17 Best Seafood Restaurants in Bordeaux

Bordeaux is synonymous with world-class wine, but the culinary landscape of this southwestern French city extends far beyond the vineyard. Nestled near the Atlantic coast and the Arcachon Bay, Bordeaux has quietly become one of the country’s most exciting destinations for seafood lovers. The proximity to the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Atlantic ensures a daily supply of pristine oysters, mussels, and fish that define the local gastronomy.

Unlike the heavy, cream-based seafood dishes often found further north, Bordeaux cuisine leans toward simplicity and freshness. Here, the philosophy is to let the natural salinity and texture of the seafood shine, often accompanied by nothing more than a squeeze of lemon, a glass of crisp Entre-Deux-Mers white wine, or a slice of rye bread and salted butter. It is a city where the "plateau de fruits de mer" is treated with near-religious reverence.

The dining scene is remarkably diverse, ranging from historic brasseries that have served sailors for over a century to modern, minimalist tapas bars helmed by innovative young chefs. Whether you are looking for a luxurious sit-down dinner overlooking the Garonne river or a casual standing experience shucking oysters at a market stall, Bordeaux has a venue to match your mood and budget.

Navigating this abundance can be overwhelming for visitors who want to avoid tourist traps and eat where the locals actually go. The best restaurants balance respect for the region’s oyster farming heritage with a willingness to incorporate global influences, such as Japanese sashimi techniques or Spanish conservas.

To help you experience the very best of the Atlantic without leaving the city center, we have curated a definitive guide to the top seafood tables in the area. These selections are based on sourcing practices, consistency, atmosphere, and the overall value they provide to discerning diners.

Below, you will find the essential spots that define Bordeaux’s maritime culinary identity.

A nice restaurant serving good seafood and a terrific fix price dinner set. Good value and the langoustines, oysters & prawns were all excellent. They also have a good wine list🍷 and a nice selection of beers 🍺

We had dinner at this restaurant during our first night in Bordeaux. We had to wait quite a while before we were given the menu. The waiter didn’t speak any English, which wasn’t really a problem because we used Google Translate. We ordered a fish platter, oysters, and a bottle of wine. The food was good, but the bottle of wine never arrived. After waiting for 30 minutes, I went inside to ask about it. I kindly spoke to the waiter in my very poor French, and he seemed to understand that I was asking for the wine. Unfortunately, more time passed and the bottle still never came. In the end, the wine was removed from the bill, but there were no apologies or any attempt to explain the situation. Too bad this happened on our first night in Bordeaux.

The seafood was fresh and we enjoyed the food! Service was amazing. Thank you.

We had a good dinner here. Just a little bit of unhappiness because we were not great fans of cold mussels and clams and was hoping to have them replaced on the seafood platter even with a supplement, but the chef was being temperamental and did his own thing. Anyway it was nice dining out with a view of the Gironde, the seafood was fresh and the service was very friendly if busy.
Chris Thomas★★★★★
One of our top meal experiences over the last two weeks in France. I wanted oysters and Tommy wanted bouillabaisse, and both were amazing. He also had escargot which was great. The staff were wonderful and Jonathan was awesome. Highly recommend this restaurant.

The food is really good, the staff is lovely, and the service is also quite fast. The portions are good and fair per person. The prices are fair generally, but not when it comes to the fish & chips since the portion of the fish is a bit small considering the price. Special mention to the Thai mussels which were very tasty and a bit spicy for those who like this combination.
Angela Khalil★★★★☆
Good placement, good food, good service, for those who like seafood. Right in front of you is St Michel, the dessert (mascarpone thing) is also delicious. The sardine balls plate is great. The staff were sweet and very pleasant! I recommend!
Antonio Jiménez Ballesta★★★★★
Very fresh and nice food. The owner and the workers both were extremely kind and they recommended their best options. We had mussels and oysters and they were amazing. We were at the terrace and all of a sudden started to rain a lot. Was amazing that they quickly managed to relocate us to the inside. 10/10

Amazing location in a beautiful square with such a great vibe. The staff were kind and the food was honestly delicious. I ordered simple dishes, but their flavors really surprised me.. perfectly balanced and full of taste 🙂‍↔️

The food was great! We had oysters, crevettes, squid in parsley sauce and half crab. The parsley sauce was out of this world!!! We will try to recreate it at home. The server was a little moody because we arrived 5 minutes before opening time, which was 5 minutes before our reservation 😀 but then he quickly turned his mood around and put his game face on and sent us to our table. The restaurant is small, rustic, could use a a little pick me up, but it offers an authentic experience.

Loved our meal at Le Tout du Cru in Bordeaux! This charming little seafood spot on the quai de Bacalan serves incredibly fresh oysters, shellfish and fruits de mer. The place has a relaxed, authentic vibe with simple decor and a real neighbourhood feel. Service was friendly and efficient, and the staff were happy to guide us through the menu and wine options. Everything we tried was top quality and full of flavour. Great value for such fresh seafood in Bordeaux. Perfect for a casual lunch or dinner focused on quality produce.
Rina M★★★☆☆
MAKE SURE YOU BOOK IN ADVANCE BEFORE VISITING!!!!!!! The restaurant looked empty when we arrived, but we were told it was fully booked. In reality, it seemed they were operating with just one person serving, which likely explains why they can’t take walk-ins. The oysters and prawns were very good and easily the best dishes we tried. However, the rest of the food was fairly underwhelming and lacked flavour. Service could be more welcoming. The server came across very arrogant and unfriendly, and turning away potential customers despite having empty tables seems like a missed opportunity for the restaurant.
Goldy Wong★★★★★
Very authentic small seafood restaurant! Understaff! Only 1 server for over 12 tables. Fresh seafood! Highly recommended

I visited as a tourist and was craving seafood, so I made a reservation for one. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and I felt comfortable since they spoke English. The oysters were great, and the octopus risotto was absolutely delicious! Thank you for a wonderful meal!

The staff were incredible. We booked in advance inside but due to roadworks were seated outside. Not a problem. The seafood was incredibly fresh, salads amazing. Sweet potato chips a little over cooked. Swordfish was some of the best I’ve ever tasted. My wife had the seafood platter and was not disappointed. We used the contact us form to request a birthday cake but that did not make it to their mailbox, however they improvised on the night with a candle in an ice cream which did the trick. Alcohol free cocktails were great. Overall a wonderful team who coped with our broken French and spoke great English. The vibe inside is nice, the chef has a great choice of music!
Alinda Sfk★★★★★
It was just amazing! Great oysters! We also had the ribs and they were excellent! And also the tiramisu fantastic❤️🥰 The place of the restaurant was amazing as well and the service. Well done🙏🏻🙌
Florencia Fontanarossa★★★★★
Perfect spot for oyster, specially if you missed the market. Service is good and friendly.
Ricardo Macpherson-Ortiz★★★★★
Best oysters in Bordeaux. Chorizo croquettes are unbelievably good and the truffle croque monsieur yum yum yum. Also their French gin is strong.
Paris Az★★★★★
Staff was super sweet, their food was very good. It was our first and only time eating oysters while in Bordeaux so I don’t have others to compare it to (their oysters were more briny/salty than ones in the US) but still tasted great and fresh. Their croquettes were amazing…did not expect that at a seafood restaurant. Overall great experience.

I loved spending the afternoon here on a Sunday, it felt like the whole of Bordeaux came to spend a sunny morning at the market enjoying people produce and the atmosphere. This was a fantastic spot for people watching, the fish soup was incredible and the rest of the seafood was incredibly fresh and delicious. This felt like a Bordeaux stable that brought in friends and families of multiple generations in a busy, hustling setting. Can’t wait to go back!
tina hh★★★★★
Lovely lunch sitting outside the market watching the world go by. Extremely reasonable in price. You can get 6 oysters and a wine for €11. The oysters were devine, fresh & plump. The fish soup was super tasty. The prawns have previously been frozen but they were still good. Charcuterie board was also really good. House wine perfectly quaffable. All in all very good and an authentic experience, majority of people there were French so always a good sign.
Ria Jane Thornton★★★★★
Best meal I had in Bordeaux! Fresh prawns, great serving, fish soup was to die for. Yum!!
John Trinkl★★★★★
Chez Jean-Mi is highly rated online and it’s no wonder. The seafood was absolutely delicious, the service fantastic and the atmosphere enjoyable. After 2 pints and 1 pinasse (an assortment of the sea for 1 person), I was fully satiated! The shrimp, oysters, crab and snails, all nicely nestled in a boat of seaweed (or kelp) were completely fresh and tasty. And to top things off, co-owner (I know I’m going to butcher her name because I am having trouble reading her writing) Kasume?!? shared a taste of Picon Bière, which I had never had before. She was so sweet and gracious as a host and the Bière was delicious! I would eat there daily if it wasn’t 5000+ miles away! Sadly, my wife was unable to attend due to health reasons but knowing her love of seafood, I am certain she would agree with me…definitely worth a visit. Can’t wait to return next time we are in Bordeaux!
Lewis Askew★★★★★
This is one of the easiest 5* reviews I’ve given. It’s everything you want in a market bistro: local produce, friendly staff with excellent service and outstandingly fresh food. The oysters were just excellent. No. 3 and No. 4 had their own merits and were so fresh and flavourful. The soup was a perfect example of a French fish soup and the crab was some of the freshest I’ve had in all of Bordeaux. Highly recommended.

It's all about the mussels, and you'll get a big pot of them, with 7 different preparations to choose from. We had the Basquaise, which has tomatoes, chorizo and a delicious smoked paprika taste, and the Creme, which was really delicious with a creme fraiche and white wine sauce. My grandson said the frites were the best he's ever had. There are a lot of options if you don't like mussels. The service was perfect and the outdoor seating lovely on a warm summer evening.
Eric★★★★★
The service was excellent with the 2 ladies being very kind and friendly. Food was delicious and tasty. We loved the mussels as it’s not the huge meaty kind. Escargot was delicious and not chewy. The fish soup was full of flavour although would have been nice to have some fish/seafood in it. The chocolate fondant was also delicious.
Kari Q.★★★★★
October 2025 Best mussels I've had in France so far. My only issue is we aren't here long enough to try them all! The service is very friendly and fast. The outside patio was wonderful on a beautiful day. Returned in May 2026 to try some more. I ordered the curry mussels but received something else, they were sooo amazing I ate them all with absolutely no complaint. My husband had the fish and chips which were OK, he was jealous of my mussels. Highly recommend 🇨🇦
Julia H★★★★☆
Delicious mussel restaurant in a lovely location right by the busy boulevard - perfect for people watching. We were on our honeymoon and Axel the waiter was so very friendly and had some rum shots with us! Thanks so much and merci Axel.
Jean Sarmiento★★★★★
Food was excellent. The mussels were juicy and plump- add salt to your preference. The escargot was so tasty and the sauce so flavorful. Oysters so fresh. Steak was tender and flavorful- pepper gravy so delicious. Foie gras spread very good too. Now the service -the lady was perfect —friendly, very very attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. The ambiance was cozy and warm- highly recommend.

Quintessential French cafe for sitting on the sidewalk and watching Bordeaux pass by. The Sancerre by the glass was a little flabby, but the petite chablis was on point for seafood. The razor clams were very good and lots of them, not too sandy. Pass on the Madagascar shimps, over cooked and dry. Monkfish was excellent. Medoc #3 oysters were really tiny, stick with Arcachon as always. They have a huge seafood platter if you want to try everything, reasonable prices. Service was very good, you can pay from a QR code if you have decent network.
Helena Kwong★★★★★
Just stumbled into this little seafood spot by chance, and it was such a great find! The place is incredibly clean and has a really relaxed atmosphere. I ordered the mixed grilled fish, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly, and it paired wonderfully with the vegetables, mashed potatoes, and some really good bread. If I ever visit Bordeaux again, I will definitely come back!
Kerry Edwards★★★★★
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The sardines were delicious and the seafood platter outstanding. We appreciated the coup de Champagne and the bottle of Entre-deux-mers was served ice cold. The service was excellent and the staff really nice. Very good value for such quality. The atmosphere wasn't great. We sat inside and were close to the other tables.
Karen Alexandra Beauty★★★★★
Very nice seafood and fish dishes. Great wines at reasonable prices! Lovely atmosphere in a bustling part of town down a vibrant side street with a number of friendly happy bars and eateries. Would highly recommend!!
K Aye★☆☆☆☆
The staff that served us was not helpful at all; somewhat RUDE. Food is good but not that you want to go back again and again. We had grilled brill, actually it is pan fried t(last one available even at the first seating of the evening. Said it’s on Sunday and it is “end” of the week). The room is full of “fishy smell”. No one is attentive and you are on your own. Staff are running around even though it is NOT that busy. May be short staffed. Oysters, snail (proper one not just put some precooked snail in the old shell, you know what I mean) and brill that we had were ABOVE average, not fishy at all. Overall, bad service is not compensated for “above average” food. DO NOT try there. Not worth it, please don’t let your precious time spoiled, better spend your valuable time somewhere. Wait for the reply, you will see somewhat unappreciative response to previous BAD reviews as usual.

This place serves really good food. The trout was delicious! We even went here two days in a row. They waiter was quick and had everything under control whereas the busboy was super friendly, charming and attentive. Good staff! The only downsides would be that I think it is a tiny big too pricey and that when you sit very close to the trashcan outside, you might get a lot of flies (to the restaurant: please get a lid or so!)
Lindsay Ryback★★★★★
Wow! Favorite eats in Bordeux. The Korean calamari was perfection. Lovely experience! Highly recommend- and may even go back myself this same trip! 🫣🤭very cozy inside too!
Dirk Röhrborn★★★★★
We had just a wunderful fish & seafood dinner, with Ceviche, mussels and sea bass. Highly recommended.
Vera Bin Zheng★★★★★
Calling this the best seafood restaurant in our district is definitely not an exaggeration. Compared to most traditional seafood restaurants in Bordeaux, the dishes here are much more creative, and each one is excellent. We also ordered a freshly grilled sea bass, served with green vegetables, hazelnuts, and chickpea purée. The fresh ingredients and simple seasoning really brought out the flavor of the fish. The restaurant is run by a young and energetic team, who are not only friendly and welcoming but also highly professional. I’m sure we’ll be coming back again.
Elaine Travels★★★★★
Excellent seafood in the center of the Chartrons area. Beautiful outdoor patio and comfortable interior. All the young servers were professional and proficient enough in English to explain or understand your order. Went there several times during my stay and loved the large Oléron oysters, calamari, spicy boulots (sea snails), huge steak frites with bone marrow, and their perfectly cooked swordfish. Even their small anchovy toast appetizer was big enough for a meal! Great wines by the glass to accompany your food at very reasonable prices. If you love seafood, this spot is a great place to stop in Bordeaux.

Can recommend if you are into good seafood. Place does mussel really well! Had a blast for lunch. We shared and it was well enough!
Laëtitia D★★★★★
Excellent time there at this famous mussels spot! Mussels were delicious, we all ordered different sauces. Fries were yummy. Only non mussels options are the beef steak or the charcuterie board. Their staff is always friendly and helpful. The manager is even friendlier and make you feel welcome. Couple of wine options, generous pour. Loud environment as you’re within the market, however love this low key ambiance.
Erdem Tosun★★★★★
Perfect place to enjoy a truly delicious lobster. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, making it easy to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. The staff is outstanding, genuinely sincere, friendly, and attentive, which immediately makes you feel welcome. The concept is beautifully simple and focused: lobster done right. We tried the whole lobster and the lobster pasta, and both were absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The wine list is decent and well chosen. While the menu selection is limited, it is always worth asking the waiter if you have something specific in mind. The owner keeps a few additional bottles at the bar and does his best to arrange the ideal pairing, which really elevates the experience. Prices are very fair for the quality offered, which makes this place even more appealing. A spot I would happily return to for both the food and the people.
GT Bird★★★★★
The BEST! Service was awesome and our server was very friendly to us, speaking English very well. Thank you! The service was amazing! The muscles were absolutely delicious of both versions that we ordered. A nice white wine together was also very good. We're so happy we took the 25-minute walk to get there. If you're anywhere around Bordeaux, I highly recommend you try this place.
Pia Kersten★★★★★
My favorite place in Bordeaux! We even went back a second time which I rarely ever do on a trip. I'd recommend making a reservation as it's a small place inside. The service is great and the food even better. The shrimps as a starter come with a really good garlic dip and the half lobster with fries is great too. But the absolute highlight is the lobster pasta, I could have that every day! The creme brulee is pretty amazing and with the perfect crunchy top. Summarizing, I'd be a regular here if I lived in Bordeaux.

Wonderful meal - freshest fish, fabulous vegetables and charming staff team. Can’t recommend highly enough! Simple decor, but one of the best meals we had whilst in Bordeaux. Highly recommend.

Excellent restaurant, food was very fresh, I had a seared tuna with fresh vegetables and my husband had a mixed paella with fish, seafood and chorizo. This was the best food we ate in Bordeaux!!! Service was very good, Magali and the chef Aymevc were very attentive, highly recommend Bonnie mer!!! One of the best seafood I had in my entire life. I loved the decoration too that you can see the fish and their ceiling decor, very funny and unique. The taste was absolutely divine and well presented. Prices were very affordable for the high standards that they deliver. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Terri Hanson Mead★★★★☆
We had a late lunch here and enjoyed some paella and a dessert of fromage blanc and strawberries. We enjoyed both on the terrace. Our server was funny and lovely and accommodates my aspiring French. We will be going back to purchase some fruits de mer and enjoy something else from their menu since we were overwhelmed by the seafood choices and simply went with the paella.

This is a place with history. The restaurant manager was kind enough to show us old pictures of the place and tell us a bit about the story. Apparently, it used to be more of a music & party place and the previous customers still come here, but now for to have food and remember the good memories. We had 2 dinner menus, steak & fries, and fish & beans here. My menu included deviled eggs, hake fish & rice, and chocolate mousse. I also tried beef carpaccio, shrimps, and crème caramel from my friends. The deviled eggs were too mustardy for me (I like mustard but it didn’t really have any other taste). The carpaccio was good. Shrimps were pretty tasty too. Crème caramel was my favourite. The mousse was also good though. I enjoyed the fish & rice as well.
Marta★★★★★
The restaurant has a very good looking inside, but also a patio on the square. The serves are very attentive and kind, I appreciated the service very much! The food was also quite quick to arrive. I have to mention their bread: it was exquisite and had a fantastic texture! I had the poêlées de Saint-Jaques à la provençale: the scallops were a considerable size and incredibly tender, served with a delicious sauce and a confit tomatoes risotto that was also very good! The chocolate liegeois was also absolutely fantastic.
Ken Y★★★★★
Very good location right in front of the Porte d'Aquitaine. The dishes were lovely too, and I especially loved their beef carpaccio—delicate, fresh, and full of flavor.
Rahul Sagar★★★★★
Fanatic food, great ambience- super service! Try their deserts- amazing! Take a private boat from Cap Ferret and land close the restaurant and walk up - best way to reach there.
Sarah Teko-Folly★★★★★
We enjoyed a delicious meal of seafood, fish and steaks. The homemade rolls were warm and wonderful. However, it was the service which made the experience stand out. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch our waiter’s name but he was friendly, professional and incredibly personable. He was so patient and engaging with my kids practicing their French as well. Thank you!

How to Eat Seafood Like a Local in Bordeaux

Understanding the local dining etiquette and timing can significantly elevate your experience when exploring Bordeaux’s seafood scene. The way locals order, pair, and consume their seafood is deeply tied to the rhythms of the nearby ocean and the wine culture of the region. Before you make your reservations, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the unwritten rules of the table to ensure you get the freshest offerings and the best value.

1. Respect the "R" Rule for Oysters
While modern farming techniques have made oysters safer to eat year-round, traditionalists in Bordeaux still swear by the "R" rule—eating oysters only in months containing the letter "R" (September through April). This is when the oysters are at their plumpest and least milky, as they avoid the summer spawning season.

2. Master the Plateau de Fruits de Mer
If dining with a group, order a shared seafood platter rather than individual starters. A proper plateau comes in tiers featuring whelks, prawns, langoustines, and various oyster sizes. Start with the small, sweet oysters and work your way up to the brinier, larger varieties, using the vinegar-shallot mignonette sparingly to avoid masking the flavor.

3. Pair with Local White Wine, Not Red
Despite Bordeaux’s fame for red blends, seafood demands white wine. Look for a dry, mineral-driven white from Pessac-Léognan or a zesty Sauvignon Blanc from Entre-Deux-Mers. The acidity cuts through the fat of the fish and complements the iodine of the shellfish without overpowering it.

4. Embrace the "Entrée" Culture
Unlike some cultures where lunch is a quick affair, Bordeaux locals treat lunch as a sacred pause. Many top seafood restaurants offer a "formule" (set menu) at noon that is significantly cheaper than dinner. Booking a heavy seafood lunch is the most economical way to experience fine dining in the city.

5. Look for the "Bassin d’Arcachon" Label
When ordering oysters, specifically ask for those from the Bassin d’Arcachon, particularly the village of Cap Ferret. These oysters have a distinct hazelnut finish due to the unique mix of fresh and salt water in the bay. Restaurants that proudly list the specific farm or producer on the menu are usually the ones that care most about quality.

6. Don’t Skip the Fishmongers
Some of the best seafood in Bordeaux is found not in a restaurant, but at the city’s covered markets, like the Marché des Capucins. Many stalls offer on-site shucking and cooking services. If you are staying in an apartment, buying fresh fish or prepared seafood here to enjoy with a bottle of wine is a quintessential Bordelais experience.

Exploring the seafood restaurants of Bordeaux is about more than just satisfying hunger; it is an immersion into the maritime culture that has shaped this port city for centuries. From the briny pop of a freshly shucked oyster to the delicate flake of a line-caught sole meunière, the flavors here tell a story of the Atlantic’s bounty.

As you wander the historic limestone streets, let your senses guide you. Whether you choose a bustling brasserie with white tablecloths or a tiny raw bar tucked away in the Chartrons district, you are participating in a tradition that predates the city’s famous wine châteaux. Take your time, order another glass of white, and enjoy the maritime soul of Bordeaux.
