The French Riviera is synonymous with glamour, but for locals and savvy travelers alike, the true soul of Nice is found in its bakeries. There is a profound difference between grabbing a generic croissant and stepping into a neighborhood boulangerie where the butter is high-quality, the dough is fermented slowly, and the recipes have been passed down for generations.
Whether you are looking for a flaky pain au chocolat to enjoy on the Promenade des Anglais or a crusty baguette for a beach picnic, the city is a paradise for pastry lovers. Navigating the culinary landscape of Nice can be overwhelming, especially with the influx of tourist traps near the Old Town.
While many establishments offer visually appealing pastries, only a select few maintain the rigorous standards required by French artisan bakers. The difference often lies in the details: the lamination of the dough, the sourcing of the flour, and the restraint used with sugar. This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the most authentic experiences the city has to offer.
This curated list focuses on establishments that prioritize craftsmanship over mass production. From historic institutions that have fueled the city for over a century to modern artisans pushing the boundaries of viennoiserie, Nice has something for every palate.
We have evaluated these locations based on the quality of ingredients, the texture of their bread, the creativity of their pastry chefs, and their standing within the local community. Because the French take their bread very seriously, the competition for the title of “Best Baguette” is fierce here.
Many of the bakeries listed below have won official awards from the city or region, a testament to their technical skill. While the debate over the best pissaladière or tourte de blettes may never be settled, the venues below represent the gold standard for baking in the Alpes-Maritimes.
It is worth noting that the rhythm of a French bakery is specific. The best bread often comes out in the early morning and again in the late afternoon, just before the dinner rush. To experience these locations at their peak, plan your visits accordingly and do not be afraid to ask the staff for what is freshest out of the oven. They are usually eager to share their passion with curious visitors.
Without further delay, here are the must-visit bakeries that define the flavor of Nice.

This was our very first stop in Nice, and it definitely lived up to the hype! This famous boulangerie has been all over social media, and after visiting, we completely understand why.
It’s a tiny but charming place packed with pastries, sandwiches, pissaladière, and other delicious baked goods. When we came for breakfast, the queue was almost nonstop, but the staff were still very friendly, helpful, and welcoming.
We tried their pistachio croissant and, of course, the classic plain croissant. I had a matcha oat latte while my husband ordered a café latte, and everything was absolutely delicious. Honestly, they serve some of the best croissants I’ve ever had! 🥐
We loved it so much that we came back again to try the Biscoff croissant, and it did not disappoint.
Definitely a must-try when visiting Nice 🇫🇷

Hands down one of the best bakeries in Nice! Get there at 7:30am just in time for it to open and watch them pulling fresh croissants and bread out of the oven. They also have great coffee, cappuccinos, and square pizza slices which are to very good. Local place, hidden gem bakery.

Really bad, low quality croissant. Not flakey or buttery.
Why is it so highly rated??? If it is highly rated on social media then do you give it 5 stars? The “award” it won for best croissant was from a bicycle shop Golden Cycles 😂
Excellent coffee, however! Unusually delicious café crème for a bakery!
And fantastic customer service from happy energetic staff!

I was really looking forward to trying their pistachio pain suisse and pain aux raisins, but unfortunately, I left disappointed. The pastries lacked the crisp, flaky texture I was expecting and didn't live up to the hype. I've definitely had much better pain suisse at the nearby La Base Bakery, where the quality and texture were far superior. In my opinion, you're better off skipping the line and the hype and heading somewhere that serves baked goods that are truly worth every bite.

I think this is the best bakery in Nice.
I cannot decide what is the best to try croissants with ham and cheese (heated) or croissants with raspberry, everything is so delicious.
Prices are great.
Service is fast and they are very kind there.

I recently visited here during a cruise stop in Nice. It was right on the main street surrounded by shops and vendors. It wasn’t too busy and finding a table was easy. I ordered pain au chocolat and a Niçoise salad sandwich and an iced latte. There were plenty of pastries and baguette sandwiches available to choose from. The girls behind the counter recognized that I spoke English and were able to communicate with me easily. But the interaction felt uneasy, due to a lot of giggling and conversation during the transaction.

Boulangerie Jeannot is a lovely, classic French bakery in the heart of Nice. The selection of pastries and desserts is beautiful, everything looks fresh and carefully made. The flavors are well-balanced, not overly sweet, just the way good French pastries should be.
The atmosphere is elegant yet welcoming, and it feels like a place with tradition and pride in quality. A great stop for breakfast or an afternoon treat if you want something genuinely French.

Nice pastries. Pan au chocolate was really good. Café au lait was also very good paired with the pastry. The outdoor seating was very nice to stay for a while.

Workers are very pleasent and helpful.
We had croque monsieur, bagel, coffee and croissant with almond.
Everything was very delicious. Lady helped us to choose the best option.
Only one thing that was bad was number of pigeons and amount of their feces on and around tables.
Katarzyna Czarkowska★★★★★
Very French, with a great food.
The choice is huge, from club sandwiches to sweets. We visited few times and tried different food. We were over the moon each time.
There are enough tables outside to sit down and watch the street the French style.

Great bakery with an excellent iced latte. The barista initially forgot our oat milk, but as soon as he realized, he immediately made us fresh replacements. (He was so kind. ☕️The pistachio croissant and pain au suisse were fresh, buttery, and delicious. The atmosphere was cute and cozy, the staff were friendly, and the shop was spotless. Would definitely visit again! 🥐🥐

As pistachio lovers, we were immediately attracted by the shop's name. Since it was also close to our hotel, we decided to give it a try.
Although pistachio is in the shop's name, only around 30% of the items actually contained pistachio (Not counting the pistachio t-shirt and other accessories). We were a bit disappointed because we had expected it to be a pistachio-themed shop.
Anyway, we ordered two pistachio pastries. The pistachio croissant came with a generous pistachio pastry cream filling, but the pistachio flavor was very subtle. The pistachio roll, on the other hand, was filled with pistachio praline, which delivered a much stronger pistachio flavor. However, the amount of praline was quite limited, and the small sprinkling of chopped pistachios on top didn't make much of a difference.
Overall, the pastries themselves were average, especially considering the price. At €4.50, they are a significant markup compared to a standard croissant that costs around €1.50. We don't mind paying more for high-quality pastries, and we understand that pistachios are an expensive ingredient. However, when pistachio is featured in the shop's name, we expected a more distinctive pistachio experience.
We also ordered a tiramisu choux which cost 7 euro. It was ok but given the price, it was not extraordinary.

Went here for breakfast with my girlfriend, and we had a wonderful experience. Jean-Baptiste, who was serving the drinks and pastries, was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and genuinely kind — truly one of a kind.

Such a lovely spot in Nice! The coffee is amazing — the oat milk flat white was so smooth and just perfect 😊 The pastries are fresh and absolutely delicious. We ended up coming back several times during our trip because we loved it so much. Definitely one of our favorite cafes!
Edit: We also tried the pistachio Flan — a perfect dessert for a hot day! It’s refreshing, not too sweet, and very smooth. We’ve tried others before, and this one is really great!

Ordered a cake for my sisters birthday. This bakery went above and beyond to help out!! I emailed them with questions and the replied right away. They made sure I got the cake I wanted on the date and early morning. They whatsapped on the day of delivery to let me know cake was ready. They delivered the cake to the our hotel personally since the delivery app was not working.
I have never experienced higher level of service. Thank you so much!!
The cake was beautiful and tasted amazing.

super delicious!! we got a raspberry tart and a lemon meringue tart, as well as an expresso. my lemon tart was SO INCREDIBLE! i have had so many lemon tarts but this might be the best one yet. the patisserie was very busy when we visited but the staff were totally on top of it, polite, kind, and worked well with those who didn't speak French to make sure they got the pastries they wanted! lots of indoor and outdoor seating. such hard workers and tasty treats! 100000% recommend

Been here twice since being in Nice! Good coffee, amazing pastries and pleasant staff. The desserts are just to die for! So good! I have a hard time choosing what to sink my teeth into 🤤 Had a box of macaroons my first visit and then a small coffee éclair my second time around. It’s true that it’s a popular place and can get crowded/might be a queue, but both times it wasn’t an issue for us. The only problem with this place is the pesky pigeons outside who hunt stray pastries and ATTACK unsupervised plates with crumbs. I suppose that’s not the patisserie’s fault though. Beware the birds and enjoy the pastries!

I’m humble enough to admit TikTok brought me here for the croissants. They were good, but after spending a few days trying some of the best spots in Paris, they didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. They have a great variety of filled croissants, but the chocolate one had very little chocolate and wasn’t gooey at all. Also worth noting, the coffee is from a Nespresso machine, so don’t expect a barista-made latte. Not bad, just not memorable enough to go back.
Imad Mahmoud Moghnieh★★★★★
Really nice spot for breakfast in Nice. They have a formule for €12 where you get a quiche or pizza, a dessert, and a drink, which is a very good deal for the quality and also quite filling.
We tried the spinach and goat cheese quiche as well as the salmon one, and both were delicious. The texture of the quiche was excellent and it really feels like they use good ingredients.
Simple place, good food, and a pleasant breakfast experience overall. Definitely a must-visit in Nice. Would come back.
There was a long queue and it was only 10 min wait.

Everything here looks so pretty it was so hard to decide 😍
We tried a few things here. The Citron Cake was really good, refreshing, and not too sweet which i liked. The Hazelnut Cake was nice too but too sweet, so it’s more for people who really like sweet desserts
Their pastries are flaky and good, but when it comes to pastries with cream or fillings, they can get a bit too sweet. Surprisingly, their sandwiches were my favs. Both the Salmon Avocado Sandwich and the Croque Monsieur Comte were fresh and tasty. Didn’t expect their savory menu to be this good since i thought they only specialized in sweets
Note: They’re closed on sundays and mondays 💡
★ Final rating: 3.4/5 ★
Fun selection overall. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll probably love it here. I personally just wish some of the items were a little less sweet, but still worth trying once if you’re in the area

We were after a pistachio croissant to try in Nice as it's one of our favourite snacks. After a quick search this was one of the first results popping up around the beach line. The croissants were very delicious and full of cream - important to note that they were extremely sweet, exactly as we like them. We got takeaway to enjoy them on the beach. Highly recommend but do try to be there early as they have limited amount. It was the second time we had to go as they were sold out the previous day 🥐

The food was average and didn't seem very fresh—perhaps because we went on a Sunday morning, but I don't think that’s an excuse. The eclairs were tasty, but the other items were average or subpar. Also, they didn't provide plates for the food. At first, I thought they misunderstood that we wanted to take away, but it seemed to be the practice for everyone. There is seating available upstairs, and the employees were very nice. Sorry for the average review, but this is honestly how I felt.

The most amazing cashew ice cream and sandwiches, also the staff are so kind and generous. Authentic (real) French BREAD bakery in Nice, amazing bread and brioche but just realize there are no croissants and no coffee. Just fresh baked bread, I got a baguette and it was still hot from the oven. I bought some jam and cheese from a shop down the street and it was an amazing experience. Best Baguette in Nice! Highly recommended if you want fresh baked bread in Nice.

One of the best places to try bread in nice. I tried their focaccia based bread topped with peppers that mimics pepperoni pizza but is actually vegetarian. Mama Baker in the Carabacel neighborhood in Nice is a must! For less than €13, I bought a mix of sweet and savory freshly baked organic items, each that encouraged me to go back for more. Savory - Parmesan-olive roll, chocolate bread roll, raisin scone. Sweet - coconut macarons, chocolate chunk and nut cookie, sesame bar. The Parmesan-olive, chocolate bread roll, coconut macarons and the chocolate chunk nut cookie really showed off the flavors and are the reasons I’ll be back. Plenty of other options to try next time I’m in Nice. And what’s great, the products are baked there. Highly recommend.

Absolutely one of the best bakeries we visited during our 3- week France trip in September. We went to this bakery 2 days in a row. The last day of our trip, we went to the bakery before opening and waited outside because I really wanted to buy a few baguettes and croissants before our flight. The baguettes were still warm and I almost cried because I was full of joy and it was a special moment for me. It's not easy to get fresh artisan baguettes in the USA. I love France because there are many professional independent bakeries and they are really great.
Thank you for your dedication and professionalism.

Located about 250m from Port de Nice Lympia, Lagache is a great place to enjoy some freshly baked treats. We tried several different items. The loaf of French bread was particularly hard and useful for beating someone who is annoying you. Our favorite was an almond bread with cream inside (I don't know the name) and a cylindrically shaped bread that is dense and perhaps toffee flavored (this one is circled in picture). Items are well priced. One of the shopkeepers was impatient with us because we couldn't decide what we wanted in less than 0.5 seconds, but the other woman was happy to serve us and very kind.

Such a good lunch!!! One of the best tuna baguettes and patisserie that came as a formula (a meal deal type thing!) AMAZING patisserie😆 we ate at the tables and chairs outside but could take away for a quick walk down to the port!!

The best pain au chocolate we had in Nice! It was crispy and flaky on the outside, and buttery on the inside with the perfect amount of chocolate. I am only giving it 4 stars because the pain au chocolat with almonds was a bit too sweet and heavy for our taste.

Really great super buttery croissants. Like when you lift a croissant in your hand you can't help but notice the buttery weight of it. Needless to say, it is a real treat.

Went for the croissant at 3pm but finished at 11am, so go early. Heard its so buttery and nice.

We had breakfast here and everything was delicious! We tried the quiche (Jamon and cheese), croissant, pain au chocolat, and cappuccinos, everything was delicious and fresh! I recommend stopping here for breakfast if you’re around. The staff is very friendly, too! We had breakfast outside enjoying the sun with our dog 🐕

Great family run cafe, their food offerings were great. We were in Nice for 7 days and visited their cafe thrice. The mother and daughter were very friendly and welcoming. I wish I had taken pics of their food and the location. The chocolate eclairs and chocolate croissants were my kids favourite from all of nice ☺️.

Great local bakery. The baguette sandwich was great and the pastries were excellent. You can walk 5 min to the beach and eat them in the sun. What more do you want?

Took a couple of sandwiches to go and a double espresso (I'm a coffee guy), and a pain au chocolate. They were excellent and worked very well as a breakfast.
If you need to grab something on the go, this is a very good place. The pastries look amazing as well.

A modern yet classic bakery with so many delicious options to try. Stayed in Nice for two days and went to Lou twice. The raspberry croissant was a favourite. Their coffee is also satisfactory.

Exceptional bakery😋 offering delicious cakes and pastries. Staff were friendly and fast serving. I ordered Le Trompe-l'oeil was soooo yummy. The price deserved the sweet. I will come again and try new dessert 😍😋.

The bread is freshly made and the coffee tastes really good (and not like cardboard like in other shops). The servers and baristas are also very polite.

Tips for Enjoying Bakeries in Nice Like a Local
To truly maximize your culinary journey through the bakeries of Nice, it helps to understand a few local customs and etiquette rules. The French bakery experience is about more than just food; it is a social ritual. Understanding how to order, what to look for, and when to go will elevate your experience from that of a standard tourist to a well-informed gourmand. Here are some essential tips to ensure you get the best bread and pastries the city has to offer.
1). Learn the Lingo and Order Properly
While many bakers in tourist areas speak some English, a simple “Bonjour” upon entering and a “Merci, au revoir” when leaving go a long way. When ordering, specify if you want a “baguette tradition” (which by law contains only flour, water, salt, and yeast) versus a standard “baguette blanche.” If you want a sandwich, ask for a “demi” (half) baguette rather than a full one to avoid an overly chewy meal.
2). Ask for “Bien Cuite”
If you love a crusty, deeply caramelized loaf, ask for a baguette that is “bien cuite” (well done). If you prefer a softer, paler crust, ask for “pas trop cuite.” Bakers usually have varying batches available behind the counter, and they are happy to accommodate your texture preference if you simply ask rather than grabbing the first loaf you see.
3). Time Your Visit for Peak Freshness
Most bakeries in Nice open very early, often by 6:30 or 7:00 AM, and close for a few hours in the afternoon. The first bake of the day is usually ready at opening. However, if you are looking for an afternoon snack, wait until after 4:00 PM when the second batch of pastries and bread emerges from the ovens, timed perfectly for the French “goûter” (after-school snack).
4). Don’t Overlook the Savory Options
While croissants get all the attention, the savory offerings in Nice are exceptional and unique. Look for pissaladière, a local onion tart with anchovies and olives, or fougasse, a bread often studded with olives, bacon, or cheese. These are perfect for a light lunch and showcase the regional flavors of the South of France better than any sweet pastry could.
5). Bring Cash for Small Purchases
While most modern bakeries now accept credit cards, many still enforce a minimum purchase amount, often around 5 to 10 euros. If you are just popping in for a single croissant or a baguette, having some coins and small bills on hand will make the transaction smoother and faster for both you and the busy staff.
6). Respect the Bread
If you buy a baguette, carry it under your arm or in a tote bag, but never in a plastic bag that will make it sweat and turn chewy. Bread in France is meant to be eaten within hours of purchase. If you have leftovers, do not refrigerate them; instead, wrap them in a clean tea towel to maintain the crust, or use them the next day for French toast or croutons.
Exploring the bakeries of Nice is one of the most accessible and affordable ways to connect with the city’s culture. Each buttery bite tells a story of tradition, patience, and the high standards of French gastronomy. Whether you are starting your day with an espresso and a croissant or ending it with a fresh baguette to accompany dinner, these artisans ensure that every meal is memorable.
As you wander the winding streets of Vieux Nice or the elegant boulevards of the Carré d’Or, let your nose guide you to these exceptional establishments. By stepping into these shops, you are not just buying bread; you are participating in a daily ritual that has defined French life for centuries. Bon appétit.
