15 Historic Sites in Biarritz

Biarritz carries its history with a quiet confidence. Unlike purpose-built museum towns, this Basque Coast resort reveals its past in layers—through weathered stone, grand facades, and the salty air that has shaped its identity for centuries. From a whaling village to an imperial retreat, and later the birthplace of European surfing, the town’s evolution is written directly into its landscape.

Understanding this history transforms a simple seaside holiday into something far more meaningful. The elegant villas, the rugged cliffs, and the ornate chapels are not just scenic backdrops; they are monuments to the fishermen, empresses, and artists who defined the city’s character. Walking through Biarritz is like walking through a living archive of coastal ambition and aristocratic leisure.

For travellers who want to go beyond the beach, exploring these historic sites offers a deeper connection to the region. You begin to notice the architectural details that separate Belle Époque opulence from traditional Labourdine Basque design. You hear the echoes of whalers in the old port and the whispers of royalty in the grand hotels.

This guide focuses on the essential historic landmarks that tell the story of Biarritz. Each location offers not only visual beauty but also a tangible link to a specific chapter of the town’s heritage. Whether you are a history enthusiast or a curious visitor, these sites provide a compelling reason to look up from the ocean and into the past.

We have curated a list that spans religious monuments, imperial architecture, maritime history, and art deco glamour. By visiting these locations, you can trace the transformation of Biarritz from a rugged maritime outpost to the sophisticated "Queen of Resorts." It is a journey through time that requires only a good pair of walking shoes and a sense of curiosity.

Below, you will find the essential stops for any historical tour of the city. These are the places that define the visual and cultural identity of Biarritz today.

Legendary Virgin Mary Statue perched on a rock This is a beautiful place to come to, regardless of if you are a Christian or not. The scenery is fantastic, and the beauty of the surrounding makes this really worth it. It is a bit of a trail but super nice, specially in summer if the weather is good. Highly recommended.

Wonderful attraction. Lots of visitors in summer.

A delightful place to reach with a short nice walk and to enjoy at sunset. Surely there are always tons of tourists, but still, the place is attractive and full of photo opportunities.
MAKAROVE★★★★★
A very nice vantage point to see the miramar beach and plage de la Côte des Basque. Very nice views during sunset. Adventurous swimmer and divers often jump up from here to the sea.

A beautiful town in the French Basque Country, beautiful to visit in all its facets, from the historic center to the beaches. The shopkeepers are very friendly; I would have stayed an extra day if we hadn't had so many other stops on our trip.

Odysseas Papadopoulos★★★★☆
Collection of pictures, posters, clothing and other artifacts detailing the 1000 year history of Biarritz. It is in the converted Anglican Church ans features only part of the material assembled from donations of the major families of Biarritz since 1980 when it was founded. Some English information provided. Could benefit from more displays and additional space. Parking is a challenge.
Katherine Walshe★★★★★
Such a lovely museum run by brilliant staff. It has a beautiful Porch dedicated to those who fell in the south-west of France during the Peninsular War, including “Wellington’s Master Builder of Military Bridges” Lt. Col. Henry Sturgeon who died at Vic-en-Bigorre on 19th March 1814, husband of Irish-born Sarah Curran from Newmarket in County Cork.

This is undoubtedly one of the main attractions in Biarritz. The entrance fee of 5 euros should be acceptable as a touristic place. There is no lift so you have to climb up to the top by stairs. It took roughly 10 min for me. The view from the top was fantastic. If the weather is fine, it’s worth giving it a try.
may gardiner★★★★☆
Nice walk along a partially coastal track... Views to the sea are beautiful and there is access to the lighthouse on scheduled days.. unfortunately, the works for sea defence seem to be ongoing forever
Sieme Sijmons★★★★☆
Pretty cool place, but not the cheapest. It costs €5 just to go upstairs, but the view makes up for it — you get a full panoramic view of Biarritz. The stairs are quite steep, so it's not ideal for anyone who struggles with regular steps. I'm almost 2 meters tall, and everything felt really low, so be careful when walking around — mind your head!
Dirk★★★★★
Well maintained functioning lighthouse. Interesting history. Easy walk up the hill to the lighthouse. But then you need stamina. 🙂 only limited number of people allowed up which is nice when you are already up. Haha. 5 Eur per person. Amazing view. Nice breeze in summer but probably chilly in winter. Easy way up via road/sidewalk. Look at the structure in the rocks and read about it. Quite some engineering history.
Paul Vivas★★★★★
Iconic Phare of Biarritz This is a landmark building overlooking the sea. It is really beautiful both by nigh and by day. My pictures are from the beach of Anglet. Non photoshopped, so these are some of the real colours. Just amazing.

A magnificent restoration, carried out with meticulous attention to detail, faithfully recreating the original castle. It's as if the place has just been built. Those fortunate enough to rent it will enjoy a truly unique experience. Congratulations to the owners, who undertook this restoration with such exquisite taste, passion, and precision.
Mariano J. Bes★☆☆☆☆
It's not open to the public, which is a shame considering how many historical monuments in France are closed or have very limited access. This one is completely closed.
elodie ducos★☆☆☆☆
This place is not open to the public, so there's no point in going there by any means whatsoever. It's all a matter of taste, but the decisions made regarding the exterior restoration smack of the poor taste of people eager to display a certain social standing—it remains to be seen which ones... absolutely abstain!
Cosme Losas★★★★★
Very nice, and everything is very well cared for.

It was fairly free. 2hrs to 3 hrs for the visit. Great experience for someone who has not experienced scuba diving or surfing. Fascinating history of surfing and informative documentary with great interactive technology.
Katella DeBolt★★☆☆☆
Was greatly disappointed by the fact that in all the exhibits and all the videos and everything I experienced, there was not a single female or a person of color on film/talking. Apparently everything in the ocean is done by white men? I just think it’s pretty sad in the year 2026 to have a whole place devoted to learning about the ocean and only have one type of scientist represented. As a female and a scientist I was offended. The lines for everything were long. The VR headsets were all foggy and difficult to see anything in. In the bathysphere experience plastic whips your legs and it hurts. Why on earth do they have the bathysphere break down ? What is th point of that? The headset actually fell off my head during the Seaborg experience. Too much shaking and turning over. Just show a nice 360 of the city without the jarring and flipping and crazy maneuvers! Definitely do not recommend.
Eilif Langvad Kiland★★★★★
Fun place for both adults and kids 🤗 Very entertaining and educational at once, with a very welcoming and informative staff who guides you in a great way. Highly recommended for a visit if you are in the area and want to take a couple of hours off from the beach and get a great feel and respect for the ocean 🤩
Melinda Riniker★★★★☆
Good Programm for when it rains. Certain things you can only do once, like VR surfing, … but its really interesting and you will definitely learn more about ocean life and surfing.
Adam W★★★☆☆
Go on a weekday if you can. The museum is pretty average, it’s mostly VR and surfboards hanging on walls. The Short VR movies are fun but the quality is outdated. They have this VR rollercoaster hidden in the back but it’s kind of lame, you just fly around the coast like you’re a drone. I feel like the place could be so much better. Save it for a rainy day if you have nothing else to do.

Lighthouse with beautifully maintained surroundings. Garden and public restrooms nearby. Benches and grass for relaxing and watching the sunset. The lighthouse can be visited for 5 euros. The 248 steps up are truly worth it. The views from the top are incredible. As you climb, you're very close to the lighthouse lantern.

We have never actually crossed the bridge as we got stuck for 2 hours playing in the most wonderful rock pools with lots of amazing sea life including crabs, sea slugs, fish, snails etc. Just pay attention to the tide times as the rock pools would be covered at high tide.

This is the footbridge that connects the seafront to the Rocher du Basta, right next to the Grande Plage. It's a lovely little spot for the view of the Grande Plage, the lighthouse, and the Biarritz coastline. The walk is short, and the view is well worth it, especially at sunset.

A detailed and interesting aquarium that's well worth the visit. A wide collection over multiple floors, looking right over the waterfront - you can easily walk here from the city centre, and the approach by sea is very picturesque. You enter on the low side, and emerge floors above on the high side, and it's right by the Virgin on the Rock so you can walk out there afterwards. Has a café and decent gift shop. Note, if french is not your first language, you must open a QR code at each exhibit to get English or other languages.

Definitely worth seeing specially if you have kids . Lots of displays , several animals and different species. Sea turtles , sharks , stingrays, morenas , eels , congrio, several fishes all different colors , medusas , seals , corals , lobsters, crabs , octopus , turbot and more . . Aquarium has 4 main levels ,including a terrace where if you’re lucky you can see how they feed the sea turtles .it also has a shop with lots of souvenirs. Also has an onsite cafe “Olatua Biarritz “ operates seasonal as a cafe and snack bar terrace . If you’re in Biarritz must see ,ticket prices are not too expensive definitely worth it

This aquarium is a gem! It's not colossal, but very beautiful display of jellyfish, turtles and seals. The toilets are clean. This aquarium is situated in front of a beautiful rock beach. However the parking spots are a bit difficult to find.

Nice aquarium in the center of Biarritz between two big beach... One of the nicest where I was... Ticket is 17e per person... Open until 7pm...Not so crowded, you can buy ticket and come in... There is so much different species of water animal... It's quite place and you can relax and enjoy in view... People who work there is kind and helpful if you have question... All recommendations for visit and take some nice pictures and videos if you are in Biarritz
Toland Cordell★★★★★
This Aquarium is amazing!! I went on Saturday, January 31, 2026. It was recommended to buy tickets in advance; however, we did not. We got there about 30 minute after it opened. No wait, we had plenty of time to look, wait, and read about each exhibit there. The longer we were there, the more people were coming in. I took so many pictures and videos. I will return!

Practical Tips for Exploring Historic Biarritz

To make the most of your historical tour, it helps to understand the geography and local customs of the area. Biarritz is highly walkable, but the terrain can be steep, and the weather changes quickly due to the Atlantic influence. Planning your route with these factors in mind will ensure a comfortable and enriching experience as you move between the major landmarks.

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. Many of the most significant sites, such as the Rocher de la Vierge and the Atalaye plateau, require walking on uneven stone paths and coastal footbridges that can become slick with sea spray. High heels or thin-soled shoes are not suitable for navigating the historic port or the cliffside paths safely.

Start your day at the Port des Pêcheurs. This is the oldest part of Biarritz and the historic heart of the town. Arriving early in the morning allows you to see the traditional fishing boats and the colourful cabanes before the crowds arrive. It also positions you perfectly to climb up toward the Rocher de la Vierge or the Plateau de l’Atalaye as the light improves.

Respect the religious sites. Biarritz has several active places of worship, including the Église Sainte-Eugénie and the Imperial Chapel. These are not merely tourist attractions but functioning spiritual spaces. Ensure your shoulders and knees are covered when entering, keep your voice low, and refrain from using flash photography or taking phone calls inside.

Utilize the local tourism office for context. Located in the heart of town, the tourist office often provides detailed walking maps that focus specifically on the Second Empire architecture and the Art Deco heritage. Grabbing one of these maps can help you identify specific architectural features on private villas that you might otherwise walk past without noticing.

Time your visit to the Hôtel du Palais carefully. While the exterior of this imperial palace is a must-see, the interior is generally reserved for guests of the hotel or the restaurant. If you wish to see the grandeur of the lobby and the historical salons, consider booking a reservation for tea or a cocktail at the bar. This allows you to experience the interior authentically without violating the privacy of the guests.

Walking through Biarritz with an awareness of its history changes the way you perceive the town. The modern surf culture that dominates the beaches today is simply the latest chapter in a long story of human interaction with the Atlantic Ocean. The fishermen who built the port, the empress who built the palace, and the surfers who ride the waves are all part of the same continuum.

By taking the time to visit these historic sites, you are doing more than just sightseeing. You are acknowledging the resilience and evolution of a unique Basque community that has welcomed the world while maintaining its distinct identity. Biarritz is not a museum under glass; it is a vibrant city where the past and present exist side by side, offering a richer experience for those who stop to look.
