12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Dijon

Dijon may be world-famous for its mustard and Burgundian wine, but the city’s culinary landscape extends far beyond boeuf bourguignon and coq au vin. Over the last decade, the historic capital of the Côte-d’Or has witnessed a quiet gastronomic revolution, welcoming a wave of international cuisines that challenge the traditional French bistro monopoly. Among these, Japanese food has carved out a particularly respected niche, offering locals and visitors a delicate balance of precision, freshness, and umami.

Whether you are a student navigating the vibrant streets near the Université de Bourgogne or a traveler taking a break from the Palace of the Dukes, finding a satisfying bowl of ramen or a perfectly sliced sashimi platter is easier than you might think. The city’s Japanese dining scene ranges from high-end omakase experiences to cozy, family-run noodle shops that feel like a slice of Tokyo. The common denominator across the best establishments is a deep respect for ingredients, a trait that resonates strongly with the Burgundian ethos of terroir.

However, the abundance of options can make choosing the right spot a bit overwhelming, especially if you are craving authenticity rather than a generic fusion menu. Some restaurants excel in warm, comforting dishes like katsu curry and udon, while others focus strictly on the artistry of raw fish and rice. Understanding the subtle differences between an izakaya, a ramen-ya, and a traditional sushi bar will significantly enhance your dining experience.

To compile this guide, we evaluated kitchens based on the quality of their rice, the sourcing of their fish, the depth of their broths, and the overall atmosphere. We looked for places that avoid excessive cream cheese and sugary sauces, instead championing the clean, nuanced flavors that define true Japanese cooking. We also considered value for money, ensuring that you can enjoy a high-quality meal without necessarily breaking the bank.

Dijon’s compact city center means you are never too far from a great meal, but reservations are highly recommended for dinner, particularly on weekends. Many of these establishments are small, independent operations where the chef is also the owner, meaning seating is limited and the pace is intentionally relaxed. This is dining meant to be savored, not rushed.

Below, you will find a curated list of the twelve best Japanese restaurants in Dijon, each offering a unique take on this beloved cuisine. Whether you are a purist looking for Edo-style sushi or a comfort-food lover in search of the richest tonkotsu broth, this guide has you covered.

Awesome food! I have visited this restaurant 2 times and I sure am coming back for more! they have authentic Japanese cuisine, I love the karaage (although I buy another type of chicken tempura to try on) but I was there with some friends and they ordered karaage which was really nice. Just one thing, you have to reserve the place in advance, it gets fully booked quite often 🙂

Delicious quality food with a very nice service. Loved this restaurant! Definitely recommend it and definitely coming back!

What a great experience!!!! It’s been a Long time i’ve been looking for an Izakaya restaurant. It’s little piece of Tokyo. The choice of the food is great from sushis to sashimis yakitori etc.. choice of the drinks real Japanese a recommande the sake yuzu. Service is nice busy but well organized. I’m happy to find this kind of restaurants. I will comeback for sure!!

We made reservations cuz otherwise they seemed to be super full. They were also closed on Monday although the page says open. The staff were great, tried their best to speak English and that was really appreciated. Drinks were good as well, we missed having the sake though which was recommended. For the food, we recommend the shashimi, it was delicious and very very fresh. The aubergine starter DengRaku was super delicious and one of my favorite dishes. The salmon teriyaki is also not to be missed!! We recommend 8/10!

On our way back home we had a stop over in Dijon arrived around 21:00. Looking for a place to eat found Akatsuku still open till 23:00 while other restaurants were closing. What a lucky person I am, this is by far one of the best Japanese restaurants I have visit till now. The food prepared with such delicate handling, the combination of herbs & spices all in perfection! Obviously a family restaurant all family working together, you feel a warm welcome and hospitality in a cosy Japanese style restaurant( no worry you sit on a chair but you eat with chop sticks!) For travellers to or around Dijon this is really a place to visit. Prices are friendly.

The concept was really cool and my husband and I had a great time here. The prices were great and the waiters spoke English well. The actual sushi was just ok, but that's to be expected from conveyor belt sushi. We would definitely come back if we're ever visiting Dijon again!

I was craving something Japanese 2 weeks into my European trip and found this little gem. Authentic and very attentive service, food was simple yet prepared with great care and delicious. The seasonal white asparagus and chicken entree was absolutely delicious. If you’re after authentic Japanese in Dijon this is a must.

Good Japanese food. The menus are great value! Attentive and friendly service.

Very nice little restaurant with really good food. Besides the traditional Japanese food the Japanese Chef created some nice fusion food dishes, bringing the best from Japanese and French cuisine together. Also very friendly service and nice selection of wine and saké

Well. We have picked this place due to its top rating. First thing to share is extreme waiting time! İt was incredible. Although the restaurant is quite small, not only us, all restaurant have waited.. I think it is the michelin style… only one lady in service but she is doing rally her best! The TASTE… Sushi: average Tempura: good Beef plates: Michelin style. But tasty. (Side dishes I didn’t like. Salad, rice…) Dessert: ok I think Gastronomy in Lyon and Dijon highly over rated! Menu is mis leading…

The food tastes authentic and homemade. Delicious! The portions are generous, and everything is neatly prepared. Just a heads-up, the fried fish is actually salmon. I was expecting white fish, so I was a bit surprised, but it was still good. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal!
Mayya Brouwer★★★★★
I loved the ginger they serve here. It looks handmade and taste better than anywhere. Coming to France I have also got a chance to drink local wine, since they serve it at Aki. Win-win.
Alicja Smuga★★★☆☆
Descent food, but would be nice to have more seasonal and more defined flavors. All our meals were “okey, but nothing special”. We had tonkatsu, ramen, “gyozas” and japanese pancake. The place was super busy when we were there so the service was also lengthy, but the staff was doing their best to catch up and limit the waiting time, this is really appreciated!
Sir Thecos★★★★★
For our first day in Dijon we were looking for a good Japanese restaurant and we are glad we found the restaurant Aki: Not only was the service good but the food was amazing - especially, the Gyudon was an absolute treat! Also, the atmosphere was nice, especially downstairs in the cellar with the stone walls. If you're looking for great Japanese food in Dijon, this should be the first place to go! ☺️
L Kilbride★★★★★
We had a fantastic meal here! We started with a fresh and flavorful selection of seaweed, edamame, cabbage, miso, and ginger, followed by beautifully prepared sushi, udon noodles with tofu, and crispy deep-fried prawns. Having eaten a lot of sushi before, we can say this was authentic, delicious, and excellent value for money — the whole meal, including a karaf of wine, came to around €60. Service was warm and attentive, and we’ll definitely be back in the next few days. Highly recommended!

Incredibly tasty chicken, affordable pricing and efficient service. You can't ask much more from a karaage joint. It perfected its concept.

Ironically the best food I have had in Dijon (and France actually) so far was here. No frills, delicious and extremely fresh. The lady working is meticulous in her preparation and it was so simple but so good. Can’t wait to eat here again.

Excellent and authentic Japanese fried chicken. It’s super tasty. I visit whenever I am in Dijon
CA★★☆☆☆
I doubt anyone who is familiar with Japanese cuisine would recognize this as karaage. They might as well call these things “chicken meatballs” - because of how far away it is from being authentic.

A small restaurant in the city center, close to the tram, and with such a great atmosphere! The premises are truly beautiful and immediately immerse you in the theme. The waitress is friendly and welcoming, but above all, the food is delicious. The menu isn't particularly extensive, but the variety of flavors ensures there's something for everyone.

Tuesday evening, alone. Empty restaurant. The menu was short but enticing, with Japanese and Korean options. In the end, I went for a mix of a Karaage and a Korean Crousty, finishing with a chocolate mochi. Special mention for the truly delicious Karaage. The service was pleasant and the prices reasonable.

A visit with friends to discover this new Japanese curry restaurant. The karaage, the prawn curry (perfectly spiced), and the spicy tuna mayo onigiri are excellent!! The decor is super cool and original with manga. Top-notch service! Generous portions and very reasonable prices. We'll be back 🙂

Andreas Kube★☆☆☆☆
What I received was not what I was shown. The restaurant photos were generated by AI. The food here had nothing to do with sushi. In May, I ordered sushi that looked like it was pictured. I was hungry and full of anticipation. What arrived was completely different: instead of 10 pieces as shown in the picture, there were only 7. The salmon? About 25% of what the photo showed. The rice paper? Completely missing. And the salmon smelled sour – I couldn't eat it! The chicken dish? According to the photo, it was 50% chicken and 50% noodles in the box – what I received was 30% meat and 70% noodles. I contacted the restaurant about my review. The response was as cheeky as it was telling: "We use AI-generated images." No apology. No offer of compensation. No "We'll change that." Absolutely nothing. ... So they openly admit to using images that have nothing to do with the actual product – and see absolutely no problem with it. The AI-generated images are still on Uber Eats, and they are ALL AI-generated. This isn't an oversight. It's a deliberate decision: lure customers with misleading photos, deliver less than promised, and when someone complains, shrug and point to "AI images." Anyone ordering here should know: What you see is not what you get. And the restaurant knows this – and isn't changing it.
Denis Coudert★★★★★

Absolutely delightful experience. One of the best meals we’ve ever had. The combinations of flavors, textures and colors are sublime. The staff and service are exceptional and the entire evening is wrapped in a wonderfully calm and serene environment. The chef brings the Japanese and French culinary traditions seamlessly.

We had a very enjoyable experience at Origine. The food and service was outstanding. I tried the 5 course lunch, and it was a gastronomic adventure. Thank you to the staff and chef for a memorable meal. Highlights for me were the amuse components (especially the escargot), the trout wellington (wow!), the canard, and the fraise & framboise dessert. Everything was exceptional, but those dishes were 11/10. I will certainly return.
Best Foodie★★★★☆
Most of the essences here are really awesome and fantastic. Staffs are really warm and the environment has really relaxing design and elegant vibes. Those starters are elaborately made, which makes you expect for the next dish. However, the meat in the main course might be the worst thing here … Among most of the Michelin-starred restaurants in France, fancy starters and beautiful desserts are common, but great meat is really rare. Sadly, this chef doesn’t nail it. The meat is not cooked well, so it’s really tasteless, stale and a bit sour. I think most of Michelin chefs I tried aren’t good at making those meat become gourmet, and this one also. You should at least try by yourself first before serving guests. All of those sides are so great and wonderful, but the main character- meat is so so so disappointing. When you chew more, the sadder you feel. I feel so sorry for this animal sacrificing for nothing. The dessert is their highlight, especially when they mixed saffron with honey to create unique umami for the topping on ice cream. The tart is not very well balanced because the grapefruit and its sauce are way too bitter. It’s a bit annoying and disturbing when you are savoring it. The dough of the tart is a bit stale but still mildly crunchy. It’s overall great value for €49 euros. Nevertheless they don’t really care about how bad you feel about the main cuisine, which is a bit pitiful. Wishing they would improve one day, and that’s the moment I would visit again.
Yara★★★★★
The place is very unique with a combination of French charm and Japanese elegance. They also have a kids menu which is rare for Michelin starred venues, a perfect introduction for young gourmands 🙂
Henrietta Naish★★★★★
A lovely evening. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful and the food delicious. Amuse bouches and palate cleansers interesting and well executed. Had the vegetarian menu which was far more imaginative than most and was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the artichoke. Puddings were to die for (stand out was a chiffon biscuit so thin you could see through it). Petits fours were a triumph. My daughter and I much appreciated the efforts of all the staff to speak English (which they did to a high standard) as our French is somewhat faltering. She was especially pleased that her birthday was celebrated but in an understated and non embarrassing way. It was an especial pleasure to be able to chat to M.Uchimuro and congratulate him on his cooking and imagination

Bonne continuation.

Tips for Choosing the Right Japanese Restaurant in Dijon

Selecting the perfect spot involves more than just scrolling through photos; it requires a bit of know-how to distinguish a truly authentic experience from a tourist trap. The French dining scene has a high standard for quality, but Japanese cuisine requires a specific technical skill set that not all kitchens possess. Here are a few essential tips to help you navigate the local scene and ensure you get the most out of your meal.

Check the Rice Quality
In Japanese cuisine, sushi is defined by its rice, not just the fish. A great restaurant will serve rice that is slightly warm, well-seasoned with rice vinegar, and holds together without being mushy. If the rice is cold, hard, or bland, the sushi will fail regardless of how fresh the fish is.

Look for Specialized Menus
Be wary of restaurants that try to do everything—sushi, ramen, wok, and Thai curry—all on one menu. The best Japanese spots in Dijon tend to specialize. If you want ramen, go to a place that focuses on noodles and broth. If you want nigiri, choose a restaurant where the chef is dedicated to the art of sushi.

Ask About the Fish Sourcing
Burgundy is landlocked, so the fish must travel. The top restaurants in Dijon are transparent about their supply chains, often importing from Rungis Market in Paris or directly from the Atlantic. Do not hesitate to ask the staff what the catch of the day is and where it came from; a knowledgeable answer is a sign of quality.

Respect the "Omakase" Option
If you are sitting at the counter of a high-end sushi bar, consider asking for "omakase" (chef’s choice). This allows the chef to serve you the freshest items of the day in the order they are meant to be eaten. It is the best way to experience the chef’s true skill and often includes items not listed on the standard menu.

Consider the Timing
Many authentic Japanese restaurants in Dijon have limited lunch services and close between lunch and dinner. To avoid a rushed meal or a locked door, check the operating hours carefully. Dining later in the evening, after 8:00 PM, usually offers a more relaxed atmosphere, but booking ahead is essential.

Dijon’s embrace of Japanese cuisine is a testament to the city’s evolving palate and its appreciation for culinary craftsmanship. While the region will always be synonymous with rich Burgundian sauces and fine wine, the availability of delicate miso soup and fresh wasabi adds a welcome layer of diversity to the local food scene.

As you explore these restaurants, remember that the best experiences often come from a sense of adventure. Do not be afraid to order something unfamiliar, whether it is a plate of fermented soybeans or a cut of fish you have never tried. It is in these moments of discovery that you will find the true heart of Japanese cooking thriving in the capital of Burgundy.
