12 Best Shopping Spots in Rouen

Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, is a city that wears its heritage with pride. With its half-timbered houses, gothic spires, and cobblestone lanes, it feels less like a modern city and more like a living museum. Yet, beyond the visual splendor of the Gros-Horloge and the towering Notre-Dame Cathedral, lies a thriving commercial scene waiting to be explored.

For the discerning shopper, Rouen offers a distinct alternative to the homogenized retail experience found in larger capitals. Here, independent boutiques, artisan workshops, and traditional food purveyors sit comfortably alongside contemporary brands. The city’s compact nature makes it a walkable paradise, allowing you to drift from antique districts to modern shopping streets within minutes.

Understanding the local geography is key to maximizing your time. The city is broadly divided between the historic Right Bank, with its winding pedestrian streets, and the Left Bank, which offers a more bohemian and artistic vibe. Each district carries its own distinct personality, from the luxury labels near the Place du Vieux-Marché to the bookshops and vintage stores tucked away near the university.

This guide is curated to help you navigate the very best of what Rouen has to offer. Whether you are hunting for a unique piece of Norman pottery, seeking the perfect wedge of local cheese, or simply looking to update your wardrobe with French flair, this city has a niche for you. We have walked the streets, browsed the shelves, and spoken to the locals to bring you a definitive list.

Shopping in Rouen is not just a transaction; it is an experience steeped in atmosphere. The scent of fresh bread from a boulangerie often mingles with the visual delight of a perfectly arranged shop window. It is a place where you can buy a designer handbag in the morning and watch a master craftsman carve wood in the afternoon.

Without further delay, let us uncover the must-visit destinations that define the retail landscape of this Norman gem.

Significantly preferred my experience here than at the Galeries Lafayette in Paris, way more chill and pleasant to shop in. Not as big of a selection as in Paris but I didn’t feel limited in what I was viewing! Bought a couple of souvenirs here, the staff didn’t speak much english but were still helpful

Really dated shopping center. Escalator isn't working and some lamps are flickering. Could use a renovation.

I like to store very much It's very classy specially for the ladies they've got every type of our that you could possibly imagine perfumes makeup up and then towels bath for sundries I like it classy it's been around for a while and it's stood the pandemic and it's still there not many stores can say that they have very convenient to T1 To T2 T3 the one I visited is across from the Place Cathedral always worth a visit

The shop its not up to the standard the floor is used and old and ceiling looks like warehouse lighting not good and concession shop are not well put to light. The store look like second hand shop very dirty and disorganised. No price in the articles which it's supposed to be the key. Need a goodrelooking and flesh colour and good light.

Great sales today and fantastic customer service. Ludivine was incredibly kind, calm and patient while helping my daughter with the process of creating an account, making a purchase and organising a tax refund. We will definitely shop here again - à bientôt Printemps!
nk★★☆☆☆
This Printemps is nothing like the Printemps Haussmann in Paris. The overall experience was disappointing. None of the staff we encountered could speak proper English, which made even simple communication difficult. There were also no self-service Tax Free kiosks. We had to wait about 20 minutes at the customer service desk to process our Tax Free paperwork because there was only one employee available. This was definitely not the employee’s fault. She was handling another customer at the same time and did her best to help us as quickly as she could.
Greg_Ryan★★★★★
Printemps Rouen is an excellent department store in Rouen and elsewhere. Well worth visiting. Great stock and lovely staff.
ela mas★★☆☆☆
I wanted to shop here but there was no bathroom. The locations in Paris and New York have bathrooms so it was weird to see such a large store without a bathroom.
Pippa Alldritt★★★★★
My first experience at Printemps Rouen during Black Friday week. A wonderful department store with a large collection and range of well known brands to suit all tastes. Well served by polite, efficient, helpful and professional staff in all departments. Spacious, well lit and well stocked.

Walt Bilofsky★★★★★
For such an attractive visitor destination, Rouen has relatively few souvenir stores, and most of them have more Eiffel Towers than anything from Rouen. Rouen Souvenirs is the happy exception. The tiny store has a wide selection, including a vast array of postcards for just half a euro, placemats, and my favorite - building models - of the main cathedral and the clock gate. They also have Eiffel Towers, but don't let that stop you from visiting and taking home something from Rouen. They're at the northwest corner of the Place du Vieux Marche.
Hanh Nhung Nguyen★★★★★
There are many pretty souvenirs here
Jordyn Giddens★★★★★
Not everyone in Rouen in kind to Americans, but the woman that runs this shop is a gem. She was so kind with letting me browse and answering questions. The prices are extremely fair, and the quality of her products is good. If you can buy from someone in Vieux-Marche, make it her.
Tee Mo★★★★★
Best souvenir shop in terms of selection and price that we found in Rouen. Not too many souvenir shops in town, which is kinda nice.
James King★★★★★
Very helpful and friendly. Well priced and they'll sell you international stamps for your postcards. They dealt with my very poor French very kindly.

A good center that has survived since its restructuring in 2010... It's a shame that there's sometimes a feeling of insecurity due to unsavory characters. The Grand Mare neighborhood is nice, a green area with a beautiful urban forest.

I didn't stay long. I was scared, it was almost deserted, and the only people who were watching me were... I can't say anything more.

It's not a shopping center. A very good, modern, and dynamic pharmacy. A post office, that's great. A few local shops, but overall the place is so depressing.

Stephane Renard★★★☆☆
Small shopping center in the city center. A bit empty, a good number of the shops are closed. There's a large Intermarché supermarket inside, which is quite nice. As for the mall, the staircase is really very pretty; it could be mistaken for a roller coaster.
Jojidex★☆☆☆☆
No network coverage inside. It's a bit tiring when you're listening to music while shopping to avoid the ambient noise, screaming children, and the store radio. The checkouts aren't optimized, judging by the long queues to pay for your groceries.
Gallida-Hellas★★☆☆☆
Clean and on a "human" scale. Intermarché has one small problem: the security guards are constantly changing and their attitude isn't always very welcoming. There's a definite lack of empathy towards vulnerable people: I'm thinking of the homeless, people in precarious situations with their dogs, who are treated poorly. This is unacceptable, especially knowing that they spend what little they have at Intermarché, and above all, that their pet is the apple of their eye. So, some respect for them would be appreciated, and please allow them to enter the entrance with their dogs. I saw a security guard verbally assault a vulnerable person who was entering with their dog. I had to look after my dog while the gentleman went to do his shopping because the security guard was so rude, while the guard said nothing to a woman who was shopping with her dog in the store (the dog was absolutely adorable... like the gentleman's dog, certainly less "presentable" (according to the guard's standards) but just as respectable). I was then behind her at the checkout, and everyone was fawning over the woman and her dog. Unbearable. I can't stand this double standard! They need to learn about equal treatment.
Bruno Wils★★★☆☆
This space is very well located but has a dated and rather uninspiring feel. What would it take to revitalize it? Make some suggestions.
Christophe Lhotellier★☆☆☆☆
Not great, plus in some aisles it's pure as a urine smear, and you get the impression the cashier is working on an assembly line

Tips for a Successful Shopping Trip in Rouen

To truly shop like a local in Rouen, it helps to understand the rhythm of the city. While the streets are always charming, timing and local customs can significantly impact your experience. Whether you are looking to secure the best bargains or simply want to ensure you are not caught out by the traditional French lunch break, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are some essential strategies to help you navigate the city’s commercial offerings with ease and confidence.

1. Respect the Lunchtime Closure
Unlike major international hubs, Rouen maintains a strong tradition of closing shop during lunch. Many independent boutiques and artisan stores will close their doors from roughly 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Plan your day around this pause; use the time to enjoy a long lunch at a local brasserie, and resume your shopping when the shutters roll back up.

2. Master the Art of the Greeting
Customer service in France often begins with a polite exchange. Always say "Bonjour" (or "Bonsoir" in the evening) upon entering a shop and "Merci, au revoir" when leaving. This small gesture is not just polite; it establishes a respectful rapport with the shopkeeper, often leading to warmer, more helpful service.

3. Utilize the TEOR Public Transport
While the historic center is highly walkable, some of the best bargains and larger retail parks are located on the outskirts. Rouen’s TEOR bus system is efficient and reliable. If you are venturing to areas like Saint-Sever on the Left Bank or larger shopping centers, using public transport will save your feet for the cobblestone lanes of the city center.

4. Look for the "Fabriqué en Normandie" Label
To ensure you are bringing home an authentic piece of the region, seek out products marked with local provenance. Whether it is linen, ceramics, or food items, buying directly from the maker or looking for regional certifications guarantees you are getting a high-quality souvenir that supports the local economy.

5. Time Your Visit with the Markets
Rouen’s open-air markets are a highlight of the local lifestyle. The Place du Vieux-Marché hosts a fantastic food market on most mornings, but the city also features flea markets and antique fairs on weekends. Check the local calendar for events like the "Grande Braderie" (a massive city-wide sidewalk sale) which usually occurs during the summer sales season.

Shopping in Rouen offers a refreshing return to a time when retail was personal and products had a story. It is a city that rewards the curious wanderer, the foodie, and the fashionista in equal measure. By exploring the spots listed above, you are not just filling shopping bags; you are engaging with the living history and vibrant culture of Normandy.

As you walk away with your purchases, whether it is a fragrant wedge of Neufchâtel cheese or a hand-stitched leather bag, you carry a piece of Rouen with you. The true joy of shopping here lies in the discovery—the unexpected conversation with a vendor, the discovery of a hidden courtyard, or the perfect find in a vintage bin. Enjoy the hunt.
