wines, attentive and professional service and a magic courtyard framed by the walls of Perpignan cathedral is worthy of a Michelin star. Make sure that you plan and book in advance - they are not open for dinner every night and are very popular.

Had a great lunch here. With apparently a lot of returning guests. With this quality and this price I can understand that. Great fish cookery will certainly come back.
Ron Foley★★★★★
Excellent experience all around for lunch. A waiter and a co-owner brought over the chalkboard menu of the day which offered just 2 options: 3 courses (30 euro) or 2 courses (25 euro), but otherwise everything was set. The choice was dessert or no dessert. The soup, main course, and dessert were out of this world. The wine selection was thoughtful and just right. It deserves every amount of praise it gets and then some!
Magic Frank★★★★★
As every other reviewer has said, this was an absolutely excellent restaurant. First of all, the food. Everything was cooked to perfection. There were constant surprises in the flavours. There are lots of little extras between courses. The combination of ingredients was highly imaginative. This was first class cooking. We found the staff very helpful, friendly and patient ( translating from French to English!). The restaurant employs enough people to make sure that there’s no extensive waiting to be served or between courses. We went in the evening there were choice of three starters , threes mains and three desserts. Excellent selection of wines. It was simply outstanding.

The restaurant was very nice with a lovely view of the old door into the city. We ate crepes and the meat platter and finished with coffee and tea. Everything was very good, and I highly recommend them. They have a large crepe selection, we got the sugar and lemon and the Nutella and banana crepes. The prices here were very reasonable.

Fabulous location! Changed owners recently service not up to old standards. Been twice recently for early morning coffee, on both occasions they had run out of crossaints! Portions are a lot smaller than before. At weekends during rugby season the cafe is often frequented by visiting supporters.

Maybe the perfect place for an afternoon drink, light bite, coffee on a sunny (or not so sunny) morning. Lovely terrace and super cozy interior. Terrific staff—always helpful and smiling—even with our nearly non-existent French. We go back two or three times a week.

Having read the reviews we decided to take an outside table at Chez Henri. We were quickly served with drinks while waiting for our tapas. Although not busy, roughly an hour later the tapas had still not arrived. On going inside to check, we found the young chef hanging out the serving hatch laughing and chatting with the serving staff. Asking the waitress how long before our tapas would be served, she said she didn’t know! Still waiting ten minutes later, we decided to leave. The only positive was that the waitress had the good grace to apologise and not charge for our drinks.

Tips for Enjoying Rooftop Cafes in Perpignan

The difference between a good rooftop experience and a great one often comes down to timing and preparation. Because elevated terraces are highly sought after, especially during the tourist season, knowing the local nuances can save you from long waits or disappointing closures. Here is how to make the most of your time above the city.

1. Time Your Visit with the Mediterranean Sun
The sun in Perpignan can be intense, particularly between 12 PM and 4 PM during the summer months. If you are visiting a rooftop without adequate shading or awnings, opt for a late morning visit or an early evening aperitif. The "golden hour" here is spectacular, as the light reflects off the Pyrenees and the terracotta tiles, providing a cooler and more photogenic environment.

2. Embrace the "Apéro" Culture
While many rooftops serve breakfast and lunch, the true magic happens during the early evening. The French Catalan tradition of the apéritif is best enjoyed from a height. Order a glass of Banyuls, a local fortified wine, or a Pastis, and watch the city transition from day to night. Many rooftop bars offer small tapas or charcuterie boards specifically for this time of day.

3. Be Aware of the Tramontane Wind
Perpignan is famous for the Tramontane, a strong, dry wind that sweeps through the region. While it often clears the sky to a brilliant blue, it can make rooftop dining a bit breezy. Check the weather forecast before heading up, and bring a light jacket or scarf, even in the summer, as the elevation can make the wind feel cooler than at street level.

4. Book Ahead for Weekend Brunch
Space is limited on most rooftops in Perpignan, as the city’s architecture prioritizes historic preservation over expansive decks. If you are planning a weekend brunch or a sunset cocktail session, it is highly recommended to call ahead or book a table online. Walk-ins are often turned away during peak hours, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

5. Look for Hotel Rooftops Open to Non-Guests
Some of the best views in the city are owned by boutique hotels. Do not assume you need to be a paying guest to access their terraces. Many hotel rooftops in Perpignan operate as public cafés or bars during the day and evening. It is always worth asking the reception or concierge if the terrace is open to outside visitors, as this can unlock some of the most exclusive views in the city.

Taking the time to explore Perpignan from above adds a layer of depth to your understanding of the city. You begin to see how the ancient streets connect, where the green spaces breathe, and how the distant landscape shapes the local identity. It is a sensory experience that combines the taste of regional produce with the visual poetry of the South of France.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, spending an hour or two at a rooftop café provides a moment of stillness. It allows you to pause, look out over the Catalan flags fluttering in the wind, and appreciate the unique geography that makes Perpignan such a compelling destination.
