Perched dramatically on the southwestern coast of France, Biarritz effortlessly blends aristocratic elegance with the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean. Once a humble whaling village, it was transformed into a glamorous seaside resort in the 19th century after Empress Eugénie fell in love with its rugged charm. Today, it remains a premier destination for surfers, foodies, and culture seekers looking for a refined yet adventurous escape.
The unique geography of the Basque Coast provides a stunning backdrop of golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and turbulent turquoise waters. Unlike the manicured beaches of the French Riviera, Biarritz offers a wilder, more invigorating atmosphere that feels distinctly authentic. The city manages to balance its imperial history with a laid-back surf culture that defines its modern identity.
Visitors are often drawn to the seamless blend of outdoor activities and urban sophistication. You can spend the morning riding world-class waves, the afternoon indulging in Michelin-starred dining, and the evening strolling through art-deco casinos. It is this versatility that makes the city suitable for romantic getaways, family vacations, and solo explorations alike.
Navigating the city is a pleasure, as most major landmarks are within walking distance of the bustling city center. The compact nature of Biarritz allows travelers to experience a dense concentration of history, architecture, and natural beauty without the need for extensive travel. However, knowing which sites offer the most authentic experience can save you valuable time.
Whether you are planning a summer beach holiday or a cozy off-season retreat, Biarritz offers a robust itinerary for any weather. From religious landmarks and maritime museums to coastal hiking trails and local markets, the city is rich with points of interest that go far beyond the sand. The culture here is deeply tied to the Basque heritage, which influences the local cuisine, language, and architecture.
To help you make the most of your visit, we have curated a comprehensive list of the essential sights and experiences. This guide covers the iconic landmarks that define the city’s skyline, as well as hidden gems that offer a deeper connection to the local way of life.

Legendary Virgin Mary Statue perched on a rock
This is a beautiful place to come to, regardless of if you are a Christian or not. The scenery is fantastic, and the beauty of the surrounding makes this really worth it.
It is a bit of a trail but super nice, specially in summer if the weather is good. Highly recommended.

A delightful place to reach with a short nice walk and to enjoy at sunset. Surely there are always tons of tourists, but still, the place is attractive and full of photo opportunities.

A very nice vantage point to see the miramar beach and plage de la Côte des Basque. Very nice views during sunset. Adventurous swimmer and divers often jump up from here to the sea.

A detailed and interesting aquarium that's well worth the visit. A wide collection over multiple floors, looking right over the waterfront - you can easily walk here from the city centre, and the approach by sea is very picturesque. You enter on the low side, and emerge floors above on the high side, and it's right by the Virgin on the Rock so you can walk out there afterwards. Has a café and decent gift shop. Note, if french is not your first language, you must open a QR code at each exhibit to get English or other languages.

Definitely worth seeing specially if you have kids . Lots of displays , several animals and different species. Sea turtles , sharks , stingrays, morenas , eels , congrio, several fishes all different colors , medusas , seals , corals , lobsters, crabs , octopus , turbot and more . . Aquarium has 4 main levels ,including a terrace where if you’re lucky you can see how they feed the sea turtles .it also has a shop with lots of souvenirs. Also has an onsite cafe “Olatua Biarritz “ operates seasonal as a cafe and snack bar terrace . If you’re in Biarritz must see ,ticket prices are not too expensive definitely worth it

This aquarium is a gem! It's not colossal, but very beautiful display of jellyfish, turtles and seals. The toilets are clean. This aquarium is situated in front of a beautiful rock beach. However the parking spots are a bit difficult to find.

Nice aquarium in the center of Biarritz between two big beach... One of the nicest where I was... Ticket is 17e per person... Open until 7pm...Not so crowded, you can buy ticket and come in... There is so much different species of water animal... It's quite place and you can relax and enjoy in view... People who work there is kind and helpful if you have question... All recommendations for visit and take some nice pictures and videos if you are in Biarritz

This Aquarium is amazing!! I went on Saturday, January 31, 2026. It was recommended to buy tickets in advance; however, we did not. We got there about 30 minute after it opened. No wait, we had plenty of time to look, wait, and read about each exhibit there. The longer we were there, the more people were coming in. I took so many pictures and videos. I will return!

It was fairly free. 2hrs to 3 hrs for the visit. Great experience for someone who has not experienced scuba diving or surfing. Fascinating history of surfing and informative documentary with great interactive technology.
Katella DeBolt★★☆☆☆
Was greatly disappointed by the fact that in all the exhibits and all the videos and everything I experienced, there was not a single female or a person of color on film/talking. Apparently everything in the ocean is done by white men? I just think it’s pretty sad in the year 2026 to have a whole place devoted to learning about the ocean and only have one type of scientist represented. As a female and a scientist I was offended.
The lines for everything were long.
The VR headsets were all foggy and difficult to see anything in.
In the bathysphere experience plastic whips your legs and it hurts. Why on earth do they have the bathysphere break down ? What is th point of that?
The headset actually fell off my head during the Seaborg experience. Too much shaking and turning over. Just show a nice 360 of the city without the jarring and flipping and crazy maneuvers!
Definitely do not recommend.

Fun place for both adults and kids 🤗 Very entertaining and educational at once, with a very welcoming and informative staff who guides you in a great way. Highly recommended for a visit if you are in the area and want to take a couple of hours off from the beach and get a great feel and respect for the ocean 🤩
Melinda Riniker★★★★☆
Good Programm for when it rains. Certain things you can only do once, like VR surfing, … but its really interesting and you will definitely learn more about ocean life and surfing.
Adam W★★★☆☆
Go on a weekday if you can. The museum is pretty average, it’s mostly VR and surfboards hanging on walls. The Short VR movies are fun but the quality is outdated. They have this VR rollercoaster hidden in the back but it’s kind of lame, you just fly around the coast like you’re a drone. I feel like the place could be so much better. Save it for a rainy day if you have nothing else to do.

This is undoubtedly one of the main attractions in Biarritz. The entrance fee of 5 euros should be acceptable as a touristic place. There is no lift so you have to climb up to the top by stairs. It took roughly 10 min for me.
The view from the top was fantastic. If the weather is fine, it’s worth giving it a try.

Nice walk along a partially coastal track... Views to the sea are beautiful and there is access to the lighthouse on scheduled days.. unfortunately, the works for sea defence seem to be ongoing forever
Sieme Sijmons★★★★☆
Pretty cool place, but not the cheapest. It costs €5 just to go upstairs, but the view makes up for it — you get a full panoramic view of Biarritz.
The stairs are quite steep, so it's not ideal for anyone who struggles with regular steps. I'm almost 2 meters tall, and everything felt really low, so be careful when walking around — mind your head!
Dirk★★★★★
Well maintained functioning lighthouse. Interesting history. Easy walk up the hill to the lighthouse. But then you need stamina. 🙂 only limited number of people allowed up which is nice when you are already up. Haha. 5 Eur per person.
Amazing view. Nice breeze in summer but probably chilly in winter.
Easy way up via road/sidewalk.
Look at the structure in the rocks and read about it. Quite some engineering history.

The tunnel is safe, with no risk of collapse; I've verified this with my extensive knowledge in the construction industry.
Turn on your headlamp on bad weather days, or you might find yourself in the emergency room sooner than expected!
With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of the little tourist train and its vintage carriages!
Laura★★★☆☆
The tunnel is an alternative for pedestrians and cars to reach the coastal area. Although it's lit from above, it's very dark to walk along. On the left, however, are steps that lead to the viewpoint, and continuing past the small park at the top, you can descend via another short flight of steps to the Fishermen's Wharf.

Collection of pictures, posters, clothing and other artifacts detailing the 1000 year history of Biarritz. It is in the converted Anglican Church ans features only part of the material assembled from donations of the major families of Biarritz since 1980 when it was founded. Some English information provided. Could benefit from more displays and additional space. Parking is a challenge.

Such a lovely museum run by brilliant staff. It has a beautiful Porch dedicated to those who fell in the south-west of France during the Peninsular War, including “Wellington’s Master Builder of Military Bridges” Lt. Col. Henry Sturgeon who died at Vic-en-Bigorre on 19th March 1814, husband of Irish-born Sarah Curran from Newmarket in County Cork.

La fée de la sérénité★★★☆☆
The Port des Pêcheurs beach in Biarritz, in the Basque Country, is a tiny cove nestled in the heart of the fishing port, just below the Atalaye. This charming spot offers a truly authentic setting with its crampottes (old fishermen's huts with colorful shutters) and fish restaurants, far from the hustle and bustle of the city's larger beaches. It's a small, sheltered sandy area, ideal for a quick dip at high tide, but swimming is generally unsupervised. So please be careful and enjoy this beautiful setting.

The Rocher du Fioup is a rock formation located along the Biarritz coastline in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, near Miramar Beach and the Grande Plage. Tips for Visiting Biarritz
To ensure your trip is as smooth and enjoyable as possible, it is wise to prepare for the specific rhythms of this coastal town. From parking logistics to ocean safety, a little local knowledge goes a long way in maximizing your experience. Here are five essential tips to help you navigate Biarritz like a seasoned traveler.
- Book Accommodation Early for Summer: Biarritz is one of the most popular beach destinations in France, and hotels fill up months in advance for July and August. If you plan to visit during the peak season, secure your lodging as early as possible to avoid inflated prices and limited availability.
- Embrace Walking or Cycling: The city center is notoriously difficult to navigate by car due to narrow streets and limited parking. Leave the car at your hotel and explore on foot, or rent a bicycle to easily travel between the beaches, the lighthouse, and the Halles market without the stress of traffic.
- Respect the Ocean’s Power: The Bay of Biscay is known for its strong currents, powerful waves, and sudden rip tides. Always swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards, and pay close attention to the colored flags on the beach. If you are a beginner surfer, always book a lesson with a certified local surf school.
- Visit the Halles Market Before Noon: To experience the true culinary soul of Biarritz, head to Les Halles in the morning. This is when the atmosphere is most vibrant and the produce is freshest. Go hungry and sample local specialties like Ossau-Iraty cheese, Bayonne ham, and fresh Atlantic oysters.
- Pack for Microclimates: The weather in Biarritz can change rapidly, even in the middle of summer. Mornings can be overcast and cool before the sun burns through by the afternoon. Always carry a light jacket or sweater and sunscreen, as the ocean breeze can mask the intensity of the sun.
Biarritz is more than just a stop on a map; it is a sensory experience that lingers long after the sand has been shaken from your shoes. The sound of the waves crashing against the Rocher de la Vierge, the taste of a warm gateau Basque, and the sight of the sunset melting into the Atlantic create a tapestry of memories unique to this corner of France.
Whether you come for the adrenaline of the surf or the tranquility of a thalassotherapy spa, the city meets you where you are. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to be both a playground for the elite and a sanctuary for the everyday traveler. Once you leave, you will likely find yourself planning your return to the elegant shores of Biarritz.
