Dijon may be world-famous for its mustard and medieval architecture, but the capital of Burgundy has quietly cultivated a vibrant and exciting culinary scene. While the city is traditionally known for hearty French staples like boeuf bourguignon and escargot, the demand for fresh, delicate flavors has led to a boom in Japanese cuisine. From traditional omakase counters to modern fusion bistros, the options for sushi have never been better.
Finding high-quality sushi in a landlocked city requires a keen eye for freshness and technique. Fortunately, Dijon’s restaurateurs have risen to the challenge, sourcing premium fish from European markets and importing specialty ingredients directly from Japan. Whether you are a local looking for a new weekly staple or a visitor seeking a break from heavy cream sauces, the city offers a diverse array of options to satisfy your craving.
This guide focuses on authenticity, ingredient quality, and the overall dining experience. We have analyzed menus, reviewed local reputations, and considered the atmosphere to bring you a curated list that goes beyond simple takeout boxes. You will find everything from intimate spots perfect for a date night to bustling venues ideal for a casual lunch with friends.

The concept was really cool and my husband and I had a great time here. The prices were great and the waiters spoke English well. The actual sushi was just ok, but that's to be expected from conveyor belt sushi. We would definitely come back if we're ever visiting Dijon again!

This restaurant is amazing. The staff is very family-friendly; they treat my son in a super cute way. The food is amazing, really, one of the best sushi I've had in my life. Highly recommended.

Côté Sushi exceeded my expectations. Every dish was prepared with care, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, and the presentation was elegant. The service was quick, professional, and welcoming. Whether you’re a sushi lover or trying it for the first time, this is a place worth visiting. Great food, great atmosphere, and excellent value for the quality. I highly recommend it and will definitely return!

Great place for a fusion sushi / sashimi experience. The atypical items were excellent, fresh and very tasty (tuna taco!!) whereas the more traditional rolls seemed more commonplace. Recommend to go with the exotic. Sake is served cold only.

Entre, plat and dessert, entire meal was excellent. I tried their crispy saumon for entre, platueau de mois and mochi for dessert. Their fish was fresh! Enthusiastic hospitality and environment.
One of the best sushi places to try for summer.

The salmon was very tasty ! Some of the best I’ve ever had.

Nicely located around the covered market in the center of Diji The realization is somehow not so great. My Makis came with dried rice. The price are a bit high for what you get. Expect quantity over quality. The restaurant also added a tip on the payment machine, which is annoying. Service is supposed to be included in France.

Awesome food! I have visited this restaurant 2 times and I sure am coming back for more!
they have authentic Japanese cuisine, I love the karaage (although I buy another type of chicken tempura to try on) but I was there with some friends and they ordered karaage which was really nice.
Just one thing, you have to reserve the place in advance, it gets fully booked quite often 🙂

What a great experience!!!! It’s been a Long time i’ve been looking for an Izakaya restaurant. It’s little piece of Tokyo. The choice of the food is great from sushis to sashimis yakitori etc.. choice of the drinks real Japanese a recommande the sake yuzu.
Service is nice busy but well organized. I’m happy to find this kind of restaurants.
I will comeback for sure!!

We made reservations cuz otherwise they seemed to be super full. They were also closed on Monday although the page says open.
The staff were great, tried their best to speak English and that was really appreciated.
Drinks were good as well, we missed having the sake though which was recommended.
For the food, we recommend the shashimi, it was delicious and very very fresh. The aubergine starter DengRaku was super delicious and one of my favorite dishes. The salmon teriyaki is also not to be missed!!
We recommend 8/10!

On our way back home we had a stop over in Dijon arrived around 21:00. Looking for a place to eat found Akatsuku still open till 23:00 while other restaurants were closing. What a lucky person I am, this is by far one of the best Japanese restaurants I have visit till now. The food prepared with such delicate handling, the combination of herbs & spices all in perfection!
Obviously a family restaurant all family working together, you feel a warm welcome and hospitality in a cosy Japanese style restaurant( no worry you sit on a chair but you eat with chop sticks!)
For travellers to or around Dijon this is really a place to visit. Prices are friendly.

The food tastes authentic and homemade. Delicious! The portions are generous, and everything is neatly prepared. Just a heads-up, the fried fish is actually salmon. I was expecting white fish, so I was a bit surprised, but it was still good. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal!

Descent food, but would be nice to have more seasonal and more defined flavors. All our meals were “okey, but nothing special”. We had tonkatsu, ramen, “gyozas” and japanese pancake.
The place was super busy when we were there so the service was also lengthy, but the staff was doing their best to catch up and limit the waiting time, this is really appreciated!

For our first day in Dijon we were looking for a good Japanese restaurant and we are glad we found the restaurant Aki: Not only was the service good but the food was amazing - especially, the Gyudon was an absolute treat! Also, the atmosphere was nice, especially downstairs in the cellar with the stone walls.
If you're looking for great Japanese food in Dijon, this should be the first place to go! ☺️

We had a fantastic meal here! We started with a fresh and flavorful selection of seaweed, edamame, cabbage, miso, and ginger, followed by beautifully prepared sushi, udon noodles with tofu, and crispy deep-fried prawns. Having eaten a lot of sushi before, we can say this was authentic, delicious, and excellent value for money — the whole meal, including a karaf of wine, came to around €60. Service was warm and attentive, and we’ll definitely be back in the next few days. Highly recommended!

We went on our 1 day Dijon stay to this restaurant and had a great experience.
It was quite packed, but we were lucky and got a seat without reservation.
The waitress was really friendly and helped us in our ordering process since we didn't speak french.
The sushi and ramen we ordered were really delicious. Also, you can't go wrong with Asahi beer 😉
If you are in the area, and its not full, I can definitely recommend this place!

5 stars because the vegan sushi was surprisingly good, they have a lot of unexpected flavour combinations. Like tapenade, dijon mayonaise and basil. One roll was like a spring roll with mint! It surprised us and we really liked it. There is sweet and savoury soy sauce, very well 🫶🏼🫶🏼 Ramen also very good and versatile ingredients, loved the oignons. I recommend for drinks the mangojo. Our host the gentleman and the chef in kitchen working that night ran their asses off, but it really made for a comforting meal. Thanks Samouraï!

We just visited this place and we had a wonderful dinner. Situated in the heart of Dijon this is a real gem for all the sushi lovers. The rolls were so fresh and so tasty that we were sorry that we have just one stomach. The place was opened recently and for sure will go in the heart of many others. The staff was really happy to have us as a guest and also they speak english.

Had a great time! Went for dinner, and we ordered one of the big rolls, some maki and the sushi set. All of it was fresh and well prepared, lots of creative flavours (in the big roll mostly). The dessert (black sesame mochi with red bean paste) was fantastic too, although I would have loved another sauce (or a bit of icecream) with it instead of whipped cream (that was probably industrial).
Price-wise, it’s slightly on the higher end. Other than that, would recommend! The atmosphere is more tailored to friends or family gatherings than dates, but they have a few seats outside too when the weather is nice.
And very minor remark, but I’d love to see diet beverages added to the menu next time I visit!

Awful. Worst Japanese food I’ve ever eaten. Avoid salmon chirashi - fish was slimy and not fresh. Chicken katsu was cold and mushy and the sauce was not katsu sauce. Only the seaweed was alright.

Had a sit down area, waiter was patient, spoke good english and friendly.
Sashimi fresh, food nice, not mind blowing but still really nice. €13 for 15 pieces salmon.
Miso soup big but bit too salty. Algae yummy but warning it is sweet if you don't like that kind of thing.
Smells of fish when you go in but that is with all the chains unfortunately.

Fast food sushi chain in good central Dijon location with the bright overlit decor but a good varied menu. Doesn't serve alcohol. Sadly, the quality of food was disappointingly bland, a little dry and only a notch above fresh supermarket sushi. A better local option is "Sushi Shop" (also a chain).

The TASTE…
Sushi: average
Tempura: good
Beef plates: Michelin style. But tasty. (Side dishes I didn’t like. Salad, rice…)
Dessert: ok
I think Gastronomy in Lyon and Dijon highly over rated!

What I received was not what I was shown. The restaurant photos were generated by AI. The food here had nothing to do with sushi.
In May, I ordered sushi that looked like it was pictured. I was hungry and full of anticipation. What arrived was completely different: instead of 10 pieces as shown in the picture, there were only 7. The salmon? About 25% of what the photo showed. The rice paper? Completely missing. And the salmon smelled sour – I couldn't eat it! The chicken dish? According to the photo, it was 50% chicken and 50% noodles in the box – what I received was 30% meat and 70% noodles.
I contacted the restaurant about my review. The response was as cheeky as it was telling: "We use AI-generated images."
No apology.
No offer of compensation.
No "We'll change that." Absolutely nothing.
... So they openly admit to using images that have nothing to do with the actual product – and see absolutely no problem with it.
The AI-generated images are still on Uber Eats, and they are ALL AI-generated.
This isn't an oversight. It's a deliberate decision: lure customers with misleading photos, deliver less than promised, and when someone complains, shrug and point to "AI images."
Anyone ordering here should know:
What you see is not what you get. And the restaurant knows this – and isn't changing it.

Tips for Choosing the Best Sushi in Dijon
Navigating a sushi menu in a foreign country can be tricky, especially when you are looking for authenticity. To ensure you get the best value and the freshest fish, it helps to know what to look for before you sit down. These practical tips will help you order like a local connoisseur and avoid common disappointments.
Check the Rice Temperature and Texture: Great sushi is as much about the rice as it is about the fish. The rice should be served slightly warm or at room temperature, never cold from a refrigerator. Look for grains that are distinct but sticky enough to hold together; if the rice is mushy or hard, the chef has not mastered the fundamentals.
Prioritize Seasonal Specials: Instead of defaulting to the standard salmon and tuna combo, ask about the "suggestions du moment" or seasonal specials. In France, chefs often receive limited quantities of specialty fish like kinmedai (golden eye snapper) or uni (sea urchin). Ordering these ensures you are getting the freshest product available that day.
Look for Fresh Wasabi: While most mid-range restaurants use powdered wasabi reconstituted with water, high-end spots in Dijon are increasingly grating fresh wasabi root. If you see a pale green, slightly textured paste rather than a smooth neon green mound, you are in a restaurant that cares deeply about quality.
Don’t Fear the French Fusion: Dijon is the capital of Burgundy, and some of the best sushi spots incorporate local ingredients. Do not dismiss a roll simply because it contains Dijon mustard cream or Burgundy truffle. These fusion elements often highlight the chef’s creativity and connect the Japanese technique to the local terroir.
Observe the Fish Display: If you are dining in, take a quick look at the sushi counter. The fish should look glossy and vibrant, never dry or dull. A clean, organized counter with no fishy smell is a strong indicator of good hygiene practices and proper storage temperatures.
The sushi scene in Dijon continues to evolve, offering a delightful contrast to the region’s traditional gastronomy. Whether you are stopping in for a quick bento box or settling in for a multi-course tasting menu, the city’s dedication to quality ingredients ensures a memorable meal. The blend of Japanese precision with French hospitality creates a dining experience that is uniquely Dijon.
We hope this guide helps you discover a new favorite spot or validates an old standby. As with any culinary adventure, the best approach is to explore with an open mind and an empty stomach. Bon appétit, or as they say in Japan, itadakimasu.
