15 Things to Do in Rouen

Rouen is a city that wears its history with a quiet confidence. Known as the historic capital of Normandy, it is a place where medieval half-timbered houses lean over cobblestone lanes and the spirit of Joan of Arc lingers in the air. Unlike the sprawling energy of Paris, Rouen offers an intimate, walkable experience that rewards those who take the time to look up at its gothic spires and ornate clock faces.

While many travelers pass through on their way to the coast, the city deserves a slower pace. Its rich artistic heritage, lively food markets, and scenic Seine riverbanks make it a destination in its own right. Whether you are a history buff, an art lover, or a foodie seeking the authentic taste of Normandy, Rouen provides a dense concentration of culture without the crowds.

The city is famously known as the "City of a Hundred Spires," a nickname inspired by its skyline of churches and civic buildings. The most dominant of these is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame, a masterpiece that once held the title of the tallest building in the world. Yet, the magic of Rouen extends far beyond its famous facade, into hidden courtyards, antique districts, and bustling quays.

Planning a visit involves balancing the iconic must-sees with the local favorites that don’t always make the front page of the guidebook. You can spend your morning walking in the footsteps of Monet and your afternoon tasting the region’s finest cheeses and apple brandy. The city’s compact center means you can cover a surprising amount of ground in a single day, though a weekend is ideal to soak it all in.

To help you navigate this Norman gem, we have curated a list of essential experiences. From monumental architecture to quiet garden escapes, these are the attractions that define the character of Rouen. This guide is designed to give you a practical, culturally rich itinerary that goes beyond the surface.

Here are the top things to do in Rouen to make the most of your visit:

Hard to imagine this innocent looking square has such somber chapter in the hundred years' war. The Joan of Arc statue affixed to the exterior of the modern church of St. Joan of Arc - had a serene resignation and peace. Kudo to the French sculptor for such mastery.

Fascinating to see the area and buildings Van Gogh painted and see where he lived and died.

Place du Vieux-Marché in Rouen, France! This square has everything I love in a European city, the history, atmosphere, beautiful architecture, and the kind of energy that makes you want to stay!! It’s hard to believe this peaceful, lively place is where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. You can sit in front of the Church of Saint Joan of Arc, just steps from her execution site, and watch life unfold around you. The contrast between the past and present here is wild and very moving. The square is surrounded by medieval buildings, cafés, fun little bars, and boutiques. It’s perfect for people watching- its fun to see the locals and tourists wandering through along with some odd characters who could be straight out of a novel! I sat with a coffee in the sun and admired it all. It was fun to take it all in and feel the city’s soul! It’s not just a historical site. it's alive, now full of charm and beauty, evolving from a dark past. Super cool way to spend a day in Rouen France!

Lots of history. Joan of Arc in the church. A beautiful mens choir in the church practicing when we were there. Really cute shops all over town with some unique buys.
Tawseef Khan★★★★☆
This is where Joan of Arc was executed and you feel the melancholy in the air. It’s a very simple affair with a monument and church dedicated to her and the square preserved from that time. The surrounding buildings have been preserved and walking here you can almost imagine how it might have been in that day hundreds of years before. Definitely visit when you’re in Rouen.

We had such a lovely visit to Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen. It is absolutely breathtaking, both inside and out, with so much beautiful architecture and history to take in. There is something incredibly peaceful and special about being inside too. Definitely a must-see if you are visiting Rouen or even just passing through. We’re so glad we stopped and took the time to explore this beautiful place. Absolutely worth a visit!

Visiting Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen was one of those rare experiences that stays with you long after you leave. The moment I stepped inside, I was surrounded by a deep sense of peace and history. The cathedral is breathtaking, with magnificent Gothic architecture, stunning stone carvings, and an atmosphere that invites quiet reflection and admiration. Every corner tells a story. The craftsmanship is extraordinary, and it's remarkable to think that generations of artisans dedicated their lives to creating something so beautiful. I was particularly fascinated by some of the ancient statues. Many have weathered the passage of centuries, and some are missing faces, hands, or other features. Rather than diminishing their beauty, these scars seem to tell their own story, bearing witness to wars, revolutions, changing times, and the relentless passage of centuries. One of the hidden secrets of this cathedral is that if you slow down and really look, you'll notice that not everything is perfect, and that's exactly what makes it special. The worn statues, aged stones, and subtle imperfections create a living connection to the people who stood here hundreds of years ago. It feels less like a museum and more like a conversation with history itself. Whether you visit for worship, architecture, photography, or simply to find a moment of calm, this cathedral is a masterpiece that touches both the eyes and the soul. A truly unforgettable place that reminds us that beauty isn't found in perfection, but in the stories that survive the test of time. 🙏⛪✨

What an exquisite building with so much history. The cathederal itself is impressive from both the outside and the inside. The Jeanne D'Arc museum round the back is worth a visit too. In the evenings they do a light show at the front of the cathedral which is impressive.

This Cathedral is almost 900 years old. Has been rebuilt several times. Beautiful, breathtaking architecture both inside and outside! This was what inspired Monet.Entry is free. We were there on June 15th, 2026, Monday evening.

Stunning testimony of the story of it's time. Host of the stories that accompanied the culture of Rouen. A city that continuously lived on the boundary between France and England. Jean d'Arc is the heroine of Rouen, the cathedral hosts a museum telling her story. Unfortunately, the guided experience through the museum was in French.

The Gros Horloge is a beautiful landmark in the centre of Rouen, very close to the cathedral. The clock itself is very impressive. The old buildings and streets around it make the area really pleasant to walk around. It is also surrounded by shops, cafés and restaurants.

One of a kind installation worth visiting. Price for adult is up to 7.85€ (slight inflation from Google price listed), reduced price available and free for kids under 6 years old. Audioguides included. There’s an audio guide version for kids, strongly recommended. Plan 40 minutes to visit and hear the *very loud* bells. Impressive mechanics to witness and history to learn about. Kids 5 years and older were obsessed with this. Activity books are available onsite at 2€, 4.50€ etc. Definitely one of the most valuable visit to do while in Rouen. Entrance tucked away next to Starbucks

In the north of France, an hour and a half drive from Paris, is the city of Rouen, the old part of the city is intertwined with small streets of unusual architecture, buildings from the 17th century, as well as churches, which are several made in the Gothic style, also in this city, Joan of Arc, a historical figure, was burned at the stake, and the city itself is full of artists who use every free corner for sketching and working with water colors, another landmark is the astronomical clock, I think the oldest in France

Very beautiful area and clock, the streets surrounding this monument are very nice with a good ambiance. A must visit when in Rouen.

Jardin des Plantes de Rouen is truly a hidden gem and one of the most beautiful gardens we visited during our trip.** From the moment we entered, it was clear how much care and dedication goes into maintaining this place. Every section is beautifully presented, with vibrant flowers, rare plants, and fascinating vegetables that you don't often see elsewhere. One of the highlights for us was discovering unusual fruits, vegetables, and exotic plants growing throughout the garden. It felt like walking through a living museum of nature, with something interesting around every corner. The paths are peaceful, the displays are well maintained, and there are plenty of lovely spots to sit and simply enjoy the surroundings. The staff deserve special recognition. Everyone we met was friendly, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the garden. Their care and attention help make this place feel truly special. Another great bonus is that **entry is completely free**, making it incredible value for families, couples, and anyone who appreciates nature. We also found plenty of free on-street parking nearby, which made the visit even more convenient. If you're visiting Rouen, don't miss this place. It's a peaceful escape from the city, full of beauty, colour, and surprises. A wonderful garden that exceeded our expectations and is highly recommended for visitors of all ages.

Absolutely loved this museum. It was very interactive which is amazing for children. There were alot of things to smell, touch or try on. It is not expensive and is a quick place to visit with rich history about Jeanne d'arc and the dungeon. It's a great museum but after seeing once it is enough.
David OMalley★☆☆☆☆
One of those tourist traps people need to be warned about. It's not even mildly interesting but what's really bad is they close off the third level and therefore deprive people of getting panoramic views over Rouen. They even charge 7 euros for pretty much nothing. See it from the outside and don't go up.
Athina Antonopoulou★★★☆☆
Visited the Donjon tower on the 31st of December. Even though the tower looks amazing in the exterior, visiting the inside isn't really worth it. It is only open on weekends and there's nothing to see, really... we were informed that from March till November, it is used as an escape room, which sounds quite interesting so it would worth a visit then. The guy at the entrance was very kind, smiley, and polite.
Dejan Braki★★★☆☆
This tower is slightly north from Rouen center, some 15 min walk. It has a great historical importance, as Joan the Arc was imprisoned here, waiting for her trial. Also, it had its role in WWII resistance movement, but that's it. Today, it's nothing but a tower. There's no museum there, nor you can enter it, so it's a 5 min photo stop only. Decide yourself is it worth making a detour as there's nothing else to do in the area
G Mac★★★★★
An amazing piece of history. This is the last vestige of the battlements and is where Joan of Arc was held. It was not open on the Monday we visited but seems to house an escape room adventure.

An immersive historical journeys of rooms with a historic Rouen setting that deliver the history and ultimate demise of Joan of Arc. Atmospheric rooms with videos and items that educate all ages on this whirlwind story of the young Joan and her impact on the 100 years war. A good option for a hot afternoon to avoid the high heat. We did not book and paid on entry and took the next tour. Narration is in French, however translation devices with headphones are included in entry. If you don't know the story and want to immerse not too far from where she was burnt at the stake this in an interesting couple of hours. Prices are reasonable and staff speak English and are helpful.

Often with children you can be sceptical of tours like this, but this is well worth the time and money. The ticket price for a family of 4 with audio is under €40. The tour takes about 90 minutes but it moves and there is seating in each section. The immersive aspect is great, it really comes to life and tells you the story from the beginning of Joan and her life. The audio is perfectly timed as well- often when listening in another language, it fails to keep pace, but this was spot on. Would highly recommend. Great experience. Rooms are amazing to look through post the immersive aspect of the tour. Great for adults and kids. Bathrooms available.
Sidónio Sousa★★★★★
A must visit! The museum is really well thought, with many interesting corners and amazing views from the corridor. Well worth the price paid.
Antonios Liamis★★★★★
Extremely well implemented. The story telling is very immersive and hooked me completely. That is something the frnesh are really good in. There is an elevator in case you cannot walk stairs that well. Every 15 minutes or so, you can start the tour in your own paste. Perfect value for money!

This museum was extremely calm and quiet... I visited with a friend, and even when we spoke in whispers, our voices felt noticeable, which really highlighted the peaceful atmosphere... There are many spaces to sit and relax, with small seats, benches, and chairs throughout the museum... While I was there, a woman was playing the piano beautifully. The music was very soothing, and I enjoyed it so much that I stayed for about 30 minutes just listening... The paintings are truly wonderful...I took some photos, but I’m not sharing the best ones so that you can visit and experience it for yourself... Most importantly, this is a free museum you can simply walk in, sit for a while, and enjoy your time... The restrooms are also very clean and well maintained...

Great museum! The impressionist wing is wonderful with nice touches of sounds which make experience even better, it’s like an island of piece. Museum is organised exceptionally, it’s free and still have security boxes to leave belongings. They also have comfortable zones to enjoy great pieces of art
Amy Tupper★★★★★
While the museum itself is huge, the collection is sized perfectly and tells a wonderful story about French painters. The Impressionist paintings are well-lit and organized well. It's a hidden gem of France.
J Colin★★★★★
Great museum to visit. The main appeal is its impressionist collection, but the other sections are also very well framed, particularly the Dutch art section. It is a manageable size with kids and it is Free! (the price to quality ratio could not be better). A "must visit" during your stay in the city.
Chastain Meyers★★★★★
I was extremely impressed with this museum, it was free and I could’ve easily experienced a similar-quality museum in the states for $15-25. They had a Monet painting of the local Rouen cathedral, which was very surreal after seeing the cathedral in person that day. The wide range of paintings, sculptures, vintage furniture and more surrounded by gorgeous architecture was amazing

Mi G (MG)★★★★★
The Church of Saint Joan of Arc in Rouen is one of the most unexpected religious buildings in France. After days of medieval streets and Gothic cathedrals, this church feels almost shocking at first sight — modern, expressive, and deeply symbolic. It was designed by the architect Louis Arretche and completed in 1979 on the very square where Joan of Arc was executed in 1431. The building replaces the earlier church destroyed during the bombings of World War II. Rather than recreating a historic structure, the architect chose a contemporary language, creating a powerful memorial rather than a reconstruction. The style is modernist with strong organic influences. The sweeping roofline, often compared to an upturned Viking ship, a flame, or even folded hands in prayer, is covered with dark slate and dramatically dominates the square. This shape is not decorative — it directly references both Normandy’s maritime heritage and the fire of the stake, making the architecture itself part of the narrative. Inside, the atmosphere is surprisingly warm. The most remarkable feature is the collection of 16th-century stained glass windows transferred here from the destroyed Church of Saint-Vincent. Their rich colors glow against the raw concrete and wood structure, creating a dialogue between medieval faith and 20th-century architecture. The contrast works beautifully: modern forms frame ancient spirituality. Standing here, you are not just visiting a church but a historical place of memory. The building marks the exact site of Joan of Arc’s martyrdom, turning the square into both a spiritual space and a monument of reconciliation — a reminder that history, tragedy, and faith can coexist within contemporary architecture.
Sidónio Sousa★★★★★
Very atypical church with some of the most beautiful vitrals you could ever find. The church from outside is not the usual gothic style so if you want to see something different, take a detour and pay a visit.
Tom Shaw★★★★☆
This church honestly looks more like a parliament building than a traditional place of worship! Entry was free when I visited (it reopened at 2pm), which was a nice bonus. The building’s unique shape really stands out—it's unlike any other church or cathedral I've seen in Normandy. The stained glass windows are quite pretty, too. The location is a bit odd, though—right in the middle of the square, which doesn’t seem like the most natural spot for it. I actually thought the symbolic stake and the surrounding gardens outside felt more fitting for the setting. Overall, definitely worth a visit just to see something different!
How it is Liz★★★★★
The Church of Saint Joan of Arc in Rouen was one of the most moving stops on this trip to France. The Church is in the square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Never in a million years did I think I'd find myself here! There's a simple cross marking the spot, and standing there gave me chills. The church itself is… truly unique. It looks nothing like your typical cathedral. The outside is covered in these overlapping tiles that look like scales- very dramatic and almost sea creature like. It had been explained how the roof was made to look like flames (symbolizing her execution) and an overturned Viking ship outside, almost looking like a hat. Super symbolic, and once you know this information, the design makes a lot more sense! Inside, peaceful and very colorful. All the stained glass windows are unbelievably stunning! This place is absolutely worth seeing if you are anywhere near Rouen! The history and the design combined is unlike anything I've ever seen!

Beautiful church located in the old part of Rouen historic center, built in Gothic style in the 15th century. Hours for visits (10-12 & 2-6 PM) contain a gap from 12 to 2 PM and it closes 10 minutes before 12. The door closed just in front of us at 11:50 and we had to return later to see the wonders of this old cathedrale. It worth it!

Beautiful church quite similar to the cathedral but smaller. The architecture is unique, detailed and impressive. The church itself is set in an area surrounded by beautiful Tudor-type buildings with cafes, restaurants and independent shops. It is in a fairly quiet part of the city centre. Not sure how often one gain entry. It is such a beauty to meander through the streets nearby.

What a beautiful church. It is the height of what is known as flamboyant gothic architecture. The stonework lace on the facade seems impossibly delicate. The richness of the carving is astonishing. The interior is just as impressive. A pure delight of gothic architecture and engineering brilliance.

Rouen has three outstanding Churches: the imposing Rouen Cathedral, the Saint-Ouen Abbey and this one - St. Maclou Church. You cannot tell which one's more beautiful, so I suggest visiting all three. This makes no special effort at all, as all of them are in a 1 km radius, literally 7, 8 min walk one from another.

This museum is unlike anything I've ever visited before. It's located in an old church, and it showcases all sorts of ironwork from throughout the ages. Entrance is free! I found the sections on keys and locks the most interesting. Given the standardization of modern lock mechanisms, it's easy to forget just how complex locks can be. The section upstairs on scales and weights was also very interesting. The plaques and informational cards are exclusively in French, so while you can still appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that went into creating each of the pieces, you either need someone who knows French or the ability to translate in order to get the full picture.
Andon Ishikliev★★★★★
Unique museum, one of a kind. Lots of interesting iron works from the past . Me and my son, even my wife , enjoyed it

An absolutely fascinating and unique museum, unlike anything else you’ll find in Rouen 🗝️. It’s entirely dedicated to wrought iron art — from medieval locks, keys, and gates to delicate household items and signs that tell centuries of craftsmanship and history. 🏛️ What Makes It Special The museum is housed in a beautifully restored former Gothic church, which adds even more charm and atmosphere. The play of light through the stained glass windows gives a magical feeling as you walk among iron masterpieces that once decorated real homes and streets. 🔩 Why It’s Worth Visiting You don’t have to be an artist or blacksmith to appreciate the creativity and skill behind every piece. Each item has a story — from ancient locks that look like puzzles to elegant iron signs that once guided travelers and merchants. 📝 Practical Info ✅ Free entrance (check schedule in advance, hours may vary) ✅ Great for families, couples, or solo travelers interested in art and craftsmanship ✅ Combine your visit with the nearby Rouen Museum of Fine Arts — they complement each other perfectly A small but powerful museum that proves art isn’t just on canvas — it’s in the metal, history, and human imagination 🔥 ⸻ For more tips follow me on Google. Absolutely beautiful church and a must-see in Rouen! The architecture is stunning, with high vaulted ceilings and incredible stained-glass windows that fill the space with light and color. It feels शांत and much less crowded than the cathedral, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. A perfect place to take your time, admire the details, and soak in the atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Saint-Ouen in Rouen is the sort of church that makes one wonder whether Gothic architects secretly competed to see who could make stone feel least bound by gravity. Hidden slightly in the shadow of Rouen Cathedral — which greedily absorbs most tourist attention — Saint-Ouen reveals itself more quietly, though with no less ambition. Vast, luminous, impossibly elegant, it rises above Normandy like a lesson in vertical persuasion. Officially, it is one of the great masterpieces of Gothic architecture in France: soaring vaults, delicate tracery, immense stained-glass windows, and an organ so magnificent that even non-believers briefly consider spirituality as a design principle. Construction began in the 14th century on the site of an older Benedictine abbey and continued for centuries, because medieval Europe treated cathedral-building much the way modern societies treat infrastructure projects: endlessly, expensively, and with occasional interruptions caused by war, plague, or political collapse. Yet the result possesses remarkable stylistic harmony, as though generations of builders somehow agreed to suppress their egos for the greater good — a deeply suspicious achievement by any historical standard. And then comes the familiar French complication: restoration. The Revolution damaged the church, time weathered it, and the 19th century arrived carrying restoration theories with evangelical confidence. And then, inevitably, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc appeared — rather like inviting a brilliant but dangerously opinionated novelist to “edit” a medieval manuscript. His philosophy of conservation was less about preserving monuments than completing them according to what he believed they ought to have been. Missing elements were invented, inconvenient originals removed, and historical accuracy gently encouraged to cooperate with artistic vision. Conservation, in his hands, became a curious blend of archaeology, imagination, and architectural fan fiction. Normally, this sort of intervention would feel unforgivable. Yet Saint-Ouen escaped the more theatrical excesses inflicted elsewhere and still feels profoundly, convincingly Gothic rather than artificially medieval. Perhaps because the building itself possesses such extraordinary coherence that even restoration cannot entirely disrupt its atmosphere. What makes Saint-Ouen unforgettable is precisely that atmosphere. Unlike Notre-Dame, burdened by fame and crowds, Saint-Ouen retains a strange serenity. The light inside does not merely illuminate the architecture — it dissolves it. Columns stretch upward like pale tree trunks in some ecclesiastical forest, while silence lingers beneath the vaults with almost physical weight. One leaves with the peculiar impression that Gothic architecture was never really about stone at all, but about convincing humans, however briefly, that transcendence might actually be possible.

Move heaven and earth to go here. You will experience both and will be disheartened when they shoo you out for the 12 to 2 lunch. But if your interest in cathedrals comes from reading "Pillars of the Earth" then this is what you've been yearning for. It's free so you can come back as much as you like - and believe me you will.

It’s a nice place to see the city from the high point, but it’s not so impressive, as expected. Rouen on the streets is match more tasty than from the top. Interesting idea to have a balances with a bell. 🔔 🔔 Needs a bit patience to get up to the point. For me nothing special, but nice to come there if you have a time.

A nice little stair-assisted, uphill trek, lasting 15-25 minutes, depending on stamina levels. Great view of parts of the Seine and surrounding city.

Beautiful view of Rouen. If walking up be prepared for quite a lot of stairs, bring water if it’s hot. ☺️

Must-do visit the top at sunset for the view over Rouen, the cathedral, the Seine and make sure you stay a few minutes longer after the sun sets so you can see Rouen start to light up at night.

I liked this view point, except once I was alone three guys appeared out of the bushes. Luckily I was on my motorcycle and wasn't going to stop. Be a little careful in this place.

Ok, if you’re in Rouen at night, you absolutely have to see the light show on the side of the cathedral.

Rouen is a magnificent medieval European city with such a wonderful collection of beautiful churches a cathedral and medieval buildings. A great place to visit and a place of historical and cultural significance?

Tombs of Rollo and Richard the Lionhart are completely inaccessible and partially blocked from view by ongoing restoration works/scaffolding. Otherwise, breathtaking place with so much incredible history.

Makes me wonder how were those buildings made so detailed and so massive and complex. It's just amazing entry was free.

It will take a few minutes to take in the detail of this magnificent building, it really is worth the time. It was a palace up to 1540.

Very cool Gothic architecture building off a central square. Neat to look at, not sure if you can enter or tour the building or if there is anything in there too see past the exterior.

Tips for Visiting Rouen

To ensure your trip to Rouen is as smooth as it is memorable, it helps to understand the local rhythm. Rouen is a city of seasons, where the weather can change quickly and the dining hours are strictly observed. Knowing a few practical details before you arrive will allow you to experience the city like a local rather than a tourist.

  1. Wear comfortable, waterproof shoes. The historic center is largely pedestrianized, but the streets are paved with uneven cobblestones. Rain is common in Normandy, so shoes with good grip and water resistance will keep you exploring comfortably.
  2. Respect French meal times. Many restaurants close their kitchens between 2:30 PM and 7:00 PM. If you want a leisurely lunch or an early dinner, plan to eat right at noon or wait until the evening service begins.
  3. Use the TEOR bus system for longer distances. While the city center is walkable, the TEOR (Transport Est-Ouest Rouennais) is efficient for reaching areas like the Musée Flaubert or the Panorama from the train station.
  4. Visit the major churches early or late. The Cathédrale and Saint-Maclou are most atmospheric when the tour groups are absent. Early morning offers quiet light for photography, while late afternoon brings the sun to the western facades.
  5. Look for the "Rouen Normandie Tourisme" pass. If you plan to visit multiple museums, this pass can save you money on entry fees and often includes public transport, making it a smart value for a busy itinerary.

Rouen rewards the curious traveler who is willing to wander without a strict agenda. The true beauty of the city often lies in the details: a carved wooden door, a hidden garden, or the aroma of fresh bread wafting from a boulangerie. It is a city that feels lived-in, not frozen in time, and that authenticity is its greatest charm.

As the sun sets over the Seine and the cathedral’s facade is illuminated against the night sky, you will understand why this city has inspired writers, painters, and dreamers for centuries. Rouen is not just a stop on the way to the coast—it is a destination that holds its own, offering a deep and lasting impression of Normandy’s soul.
