Bordeaux is world-renowned for its wine, but the city’s culinary scene offers a depth that goes far beyond the vine. While duck confit and canelés often steal the spotlight, the capital of Nouvelle-Aquitaine is also home to a thriving steakhouse culture. The region’s proximity to some of France’s finest cattle farms, including the prestigious Blonde d’Aquitaine and Bazas breeds, ensures a steady supply of exceptional beef.
For the discerning traveler or local gourmand, finding the perfect cut of meat is a matter of pride. The city blends traditional French butchery with modern grilling techniques, creating a diverse landscape of dining experiences. Whether you are looking for a classic entrecôte with shallot sauce or a dry-aged tomahawk cooked over open flames, Bordeaux has a table waiting for you.
However, navigating the sheer volume of brasseries and bistros can be overwhelming. Not every restaurant that serves beef is a true steakhouse, and quality can vary significantly from one street to the next. You need a curated guide that cuts through the noise and leads you directly to the best meat in the city.
This guide focuses on establishments that prioritize sourcing, dry-aging processes, and precise cooking methods. We have considered not only the quality of the beef but also the atmosphere, wine list, and service to ensure a complete dining experience. From historic cellars to chic, modern grills, these venues represent the pinnacle of Bordeaux’s carnivorous offerings.
The following selection is based on rigorous research, local reputation, and culinary expertise. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a perfectly seared ribeye, you will find an option to suit your palate. Prepare to discover the venues where the quality of the meat is treated with the same reverence as the region’s prestigious wines.
Without further delay, here are the definitive top choices for steak lovers in the city.

The wait was worth it for the great quality and value of the steak! They only have steak (rich creamy sauce) and unlimited fries (crispy outside and moist inside) The extra steak was presented on top of a tray heated by candle light below to keep it warm while you are eating. The entree value also came with a yummy salad too. They have a small selection of good wine (really great price) and cocktails and delicious desserts. The decor was comfortable with nice French design. We were lucky to get a table by the window and the waitress was super friendly. This is a walk-in only with a long que (20 to 40 min wait) but it really worth it!

For those in Bordeaux craving a quintessential steak frites experience, L'Entrecôte remains a remarkably reliable institution. They are famous for their singular, specialized menu: a perfectly cooked steak served with their signature sauce and unlimited, free-flow fries. When paired with a bottle of their house wine, it is clear they have perfected the balance of quality, value, and efficient service. Its prime location near the Place de la Comédie makes it a fantastic dining option after a day of exploring the city center. Be prepared for a wait, as the queues are a testament to its popularity, so I recommend arriving slightly ahead of peak meal times to secure a table.

If you are looking at the reviews to see if it’s worth coming here to eat despite the long line, I’d say it’s an enjoyable meal as long as you don’t raise your expectations as high as the hype suggests.
We went on a Thursday evening, still with a long line but I soon discovered that the restaurant has around 4 floors so it can occupy many people. As expected, they will ask you how you like your steak done once seated.
They serve a simple salad, nothing crazy but at least it was an adequate appetizer without filling the stomach.
The steak was served to us around 20 minutes after being seated. I thought the serving size was generous. As someone who doesn’t gravitate towards fries, theirs was quite good. Very flavorful. I chose medium doneness for my steak. I appreciate the thin cuts of the steak. The steak was not the most tender but it was not tough either. The sauce was addicting without overpowering the steak. I think this is their selling point as usual steak dishes (especially outside of France) are not served in a herb butter sauce. It gave a subtle pesto taste. My only comment is that the dish wasn’t hot when served. We were full and couldn’t finish the fries.
We ordered profiteroles for dessert. It was a nice dessert with a not too rich and not too sweet chocolate sauce. Nothing too special though.
We enjoyed our dinner. Though let it be said that we don’t usually eat out for steak too often so we don’t have much to compare with but it is noticeably better than what I’ve had before. I think it is worth trying but it’s not a dish I would crave for. I’ve tried L’entrecote in Toulouse 2 years ago and I prefer this location more. Better service (though not outstanding) and bigger place.

This is a restaurant with good value for money. I've been several times, and yes, the queue is unavoidable. The approximate wait time varies between 20 and 40 minutes. So if you decide to go here, don't go hungry.
Once there, there's only one menu: steak (entrecôte) with fries (all you can eat). I recommend asking for the steak medium-rare, as strangely enough (bizarre but been several times ), if you order it rare, it tends to be more rubbery.
The sauce they put on the meat is very good and they offer local wines at a good price.
If you're lucky, you might get a seat by the window where you'll enjoy a gréât view.
Just would like to mention that meat portions are each time smaller. Guessing it’s the crisis!

This is the 3rd of this style restaurant that I've been to (after Cafe de Paris in Geneva & Relais de Venis son Entrecote in Paris) and it was the best so far. Food was amazing, price was lower, & tables are not crammed together.
A friend told me to get there at 11:45 for the noon opening & that turned out to be a hair too late. When they opened & started seating people they filled up literally just before getting to us. So we had to wait another hour or so, but it was worth it.

We wanted the best steak in town and we got it. We had the Spanish cote de boeuf that was aged for 60 days. Great flavour, cooked and seasoned perfectly . The pepper corn sauce was to die for. Made with real pepper corns and home made. We also had the burrata and tuna starters which were very tasty. The staff were really friendly. Shout out to Dillon and co for making us feel welcome despite the late hour. It was cool outside but a bit noisy with the traffic though.

Honestly the best steak ive ever had in my life.
I picked out the Uruguayan steak and it was a beautiful cut. When it came out, the crust was incredible and inside it was cooker perfectly. It was so juicy and the fries and peppercorn sauce were as good. Highly recommend, best steak in Bordeaux.

We had an absolutely incredible experience at this place! It’s a true paradise for steak lovers — they offer so many different types of steaks and even explain the story behind each one: where the cows are from, and what flavor profile you can expect. The level of detail and passion is amazing.
We chose a steak from Finland, and it was simply outstanding — perfectly cooked, full of rich flavor, and honestly one of the best pieces of meat we’ve ever had. Every dish we tried was delicious, and the whole dining experience felt special from start to finish.
If you appreciate quality meat and want to learn more about it in the most engaging way, this place is a must. Highly recommended, 100%!

Truly an amazing experience!
The service, the wine and the food were all exceptional. If you like steak, you cannot miss this restaurant. We made a reservation in advance which I would recommend.
The truffle mashed potatoes were one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten in my life.
Do not miss this restaurant if you are in Bordeaux!

An excellent place if you have a craving for good cuts of beef done perfectly by a superb crew of cooks and grill masters. The steaks all come with fries and salad and we had a good bottle of wine and some bone marrow. Only downside is we were too full for dessert

Oh my days - in my opinion - a must to book if visiting Bordeaux and love steak. Cooked perfectly - may look a bit pink to some but they obviously can cook to your taste - however maybe not be a great shout if you like well done steak, would ruin the meat cooked on the bone. Chips (pomme frites) were mega tasty.
It may at first look a wee bit expensive but worth every penny and once converted from Euros was a lot cheaper than a steak specialist restraunt in the UK.
Absolutely scrumptious - and will absolutely be bringing the burning of herbs hack back home

I was the first seating at 6:30 and it felt like the entire place was mine. The service team gave me the utmost attention, catering to what I wanted to drink, start my food order with and with my main entrées. I ordered tart the Baltic ribeye as well as the Champions With an egg yolk. The steak was cooked perfect the starter insides complemented the meal wonderfully and I even splurged with a pre-and a glass of red wine. Great ambience, the service team caters to your ever need. I would highly recommend this place.

We had a great time here. Staff are very welcoming. Our server was able to explain the steaks and wines to us really well in English, we appreciated that a lot as there is a lot of options. The food was excellent, the steak was perfectly cooked and the restaurant itself had a really good atmosphere.

We ordered a medium cooked steak and it was more on the rare side. The meat and fries werent tender at all. Also the meat didnt have a special taste, the portions were generous though. I should also point out, a tasty creamy sause on steak plays an important part in the meat taste, they had wine sause, pepper and cheese sause. The pepper sause wasnt spicy and was abit bitter. The wine sause was also mediocre. I wont recommend the steak here but the restaurant was very beautiful and the personnels were so friendly and kind.

Ô QG is a fantastic spot in Bordeaux. The beef steak was absolutely magnificent—perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Big restaurant, the servers who greeted us were polite. Some parts felt tacky, but overall there was a pleasant atmosphere. The steak was reasonably priced and they provided good portions, but the cuts could have been better, as there was a lot of sinew in our steaks. Fries were decent. Overall not bad if you're in the area

Sorry, maybe I'm too spoiler, but the beef was though, too though. Normally I eat 1kg on my own, so we ordered the 2 persons-steak. It didn't sit well. The waitress and other personell were great though. But you Come for the foodprocessor first, will never go here again and would not recommend it.

We had an amazing dinner experience at Lenny‘s place. After a warm welcome, the delicious food was served within no time. We recommend the veal kidneys, the tartar and the mixed meat plate. Everything comes with fresh fries and salad. The wine was served generously and the selection goes really well with the served food. The dessert was delicious. Not too sweet, not to big portions. Really nice to finish the evening off. Thanks you Lenny for hosting us. We had a great experience. If we could, we would give 5+ stars.

This is a MUST visit when visiting Bordeaux! The food is cooked (grilled!) to perfection, the staff and owners are friendly and welcoming, and the prices are more than affordable.
We dined here for dinner and then again for lunch on our last day. They remembered us and welcomed us back like we were regulars.
It was also very helpful that they speak English as my French is pretty basic.
I HIGHLY recommend starting with the goat cheese and honey salad. OMG how is it so delicious?!?! The steaks are delicious, the sauces sensational, and the wine is top notch.
Special thank you to Ines for making great recommendations and giving us outstanding service.

Such a great meal and experience. First off want to start with Carla, our server who made it so amazing! Normally in France you don’t get the best service, but she went above and beyond. Such a lovely experience and we probably will come back just to say hi to Carla again too.

We came at this place on Sunday at 7 pm. There was almost no one at the terrace, so we asked to sit outside and took a table for 4 pers instead of two because of the sofa (we were a couple). They were rude and said we can’t do that because later there would be more people (despite the fact we said we wouldn’t stay there longer than an hour). But we said okay and took another table. Two minutes later they asked us to move again because of other guests coming. We decided not to spend our time on that treatment and chose a place nearby. Do not recommend this place.

Ordered a steak cooked medium, but the inside was almost fully gray and the crust was burnt. The fat was just chewy, not melting in your mouth, as described on the menu. Fries and salad were tasty, the staff was very friendly, but the steak was decent at best.

Wow! Decor is on point Staff friendly
The order concept is brilliant as no pressure from waiting staff.
We all had pizzas, which were good, I personally would recommend the truffle pizza 😋
My only complaint would be the temperature of my beer which on a extremely hot day was on the warm side.
Yes would recommend it in this super location.

We came to try out the menu for Lobster Week and ended up positively surprised!
We ordered lobster and fried lobster poulets. Both were very tasty and the portions were very satisfying. Additionally, to every main dish, there is an option of unlimited chips, vegetables, and potatoes.
The only thing that bothered was the price. I my opinion the quality of food was not in accordance with it's price.

However the overall service was great, our waitress was very friendly and professional

Here you definitely notice the really touristic middle of the city effect... We came to Bordeaux specially because my friens loves vine, but in this reastaurant there was no vine with a reasonable price (all like 4x the price in the store), so we ended up drinking beer.
The meat was great and the location looks really nice, but the toilets are ugly as hell and far off from beeing clean.

This is my favourite place in Bordeaux. The owner is the most passionate person I have ever met - he effuses his passion for the restaurant, his cooking and the history of this place that has been in his family for generations. Food is cooked in the old style and amazingly delicious - potatoes with cream and foie gras were a real highlight. Go for the ribs - they are incredible!!

Fabulous experience chez L’entrepote. The moment you cross the threshold you are greeted by the restaurateur/front of house man/chef originale & one of the most entertaining storytellers this side of the Garonne!
Hervé weaves a tale of mystery, harking back to the era immediately post World War 1, reckoning that his great grandfather (a man he points to with great swagger), was the inspiration for the culinary tour de force that is L’entrecote.
We descended downstairs into a beautiful cavern lined w large blocks of the Bordelaise sandstone. The menu which is brief & to the point comprises essentially of 4 mains: Ribs, Gamba prawns, vegetarian salad or Steak.
The food was phenomenal, the ribs are a hefty 1kg of tender meat resting in a brown sugar & soy paste. The accompanying salad was fresh, & the baked potato was a succulent mix of carbs ensconced in a foie gras & mustard sauce.
Gamba prawns were equally fresh, you could taste the saltwater.
Hervé gives very thorough explanations of the menu, his cooking methods & general life story as the night winds on. This may not be to everyone’s liking, but his raconteur skills are certainly enjoyable if you have nowhere else to be.
Dessert; we plumped for the Irish coffee as he recounted how he learnt to make it in a Dublin pub over 40 years ago.
Definitely worth a visit. The food is moreish, the venue a blend of old antiquities, candles lining the stairs, and grand chandeliers. A culinary highlight from our trip to Bordeaux.

Without question the best restaurant I’ve visited in Bordeaux. The owner is incredible, very friendly and welcoming plus speaks English which was a huge bonus for me.
Food is on another level to any place I’ve been to worldwide for ribs.
Must visit place if you’re in Bordeaux.
10/10!

Very friendly owner whom interact with his customers and explain the history behind his dishes. The resturant is nicely decorated with a warm ambience. The owner provides some small dessert and dishes for my 2 year old daughter for free! However the rib which my wife and I ordered are abit dry and tough (likely he uses high heat to cook the rib).

A lovely little restaurant, that feels like a place locals go. We had a delicious meal, and worked with the staff to overcome language barriers. Staff were patient and helpful, particularly with our children. Offered drawing stuff straight away. Only 10 euro for a kids menu.
Our meals were delicious. We had the Camembert for starter - amazing. Baked with garlic, lovely salad.
Best burger I have had in France. Omg - yum. If I could fit it in, I'd order it again.
Side salads dressed well. Entrecôte cooked well and served with yummy duck fat potatoes. Even gave me butter for my bread.
For dessert- Crème Brûlée and Profiteroles. WOW. Profiteroles were the best I have ever had.
Wine - La Petite Lune - Bordeaux- how can you not? Perfect accompaniment to a lovely

Fabulous staff. I had a small mix-up in communication about how well I wanted my meat cooked. Thankfully, he took my dish back and redid it. The food was delicious.

Incredible Argentine food in the heart of Bordeaux!
Le Nacional delivers perfectly grilled meats full of flavour. Great wine selection, and the service was friendly and helpful.
Warm, lively atmosphere without being too loud. A must-visit for meat lovers and anyone looking for a unique dining experience in Bordeaux!
📍 Highly recommended. Will definitely return!

Such an amazing place. Meat lovers, this is your place. Vegans, keep walking!
We had the Argentinian sausage with chimichuri. Absolutely delicious. It was followed by the “onglet” served with a choice of home made chips, mash potatoes or salad. The meat was very tender and cooked to perfection. We also ordered a very good wine from chilli. Service was very efficient and professional. Overall, it was an excellent experience.

The restaurant catered very well for our very large family group. The staff speak French/English & Spanish. Duck gizzards needed slightly more seasoning, “onglet” cooked “saignant was on point & the “purée was excellent.
The restaurant has a comprehensive wine list for every budget.
During our stay in the region, our group agreed tonight we were served the best steaks and purée so far!

Great place and great service. Got there at 8:30pm and it was busy but not packed yet they couldn't fit us in so we had to reserve a table for 9:30pm. This want a ploy to create buzz as when we arrived at 9:30pm there were people queuing outside waiting for tables to become free and our table was ready and waiting, luckily.
The food was tasty and recommended wine was great, although I think it would be hard to pick a bad red in Bordeaux. Would definitely go back there if I were to return to Bordeaux.

Very understated. Food is amazing. Seems pricey until your plate arrives. The chefs understand about top ingredients, cooked simply. Best meal in years and highly recommended. Staff are knowledgeable, attentive and "tres agreeable". We had turbot - whole - but you should have seen the beef!

Good yakiniku fix in bordeaux, yummy cuts of pork and beef. The caramelised fat on the pork was awesome. It even has a Japanese style washroom, complete with auto was and motorised seat cover.

You don't choose your menu, all you get to choose is your drink of the day. The menu consisted of edamame followed by grills of ham and beef options that comes with vegetables. Every table has a grill attached and you grill your meat and have it fresh. Really good restaurant. They have a Japanese toilet with heated seats. My girlfriend loved that about the restaurant strangely .. hahaha
Nice and helpful staff

high quality product with a convivial experience to cook at your table. Service was impeccable and a decent wine list to match the Wagyu available on the menu.
Wonderful discovery of the Japanese cuisine that is not sushi and a focus on the carnivores!

Sensational food. From start to finish the food is just a conveyor belt of high quality. We did one of each set menu and the Wagyu did not disappoint. Vincent is great and attentive. We really enjoyed the whole experience and will certainly come back when visiting Bordeaux.

Well located at the end of a bustling street, Le Grill au Thym has an excellent menu with delicious food, skillfully plated and presented. The advice on the menu offerings and wind pairing was wonderful, the service exceptional and the food very well priced for the quality and quantity. We were 4 people and left very happy and full. We highly recommend a visit to this resto!

Very well situated in the heart of the vibrant district, this French restaurant has good quality food and great service! Their steak is particularly delicious as it's their specialty and the portions are quite big. If you take a menu, you will definitely be full at the end of the meal!

Simply fantastic. A three course meal for 19 € with friendly, attentive service. We were walking by looking for a place to dine and at we were welcomed in at 6:45 prior to their 7pm opening. We ordered the lamb and steak, and each was very good. Definitely worth recommending.

The main steak on the menu was terrible. We expected a nice cut and received off cut which barely resembled a steak.
How to Choose the Perfect Steakhouse in Bordeaux
Finding a great steakhouse in France requires a slightly different approach than in other countries, as the terminology and cuts may differ from what you are used to. The French butchering system cuts meat differently, often resulting in leaner, more muscular pieces that require specific aging to tenderize. Understanding these nuances will help you order with confidence and avoid disappointment when dining out.
Look for Regional Breeds: The best restaurants will proudly advertise the origin of their beef. Look for mentions of Bœuf de Bazas (a highly prized, PDO-protected breed known for its marbling) or Blonde d’Aquitaine (a local breed that is leaner but very tender). If the menu specifies the farm or the breed, it is usually a sign that the chef cares deeply about the product.
Understand the Aging Process: "Matured" or "Dry-aged" (maturée) beef is not always standard in France, but the top steakhouses in Bordeaux are increasingly adopting this practice. Dry-aging concentrates the flavor and breaks down the muscle fibers. If a restaurant advertises a specific aging period, such as 30 or 45 days, it is a strong indicator of a premium establishment.
Know Your Cooking Temperatures: French cooking temperatures run differently than in many English-speaking countries. If you ask for "medium," you might receive meat that is closer to rare by international standards. The safest bet is to ask for à point (medium-rare to medium) or bien cuit (well done, though this is often discouraged by chefs for premium cuts). Clarify your preference clearly with the server.
Evaluate the Sauce and Sides: A true French steakhouse elevates the plate with classic sauces. Look for sauce au poivre (peppercorn), sauce béarnaise, or the Bordeaux classic sauce aux échalotes (shallot and red wine reduction). If the restaurant offers house-made fries (frites maison) and a fresh salad, you know they are paying attention to the full meal, not just the protein.
Consider the Wine Pairing: You are in Bordeaux, so the wine list should be exceptional. A great steakhouse will offer a variety of reds, from affordable Côtes de Bordeaux to prestigious Saint-Émilion or Médoc grand crus. Do not hesitate to ask the sommelier for a recommendation that balances the fat content of your specific cut with the tannins of the wine.
Dining out in Bordeaux is an experience to be savored slowly, never rushed. The French approach to a steak dinner is leisurely, allowing you to enjoy the ambiance, the conversation, and the meticulous preparation of your meal. By keeping these tips in mind, you will be well-equipped to select a venue that matches your expectations for quality and authenticity.
Ultimately, the best steakhouse for you depends on the atmosphere you crave. Whether you find yourself in a rustic cellar in the historic center or a contemporary dining room near the Garonne river, the common thread is a deep respect for the region’s agricultural heritage. Make a reservation, order a bold red wine, and enjoy one of the most satisfying meals Bordeaux has to offer.
