This museum was extremely calm and quiet... I visited with a friend, and even when we spoke in whispers, our voices felt noticeable, which really highlighted the peaceful atmosphere... There are many spaces to sit and relax, with small seats, benches, and chairs throughout the museum... While I was there, a woman was playing the piano beautifully. The music was very soothing, and I enjoyed it so much that I stayed for about 30 minutes just listening... The paintings are truly wonderful...I took some photos, but I’m not sharing the best ones so that you can visit and experience it for yourself... Most importantly, this is a free museum you can simply walk in, sit for a while, and enjoy your time... The restrooms are also very clean and well maintained...

Great museum! The impressionist wing is wonderful with nice touches of sounds which make experience even better, it’s like an island of piece. Museum is organised exceptionally, it’s free and still have security boxes to leave belongings. They also have comfortable zones to enjoy great pieces of art
Amy Tupper★★★★★
While the museum itself is huge, the collection is sized perfectly and tells a wonderful story about French painters. The Impressionist paintings are well-lit and organized well. It's a hidden gem of France.
J Colin★★★★★
Great museum to visit. The main appeal is its impressionist collection, but the other sections are also very well framed, particularly the Dutch art section. It is a manageable size with kids and it is Free! (the price to quality ratio could not be better). A "must visit" during your stay in the city.
Chastain Meyers★★★★★
I was extremely impressed with this museum, it was free and I could’ve easily experienced a similar-quality museum in the states for $15-25. They had a Monet painting of the local Rouen cathedral, which was very surreal after seeing the cathedral in person that day. The wide range of paintings, sculptures, vintage furniture and more surrounded by gorgeous architecture was amazing

This museum is unlike anything I've ever visited before. It's located in an old church, and it showcases all sorts of ironwork from throughout the ages. Entrance is free! I found the sections on keys and locks the most interesting. Given the standardization of modern lock mechanisms, it's easy to forget just how complex locks can be. The section upstairs on scales and weights was also very interesting. The plaques and informational cards are exclusively in French, so while you can still appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that went into creating each of the pieces, you either need someone who knows French or the ability to translate in order to get the full picture.

Unique museum, one of a kind. Lots of interesting iron works from the past . Me and my son, even my wife , enjoyed it

An absolutely fascinating and unique museum, unlike anything else you’ll find in Rouen 🗝️. It’s entirely dedicated to wrought iron art — from medieval locks, keys, and gates to delicate household items and signs that tell centuries of craftsmanship and history. 🏛️ What Makes It Special The museum is housed in a beautifully restored former Gothic church, which adds even more charm and atmosphere. The play of light through the stained glass windows gives a magical feeling as you walk among iron masterpieces that once decorated real homes and streets. 🔩 Why It’s Worth Visiting You don’t have to be an artist or blacksmith to appreciate the creativity and skill behind every piece. Each item has a story — from ancient locks that look like puzzles to elegant iron signs that once guided travelers and merchants. 📝 Practical Info ✅ Free entrance (check schedule in advance, hours may vary) ✅ Great for families, couples, or solo travelers interested in art and craftsmanship ✅ Combine your visit with the nearby Rouen Museum of Fine Arts — they complement each other perfectly A small but powerful museum that proves art isn’t just on canvas — it’s in the metal, history, and human imagination 🔥 ⸻ For more tips follow me on Google. I have a lot of maps and places to visit all around the world 🌎 all for free for my followers on Google Maps. @Amagi.zi

One of the loveliest spots in this well-run city, filled with pieces of incredible craftsmanship and astonishing detail. We had fun guessing the function of some of the old objects on the shelves, which have long ago lost their usefulness. In addition the museum is free, so you would basically commit a crime against yourself by not passing by this place
Victor Cegielski★★★★★
Outstanding museum the gentleman working there was most helpful with information in history of the collection.beautiful beautiful building also admission was free

An immersive historical journeys of rooms with a historic Rouen setting that deliver the history and ultimate demise of Joan of Arc. Atmospheric rooms with videos and items that educate all ages on this whirlwind story of the young Joan and her impact on the 100 years war. A good option for a hot afternoon to avoid the high heat. We did not book and paid on entry and took the next tour. Narration is in French, however translation devices with headphones are included in entry. If you don't know the story and want to immerse not too far from where she was burnt at the stake this in an interesting couple of hours. Prices are reasonable and staff speak English and are helpful.

Often with children you can be sceptical of tours like this, but this is well worth the time and money. The ticket price for a family of 4 with audio is under €40. The tour takes about 90 minutes but it moves and there is seating in each section. The immersive aspect is great, it really comes to life and tells you the story from the beginning of Joan and her life. The audio is perfectly timed as well- often when listening in another language, it fails to keep pace, but this was spot on. Would highly recommend. Great experience. Rooms are amazing to look through post the immersive aspect of the tour. Great for adults and kids. Bathrooms available.
Sidónio Sousa★★★★★
A must visit! The museum is really well thought, with many interesting corners and amazing views from the corridor. Well worth the price paid.
Antonios Liamis★★★★★
Extremely well implemented. The story telling is very immersive and hooked me completely. That is something the frnesh are really good in. There is an elevator in case you cannot walk stairs that well. Every 15 minutes or so, you can start the tour in your own paste. Perfect value for money!

Absolutely stunning immersive experience! Well presented with all the facts and very atmospheric. A visit is necessary if you go to Rouen!

The museum is on the house where Flaubert lived. The museum itself is nice with some great items. Free entrance.
Marcus Wilde★★★★★
Friendly welcome and free. Small but interesting medical curios (including Napoleon's death mask, and baby poo scale!) and history of the Flauberts. Quiet, restful garden. Worth the walk from the town centre.
Ali AlMusawi★★★★★
Free admission, small museum and reasonable collection.
Nick R★★★★★
An incredible insight into old medical practices interspersed with the life of Gustav Flaubert, author of Madame Bovery. A small museum but very pleasant and free to tourists. We'll worth a visit when in Rouen.
Evelien Foppen★★★★★
Very nice museum, I even got to practice my French a bit with the kind man at the reception. I definitely recommend if you like a smaller museum with curiosities and interesting reads.

We didn't know what to aspect going into the museum, but it was really cool! It can be as long as you want it to be, we where there an hour or so, but it could be longer if you do all the games etc. Especially the second to last room with the sort of movie, was very cool to watch! I am already interested in the viking period and history in general, but even if you don't know anything or don't really care, this can still be cool and interesting, also for young kids (age 5 and up). We were very pleasantly surprised!
Jen Scouts★★★★★
A really immersive experience! Games and interactive panels and items throughout and the last room was just incredible! Make sure to leave 25 mins at the end of your visit to really appreciate that last room. Child friendly, informative, super!

Timed tickets with lockers for small backpacks. Bar and restaurant at rear of building
Rachel Olsen★★★★★
A great exhibit! Truly immersive, and interactive, good for the whole family. - Completely step free with lots of places to sit - Changing table and disabled accessible toilet - Everything was available in both English and French My only possible complaints: - flickering lights throughout the exhibit, some which mimic candlelight, can make it difficult to read some signs - not okay for those with epilepsy
John Kyatt★★★★★
This was a great experience and although I already knew how Vikings became Normans, this provided a very detailed description of what went on in the 10th century. The audio visual experience was excellent. The staff went out of their way to help us. We spent two hours there.

We celebrated our 7-year-old daughter's birthday at L'Atrium, and it was a wonderful experience for her and her 10 friends, both informative and fun. The children discovered new things while enjoying themselves, guided by an animator on a delightful tour. We were also given a room to cut the cake and open presents. Everything was planned in advance, so there were no surprises. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate your child’s birthday, L'Atrium is definitely worth considering.

A wonderful discovery at the Atrium in Rouen! The "Ocean" exhibition is both fun and educational, perfect for children. I went with my 6-year-old son, and he loved participating in the investigation to find the monster that attacked a boat. The activities are well-designed, interactive, and accessible to even the youngest visitors. You learn so much about the sea, animals, and the environment while having fun. The staff is welcoming and helpful.
F B★★★★★
I spent a morning there with my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. The ocean exhibit is fantastic, even for little ones—very fun and interesting. We also visited the planetarium for toddlers, which is excellent. I highly recommend it.
Youma Tall★★★★☆
Fantastic visit for our son's birthday! The children had a wonderful time. A slight disappointment with the storytelling tour, which wasn't really a story at all; the children weren't engaged. The organization was excellent, with a room reserved just for us that we could decorate as we wished. The price for the package for 12 children is very reasonable! I highly recommend it!

Very nice tiny but extremely well organized museum. A bit vintage style - perfect for those who loves craft and marine history. Very authentic cozy place with a welcoming staff. Totally recommended! It also gives a glimpse into a history of Rouen as a port city which is actually hard to tell if visiting only downtown.
Bobbie Mills★★★★★
It’s worth also walking past the museum to see the port infrastructure itself - industry on impressive scale

One of the best museums I've seen so far. Well organized with lots of interesting information and exhibits. The gentleman at the entrance is very knowledgeable and helpful. Totally recommend.

Tips for Visiting Museums in Rouen

To ensure you have a seamless and enriching cultural experience, it helps to plan your visits with a few local insights in mind. Rouen’s museum scene is accessible, but knowing how to navigate the schedules and logistics will save you time and money.

  1. Plan Around Tuesday Closures: While this varies by season, many municipal museums in Rouen are traditionally closed on Tuesdays. Always check the official website of your chosen museum before heading out to avoid disappointment, as holiday schedules can also differ from standard opening hours.
  2. Take Advantage of the City Pass: If you plan to visit three or more major attractions, look into the Rouen Normandie Pass. This tourist pass often includes entry to the main museums, public transport, and discounts at select shops, offering significant savings for active sightseers.
  3. Walk Between Venues: The historic center is highly pedestrian-friendly. Rather than driving and worrying about parking, walk between the museums. This allows you to stumble upon hidden architectural gems, from medieval courtyards to the modern Palais de Justice, enriching your overall experience of the city.
  4. Visit the Beaux-Arts on a Rainy Day: Rouen is known for its unpredictable weather. The Musée des Beaux-Arts is the perfect indoor refuge for a rainy afternoon. Its massive collection and comfortable interior can easily occupy you for three to four hours, making it a practical and culturally rewarding shelter.
  5. Check for Free First Sundays: Many of Rouen’s municipal museums offer free admission on the first Sunday of every month. While this is an excellent budget tip, be prepared for larger crowds. Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the collections in relative peace.
  6. Combine the Ironworks and Joan of Arc: The Musée Le Secq des Tournelles and the Historial Jeanne d’Arc are located very close to each other. Pairing these two distinct experiences—one focused on artistic metalwork, the other on immersive medieval history—makes for a perfectly balanced afternoon in the old town.

Exploring the museums of Rouen offers a profound connection to the layers of history that define Normandy. From the delicate interplay of light captured by Impressionist painters to the sturdy craftsmanship of medieval blacksmiths, the city’s collections celebrate both the grand and the everyday. These institutions provide a quiet counterpoint to the bustling streets outside, allowing you to slow down and appreciate the details.

As you leave the final gallery behind and step back onto the cobblestones, you will likely find that the city itself looks a little different. The facades seem more intricate, the history more tangible, and the spirit of Rouen more vivid. Whether you are here for a weekend or a week, dedicating time to these cultural landmarks will undoubtedly be the highlight of your Norman adventure.
