Finding a restaurant in Nice that still honors the true culinary soul of the French Riviera can be a challenge. As the city has grown into a global tourist destination, many kitchens have adapted their menus to suit fleeting trends and international palates. Yet, for those willing to look beyond the neon signs and photo-heavy menus, a world of time-honored gastronomy remains.
Traditional French cuisine in Nice is a distinct and beautiful hybrid. It blends the rustic, produce-driven ethos of Provençal cooking with the technical precision of classic French gastronomy. This is the land of slow-simmered daubes, stuffed vegetables, delicate fish in beurre blanc, and decadent desserts that require patience and skill. It is food that is deeply connected to the Mediterranean landscape but executed with a formal respect for French culinary rules.
Dining in these establishments is about more than just sustenance; it is a cultural ritual. The atmosphere is often defined by white tablecloths, polished silverware, and a level of service that prioritizes discretion and expertise. These restaurants are the guardians of recipes passed down through generations, often operated by families who have spent decades perfecting their craft.
Choosing a traditional restaurant in Nice means prioritizing authenticity over novelty. It means understanding that a true salade niçoise contains no green beans or potatoes, and that a proper bouillabaisse requires time and specific local rockfish. It is a commitment to experiencing the region as it was meant to be tasted, away from the hurried pace of modern fast-casual dining.
To help you navigate the city’s vast culinary landscape, we have curated a list of the best establishments that remain true to their roots. These are the places where locals go to celebrate milestones, where the wine lists are curated with regional reverence, and where the flavors of Provence are treated with the respect they deserve.
Whether you are seeking a rustic bistro in the Old Town or an elegant dining room near the Promenade des Anglais, this guide ensures you taste the real France. Below, you will find a selection of the finest traditional French restaurants that Nice has to offer.

Amazing resteraunt, lovely food at very reasonable prices, we arrived just as it opened in the evening and there was already another large table waiting at the door too. Clearly very popular in the area and it is obvious as to why. We sat outside and they even provided some bug spray for us once it got dark. I liked how all the meals came with nice crispy herby roasted potatoes instead of chips, it reflected the extra care and attention put in to the food. I wish I could come back to try the rest of the stuff on the menu.

Service was friendly and attentive, and the roasted feta starter was delicious. The beef rib steak was disappointing though. It was cooked correctly, but the meat itself was tough and chewy — as you can see in the photos, I couldn’t eat about a third of it, and another third was fat. Maybe a third of the plate was actually good. For €28 they should pay more attention to the cut they’re using for this dish

One of the few restaurants that i would definitely come back to. Amazing food, great service and local vibes! We tried their roasted Camembert with truffles, burrata/ tomatoes and octopus stew. Authentic flavors and definitely should give it a try. Don’t miss their desserts. The baba is literally on fire and their creme burlee is to die for

Had a fabulous, friendly French dinner here. The staff / owner was very friendly and amazingly attentive. The food was excellent and delicious and obviously the chef was amazing. The flaming rhum baba was exceptionally light and tasty. Highly recommended.

One of the best meals I’ve had in Nice!
First of all, the staff at Le Bouchon were so welcoming! We didn’t speak French and we were still welcomed warmly by the kind lady that runs the show. There’s an English menu available too to make things easier for tourists. She’s super attentive and very nice, we felt right at home. One of the best eating experiences I’ve experienced anywhere, much better service than Michelin star restaurants I’ve been to in France. Come and experience what France truly can offer in terms of food and dinning. Reservation is highly recommended as the restaurant is full and reserve early too because it’s a very popular restaurant.
The food is superb! Everything was so good and the best part is you won’t break your wallet like the other restaurants in Nice. I loved every bite! It’s very good french cuisine.
I will definitely come back again if I visit Nice. Thank you for the lovely meal, Le Bouchon.

Had an incredible experience! Loved everything, from the food to the service. The food was absolutely amazing, with such a creative and thoughtful interpretation by the chef. I enjoyed every single dish so much that I would honestly come back to Nice just to have this meal again!
The lovely staff were an extra bonus and made the whole experience even more special.
100 stars deserved! ⭐️

Our dinner at Le Panier was especially memorable as it was our first dining experience in Nice, and I was delighted to share it with my mother. It set a wonderful standard for the rest of our trip.
We chose the 7-course menu, and every dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. There was a great balance of flavours throughout the evening, with each course bringing something different and showcasing the quality of the ingredients.
The service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were attentive, welcoming, and happy to explain the dishes in English, which made the experience even more enjoyable. We also appreciated their consideration of dietary preferences and their willingness to accommodate them.
The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, and the pacing of the meal allowed us to savour every course without feeling rushed. It was a lovely experience to share with my mother and a perfect introduction to dining in Nice.
Overall, Le Panier provided a refined and memorable evening with outstanding food and warm hospitality. We would gladly return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special meal in the city

We had a great service, great food that felt fresh during this never ending canicule. We really enjoyed eating on the terrasse as well. At 8pm, it wasn't too hot outside and we could enjoy the meal. All in with the tasting menu and half a bottle of wine, 2 cocktails, it was 194 E.

Absolutely amazing, we will definitely be coming back! We had the five-course menu and left feeling completely full. You might think that the smaller portions wouldn’t be enough, but they were perfectly sized. Every dish was packed with unique, bold flavours and interesting textures that had us eagerly waiting for the next course. The service was spectacular from start to finish. The staff were incredibly attentive, friendly, and hardworking, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. The location is also fantastic with gorgeous streets definitely recommend sitting outside. Highly recommend! Definitely need a reservation as can be booked out a few days before hand.

Love coming here every season for the new set menu. So delicious every time. You get an option of usually 3 choices per course, app, main, dessert, every option is delicious. Small place with quality ingredients and a tiny but mighty staff, just the chef and the one fabulous waiter. Fast service delicious food all you could want.

Found this restaurant by chance while walking around Nice and didn't expect much
but it turned out to be one of the best meals I've had here.
The €25 three-course menu is incredible value (honestly feels cheap for Nice), and every dish was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is small, cozy, and has a lovely family-run atmosphere. The owners were super friendly, spoke English, and took the time to explain the menu.
Amazing food, great prices, and such a warm experience. Highly recommend!

The 25 € menu is available for lunch and dinner. They change the menu every 3 days. I was lucky to get a chair for lunch but reservation is recommended! Service was charming and efficient.

This was our favorite meal of our trip to Nice!
Warning: Reservations are hard to come by we dropped by and only reservations available were for 9pm two nights later. We took it.
The place is super relaxed. 5 maybe 6 tables which made the difficulty of reservations more understandable. Prix fix menu - 4 appetizers to choose from, 4 entrees and 4 desserts.
We were there with somewhat of a limited diet, but the options were awesome. We got a cauliflower appetizer and an artichoke one. Both were excellent. We all had the cod for dinner also delicious - served in a bath of traditional fish soup and with potatoes. The dessert was also excellent - we got the goat cheese in olive oil and garlic, the cream cheese with blueberry compote, lemon cheesecake and cinnamon “tiramisu”. Every bite was full of flavor and such cool takes on the food.
Now the intangibles - we arrived for our 9pm reservation, restaurant closes at 9:30 and we probably didn’t walk out until 11:15 and there was still another table of 8 people dining.
The host/waiter, Sebastian, was awesome. So friendly and we at no point felt rushed. In fact the opposite. When our daughter was slow in finishing her meal he joked with her instead of hurrying us along. Once we finished our main dish, he casually brought us our dessert and because we didn’t order his favorite (we didn’t know) he brought us out an extra to enjoy. We felt a little bad so somewhat accelerated the dessert phase so we could square up and leave. Instead he was unhurried, he casually cleared our table and chatted with us for a bit. It took us another 15 minutes before we finally said could we get the bill. He brought it to us another 5-7 minutes later.
We had a great experience and one of our best meals in France, if not the best.
Kok Koon Tabitha★★★★★
We recently had the pleasure of dining at this lovely spot, and I must say, it was a truly enjoyable experience! The service was top-notch, thanks to the owner who went above and beyond to ensure we had a great time. He took the time to explain the dishes, checked in with us regularly, and even played fun tricks on us - it was clear they were passionate about creating a memorable experience.
The set lunch was absolutely worth it - the portions were perfectly sized, and the food was delicious! We sat outside as they were fully booked, but the vibes inside caught our eye - it's clear that a lot of thought and love has gone into creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Overall, we'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal and a warm welcome. Well done, and we'll be back for more!

Chavdar S.★★★★★
We showed up on a Thursday noon without reservation but luckily they were able to seat us out outside on the sidewalk tables which were very charming - especially with the nice weather in May.
We had a bumpy start with the entrees the Mousseline de courgettes fleurs (Zucchini blossom mousseline) and Sablé breton de parmesan (Breton parmesan shortbread) just did not hit the right note with us as nothing stood out taste-wise.
But then the main courses arrived and they were divine. The French beef cheek stew (Daube de joues de bœuf française) was easily the best thing my tastebuds had tried the whole week we spent exploring Cote d'Azur. The stew arrived in a polenta cloud which tasted out of this world too. I've never tasted polenta with a texture like that. And the little pieces of vegetables swimming in this cloud were so full of tastes - amazing!
The Roasted sea bream fillet (Filet de daurade rôti) was very tasty as well. The ravioli stuffed with artichoke leaves (ravioles et feuilles d’artichauts breton farcies) which were on the side made the whole dish special. Together with the fish, they created an entirely new taste perspective - well recommended.
When it came time for desert, we tried the Warm dark chocolate tart (Tarte tiède au chocolat noir) which we found to be so-so but the Soufflé au grand Marnier accompanied by sorbet from exotic fruits tasted amazing.
Throughout the whole this time, the service was super attentive and they went out of their way to oblige us when we shared we only had 45min to complete the whole lunch as we had a plane to catch. Awesome work guys, respect!
All in all, Les Sens is a well recommended culinary experience when you are visiting Nice. I wish there was an extra star to give to these special restaurants that make your entire vacation a memorable experience.

A really nice atmosphere and really good food and experience.
We ordered the Zucchini blossom and Crab appetizers and both were very good. The main dishes were the roasted pigeon and sea bass and both were very good. Finally we shared a souffle for dessert and it rounded out a great night and experience.
The service and staff were all involved in key times throughout the dinner and were all outstanding and very friendly. When we return to Nice we would love to eat here again.
Kevin Bird★★★★★
An amazing resteraunt in the heart of Nice. We had a set menu (menu of the week) and it did not disappoint. The food looked amazing and tasted delicious. Could not fault the service. All the staff were friendly and professional. Booking is essential. My only critique is that as it's only open for a few hours in the evening it did feel very rushed between courses so did not really have time to relax between each plate, this is just my opinion and it would not put me off coming again.
T Chan★☆☆☆☆
Don’t understand how this place can get such a good rating. Food was awful. I ordered the three-course meal with cod. The appetizer stuffed vegetables looked good but tasted blend. The main dish cod was way too salty I couldn’t finish. The sauce was there just for decoration, not matching or enhancing the food. The dessert was again just for the look, it tasted too sweet and heavy with no layers of flavors. The service was way below par for an upscale restaurant. The waiters just put food on the table with no explanations and no asking about how we liked the food. No smile. Even the restroom was kind of dirty. I thought I was going for a relatively fine dining place but the quality was completely unacceptable. Do not go.
Zara D★★★★★
A wonderful lunch experience in Nice.
The food was excellent from start to finish. Each dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. The zucchini flower starter was delicate and elegant, the cod was perfectly cooked and flaky, and the soufflé dessert was absolutely superb—light, airy, and a perfect ending to the meal.
The duck breast was particularly flavorful, paired with an excellent sauce and accompaniments. It was slightly tougher to chew than I would have preferred, but the taste was outstanding. The only other minor criticism is that the cod was a bit oversalted for my palate, which slightly overshadowed the natural sweetness of the fish.
A special mention goes to the lovely waitress, who was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming throughout the meal. She even treated us to a shot of the restaurant’s homemade passion fruit rum. It was incredibly strong, but also a fun and memorable touch that added personality to the experience.
Overall, a refined and enjoyable dining experience with beautiful presentation, excellent flavors, and wonderful hospitality. I would happily return and recommend it to anyone visiting Nice.

Really excellent experience at Maison de Marie. The service was genuinely outstanding: attentive without being overbearing, very friendly, and the staff all had a great sense of humour which made the whole atmosphere feel relaxed and welcoming.
The food was also fantastic. The foie gras was rich and beautifully prepared, the prawn linguine came with genuinely succulent prawns, and both the gnocchi and escargot were excellent. Everything felt fresh, well cooked, and full of flavour.
The only small point worth mentioning is that the kitchen closes at 2:30pm, which felt a little unusual for a beach town restaurant. It also meant some fish dishes , particularly anything requiring longer preparation, were unavailable, so the menu became a bit more limited later into lunch service.
That aside, we had a brilliant meal and would happily return. Great food, great service, and a really enjoyable atmosphere.

What a great restaurant! Easily our best dinner in Nice. Absolutely loved the mains with the daube being the best one we've had yet. The octopus was outstanding, and the chocolate mousse was delicious although interesting (never had truffle and olive oil with mousse before). Service is amazing and the restaurant is in a beautiful tucked away setting. Very atmospheric and highly recommended!

We had a wonderful dinner at La Maison de Marie in Nice while celebrating with a party of 4. We ordered several different dishes to share, and everything was excellent. The highlight of the evening was definitely the lamb shoulder for two – it was incredibly tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The portions were generous, making it great value for the quality of the food.
To finish the meal, we ordered the Pavlova for dessert, and it was an absolute must-have! Light, fresh, and beautifully presented, it was the perfect ending to a fantastic dining experience.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting. We would highly recommend La Maison de Marie to anyone visiting Nice and looking for a memorable meal. We will definitely return on our next trip!
Sasinant Chancharoensin★★★☆☆
Great food, but the terrible service ruined our final night in France.
The chefs here are incredibly talented. The beef with ravioli and the seafood in bisque sauce were fantastic. Sadly, the front of house staff ruined the hard work of the kitchen.
We were ignored for 30 minutes after being seated, while tables who arrived after us ordered first. No focaccia is served while other tables got served once seated. After finally getting our food (which came out quickly), trying to pay took forever. Two different servers ignored our request for the bill, and my partner had to stand up at the table like a beacon just to get someone to take our money.
A simple meal of just mains and drinks dragged on for 2.5 hours solely due to staff incompetency. Instead of a nice final stroll through Nice, we had to sprint to the train station. Brilliant kitchen, but the service is lacking and is an absolute joke.

We are outside under a beautiful canopy of green. Food was excellent and one of the best meals we had in France including Paris. I had the La Marmite. de Marie (fish stew) and he had the Beef Daube. Both had amazing flavors. Naomi was our server and was fast, efficient, pleasant and played with our American humor and made us laugh.

We had a wonderful experience at this charming French bistro! The ambience was cozy and homey, making us feel instantly welcomed. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, even speaking some English, which made ordering a breeze. My linguine pasta with tomatoes and parmesan was perfectly seasoned, while my husband’s gambas with rice was bursting with flavor – you could tell they use top-quality ingredients. For dessert, I had the apple crumble—it was warm and crispy, while the apples were so fresh and deliciously tart. With generous portions and fair pricing, it was fantastic value for money.

Excellent local restaurant and great staff
Ingredients are fresh, great quality
Sardines is my favourite, very tasty. Highly recommended! 👍🏼 (However, avoid it if you can’t stand fishy taste - to me it’s okay though)
Linguine is okay, I prefer the one I tried in other restaurant
Both desserts are nice, especially the chocolate! It has a bit of lava syrup inside

Everything was perfect! Welcoming staff, delicious food and dessert. We had an unforgettable experience at Chez Acchiardo. From the moment we walked in, everything felt special—the warm, authentic atmosphere, the charming decor, and the sense of history woven into every detail.
What truly stood out was the story behind the restaurant. Hearing about the owner and how they used to make wine with his grandfather added such a personal and meaningful touch. It’s rare to find a place where tradition and passion are so deeply felt.
And the food—absolutely incredible. Every dish was exceptional, from the perfectly prepared meat to the rich, flavorful ravioli, and the desserts that were the perfect ending to the meal. You can really taste the care and quality in everything they serve.
This is more than just a restaurant—it’s an experience. I would go back in a heartbeat. Make reservations!

One of the best restaurants in Nice! Family business since 1927, extremely tasteful recipes and the ambience is cozy and friendly. Big thank you as well to Jean Francois for his warm welcoming. I can’t wait to be back!

This place has become such a huge trend on social media, ao it's not a surprise that it's always busy. We had a reservation for 9pm but still had to wait about 15-20 minutes for our table. Even at that time the restaurant was packed inside and there was a queue outside.
That said, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We were seated in the lower dinning area at a spacious corner table, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The food was delicious, the portions were generous and we had a great overall experience.
Highly recommend this place. Keep up the good work! 👏

From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere, I cannot say enough about how AMAZING everything was! Marie and her husband were so kind, nurturing, and wholesome owners. They really made you feel like you were family! This was quite literally the best meal we had in Nice. The duck was so savory and fresh and the fois gras is unlike any other we’ve ever tried. A true hidden gem in Nice and I highly recommend you try! Thank you to Marie and her husband!

Resto La Route Du Miam was the best dining experience I had during my time in France (Paris included). I wanted to dine solo, and when I spoke a week prior to Marie, the wife of the couple who owns it, she couldn’t give me an availability, but she said she wouldn’t forget me. And she didn’t! The reached out to me with availability and got me a table outside. I let them choose a wine and duck meal for me, and it was phenomenal. It felt like a home cooked meal, which made this experience unique compared to any other place you could find. Very lovely and fun couple. Definitely try to get into this place if you’re in the area!

A restaurant worth a second trip to Nice. The quality and passion that Jean-Michel and Marie put into running this place go directly into the food and dining experience at their restaurant. It’s like being hosted in their home.
The duck is their speciality. Half duck, foie gras, stuffing and potatoes, all in one plate. Their drink selections include quality wines and beers too.
I’m dreaming of the next time to visit Nice just to eat here for a third time.

Le Frog is an absolute must-visit in Nice. The food, atmosphere, and service are all top-notch!
Highlights:
Frog Legs: Perfectly prepared with garlic, herbs, and a crispy finish. The meat is incredibly tender—the perfect choice if you're trying them for the first time.
French Classics: A fantastic onion soup topped with a generous layer of melted cheese, and a melt-in-your-mouth Beef Bourguignon served with smooth mashed potatoes.
Mains: Juicy, glazed ribs paired with homemade French fries, and a light, flawlessly cooked white fish served with black rice.
Starters: A fresh and creamy burrata with vibrant cherry tomatoes and greens—the ideal way to start the meal.
The interior deserves a special mention: it's cozy, full of character, and features fun, colorful frog statues that set a wonderful mood. The service is fast and very welcoming.

This place gives you mixed expectations. The place looks classy but then the service and food feels it belongs to a bistro or pub.
We ordered steak and bbq pork ribs and they were just warm and fries were not crispy. Appears to have been sitting for some time. Definitely not freshly made food but one should expect hot food.
I guess order their specialty like frogs legs which we didn’t.

Food was amazing, best place to try frog legs and snails 👌🏻. The duck was beautifully cooked too. The service was really great also - waiters are fun and attentive. We stayed past closing time as we were finishing our wine bottle, so the waiters started putting tables away, but didn't rush us once.
Matthew Chocolatovsky★★★★★
We tried most iconic dishes from French cuisine: escargots, frog legs and fois gras. Each of them was really delicious and worth the price. Fois gras is melting in mouth exploding with sophisticated taste. Frog legs are very tender with great coating. Escargots are very buttery and nice spiced with garlic.
It's close to the coastline, but not enough to see it, which is a bit of a shame.

We had a company dinner here in Nice for a large group, and the entire experience was outstanding from start to finish. All communication and reservations were handled with great clarity and professionalism, making the planning process easy and stress‑free.
We agreed in advance on a set menu and wine selection, and both the food and the service were absolutely loved by everyone. To make things even more impressive, our group doubled in size at the very last minute and this was managed incredibly well by the owner, Jocelyne, with calmness and generosity.
Our dinner guests came from Italy, Germany, and Finland, and every single person appreciated the quality of the food, the service, and the warm atmosphere. Highly recommended for group dinners or special occasions. We truly hope to come back one day!

This was definitely the best restaurant we went to in Nice!
We found it very unusual and charming that the menu was presented in a blackboard that is set up for each table, one at a time. We were welcomed with a small cheese spread and bread, which was very nice.
We ordered "Barbajuan" (a Monégasque dish) for starters. For the main courses, we had the pork belly and the sea bass. For dessert, we couldn't pick one, so we ordered the crème brûlée and the financier with apple and lime cream.
Everything was very refined and well presented. The prices are also very fair considering the quality of the food and the standard prices in the city.

We found this restaurant while walking they were kind enough to find us a table eventhought they were fully booked. This is an amazing restaurant. The food was tasty and prepared fresh and with lots flavor. We had the grilled calamari, chicken and the risotto with water crest. Everything was delicious. For dessert we had the best crême brûlée I have tasted in our trip. We enjoyed the service provided by Jon, he was attentive and professional, and very friendly. He made our experience a 5 star 🌟🤩

We had our first meal of our France vacation here, and everything was excellent. The atmosphere, service, and food were all fantastic. The calamari was exceptionally tender and far exceeded our expectations. We also loved the risotto, which had a perfect texture and wasn’t overcooked. Highly recommended.

An absolute gem of a restaurant that is well worth a special trip.
We turned up on a weekday without a booking and luckily snagged the last table, as the place was absolutely buzzing. It did not disappoint. The staff were lovely and talked us through the menu, which was a nice touch.
Every dish was spot on: the fish tartare was dead fresh with strawberry, the octopus was perfectly cooked with rich flavour, and the mains were stellar. Fish cooked perfectly and paired well with the sauce, chicken breast is tender and juicy. The real winner was the pork belly—perfectly crisp skin and melt-in-the-mouth meat without being greasy. Even the crème brûlée was decent, though the mains stole the show.
It’s an incredible meal offering great value and food that won't disappoint, and I'll definitely be back.

Charming French restaurant with the decor that takes you back to a time I was simpler life. Service was friendly from people who truly love their job. The food très bien. We shared pate starter both chose the cuddle fish main and shared chocolate dessert. We definitely will be coming back and have already booked!!

Quirky cafe with down-to-earth wholesome French country fare. Roast chicken (“famous chicken”) and duck confit came in generous portion sizes. I would have liked the dauphinoise potato creamier but was still passable. The roasted vegetables starter was an unexpected winner with its sweetness. The star for me was the lemon meringue pie/tart. The lemon custard was tart and refreshing, the meringue had that nice crunch but remained light and the pie shell was thin and delicate. The chocolate mousse was also lovely with its lightness and strong chocolate flavour. The nougat ice cream was also good.

This place deserves all of the 5* reviews it has and I cannot comprehend anything less!
I came here with my boyfriend and family on a busy Friday night and had a great time.
The location was tucked out of major tourist areas but very easy to find and walking distance from our apartment. The interior is cool and kooky, a wonderful change from the usual beige tones we see far too often these days.
The menu is small but that’s because everything tastes amazing and is cooked to perfection. I will be dreaming of those crispy potatoes until I have a chance to come back.
The owner and the waiter were attentive all night and they managed to sort out some
calvados at the end of the meal much to my parents delight.
I recommend anyone visiting or living in Nice to visit this restaurant. Make sure you book, there was a queue of people outside and some groups had to be turned way.

A French restaurant with great French food and wonderful service (by the owner I believe). He was so congenial and intuitive (my husband dropped his fork and he was there with another right away). The meal is so delicious …duck confit for sure and the steak with the secret sauce is wonderful too. Escargots with pestos were superb even though on the small side. Finishing off with lemon meringue tart and the chocolate mousse (thick and not so sweet - one of the best and I don’t even like chocolate mousse). A prix fix dinner menu with 3 courses at €33 ea +€5 for what we ordered. Love this experience.

An Authentic French Feast!
Don't let the modest exterior fool you—this small, unassuming restaurant is a hidden culinary treasure. The moment you walk in, you are treated like family by the incredibly friendly owner and waiter, but it is the food that will truly blow you away.
The Starters: The escargot was classic, rich, and packed with flavor, while the foie gras was beautifully prepared and incredibly smooth.
The Main: The duck confit was an absolute triumph—hands down the best I have ever had in my life. Crisp skin, perfectly tender meat, and seasoned to perfection.
The Finale: You must save room for dessert. The mousse au chocolat was pure perfection—literally the best chocolate mousse I have ever eaten.
The only small critique is that the wine list could be a bit stronger. Specifically, adding a sweet dessert wine (like a Sauternes) to the menu would be the perfect match to pair with that amazing foie gras.
If you want an unforgettable, authentic meal with warm hospitality, do not pass this place up!

We decided to stop by because another restaurant couldn’t fit us in, and I’m very glad it worked out that way because this was one of our favorite meals we had in our entire 2 week trip. The confit duck was SO GOOD it’s a must try and the steak was really great as well, the sauce is especially delicious. Escargot as well was an A++ we did not have a single bad food item.
It felt like enjoying a home cooked meal but with the quality of a high end restaurant. Paul was really sweet and took great care of us. You can really feel the love inside the restaurant and we can’t wait to visit again!
If you are someone who tries hard to find places that feel authentic and are good but not just touristy - definitely, definitely come here.

I must say I’ve been traveling for a while and this was one of the best meals. I’ve had a long time I had to see Bas came with the most delicious potatoes. Don’t ask me. I know there was 1000 cal, but I didn’t care and vegetables we also had the chicken again delicious. We had a goat cheese salad again delicious and then I had a apple tart with ice cream now I could not even think about eating anymore, but I had to have that on my first day in France. Everything was delicious indoor outdoor dining we ate outside Jeff the owner probably and server was excellent. In fact I like it so much I’m going back again before I leave. Don’t miss this place.

Great services and food quality in Nice with a value for money pricing. Full hearted respect to serve customers. English menu, fast cooking to serve. Friendly service and friendly chef! 👍👍👍👍👍 And the chef would recommend one of the best restaurants in Paris, our next stop. Big contrast to the worst value for money and sub-zero food / service quality in a roadside big restaurant on the Main Street nearby.

Absolute gem, tucked away from the tourist areas. Seems popular with locals. Very friendly owner cooking simple quality food. The warm goats cheese salad was delightful. The owner will show you photos of the dishes on his phone and talk you through the specials board. Might be a good idea to book ahead during busy times

What a lovely find. The eponymous Jeff is the main server - charming and friendly. The bistro delivers perfect French classics. Not sure who the chef is but, he/she is on point. We shared duck rillet served with toasted bread and a simple salad. Then, a delicious, warm goats cheese salad with pear and a cockelle citron which had a little extra chilli kick. A pichet of vin Rosé and the world was a happier place. Merci Jeff!

My family and I had dinner at Madison F. this week and we were blown away by the delicious food, drinks, and the overall atmosphere. Chantelle and Jade were absolutely wonderful. Jade was not only our waiter but also our bartender. We really enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered including the seabass, steak and pork dishes, you really can’t go wrong. They were extremely accommodating to us and we ended up having dinner really late, around 10:15pm. We will definitely be back, this is a hidden gem.

The service was pretty surprising and appalling. We were an international group of 15 women who had made this reservation over a week in advance. Although we are from a variety of different countries, we all live in France so we have come to know that French restaurant service is certainly not as attentive as it might be in other places like the US, UK, etc and have grown used to it. Still, we were shocked by just how inattentive the staff was. Through the window, we often saw the waiter sitting down and going on his phone, when we had been waiting for anyone to come by to help us. It took about 30 minutes after we arrived for anyone to come bring us water or take our orders. He only came once to take our orders, both drinks and food together (instead of serving us drinks when we first arrived and taking our food order later, which is standard), and never returned to check if anyone needed another drink. When someone did want another drink they had to chase him down inside. When it came time to pay, he brought the check to our table and then promptly left without saying a word. We assumed he’d bring back the payment terminal for us to pay, but he instead never returned and we each had to go pay inside. It was bizarre just how detached and inattentive he was, especially when we were a large group that could have actually paid for more drinks, starters, dessert (no dessert menu was mentioned or offered), had we been offered these things. We have these large group dinners regularly in restaurants around Nice, and we definitely won’t have it here again. (The prices were really inflated for pretty average food, anyway).

Very nice atmosphere, delicious food, and excellent service
The restaurant was full but one young waitress managed the whole terrace by herself and was still incredibly friendly and attentive
Even without a reservation she welcomed us warmly and found us a table
Really appreciated her hard work we had a great experience!
We will definitely come back 😊

We wanted something different and a bit special for the last night of our holiday and decided to go for this place. What a great choice! Starting with the pastis menu then moving into the food itself. We tried 6 different dishes from starters to mains every single one of them was absolutely sublime. From a leaf wrapped lamb taco, to a flavoursome ricotta pasta, to a simply mind-blowing chicken and chips, we almost literally licked every plate clean. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service friendly and efficient and the decor brings a smile to the face. I only wish we lived closer.

New restaurant with a fun staff and a lot of seaside paraphernalia - including the bathroom! We had the squid, beef medallions, and fries plate (24€) and the fried chicken and fries plate (24€). Both were very good but, but for the same price, you have to get the squid, which was a large portion and has an amazing sauce. We sat at the bar and the bartender (Max) went above and beyond giving us tastings (and education) of the white wines and pastis liquors. We were treated well by the charming redhead waitress who met us when we walked in and Lilou, the sweet waitress who gave us an amazing dessert recommendation. Although a new restaurant, you will want to get a reservation, as this place is about to become very popular. We were most impressed when the chef came out to see us and make sure our dishes were good. Although common in new restaurants, I hope this tradition continues, as it only “costs” the chef 1-2 minutes, but makes a large difference for the customers. My wife thought the squid and Pistachio Lover chocolate dessert (12€) was one of the best meals of her life!!!
Attention Manager:
1. Put a horizontal footrest the length of the bar. There is nothing on the chairs or under the bar to rest your feet and sitting there for over 30 minutes is uncomfortable. Maybe even a fun, seaside one (e.g., wood oar).
2. Ensure your lattes have more milk and are not served so hot.

We had a fantastic dinner last week at Cagnard. The dishes are creative and modern, yet pay hommage to traditional Mediterranean food with high quality fresh ingredients - and are absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We loved every dish we had!
The ambience inside and outside on the terrace in the street is modern, yet nice and comfortable and little thoughtful details like the branded wine glasses, knives and the unique design of the bar and even the bathroom contribute to the special atmosphere. The whole service staff was very welcoming, extremely kind and attentive.
I highly recommend eating here, you will not regret it. We will definitely come back, when we're back in Nice! Merci beaucoup 😊

The ravioli and fillet were very average/ not worth it. The cod and sea bass carpaccio however, quite literally the worst meal I’ve ever had. I do not recommend this place at all!!!!! The waiter also saw that we didn’t eat our meal, and didn’t even inquire about it… that’s when you know.

We definitely enjoyed our dinner. The food was excellent and really delicious – we especially loved the fish with couscous, the beef fillet, and the complimentary amuse-bouche. The staff were polite, and the atmosphere by the sea was very pleasant.
For the very top experience, we would recommend offering two sets of cutlery – one for the starter and one for the main course. It felt a bit unusual to eat the fish with the same knife used for the pâté. Also, when the waitress asked “Finished?”, we understood it as referring to the food, but instead we received the bill. Otherwise, we would have stayed longer and probably ordered another glass of the excellent wine.
Overall, a truly delightful evening that we are happy to recommend!

How to Choose a Great Traditional French Restaurant in Nice
Selecting the right restaurant can make or break your culinary experience in the French Riviera. While the curated list above offers the best of the best, knowing how to identify quality on your own is essential for the rest of your trip.
The following tips will help you distinguish a genuinely traditional kitchen from a tourist trap, ensuring every meal you have in Nice is memorable.
1. Look for Menus Written in French Only
While many high-quality restaurants now offer English translations for convenience, a chalkboard menu written exclusively in French is often a sign of a kitchen that prioritizes local clientele. If the menu features complex French culinary terms that require a dictionary, it usually means the chef is cooking for an audience that understands the tradition.
2. Check for Seasonality
Traditional Provençal cuisine is entirely dependent on the seasons. If you see a menu featuring tomatoes, zucchini, and strawberries in the middle of December, it is a red flag that the ingredients are imported or frozen. A true traditional restaurant will change its menu frequently, highlighting spring lamb, summer ratatouille, autumn mushrooms, and winter game.
3. Observe the Daily Specials (Plat du Jour)
The chalkboard or verbal announcement of the “Plat du Jour” is the heartbeat of a traditional French bistro. This dish is usually made in limited quantities using whatever the chef found at the Cours Saleya market that morning. If a restaurant does not offer a daily special, it may be relying on a static, pre-prepared menu.
4. Look for Regional Wine Focus
The Côtes de Provence and Bellet appellations produce some of the most charming wines in France. A traditional Nice restaurant will feature a wine list that leans heavily on local rosés, reds from Bandol, and crisp whites from Cassis. If the list is dominated by international brands or Parisian imports, the restaurant may lack regional pride.
5. Watch the Crowd
The demographic of the dining room tells you everything you need to know. If you hear a significant amount of French being spoken by middle-aged and older patrons, you are likely in the right place. Traditional restaurants in Nice are often the gathering spots for local families on Sundays, and a multi-generational local crowd is the highest form of endorsement.
6. Beware of Aggressive Hosts
A true traditional establishment in Nice rarely needs to stand on the sidewalk and beg you to come inside. The best kitchens rely on their reputation and word of mouth. If a host is aggressively pushing a “tourist menu” with photos of the food, it is often a sign that the kitchen is prioritizing volume over quality.
Nice remains one of the few cities in Europe where the old ways of dining are not just preserved but celebrated with genuine pride. By choosing to sit down in a restaurant that values tradition, you are participating in a cultural exchange that has defined this coastal city for centuries. The slow pace, the honest flavors, and the unpretentious elegance of these establishments offer a welcome reprieve from the modern world.
As you wander the narrow, ochre-colored streets of the Old Town or gaze out over the Baie des Anges, let your appetite guide you to these tables. Here, the clinking of glasses and the aroma of simmering garlic and herbs will remind you why French cuisine remains the benchmark by which all others are measured. Bon appétit.
