Perpignan occupies a privileged corner of southern France, where Catalan culture, French elegance, and a distinctly Mediterranean rhythm meet. Often used as a gateway to the Pyrenees or the beaches of the Vermilion Coast, the city itself rewards visitors with a compact historic core and a surprising variety of retail experiences. For those who love to wander, the city offers everything from sun-drenched produce markets to independent boutiques tucked inside medieval stone buildings.
Understanding where to spend your time and money is key to enjoying Perpignan like a local rather than a tourist passing through. The retail landscape here is not dominated by generic global brands; instead, it is characterized by family-run shops, artisans who have perfected their crafts over generations, and vibrant street markets that serve as the social heart of the community. Knowing the best times to visit and the distinct character of each district will dramatically improve your haul.
The city’s geography is walkable, with the palm-lined boulevards and the historic center flowing seamlessly into one another. The area around the Castillet and the narrow alleys of the Saint-Jean quarter are particularly dense with independent retailers. Meanwhile, the edges of the city provide access to larger retail parks and specialty food halls that cater to serious shoppers looking for regional produce and French household names.
Whether you are hunting for a specific piece of Catalan jewelry, a bottle of natural Rivesaltes wine, or simply a high-quality leather handbag, Perpignan delivers with a distinctive flair. The shopping culture here is unhurried; shopkeepers often take the time to explain the provenance of their goods, and many stores close for a long lunch, reflecting the deep respect for work-life balance in the region.
To help you navigate this vibrant retail scene efficiently, we have curated a selection of the most compelling addresses. From historic department stores that anchor the city center to modern malls that offer convenience, this guide covers the breadth of what Perpignan has to offer. We have focused on locations that offer a genuine sense of place, ensuring that your purchases serve as lasting memories of your time in French Catalonia.
Below is a detailed breakdown of the essential shopping destinations that define the Perpignan experience.

This is a great shop with great staff and choice and prices. But I have to add our visit was affected by the fact there was an attempted break in on our motorhome where a window was damaged at a very high cost to us. We have been tourists in France for decades and this is the first incident of this nature that we have experienced. The security at the centre were brilliant, they took details and ensured they would do their best and follow up with police and video footage etc. However this was not their first experience of motorhomes being targeted. They said the reply from the police may be slow if at all, so it wouldn't be a priority and the fact we were not resident in France would be another negative factor.
Should be 5 stars but a warning for others with camping cars = 3 stars.
I have to reiterate the staff and service overall deserve 5 stars, but thanks to some thugs I can only give 3 on my experience.
manteiga de cacau★★★★☆
A shopping mall including Auchan with good offers and variety with the option of online food shopping loaded in your trunk in less than 2 hours. Huge free car park with numbers. My advise: DON'T forget to pay attention where you leave your car otherwise you may spend long time looking for it, as it's happened to me!! 🙁

Compared to the shopping malls in central Barcelona, the selection of goods here was more interesting. They hold sales at certain times of the year, so I highly recommend it. It is less crowded on weekdays, allowing you to shop at a leisurely pace.

Nice store, good prices, friendly staff.

For Perpignan this is a good place to do some shopping. Not so much choice but for the location it is decent.
It is the same group as the one in Paris so if you have any issue you can also get a refund there.

An excellent shopping centre, good parking (and easy to get to from different directions - just follow signs "Chateau Roussillon") and wide range of shops.
Including the excellent Carrefour - the best Hypermarket I have ever visited.
Petrol available too.

Nice commercial center in Perpignan. The center includes many fancy shops for clothes and home furniture, along with carrefour as a supermarket providing a wide choice of food. The center also includes a D.I.Y shop, an internal surfing wave andmuch more. It is easily accessible and large parking areas are available.

Very nice and good sorted mall. The stores are modern, nicely decorated and the staff is always helpful. The first thing we do when we come here is check out what's new at Carrefour. Perfect way to start the holidays.

This mall offers a decent shopping experience with a variety of stores to explore. Whether you’re looking for clothing, electronics, or everyday essentials, there’s a good selection to choose from. The layout is easy to navigate, making it simple to find what you need.
The food court has a nice range of options, perfect for when you need a break from shopping. It can get a bit busy during peak hours, but that's to be expected in most malls. The parking situation is generally manageable, though it can be tricky during weekends or holiday seasons.
While it may not have the charm of boutique shops or luxury stores, it serves its purpose well for day-to-day shopping needs. The staff at the various outlets seem friendly and willing to help, adding to the overall pleasant atmosphere. If you're in the area and need to run some errands or treat yourself to a shopping day, it's definitely worth a visit!

Such a great food hall in the heart of Perpignan.
So many great food stalls to choose from but I went with the falafel wrap from the Syrian outlet and it did not disappoint.
Good value glasses of wine and a lovely buzzy atmosphere considering it was a midweek evening.

Great place to eat, drink, chat, socialise. It's full of people of all ages and races and it's such a fun place to be at.
We arrived early at 5pm when it was quiet but by 8pm it was packed and buzzing with such a good vibe.
There's plenty of places to choose to eat at, where you still feel a part of the vibe. Great place to be at for any visitor to the area. Highly recommended
James Slimming★☆☆☆☆
Food offerings really friendly but don’t use the bar if you’re English / are in France to watch RL. Pretend not to understand your order / will get plastic wine glasses whilst locals get glass. French is not perfect but managed to communicate fine whilst cycling across France recently. Plenty of other places in Perpignan with great welcome. Arrogant
Avoid

Delicatessen from all corners of the world. From Vietnam to Portugal to Lebanon. Everything under one roof and wonderfully uncomplicated. You order and can then eat wherever you want. The most popular place is the open space in the garden. This is how to enjoy life.

Loved the atmosphere, the creative idea of choosing in a same place so many things to eat. Plus you can do take out yourself as a Marche. Very busy week ends and nights. Smiles and welcoming staff at all stations.

Hello,
Another very bad experience!
I dropped off my vehicle for a problem with the multimedia screen and a faulty airbag; the estimate was €600.
I was informed that the repairs were finished and that everything was okay. So I went to pick up my vehicle and paid the bill, to my great surprise.

We’ve visited this outlet for six years.
Prices are much higher now.
Benetton is still great for kids’ clothes.
Perfume stores have a good selection. Handy 30 ml and 50 ml bottles. Prices increased, but still worth a look.
The sunglasses selection is smaller. We skipped buying this time.
Food court upstairs. Coffee, ice cream, restaurants.
Large supermarket downstairs. Good Spanish products and souvenirs.
Many French shoppers because it’s close to the border.
Overall, still a pleasant outlet. But the bargains aren’t what they used to be.

Its a big Shopping center. Has allmost everything inclouding a large grocery store. It has a little Food mile where you can eat something and sit for a minute. A Must see would be the Lefties Store has nice clothes and good prices.

Beautiful modern building but no shops came to open. So it's a nice entrance for the train station.

Stayed in the hotel which was adjacent to the bus station, where we arrived, and the station, from where we travelled to Paris. Good cafés and a supermarket.

This place keeps getting better. However this year there was some painful trade offs. The small coffee shop near the door to the gate routiere vanished and posh shops bought space lots. The best is downstairs. The supermarket which is open until 7.30 or 8.00pm. Very friendly staff. They had a microwave oven for clients. Homeless and itinerant people love shops that supply a microwave oven as microwaveable food is inexpensive but often delicious. It is no longer there. What happened? Last time I saw one in a store was in le Gare Apollinaire Lisbon.

Tips for Shopping in Perpignan
To make the most of your retail therapy in Perpignan, it helps to understand the local rhythms and customs before you set out. A little preparation can save you from the frustration of finding your favorite boutique closed or missing out on the best market produce. Here is how to navigate the city’s shopping scene with confidence and ease.
Plan Around the Siesta: Many independent boutiques and specialty food shops in the city center close between roughly 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM, and often all day on Sundays and Mondays. Schedule your shopping for mid-morning or late afternoon. Large malls and chain stores typically remain open through lunch, so save those for the quiet hours.
Hit the Markets Early: If you are visiting the open-air markets, such as the market on Place de la République or the organic market, arrive before 10:00 AM. This is when the selection of produce is at its peak, the temperatures are cooler, and you will avoid the crush of the late-morning crowd.
Bring Your Own Bag: In line with French environmental regulations, plastic bags are largely a thing of the past. While boutiques may offer branded paper bags, carrying a reusable tote or a foldable shopping bag is essential, especially if you plan to buy fresh food, wine bottles, or artisan goods from multiple vendors.
Look for the "Artisan" Label: If you are searching for authentic souvenirs rather than mass-produced trinkets, look for stores that display a sign indicating they are an "Artisan" or "Métiers d’Art." This certification guarantees that the items are made locally by skilled craftspeople, whether it is jewelry, leatherwork, or textiles.
Explore the Side Streets: While the main boulevards and the area around the Castillet are convenient, the true treasures are often hidden in the narrow, winding streets of the historic center. Streets like Rue Mailly and Rue des Augustins are lined with independent bookshops, vintage clothing stores, and gourmet food halls that offer a much more unique selection than the high-street chains.
Perpignan’s charm lies in its ability to blend the practical with the beautiful. As you move from the bustling market squares to the quiet, shadowed lanes of the old town, you will find that shopping here is less about consumption and more about connection. Each purchase supports a local family, preserves a tradition, or captures the flavor of the region.
Whether you leave with a suitcase full of Catalan delicacies or simply a single, handcrafted piece of jewelry, the experience of seeking it out is part of the allure. Take your time, engage with the shopkeepers, and allow the distinct character of this southern French city to guide your choices.
