Perpignan occupies a fascinating sweet spot on the French map. Known as the capital of French Catalonia, this sun-drenched city sits just a short drive from the Spanish border and the Mediterranean coast. It carries a distinct identity shaped by centuries of borderland history, blending French elegance with Catalan fire.
Unlike the polished, museum-like atmosphere of some historic French cities, Perpignan feels genuinely lived in. Locals sip coffee on palm-lined squares, market vendors shout in a mix of French and Catalan, and the scent of grilled seafood drifts from narrow alleyways. It is a city that rewards slow exploration rather than rushed sightseeing.
Most travelers use Perpignan as a gateway to the beaches of the Côte Vermeille or the Pyrenees. Yet those who linger discover a compact urban center packed with Gothic architecture, vibrant street art, and one of the most underrated food scenes in southern France. The city’s scale makes it ideal for a weekend break, with nearly everything reachable on foot.
The cultural calendar here is lively year-round, from the processions of Holy Week to summer jazz festivals and the deeply rooted Sardana dances performed in public squares. Even a simple evening stroll through the old town often leads to spontaneous music, impromptu markets, or a lively game of pétanque.
For food lovers, Perpignan offers a distinct culinary identity that differs from both standard French fare and Spanish tapas. Local specialties include sweet Muscat wines, anchovies from the nearby port of Collioure, and hearty Catalan stews. Dining here feels relaxed, affordable, and refreshingly unpretentious.
Whether you are interested in medieval history, coastal day trips, or simply soaking up a slower pace of life under the southern sun, Perpignan delivers. The following guide covers the essential experiences that make this city worth more than just a quick stopover.

This palace/castle is a very easy 15/20 mins walk from Perpignan Train station and very easy to find on google maps. It’s a huge palace with lots to explore and a no brainer for the €9 fee to get in. There around 14/15 points of interest which are detailed on a laminated map which you can pick up in entrance to the main fort all printed in various languages including English. The steps to the top of the tower is very well worth the 360 degree view of Perpignan and the Pyrenees and there is lots to see about the history and what exactly is what used for and you finish off with the illuminated garden inside a dark room (See it to experience it) which depicts more history and the changing of the times. An excellent place for families and children

Amazing castle and exhibits. It is a self guided tour so make sure to walk up (and down) every staircase and step through every doorway. It would be easy to miss things if you’re speeding through.

Palace of the Kings of Majorca, a great visit, the palace was well maintained, it felt totally authentic throughout. I climbed to the top of the tower and got an amazing view. There was a light show in one of the ground floor rooms. Outside the entrance, the pine trees were being protected from processionary caterpillars, which was also fascinating. Toilets good, entry price good.

An incredible structure that, as soon as I walked in, for some reason reminded me of the stable at the monastery in Game of Thrones! The “Jardins Enluminés” exhibition was stunning, and inside I felt such peace with the transitions between the seasons.
From the top of the tower, you can gaze over all of Perpignan and imagine what it was like in ancient times…. what it meant to be a knight.
I loved visiting the church and the King’s chambers.
PS: The structure could use more care regarding dust cleaning along the stairs and rooms.

Like so many of the many magnificent churches in the region there is the sense of peace and serenity inside the building. The ornate sculptures and altars are amazing - too much to see in a short visit.

Beautiful French / Catalan gothic, inside also baroque. Among others, the founder of the basilica, king Sancho of Majorca has a tomb there.

Great church in peripnan .. calm and relaxed . It’s interiors are too good . Walkable from public transportation buses . You will find restaurants right outside of cathedral..

No lines, no crowd, beautiful and quiet cathedral. A bit more information in English would have been nice.

Beautiful Gothic cathedral that is located in the heart of the city. The place is well-preserved and is full of amazing architectural details. I particularly loved the stained glass windows. The peaceful atmosphere of the cathedral makes it a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

The museum is a bit sad, not much to see and doesn’t seem very well maintained, but if your patient and climb all the way to the top of the tower, the view compensates for it. What a view, I was just admiring the skyline.
Steven Clark★★★★★
This is a great visit and only 2 euros each person yes 2 euros, and you get to see this marvellous building on the inside with some interesting exhibitions and pay attention to the old doors and locks, there are a number of stairs located in the turret which are old spiral stairs like in castle's which takes you to the top for a fantastic view over the town rooftops bit of a climb but worth it.
Tracey Bee★★★★★
Great value, a gem of a place to cost visit.
The tower affords great city views, which are well worth the €2 entry fee.
There's exhibitions on 3 floors between the ground floor and the top viewing gallery, although everything is written in French
There's some videos on TVs also giving you insight into local history
A must do attraction when you're in Perpignan

Not a big musuem inside, but we can see different things about Catalan. Also, we can go to the top to see the view of the city. Considering the price is 2€, it is good to come.

Le Castillet is a beautiful historic landmark in Perpignan, and I’m glad I visited. The architecture is charming and it’s interesting to see such an iconic part of the city’s history up close. However, I was expecting a bit more inside — the space is smaller than I imagined, and there’s not much to explore. Still, it’s worth a quick visit for the lovely views and the chance to appreciate its significance to Perpignan.

The French commentary was too loud. Even with the English translation at volume in my earphones, the French was bothersome. It would be better if the train stopped at places so you could get off and take a few pictures because we were really "in traffic" a lot of times. The historical information was interesting.

I visited Hôtel Pams on a quiet weekday afternoon and was genuinely surprised by how richly ornate and lovingly preserved this place is. From the façade, it doesn’t shout “luxury,” but once you step inside, the transformation is magical: interior splendour, an onyx staircase, sumptuous murals and lovely art nouveau details. Entry is free

A must to your visit at Perpignan!
The place is so fancy and relaxing. We recommend going to the garden and taking a break there. Also they offer leaflets with plenty of information about the history and the building.

Hôtel Pams is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Perpignan. This historic mansion, built in the late 19th century, offers a unique glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past. The architecture and interior design are simply stunning, with intricate details and beautiful art nouveau elements that transport you back in time.
The mansion is well-preserved and maintained, making it a pleasure to explore. The grand reception rooms, the monumental staircase, and the charming patio garden are all highlights that shouldn’t be missed. The changing art exhibits hosted here add an extra layer of cultural richness to the visit.
One of the best parts about Hôtel Pams is that admission is free, making it accessible to everyone. You can easily spend an hour or more soaking in the beauty and history of this place. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to share interesting stories and facts about the mansion and its former inhabitants.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to visit, Hôtel Pams is a must-see in Perpignan. Don’t miss the chance to discover this elegant and fascinating piece of the city’s heritage.

A solid collection featuring, to me, some hidden-gem artists and cool hidden-gem works by Picasso (who is not even my favourite). The museum itself is nice, well organized and calm. Wholeheartedly recommend!
Rogier Holla★★★★★
Historic art in the heart of Perpignan. The permanent collection is full of contrasts with sections of medieval artwork, art nouveau and modern paintings. The temporary “Picasso & Maillol” exhibition was a real treat
Helen Williams★★★★★
Fab exhibition on Joan Miro, plus some works by Picasso and Dali. Not a lot of info in English
Andrei Petrescu★★★★★
I used the time to do a quick museum run while my parents were enjoying a coffee in the city. At 10 EUR it felt on the expensive side for a mid-sized French town, but the collection justified it. Baroque to modern, well organized, and more to see than I expected, including some Picasso pieces. A pleasant surprise for a solo hour well spent.
Trung-Tin Dinh★★★★★
My visit to the Musée d’art Hyacinthe Rigaud in Perpignan was an unforgettable experience. I had the pleasure of participating in a guided tour focused on the works of Jean Lurçat, and it was absolutely fantastic.
The museum itself is a beautiful blend of history and modernity, housed in two historic mansions that have been thoughtfully renovated. The collection spans from the 14th to the 21st century, offering a rich tapestry of art and history.
The guided tour on Jean Lurçat was particularly impressive. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, bringing Lurçat’s diverse body of work to life. From his vibrant tapestries to his innovative ceramics, the exhibition was a deep dive into the artist’s creative genius. The thematic exploration of the elements—Earth, Fire, Water, and Air—was both educational and visually stunning.
The museum is well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and helpful, enhancing the overall experience. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking for a cultural outing, the Musée d’art Hyacinthe Rigaud is a must-visit in Perpignan. The Jean Lurçat exhibition, in particular, is a highlight that shouldn’t be missed.

It's free. A very quirky building full of stuffed animals, lots of insects, they also have a MUMMY. I really enjoyed my visit, the young lady on reception was friendly and welcoming.
Phil Corbett★★★★★
Old, faded splendour, dark and dusty museum. I was the only person in on my visit and it seemed really spooky - needless to say, I loved it! I was too scared to see the mummy as it was in a very dark room and I was afraid of the curse.
Super friendly staff and well worth a visit. I loved it.

Many things packed in a small place. Mainly corals, animals of the land, the sea and in the air, rocks, shells, and a mummy. Free entry. Worth the short visit, since it's nearby the other places of interest in the old town.

I would totally recommend going there between siesta hours while most bar/restaurants are closed, you have sitting space, free wifi and ac, to pass the time and a few interactions that are worth checking. At night when it’s closed you get (in my opinion) the best view, the lighting’s beautiful and drinking a wine at the bar across it was an amazing experience.
NM Ruff★★☆☆☆
I have never been treated this rudely in any French city's tourist office. The two women working that day literally turned their backs on me as I approached the counter. I stood there for a minute or two and then politely asked them about the La Sanch. "We have nothing." Then they walked away and started stocking shelves.
Fortunately, I was able to find the information I needed elsewhere.
The two stars are not for the staff, but for the brochures and the beautiful building itself.

Very nice place to visit. Parking was only €7 for all day and I’m sure you would have a nice time splashing about in the water on a hot day. However, it obviously is no longer a “hidden gem” and it was very busy at the water when we got there to take a look around. It was a hot day and we only popped in after visiting some local caves nearby, so we didn’t make an actual trip for the visit. It was pleasant to look around but you couldn’t get near the water because of the crowds. The car park was clean and today but the facilities were basic - a grotty looking Portacabin sited next to the entrance! The exit was also fairly confusing as it takes you through a number of tracks through vineyards before getting you back on the main road. Glad we visited though and we might aim to get there earlier when we’re next in the area as it looks like it’s worth a second look
mashkaprrosto★★★★★
This is an awesome spot. You drive up and park for just 6 euros for the whole day (until 6 PM). There’s even a bio-toilet on site, which is convenient.
From the parking area, it’s a short walk to the water — and wow, it’s deep! About 18 meters, surrounded by cliffs. The water is crystal clear, and you can actually see fish swimming around. Some people were kayaking, others just floating or swimming.
Kids were jumping off a rope swing that’s tied to a tree — you climb up the rocks and launch yourself into the water.
We brought our 2 dogs along, and it turned out to be very dog-friendly. Our pups swam right alongside us. And barking :)))) Nice area around to walk dogs.
Overall, a really unique and fun experience. Definitely worth checking out!
Joel Rosen★★★★★
This place is straight up magical. We visited it in winter and even then it was drop dead gorgeous as a location.
By the way, the whole area is fantastic for scenic walks.
Please respect the local rules such as not swimming on the left bank of the river (it’s a drinking water source) and keep it clean so everyone can keep enjoying it.
E Brinkman★★★★★
Awesome place for climbing and swimming. Clean and fresh water from the Mountains. Clean beach at the lake. Paid parking - €8 for a Day.
Neil Moser★★★★★
You can hike 49 minutes from Tautavel or drive directly to the gorge. We chose to hike in the 40 degree heat which made the plunge into the water all the more refreshing. There were many shady areas to chill and the water was perfect. The view of the gorge was spectacular. A very happy place for those seeking adventure as well as families.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit
To truly appreciate Perpignan, it helps to understand a few local rhythms and practical details. The city is compact, but knowing when to visit certain spots, how to navigate the Catalan language, and which seasonal events to prioritize can elevate your experience significantly. These tips will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls and explore the city like a savvy local.
First, time your visit around the morning markets. The daily produce market on Place de la République and the larger Saturday market near the Castillet are at their liveliest before noon. Arrive early not only for the freshest fruit, cheese, and charcuterie, but also to experience the authentic social heart of the city before the midday heat sets in.
Second, embrace the Catalan language. While everyone speaks French, you will see street signs, menus, and cultural posters in Catalan. Learning a simple greeting like “Bon dia” instead of “Bonjour” earns warm smiles and signals respect for the region’s distinct heritage. It is a small gesture that opens doors in family-run shops and tapas bars.
Third, use Perpignan as a base for half-day escapes, but do not rush back too late. The nearby beaches of Collioure and Argèles-sur-Mer are spectacular, yet the old town of Perpignan is most atmospheric after sunset. Plan to return by early evening, when the stone facades glow under streetlights and the squares fill with locals enjoying an apéritif.
Fourth, pack for strong sun and sudden wind. The Tramontane wind can sweep through the Roussillon plain with surprising force, even on otherwise warm days. A light layer and sunglasses are essential year-round, while comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable for the cobbled lanes of the historic center.
Finally, do not over-plan your meals. Perpignan’s best food experiences are often spontaneous—a tiny bistro with a handwritten Catalan menu, a bakery selling fresh fougasse, or a wine bar pouring local Banyuls by the glass. Leave room in your itinerary for unscripted culinary detours.
Perpignan does not demand a rigid checklist. It rewards those who wander without a fixed route, pause for a coffee on a sunny terrace, and allow the city’s blend of French and Catalan rhythms to set the pace. The architecture tells stories of kings and merchants, but the real character lives in its markets, squares, and family-run kitchens.
As you leave, you will likely carry with you the taste of Muscat wine, the sound of church bells echoing through narrow streets, and the memory of a city that feels both proudly Catalan and unmistakably French. That lingering sense of place is precisely why Perpignan deserves a spot on any southern France itinerary.
