15 Best Bars in Strasbourg

Strasbourg’s drinking scene is as layered as its history, moving effortlessly from timber-framed wine taverns to sleek, design-led cocktail lounges. While the city is rightly famous for its Alsatian winstubs and hearty cuisine, the bar culture here deserves equal attention. Whether you are winding down after a day of sightseeing in Petite France or looking for a late-night groove near the university, the city offers a surprising variety of atmospheres to match your mood.

Navigating the cobblestone lanes in search of the perfect pour can be overwhelming, especially with so many venues tucked away behind historic facades. Some of the best spots are easy to miss if you don’t know what you are looking for, often hidden in vaulted cellars or perched atop hotels with panoramic views. This guide cuts through the noise to deliver a curated list of the most compelling places to drink in the European capital.

The local drinking culture here places a heavy emphasis on regional identity, meaning you will find an exceptional selection of Alsace wines, craft beers, and eaux-de-vie alongside classic French cocktails. Unlike the fast-paced bar scenes of larger metropolises, Strasbourg favors a slower, more social approach to drinking. It is common to strike up a conversation with the table next to you, especially in the smaller, more intimate venues that define the city’s character.

From the historic cellars near the Cathedral to the trendy quayside terraces along the Ill river, each neighborhood offers a distinct flavor. Whether you are a connoisseur of natural wines, a fan of experimental mixology, or simply seeking a cozy corner for a local beer, you will find a venue that feels tailor-made for you. The key is knowing which doors to push open, as many of the best bars retain a discreet, unassuming exterior.

In curating this list, we have prioritized quality of drinks, atmosphere, and authenticity over fleeting trends. You will not find generic chains or tourist traps here; instead, you will discover places that locals actually frequent and recommend. Each entry has been selected for its ability to provide a memorable experience that reflects the true spirit of Strasbourg.

Below, you will find the 15 best bars in Strasbourg, carefully chosen to represent the diversity and excellence of the city’s beverage scene. Use this list as your starting point for an unforgettable evening out, whether you have one night or an entire week to explore.

Creative, delicious cocktails made custom to your likes- or any classics you know. There is no menu. Friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff. Limited seating, so you may be turned away at the door if they're full. But it's worth waiting around for!

Very cool and intimate cocktail bar / speakeasy. The cocktails they serve are very very high quality. These people know what they are doing, so let them suprise you and allow them to make a cocktail just for you. You won't regret it! We are not from France but we will definitely come back to strasbourg just for this cocktail bar.
Niko Aust★★★★★
We had an amazing night at the Code Bar. They have a dedicated drink menu for the winter season. But of course they can do all the classical cocktails as well. We had a very good penicillin and their seasonal cocktail with home made mandarin soda and gin. The team is super friendly and can advice on every drink. I will for sure come back when I'm in Strasbourg the next time.
Alexandria Merlos★★★★★
This bar has a great ambience—dimly lit with great music. The bartenders are not only skilled but also genuinely attentive, which makes the experience even better. The drink menu is concise yet creative, with thoughtful and well-crafted options. The space feels both comfortable and social, with a layout that encourages conversation. This was my first bar stop in Strasbourg, and it set the bar high. My cocktail was delicious, and I’ll definitely be coming back.

The whole bar was decorated in a full football setting. TVs everywhere. We went to watch a world cup game (knock out stage). First annoyance was, that they didn't put any audio on. Just music. Even so several tables were clearly following the game. But what really shocked me - they just turned off all the TVs and kicked us out. RIGHT BEFORE THE PENALTY SHOOTOUT! Without a warning. With a full bar focused on the end of this game. 10 minutes earlier than closing time. Drinks and food were fine, the table wasn't clean but mostly the staff got more and more unfriendly as the night progressed, and kicked us out before closing time in the middle of an important game... do not recommend.
Irina Sarbash★☆☆☆☆
Very disappointing experience. We were refused entry for no valid reason even though we were completely sober and behaving respectfully. Security claimed that cameras saw us drinking from plastic cups outside the venue, and apparently that was enough to deny us entry. The attitude of the staff was rude and unprofessional. It felt like the decision was completely arbitrary. Definitely not a welcoming place, and after this experience we would not come back.

We stopped there cus they were playing a football game and they served Tarte flambeé. We had a couple of drinks and the tarte flambeé with goat cheese that was spectacular, first we thought it was too much for two but it ended up being just enough. They have their menu in English which was helpful and the view from where we sat was also really pretty.
Benjamin Martinez★★★★★
The bests tarte flambée I’ve ever had! We visited the place, as we wanted to have tarte flambée, and it was the best decision to visit Exil’s. The service was very friendly and the environment was really comfortable to eat and have a nice chat. Would definitely visit it back when going to Strasbourg again!

Worst place in Strasbourg. So far. I had one of the worst nights in Strasbourg since I live here. We were with friends for the soccer match and we were using facial paint to support the french team 🇫🇷 The owner showed up and literally HIT the table to said that we have put some washable paint on one of their dishes in a very aggressive way in front of everyone SMASHING the table. So it was a very uncomfortable 😳 moment for everyone and some left the bar about his anger management issues. NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY OR SOMETHING. This won't happen in America 🇺🇸 FOOD: Terrible, they won't give you water they make you BUY water AMBIANCE: Air conditioning not working please avoid during summer Luckly everything is recorded. Visit them at your own risk

great drinks and very accomodating staff! they even made us a drink that wasn’t on the menu 🙂 and it has aircon in case you. re trying to find a place in very hot days

My visit to What The Fox restaurant and bar in Strasbourg was a delightful experience. The staff were incredibly friendly, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that added to the overall enjoyment of the evening. The ambience at What The Fox is very nice, providing a comfortable and inviting setting for a great meal. The combination of friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere contributed to a positive and memorable dining experience. The beer selection was good, offering a variety of choices to complement the tasty food. Whether you're a beer enthusiast or just looking to pair your meal with a refreshing drink, What The Fox has you covered. Speaking of the food, it was undeniably tasty. The flavors were well-balanced, and each dish showcased a commitment to quality ingredients and culinary skill. Overall, What The Fox is a fantastic choice for those looking for a friendly atmosphere, good beer, and tasty food in Strasbourg. It's a place worth visiting for a satisfying dining experience.

We really enjoyed the €4 pints during happy hour. Good atmosphere, friendly staff and great music.
Elene Kardava★★★★☆
The atmosphere of this bar is really cozy, vibey. Although a little crowded on weekends, good place to just talk, listen to the music and enjoy delicious cocktails. Client service is very good. Overally, spent a pretty good night here.
Medisa Sarvian★★☆☆☆
Everything was great i liked the place so much the music and everything was good BUT. The staff one guy particular ( he knows who he is ) he was so mean 😪 and irritating And in a simple bar why the shots should be 5 euros each ! They should definitely reconsider the price for the shots !
Ruffenach Jérémy★★★★★
The owner of the bar is clearly managing it properly. Always present in its bar (it has to be mentioned as he could stayed at home but no, he is investing time in its own business). Always kind as well as the staff. Good drinks and cocktails as well. I clearly recommend.

Love Barberousse! One of the best bars in Strasbourg! An underground pirate ship with vintage ambiance and some of the best drinks. Came here for Austrian friend’s bachelor’s party and was the highlight of the night!
Thomas M.★★★★☆
Definitely amongst Strasbourg's finest when it comes to a night out with the lads. I've stopped there several times as well just for one drink after dinner in a nearby restaurant. The great choice of flavored Rhums (2.50€ a glass). And for groups or crazy nights you can purchase the whole bottle (25€). They also serve beer and other alcoholic beverages. Very little seating so if you're not the standing type I can't exactly recommend it.
Andrew Hajewskyj★★★★★
Top little rum bar with amazing theming. The prices are reasonable for a inner city bar and they have a immense selections of rums. Worth a visit just to see the bars theming to be honest!
Jojo★★★★★
Cool bar with an amazing distinct concept. There are some Cocktails/longdrinks on the card, but the speciality is flavoured rum. My favourits where Melon, Peach, Cinammon, Hazelnut and Mango.
Preetham Reddy★★★★☆
The perfume is real good. Prices are a bit high. Ambience is extra ordinary. You can dance at the place where you are. There is a small dance platform. They need to change then music genre. Make it some popular songs. Most of the crowd don't know what songs are the playing. The Barberousse beer was good to taste..

Canapé Queer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) A true gem in Strasbourg’s queer nightlife! Canapé Queer is more than just a bar – it’s a welcoming, vibrant space full of warmth, laughter, and good energy. The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. Great vibes, cozy seating, and a diverse crowd that radiates openness and joy. Whether you’re here for a casual drink or to meet new people, this place has the magic of making everyone feel seen and celebrated. A must-visit for anyone who values authenticity, community, and a really good cocktail. 🌈🍸

with the permission of the bartender, I brought my Gemüsen Kebab from opposite street and I enjoyed here with a very nice IPA 👍 Nothing to say ❤️🙏

Amazing bar with a long beer menu and an insanely longer whiskey menu. Excellent charcuterie to snack on while you make your way through the list! (And I really appreciated that the bartenders spoke enough English that my broken French wasn’t a problem)
Mr. Penguin★★★★★
It's my favorite bar when visiting Strasbourg. My first visit was in 2016, and my last visit was in July 2023. Everything is the same. Friendly staff, that doesn't mind if you can't speak French. And a great selection of beer. This bar is on my top bar list. Cheers Guys!
TheMarant2★★★★☆
For a beer and spirits place, it does also offer nice coctails. I wish they had more of a variety, but they serve some of the classics. I got the tequila sunrise, €10, and it was a bit sweeter than what I would prefer, but overall, a good cocktail. The music playing is also really nice. I see this as a good place to hang out with friends, but it would be preferred by beer lovers.
Ertug Tahmaz★★★★★
Out of this world. Hundreds and hundreds of lovely whiskies, rums & other local spirits and a very honourable selection of draft beers. The atmosphere also is one of a kind, needless to say thanks to the fabulous selection of music and the hard work of the staff. Absolutely recommended.

What a phenomenal craft cocktail experience. We are sad that we haven’t discovered a place like this in Paris yet. The ambience is incredible with beautiful plants in a place that’s half medieval and half modern. They have an incredible range of craft cocktails that rival any we’ve had in United States and New York City.

I visited this place back on 7 December 2024, and am very late to reviewing it. That being said, I am trying to be better about giving local businesses positive reviews to encourage future business and visits from tourists or locals. I stopped in here while sightseeing, and while plenty of tables were open, I was put downstairs. I truly loved the selection of beers they offered, as I enjoy beer and trying most any variety. I will say, the bartender/server seemed overworked and while he was attentive and friendly when he was there, he was running around like crazy with little help and was not frequently behind the bar. Nothing I fault him with, but a bit of a bummer when I needed a refill. Still a place I would recommend.
Sid Somani★★★★★
A very cozy restaurant. The staff and their service were amazing. The cheesy nachos was amazing and very tasty. The staff helped with vegetarian options. The tart flambees were delicious. Everything we ordered was amazing. Had a great time.
Stanislav Kovalev★☆☆☆☆
Avoid this place. Especially if you're a foreigner and well-dressed. They didn't return any money to me, as they wrote in their reply. These are not only scammers, but liars too! I had a very disappointing experience at Académie de la Bière - Petite France. I initially paid 20 EUR via Apple Pay for a bill of 17.50 EUR, intentionally adding a tip. The amount was immediately debited from my account, which I can prove. However, due to a terminal error on their side, the transaction was not recognized by the staff. Despite clearly informing them that the payment had already gone through, I was repeatedly told—rather rudely—that I had to pay again. Under pressure, I was forced to pay a second time (17.50 EUR). No receipt or proof of the failed transaction was provided, with staff claiming there was no internet connection. As a result, I was charged twice for the same order. This is extremely unprofessional and unacceptable. The way the situation was handled, combined with poor communication and refusal to properly resolve the issue, left a very negative impression. I strongly advise caution when paying here, and I will be disputing the double charge with my bank
Florence★★★★☆

Fantastic place! Everything about it made me instantly at ease there. The service was very friendly, charming even, everyone we talked to spoke flawless english. We tried wine, cocktails, and snacks and it was all fantastic. The pub has this cool style where everything is rustic and cosy. You sit under an imitation of thatched roofs with awnings. Music was this mix of disco songs and 90’s and naughties pop, very much putting me in good mood. I highly recommend a visit. Thank you, Victor, for a nice evening!

The organization is beyond deplorable. To make a reservation, you supposedly have to send them a message. No response. They provide a phone number that apparently doesn't work. I think they should install air conditioning in the basement, because it's so cold you almost faint. In fact, a friend of mine passed out during a Shatta party. The manager acts like he's the manager of the Ritz, treating customers with disdain when they arrive without a reservation, since reservations aren't possible. It's a shame, I really liked the place.

We visited your bar about 4 or 5 times over our one week stay in Strasbourg. The reason we visited so many times was because of the very friendly helpful staff. The food was also fantastic (I loved the Caesar salad) the seats were very comfortable - for a middle aged couple with back problems! Every request we had - even my strange request to drink Ricard with “Sprite” instead of water 😂, was met with fun and laughter and excellent service! Particularly we found Owen to be very helpful, friendly and kind to us. He made us feel very welcome and like valued customers. He took time to translate the menu for us and explain the dishes which we really appreciated. In fact every member of staff were so helpful. Thanks again for a great time - I hope to return again one day. 5/5 stars!

Worst ever. I arrived at midnight on Friday night.(this place was advertised on Google open up to 4 AM. I informed the waitress I found them on Google and I was looking for a Tequila sunrise. The barman turned to the waitress and made sign to her of no. With some surprise (for a place who makes happy hour with Tequila sunrise, she said with uncertain intonation that they do not make it. I asked how that was possible given they are famous for their Tequila sunrise happy hour. She said it is because they are going to close (Lie), than she turned again to me asking if I wanted maybe a different drink. I answered her, no, that anyway they were going to close, right ? Really despicable this horrible behavior

Tips for Enjoying Strasbourg’s Bar Scene

To make the most of your evening out in Strasbourg, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The city’s drinking culture is deeply tied to its rhythms, seasons, and social customs. Understanding how to navigate the scene will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls and drink like a true Alsatian, ensuring every stop on your itinerary feels effortless and rewarding.

Embrace the Winstub Culture Early. Traditional Alsatian wine bars, or winstubs, often fill up quickly with locals during the early evening. Arrive around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM to secure a spot at a communal table. This is the best time to order a glass of Riesling or Gewurztraminer and soak in the atmosphere before the dinner rush begins.

Don’t Skip the Local Beer. While wine dominates the region, Alsace is also the historic home of major French breweries. Look for local craft breweries that are reviving small-batch production. Ask the bartender for a locally brewed pilsner or amber ale; it is often fresher and more interesting than imported options.

Know the Tram Schedule. Strasbourg has an excellent tram system, but service winds down before many bars close. If you are staying outside the city center, check the last tram time before you head out. Alternatively, the city is incredibly walkable, and most central bars are within a 15-minute stroll of each other.

Respect the Quiet Hours. Many bars in residential areas, particularly in Petite France, are required to close their terraces early or keep noise levels down. If you are planning a late-night party, head to the Krutenau district or the area around Place d’Austerlitz, where the vibe is livelier and venues stay open later.

Cash is Still King in Small Bars. While credit cards are widely accepted, some of the smaller, more traditional winstubs and cellar bars have minimum spend limits for card transactions. Carry a bit of cash to avoid awkwardness when settling up after a single glass of wine.

Try a Flammekueche with Your Drink. Drinking in Alsace is rarely done on an empty stomach. If a bar offers food, order a traditional flammekueche, a thin, crispy flatbread topped with crème fraîche, onions, and lardons. It is the perfect companion to a crisp white wine or a cold beer.

Strasbourg rewards the curious drinker who is willing to step off the main square and explore the side streets. The true magic of this city’s bar scene lies not in flashy signage or loud music, but in the warmth of the welcome and the quality of what is poured into your glass. Take your time, talk to the bartenders, and let the evening unfold naturally.

Whether you end your night in a centuries-old wine cellar or a modern rooftop bar overlooking the Cathedral, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for Alsatian hospitality. The only challenge is deciding which of these exceptional bars to visit first on your next trip back to this enchanting corner of France.
