Perched between the rolling waves of the Atlantic and the foothills of the Pyrenees, Biarritz offers a unique vantage point that few coastal towns can rival. While the city is globally renowned for its surf breaks and imperial history, its culinary scene has evolved into a vibrant expression of Basque-French culture. Among the most coveted experiences for both locals and visitors is the simple act of dining or drinking above the bustling streets, where the sea breeze mingles with the aroma of fresh coffee.
The appeal of a rooftop terrace in Biarritz goes beyond the food and drink; it is about capturing the essence of the "Art de Vivre." From these elevated perches, you can watch surfers carve through the waves at the Grande Plage while the sun casts a golden hue over the historic lighthouse. It is a sensory experience that combines the visual drama of the coastline with the relaxed rhythm of the Basque coast.
However, not all terraces are created equal. Some offer panoramic ocean views, while others provide a more intimate, hidden-garden atmosphere tucked away from the main promenades. Knowing where to go for a sunset aperitif versus a quiet morning espresso can significantly impact your stay. This guide aims to curate the definitive list of elevated spaces that capture the true spirit of Biarritz.
We have evaluated these locations based on the quality of their beverages, the creativity of their cuisine, and the authenticity of their atmosphere. Whether you are looking for a sophisticated cocktail bar with panoramic views or a casual café to rest after a day of shopping in Les Halles, this list covers the spectrum. We prioritize venues that offer genuine hospitality and a strong sense of place rather than those simply trading on a view.
Biarritz is a town of distinct neighborhoods, from the vibrant Port des Pêcheurs to the chic avenues near the Hôtel du Palais. The best rooftops serve as observation decks for these micro-cultures, allowing you to see the town from a fresh perspective. As the day shifts from bright sunshine to the warm glow of evening, the atmosphere on these terraces transforms, offering a completely different vibe depending on the hour.
To help you navigate the scene, we have compiled a comprehensive list of the twelve best rooftop cafes and terraces in Biarritz. Each location offers something unique, ensuring that whether you are a solo traveler seeking inspiration or a couple looking for romance, you will find your perfect spot in the sky.

Really nice rooftop tapas place. We went to the higher of the two rooftops. The food and service and vibes were all really great. The kiwi daiquiri is can’t miss and the duck carpaccio was the standout food dish. We got 4 items for 2 people and it was a little too much food. I’d recommend 3 items. The cake was just alright and my espresso after dinner took like 10 min but other than that, great time.
Danny Estavillo★★★★★
The view at Olatua is unbelievable! That alone was worth a visit for a drink. We enjoyed their cocktails, wine and food. The portions were very generous, we actually ordered too much food for four people. The staff was incredibly kind and even went the extra mile since our French is not so good and accommodated with English. Our kids 9 & 11 enjoyed it and especially that you could peak over into the aquarium and occasionally see a seal! I highly recommend visiting Olatua!

Seems like a tourist trap because of its roof deck overlooking the rocher de la vierge but the food and drinks are top quality. The croquettes, carpaccio, and roasted carrots were all delicious. It is an ideal spot to relax.

Stunning views and a great vibe! Definitely recommend stopping by for a drink. Just a heads-up, it gets pretty windy up there.

I stopped here after spending a few hours at the aquarium and had a tea.
I would come back for food because the view and vibe is great, even on a cloudy rainy day. (Playlist is great)

The views from the terrace are fantastic. The service is fast, and the food is great - beef skewers are simply the best. There is a dedicated elevator from the beach level. Thank you for this experience.

Definitely worth the walk! Amazing views, drinks, food and people. The ceviche tacos were DELISH and the bartenders were all very nice. Arthur even made me a spicy margarita 😉 might end up going back again tonight!

Rooftop bar with stunning views of the ocean. Great selection of cocktails, both classic and signatures. From the croquette to the patatas bravas, everything we tried was on point. Arrive early to secure a table and stay to watch the sunset!

We ordered four cocktails and had to wait more than 40 minutes for them. Even after repeatedly asking, no one could tell us why our order was taking so long. In the end, we left without receiving our drinks. Very disappointing and unfortunately not recommended.

Great food. Seafood and Pork was great. Beautiful views. We will go back

Marvelous place for cocktails, elegant bites and an expansive view of the sea. The rooftop is more chic than the bar downstairs, but both are wonderful for a quick stop along your coastal walk or to while away the afternoon.

We have been coming here since we moved to France 7 months ago and we LOVE it. One of the best steaks in the area. Service is always lovely and helpful and we love the atmosphere too. Highly recommend

One of the jewels of Biarritz with an Amazing rooftop bar and sea view restaurant below.. Located above of the Galleries Lafayette. Serving wonderful cocktails, great French cuisine plus a great wine selection! The Partager steaks are a must if more than one person!
Atmosphere and choice of music is lovely yet calm for chatting.
Staff are courteous and multilingual. Emma was very welcoming at reception.
Suggest to start with a cocktail on rooftop before sunset! Will appreciate it!
Eric Feyfant★★★★☆
The food was decent, I will have hope for slightly better for the price. The service was good but clearly young people in training not on part with what the restaurant is trying to sell you. The decor is clearly reminiscent of the années folles, (20s) and it is very well done. On Friday they have 2 services and will kick you out at 9:30pm, which is ok if they tell you in advance when you book.
Joe Faddoul★★★★★
Excellent new spot in Biarritz! The location, decor and views are unique, and we didn’t expect the food to be that delightful, but all the platters were delicious!
The staff are very friendly!

The view is amazing!! The food is soooo good, i ordered a caesar salad and it was so yummy and filling 😋! The atmosphere is great, the deco is super pretty, great music and the workers are super sweet and kind ☺️. I think that the prices are very good for a restaurant / café that has SUCH a nice view !!! Amazing experience and i will 100% come back!!!

Loved the cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and friendly staff. Service was perfect, and the ocean view made it even better. Highly recommend for a relaxing break in Biarritz!
Nat Ciccone★★★★★
We went night exploring on our first night along the well lit beach and found everything here was chic, beautiful and calm, but this little beach bar called to us from the top of the cliffs and we walked down onto the old beach to discover a hidden gem. We arrived late (too late for food) but the atmosphere compelled us to stay and have cocktails. An excellent choice as it turned out. Highly recommend this beautiful spot 😊
Niklas Dominick★★☆☆☆
We ordered a decaf espresso and an orange juice. The juice was refreshing and nice, but the decaf espresso was almost tasteless and hardly drinkable—we definitely wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re looking for good coffee.
The service was friendly and accommodating. The waiter seemed a bit lost (maybe it was his first day), but the manager stepped in and made sure everything went smoothly.
The best part of the café is the view—it’s truly amazing. We sat outside, and while the cushions were comfortable, they could have been cleaner. We didn’t go inside, so we can’t comment on the interior design.
We didn’t try any food, and there was no Wi-Fi or power outlets available.
Overall, worth it for the view, but not for the coffee.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The location is absolutely amazing, the service was attentive and super friendly. The food was completely delicious, the best calamari I’ve ever had.

Great restaurant with one of the best views in the city. Perfect for lunch with a company. The food was delicious and service was fast. I tried gaspaccio (recommend) and risotto. Both are great and everyone in our comapany enjoyed their dishes.

The view alone is worth it, but the service and food are outstanding. The team were welcoming and helped us get the perfect table we wanted. The octopus was amazing and the desserts were outrageous. J'adore.

This is a dynamite place with gorgeous rooftop views and delicious food. Try the duck, the paella, the merlu, the tuna tartare , the guacamole and the cocktails. Nice service - we will be going again soon
Yakov Pakhomov★☆☆☆☆
The ocean view is stunning 🌊, the service is… fine. But the food? Unbelievable — and not in a good way. The chef’s “signature dish” was octopus, grilled on a dirty plancha with too much coal taste. 🤦♂️
If you come here, enjoy the view, maybe grab a drink… but for food — better look elsewhere. Bon appétit!

Great wee cafe/bar. Only €8 for an aperol spritz. Cheapest one I have had since arriving in Biarritz and it was a good one! Plenty seating.

If you followed me you know that i almost never have a negative review on places. 55 years of my life it’s the first time a business staff shouts on me! My family arrive at the bar 5 of us from Vietnam. The table is free and has already 3 chairs. I pulled 2 other chairs and before i had time to sit a waiter shout from inside his bar saying that i can not put chairs on the grass. I said ok then started to move the chairs back to their place. The man run towards me and shout again. Maybe this waiter doesn’t like Asians or his business is too good so it’s his way to chase 5 customers.
Vladimir Balaz★★★★☆
A kiosk bar with few, but overpriced drinks. You, of course, pay for location. Bur views are fantastic.

Good to see this year that the rudeness of the servers hasn’t lessened 😂😂 Lovely location , used to be brilliant under previous owners but all manners have now disappeared
To be fair though at least soft drinks and even water are served in proper glasses with lots of ice plus lemon

We love this place! It has the best view in Biarritz and the best vibe. It is a really cool place. You can sit outside by the car park and the staff will go to collect your glasses. It is the best spot to watch sunsets. People play petanque sometimes there too. Good vibe only.

Only had drinks. Service a little grumpy and pretty pricey...but, it is a lovely atmosphere and views of the Biarritz surf beach. So lovely especially given it is right next to a busy car park.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Biarritz Rooftops
To make the most of your elevated experience in Biarritz, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The town operates on a distinct rhythm dictated by the tides and the sun, and the best terraces often reflect this. Here are some expert recommendations to ensure you secure the best seat in the house and enjoy your time to the fullest.
Time Your Visit with the Sunset
The golden hour in Biarritz is a sacred time, and rooftop tables fill up faster than the waves roll in. If you are planning a visit for an evening aperitif, aim to arrive at least an hour before the sun is scheduled to set. This allows you to secure a prime position along the railing without feeling rushed. The transition of the sky from blue to orange over the Atlantic is the main event, and you want to be seated comfortably before it begins.
Understand the "Café" Culture
In France, a café is often a place to linger, not just a quick stop for caffeine. When you secure a rooftop table, do not expect the server to rush you. It is perfectly acceptable to order a single espresso or a glass of wine and sit for an hour or two. The price of your drink includes the real estate and the view. Relax, put your phone down, and embrace the slow pace that defines the Basque coast.
Dress for the Microclimate
Even on a hot summer day, the rooftop terraces of Biarritz are subject to sudden sea breezes. The weather can shift quickly from warm sun to a cool, salty mist, especially as the evening progresses. Always bring a light layer, such as a cashmere wrap or a denim jacket, even if the forecast looks clear. The wind can be particularly strong on terraces facing the Grande Plage, so securing your napkins and hats is a local pastime.
Check for Seasonal Closures
Biarritz is a seasonal town, and while it is busy year-round compared to smaller villages, many rooftop operations scale back during the winter months. Before you set your heart on a specific venue, check their social media or call ahead to confirm they are open. Some of the best terraces are attached to hotels that may close for renovations in November or January.
Respect the Local Etiquette
The Basque Country is proud of its identity, and a little effort goes a long way. Greeting your server with a friendly "Bonjour" (or "Kaixo" in Basque) before launching into English is standard practice and highly appreciated. Additionally, while rooftops are social spaces, they are generally not places for loud conference calls or speakerphone conversations. Keep the volume at a conversational level to maintain the serene atmosphere that everyone has come to enjoy.
Finding a moment of elevation in Biarritz allows you to connect with the landscape in a way that street level cannot offer. It provides a pause, a breath of fresh air, and a view that reminds you why this stretch of coastline has inspired artists and travelers for centuries.
Whether you choose a bustling bar overlooking the surf or a quiet terrace hidden in the hills, the experience is about more than just the menu. It is about the light, the salt in the air, and the feeling of being suspended between the mountains and the sea. Take your time, order something local, and enjoy the view from the top.
