Biarritz has a way of slowing you down in the best possible way. Once a whaling village and later a favorite retreat for European royalty, this Basque Coast town now moves to the rhythm of ocean swells and espresso machines. The surf culture is strong here, but so is the quiet pleasure of a slow morning with a buttery croissant and a view of the Atlantic.
Finding the right café is part of understanding the city’s dual personality. In the same afternoon, you can sip a flat white in a minimalist Scandi-inspired space, then wander ten minutes and settle into a Belle Époque tearoom that feels frozen in the 1920s. It is this contrast that makes the local coffee scene so rewarding to explore.
Most visitors gravitate toward the seafront, but the best addresses are often tucked one street back from the beach. That is where you will find the roasters, the pastry obsessives, and the neighborhood spots where the conversation drifts between French and Basque. A good café here is not just about the caffeine; it is about the atmosphere, the quality of the baked goods, and the time of day you choose to visit.
Morning light belongs to the bakeries serving café allongé alongside golden financiers. Midday calls for shaded terraces and sparkling water with a second coffee, while late afternoon is made for a decaf or a fresh mint tea after a long walk along the Côte des Basques. Each café has a moment when it truly shines.
Because Biarritz is compact, you can plan your day around coffee stops without wasting time in transit. The neighborhoods—from Les Halles to the lighthouse—are connected by short, scenic walks. This guide is designed to help you match the right café to your mood, whether you need a quiet place to work, a sunny terrace for people-watching, or the best gateau basque in town.
Below is a carefully curated list of the most distinctive and dependable cafés in Biarritz, based on quality of coffee, pastry selection, atmosphere, and consistency.

Stumbled on this place by chance, apparently they just opened. Had a really good iced matcha latte with coconut milk. Highly recommend!

I discovered this café yesterday on my way to the market, and it immediately caught my attention. The Lemon Cold Brew was my first choice — and it was so good that I came back again today!
This time, I tried the Latte with orange blossom and the chocolate & fleur de sel cookie, and they completely won me over. Everything here feels so delicate, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted, with such a wonderful attention to detail.
I’m absolutely delighted to have discovered this little gem and can’t wait to come back again. Highly recommend! 🤍

Was so good, we went back two days in a row. Everything we tried (coffee and cakes) were incredible! And the focaccia looks amazing although we didn’t try it. Also, the owners were so warm and friendly. You can tell a lot of care is put into everything. Can’t miss during your time in Biarritz.
Alexey Subach★★★★☆
The flat white was fine. The iced latte was weird - served in the same cup as flat white (not a transparent glass), no straw and the milk seemed whipped. The portion was also small and the ice melted quickly. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend iced latte from this place - maybe flat white is fine still
Nicolas Gauthier★★★★★
The focaccia is amazing and one of the best I ever ate. You cannot go in Biarritz and not go to Dimanche.

Amazing breakfast spot! We had the ricotta pancakes, and they were absolutely incredible. We also ordered eggs with halloumi, bacon and avocado, the Big Bae (toast with avocado, eggs and bacon), and a delicious carrot salad. The portions were generous, and everything was fresh and flavorful. The service was cheerful, friendly, and accommodating. Highly recommend this place!
M. M.★★★★☆
The only issue was the pancake—it felt a bit undercooked to me. The chef explained it was due to the ricotta in it. It’s not really my taste, but the rest of the food was good

I’ve visited their cafe in Lille a couple times so was pleased to hear that they opened up in Biarritz as well. Great place for breakfast and lunch, super friendly staff and the place is quite spacious so big chance of getting a table 🙂

The coffee is fantastic, and the matcha latte is made with good quality matcha. If you love tea, this place is an absolute must-visit as they offer a wide selection, including green tea, white tea, and oolong tea.
The egg sandwich is exceptionally delicious—wonderfully moist in texture with soft, fresh bread that isn't dry at all.
The atmosphere is comfortable and clean, with sunlight streaming through large glass windows, creating a wonderfully relaxing environment. It's a truly great spot. The staff are very patient, friendly, and helpful with explanations.

September 2024,
A small cafe with a small menu. Ideal for starting your day or a small lunch. Seems popular with locals (only saw French people). Coffee has a slight acidity, the home made granola (2 choices) is really good - small version available. A smoothie of the day, fresh soup. A small kantine (as they call it themselves) very good..
Kathleen Fournier★★★★★
The oat latte is truly excellent. Thank you to previous reviewers for saying so, I sought it out and I wasn’t disappointed. Medium roast, creamy beans perfectly ground. And decent oat milk. Tastes like Oatly.
Alice Yagolnitser★★★★★
Best juice place in Biarritz + healthy food options. The owner is super friendly and they have wi-fi so I could work on my laptop for a few hours there every day but the place gets busy at peak hours. Good coffee and freshly baked goodies (chocolate brownie cake is a must) + alternative milk options
Diana Augustin★★★★★
Cute little cafe that gets really busy especially during lunch time with only 4 small tables indoors and a little bench outside (take-away is absolutely worth it). We enjoyed a gazpacho, a homemade savoury muffin with a green salad, iced coffee and freshly pressed juice.
RADOLA Emilie★★★★★
Love this coffee shop, it’s one of the best places in Biarritz.
Healthy food + gluten free options.
The chocolate cake (fondant au chocolat) and almond & orange flower one (amande & fleur d’oranger) are amazing.

Has a nice pavement seating area with plenty of tables in the sunshine and lots of customers which shows the popularity! Waited a couple of minutes for a table but nothing terrible. Orders are taken promptly and delivered promptly too! Portions are a good size, nothing dramatically big (half the plate was salad leaves). We chose the pancakes with seasonal fruit and the crazy scrambled eggs. The bread is a very interesting choice, quite dark and almost like rye. I will say the pricing is on the high side but that's the tourist area of Biarritz I suppose.
Katie Floyd★★★☆☆
We chose to eat here as it had come up as a place that had gluten free options. Staff were friendly and although didn’t seem that confident/knowledgeable about gluten free options, we did find some options. We had some tasty smoothies and chose a chicken salad. The salad would have been great but was let down by some strangely textured chicken, which didn’t seem like it was cooked, even though it was.
Other food brought out looked really good and portion sizes were good.
Jason Willick★★★★★
Truly great brunch options. As an American who has lived in France for many years, this is a legit American brunch. Great pancakes, perfect bacon and good coffee. The tops!
Christina F★★★★☆
We had to wait about 5 mins for a table but it was worth it. We had brunch and the food, fruit & veg juices and coffee were all delicious. We shared a raspberry tart and it was yummy.
I would definitely come here again.
The staff were also friendly.

The Vietnamese noodles were YUM.. 🇻🇳
Absolutely lovely stuff with a wide range of health brunch & food options, great portion sizes and in a nice outside (and inside if you fancy) environment. 🥒🥬🫑🍅 mid level price wise but would say it is worth it!

Really cool and friendly staff! Great vibes, lowkey vibes. I had the weekly drink special which was a tiramisu latte and it was good. Didn’t try the food but all of the pastries and desserts looked good.

One of my favorite new lunch spots in Biarritz. The place is very cozy and the staff is exceptionally friendly, relaxed and attentive. There’s a changing daily plate as well as super tasty dishes on the lunch menu – each one more delicious than the next. Today I had the Ossobucco and it was awesome. What I really like here is that the cooking is honest and authentic, without too many crazy reinterpretations. The portions are huge and filling – and all at a very fair price. Thanks for that super cool food experience! I’ll definitely come back again.

Everything was absolutely delicious! We had an açaí bowl (€10), a matcha (€5), and a passion fruit smoothie (€6), and we loved every single item. The matcha was especially good, which isn’t always easy to find. The prices were very reasonable for the quality, and the value for money was excellent. The café also has a very cute and cosy atmosphere. We’ll most likely be back!

Amazing experience, i came here 3 times in the same day lol !!!! The best coffee for sureeee i had in Biarritz! Their Açaí smoothie is SOOOOOO GOOOD AND YUMMY and their iced coffee too 😋🤤!!! Found this lovely little café. Great Coffee. Healthy breakfast. We had yoghurt and granola bowl with fruit or açai with granola and fresh fruit. Really good. Hard to find somewhere that it isn’t just bread in Biarritz

Honestly the cutest cafe store in Biarritz, and the best coffee we've had by far. The owner Heloise shared her travel stories with us, and all of her tips for the area, we loved the vibe. Also, so many treasures to go through on her shelves, most of it handmade.
So so recommended.

We visited this lovely place, where the owner speaks both French and Spanish.
The coffee is fantastic! ☕️
They also offer plant-based milk, perfect for those with lactose intolerance. We tried a cappuccino with plant milk and a decaf espresso—both were delicious. Highly recommend!
The atmosphere is really great, and you can also buy coffee, tea, and herbal drinks to take home.
Very stylish place.

Possibly in my top 5 worst sandwiches in my life. Pretty certain the club was pre-made and put in the fridge. The lettuce and bread were both soggy even tho the bread looked toasted. The matcha I had was pretty good. The view is excellent. I would only come back for a matcha and the view/sun.

Very delicious meal
Service was good and quick
Beautiful view of the beach
Todd Gardner★☆☆☆☆
We ordered via the phone from the terrace and it took 25 minutes for a 3 drinks to arrive. And the app asked for a tip 🙁 We checked on the status with the staff a few times and they said it was normal. It seemed those that ordered through the waiters get their order quicker than via the app.
Marcel Mrose★★☆☆☆
I ordered a club sandwich which is a pretty understood dish, I mean it even has its own Wikipedia article. What I received after half an hour of waiting was something unrecognizable, without any side garnish such as fries, for 15 EUR. Normally I would have immediately voiced my concern, but it's virtually impossible to get hold of anyone in this place, they are much too understaffed. Now I also understand why you need to pay in advance. At least the view was great.
Ondřej Symerský★★☆☆☆
Great place and friendly service, but unfortunately the worst cocktails we’ve ever had, especially considering the €10–12 price tag for each one. We couldn’t even finish our drinks and decided to leave. I wouldn’t pay a penny for these cocktails.

The absolute best coffee shop in Biarritz. So happy we stumbled across this coffee shop gem. We stayed in Biarritz for 4 days and came here every single day. Look no further for excellent cappuccinos and the delightful yogurt bowls with a unique granola with red miso. The couple who own the shop are so gracious and you can tell they do everything with pleasure! Don’t sleep on the grilled cheese with caramelized onions. No notes 👌🏻

All pictures and reviews are old. They do not serve the nice looking food in the pictures, mainly just offer boiled eggs which come with cold bread and no butter or cutlery. Coffee is a mess all over dirty cup and soggy biscuit. Quiche comes cold or microwaved. Toasted sandwich only served cold and had just 3 thin slices of mozzarella. Lady behind counter had bad attitude. Worst breakfast we have had and a waste of 25€

Ok so as a guy from Melbourne I entered Biarritz with a high coffee bar. BUT after trying all the supposed best cafes in the city Im SHOCKED at how how continually dissapointed I've been. No style. Bad coffee. Terrible music. loud decor. Over priced. And now on the last day. Finally I find this cafe. A perfect fusion of style, product, form and function. These people CARE. In a way ive not experienced anywhere else in the city. Its great to see them popular. They well deserve it. Kudos
Chloe Noble★★★★★
Lovely little spot that I sat in for a few hours before my train to Paris. Great food and coffee. I had a slice of marble cake which was unbelievable - it's like they took a classic and elevated it. The vibe is really nice in here too. Lots of people just chilling, reading books, newspapers etc. Quite a few people doing some work on their laptops too. Felt relaxed but busy. Would recommend to all for a relaxed but buzzy cafe with great food.
Magdalena Zbrozek★★★★★

Solid little place for breakfast that’s slightly out of the way in Biarritz but has a great array of choices.

Wonderful café serving excellent coffee and lovely sweet treats (vegan-friendly too!). Was only in Biarritz for three days but made sure I went every day for the exceptional cinnamon rolls! Very friendly staff who are happy to support when your French is not so good! Highly recommend for anyone wanting a good coffee and a tasty pastry.

Small place, but so good! Lots of vegan option which was hard to find in Biarritz 😹
The people working were so kind and had smiles on their faces 😊
The chai has a lot of cinnamon! But was great! I also had the cinnamon roll- can’t tell it’s vegan! Must go for vegan people in Biarritz!
Raluca Simiuc★★★★★
This is THE specialty coffee place in Biaritz, great design & nice vibe, great single origin coffee - could be a great choice in any big city. I got a yummy homemade granola bowl with no sugar. Also pure matcha was really good.
Nicole Kramer★★★★★
Café Loky’s got great coffee in addition to its vibey aesthetic. Their espresso drinks are fabulous, as is their cold brew! I’d been craving a good cold brew during my trip to Europe since that’s my usual preference back in the states, and theirs is better than that of many coffee shops back home that advertise having a great cold brew! Highly recommend this spot for your morning coffee 🙂
David Kardanov★★★★★
Great coffee spot. Top service from the barista he was busy but took his time for each latte to make the art. Using the best coffee machine and coffee grinder that coffee taste out of this world.
Tips for Enjoying Biarritz’s Café Culture
A little local knowledge goes a long way when navigating the coffee scene here. These practical suggestions will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls and experience the city’s cafés the way a resident would.
1. Adjust your coffee vocabulary
If you order a “café” in Biarritz, you will receive an espresso. For a longer black coffee, ask for a café allongé. If you want milk, request a café crème or a noisette, which is an espresso with a touch of foam. Knowing these terms will save you from ordering mistakes at the counter.
2. Check the closing day before you walk
Many independent cafés in Biarritz close for one or two days per week, often Monday or Tuesday, especially outside the summer months. Always verify hours on the café’s website or social media before making a special trip. It is the most common disappointment for visitors.
3. Sit at the counter for faster service
If a café is busy and you do not need a full table, take a seat at the bar. Counter service is faster, you will often pay a slightly lower price, and you get a front-row view of the barista’s craft. It is also a natural way to start a conversation with the staff.
4. Carry a little cash for small orders
While most places accept cards, some of the smaller, older cafés and bakeries set a minimum for card payments. A five or ten euro note will make your life easier, especially if you are only ordering a single coffee and a pastry to go.
5. Time your visit around the surf schedule
Biarritz runs on tides and surf sessions. Cafés near the beach get a rush around 9 a.m., then again after 11 a.m. when surfers come in from the water. If you want a quiet table, aim for the lull between 10 a.m. and noon, or after 3 p.m.
6. Do not skip the pastry counter
In many of the best cafés, the coffee is excellent but the pastries are the real reason to visit. Look for local specialties like gateau basque, a dense, buttery cake filled with black cherry jam or pastry cream. Even a simple croissant can be exceptional when sourced from a dedicated local baker.
Biarritz rewards those who are willing to wander without a rigid schedule. The best café experience often comes from noticing a small terrace in the morning light, or following the smell of freshly ground beans down a narrow side street. Give yourself permission to stop twice a day—once for the coffee, and once for the moment.
As the ocean air cools in the evening, the cafés begin to close their shutters and the town shifts toward dinner. But the memory of a perfect coffee, taken slowly with a view of the Atlantic, stays with you long after you leave the Basque coast. That is the quiet magic of Biarritz, served one cup at a time.
