Bayeux is a town that wears its history with grace. While the world knows it for the magnificent medieval tapestry and the echoes of 1066, the city offers a vibrant contemporary culture that thrives after the sun goes down. Beyond the cobblestone streets and the shadow of the cathedral, you will find a surprisingly diverse and welcoming nightlife scene that caters to both the local Norman crowd and curious travelers.
Whether you are looking to sip a crisp local cider, sample a flight of Calvados, or enjoy a perfectly pulled pint of Belgian beer, Bayeux has a venue for you. The bar culture here is unpretentious and warm, reflecting the genuine hospitality of the region. You won’t find massive, impersonal nightclubs dominating the scene; instead, you’ll discover intimate wine caves, lively brasseries, and cozy pubs where conversation flows as freely as the drinks.
Navigating the drinking scene in a historic town can be tricky if you don’t know where the locals go. Many of the best establishments are tucked away on side streets or hidden behind historic timber-framed facades. To truly experience the city like a resident, you need to move beyond the tourist menus posted on the main drag and explore the authentic haunts that define the local social calendar.
This guide is designed to help you do exactly that. We have curated a list of venues that offer exceptional atmosphere, quality beverages, and that distinct Norman charm. From the perfect spot for an afternoon aperitif to a late-night destination with a buzzing atmosphere, this list covers the full spectrum of Bayeux’s drinking culture.
Whether you are a history buff resting your feet after touring the museums, or a foodie looking for the perfect digestif to end a heavy meal, you will find your niche here. The local bar scene is compact enough to explore on foot, making a pub crawl an excellent way to see the city under the soft glow of the street lamps.
Without further ado, here are the venues that consistently deliver the best experiences for a drink in this beautiful corner of Normandy.

Great bar, off of the main street. Feels like a locals bar or a bar for those that know!
Good selection of beers, reasonably priced. Friendly staff. Will visit again.

My second time in Bayeux from Miami and I came back to this pub and it’s just like last year , great customer service, very good pizza and drinks. The atmosphere is amazing and they always show soccer games from the Champions league and Europa league. Cheers 🍻

Good place for a beer and a snack, beer price is on par for the area as is the food. Open early compared to some places and choice of draught beer is quite unique for France in my experience. English speaking staff which is useful if your french isn't too strong.

Pretty great and atmospheric bar, with occasional live music performances. Good beer taps. Pretty crowded, as there are not many straight bars in town.

Excellent place. Very welcoming unlike anothe restaurant we went and were left standing there without greeting us. Anyway, food was great and good drinks. Reasonable prices. I'm glad we bumped into this place. Highly recommend.

We visited while in Bayeux searching for a wine bar. We specifically wanted wine tasting, but the tapas and boards here intrigued us. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend a visit. I appreciate the experience. We ordered some wine and the Norman mixed board. Some hits and misses for us with the meats. The cheeses were on point and the board was served with bread and butter. I capped the evening with a "French coffee" which was strong and sweet. Happy travels!
Ric Rini★★★★★
Stopped in for some cocktails and were surprisingly pleased at how well the cocktails were crafted. Not only do they have a pretty expansive list of crafted cocktails, but also a very well populated wine list that should satisfy the pallet of many .
They have great small plates as well to satisfy your hunger. We had the salmon plate and it was exquisitely good exceeded our expectations .
Service was friendly, accommodating, quick and helpful regarding the menu items.

Great location on the market place in Bayeux with outdoor seating on a terrace overlooking the square. Good service and nice ambience. HOWEVER- we had two kir royales and one beer and were charged an astonishing €38. No food. Having been impressed thus far by the prices in the bars and restaurants of Bayeux, this seemed outrageously overpriced. Be careful.
Plaxs★☆☆☆☆
Although the Atmosphere and Service was pretty good, the food was absolutely atrocious. We paid 125€ for 8 Cokes, 4 Fries and 3 dishes. We didn’t finish a single one and all felt like we were about to throw up from eating barely even the half of the dishes served. My brother threw up afterwards and even my father who has an Iron stomach felt like throwing up. It felt like we got a food poisoning. The Fries were barely even done, had bad seasoning and were black as if drenched in motor oil. If there was a way to give 0 Stars, I would.

€9.50 for a pint of Guinness where he scooped half out with a knife, changed the keg and filled the rest with the new keg. This couldn’t be further from an Irish bar and the big guy behind the bar shouldn’t be allowed to serve anyone. The lady was pleasant at least

After a couple of days in Bayeux, we learned if you want to go to a good place (or maybe just pick where you want to go) you have to start early or make reservations. We ended up here because it the first place we found after being 0/8 strolling down the street. The beer and cider was good, cash only and if you want to eat, visit one of the to go spots and bring it back: not ideal after a day of exploring. Relaxing outside was lovely. the pizza menu is for a place 2 doors down.

Great place for a beer and cider on tap. The couple who own the bar are friendly, helpful, and down to earth. They spent time talking with us English speaking Canadians and also gave great suggestions for tours. It was the first place we stopped when we got to Bayeux and we would definitely go back. I cannot speak about the food because we only had an afternoon drink.

We called in for a pint after walking all day. We were told it was cash only, the woman said they only accept amex! (Who does that?) We were told to go find a cash machine. Very rude.
Fortunately the pints hadn't been pulled so we went elsewhere.
Avoid this one.

A friendly bar with lovely staff. The food looked nice so we stayed for the 2 course menu for €16.95. Nice food with fresh ingredients and not a tourist trap.

Madame was very helpful and smiling. The Bergerie Salad and house Burger was tasty and the portion was large.
MERCEDES PAZ MORILLAS EXPOSITO★★★★☆
Small bar with 4 tables on the street. We had lunch with 5 people with a menu option for €16.50. The correct dishes with strong points and room for improvement.
Strong points: the tuna with mayonnaise and avocado, the fries, the ceasar salad, the desserts.
Room for improvement: the fish and chicken burgers in batter and frozen, the portion size (without the batter there is little left) and fries (lots, luckily they were very good!). To compensate for the very friendly and attentive service and the quiet place.
Recommended for getting out of the way.

A delightful lunchtime at St Malo with the new owners. The set menu was excellent, featuring a choice cut of meat. The dessert was superb; the tiramisu was simply irresistible. Well done to the chef!

Valérie and Vincent, the new owners, are lovely and perfect for a coffee, a meal (brasserie-style service), or to buy tobacco, e-cigarettes, CBD, scratch cards, etc. Right in the heart of Bayeux.

We spent a night in Bayeux and we just walking around town and happen to find this restaurant. We went in an immediately got a table. It was a very cute place.
The service was very good and friendly. The food was very good, came out hot, fresh, and presented very well. Most importantly the food was very tasty. If you are in the area I would strongly recommend this restaurant.

Extremely delicious burgers. Very impressive. Also had the duck breast with peppercorn sauce. 👍🏼

The Normand burger was great. But the andoulli sausage in my opinion did not smell or taste good. It reminded me of the way a goat or horse smells. I took off the sausage and the burger was fantastic. The staff was friendly. My only complaint was the sausage in the burger. Maybe I should have known....but I did not.

Happy that there was space here for our group of 8. Children shared a pizza and a portion of the nachos whilst husband and I went for a baked Camembert and potatoes. The Camembert was advertised as coming with bread but our dish also came with meat, which might upset someone non-meat eaters but we removed it and didn't affect our enjoyment of the meal. There was free WiFi which kept the kids entertained. Nice outdoor seating area.

The place is relaxed and really makes you feel on holiday at the seaside, with garden furnitureand wooden floors; the snacks were ok, but unluckily there was not all what was listed on the menu outside, the quiche was finished so it was difficult to make a second choice as the list was quite limited.

What a fantastic find. It lives up to its name - what a perfect place to get the rest my back and legs needed after lots of walking round Bayeux (had to go back to car park about 10 mins away to extend my parking before coming back to the Tapestry Museum. Really lovely staff and although customers are constant, there's no being hurried to move on.

Not only did they prepare warm food quickly so late in the evening, they also went out of their way to help us find a local hotel when in a crunch. The food was amazing and portions were big. The outdoor seating was comfy and inviting. Absolutely no complaints. Loved it here!

This craft brewery on the edge of Bayeux makes great beer. We did not see the request to make a reservation but we were welcomed. We were offered several beers including an IPA and AMBREE. Both very good. Because we were not expected, we had the opportunity to compare fresh IPA from a bottle with older beer from the tap which was very interesting.
They sometimes have live music and food so it would be a great place to spend an afternoon with friends
Jean Crampton★★★★★
This is a really cool, small brewery, which is well worth visiting. We contacted the owners through their website and arranged a visit - there were just four people on the tour, so very intimate. Franck, the owner/tour guide, kindly did the tour in English and French to accommodate everyone. The tour itself was very interesting. Franck was very generous with his time and with the beer tasting at the end.
The beer itself is really tasty and we bought some to take home. Would highly recommend this.

A cozy place, where you feel right at home, Linda and Thibault are welcoming, we had a platter, as beautiful as it was delicious, I recommend this place, the atmosphere is warm.
Anat0le_Ulbrik★★★★★
Having come several times to buy cigarettes, I decided this time to settle in for a coffee. Ultimately, the pleasant atmosphere and an impromptu chat with another customer about photography led me to order two more 😁
The setting is lovely, well-designed, and very well-maintained. The drinks are beautifully presented (even a simple espresso is served on a small wooden board, which is original, more aesthetically pleasing, and more practical for both the customer and the staff, compared to most bars), and the team is welcoming and professional. The background music is really nice (a bit jazzy/vintage, which perfectly matches the establishment's relaxed and friendly vibe).
I can't comment on the food, as I haven't tried it, but the other reviews, unanimously positive, speak for themselves.
A new address not to be missed in Bayeux, between strolls along the main street.
Thank you!

I don't know if it was intentional or if she just made a mistake, but my mother-in-law and I were ripped off for a few euros, even though there were two of us. Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Bayeux
Navigating a French drinking scene often differs slightly from the bar culture in the UK, the US, or other parts of Europe. To ensure you have the most authentic and enjoyable experience possible, it helps to understand a few local customs and practicalities. Here is how to drink like a local and make the most of your evenings in Bayeux.
Embrace the Aperitif Hour: The French dining schedule often runs later than in some countries, but the pre-dinner drink is sacred. Between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, bars fill up with people enjoying a glass of wine, a local beer, or a kir. This is the best time to soak up the atmosphere and secure a good seat before the dinner rush begins.
Order the Local Specialties: While you can find international beer brands and standard cocktails, you are in Normandy. Step out of your comfort zone and try a cidre bouche (traditional sparkling cider) or a pommeau (a blend of apple juice and Calvados). If you are brave, end your night with a Calvados neat—it is the local brandy and a point of regional pride.
Understand the "Bar vs. Brasserie" Dynamic: Some of the best places to drink in Bayeux are actually brasseries or restaurants. It is perfectly acceptable to enter a brasserie and only order drinks, as long as you are respectful of the space. However, if the staff is setting tables for dinner service, be prepared to either vacate your table or order food.
Cash is King for Small Tabs: While most established bars in Bayeux accept credit and debit cards, many have a minimum spend for card transactions, often around €10 or €15. If you are just popping in for a single espresso or a quick glass of wine, it is polite and practical to carry a bit of cash.
Take Advantage of the Terrasse: Bayeux is a beautiful city, and much of the socializing happens outdoors. During the warmer months, the terraces fill up quickly. However, note that smoking is generally permitted on outdoor terraces. If you prefer to avoid smoke, you might want to sit inside or choose a table upwind.
Pace Yourself with the High-Proof Stuff: Calvados and Pommeau are delicious but deceptively strong. The locals sip these slowly; they are digestifs meant to be savored, not shots to be slammed. Follow the local lead to avoid a rough morning before your tour of the Tapestry Museum.
As the evening winds down in Bayeux, the streets quiet down to a peaceful hum, leaving you with the lingering taste of cider or the warmth of a good wine. The bar scene here is not about wild excess; it is about the art of relaxation, the joy of good company, and the appreciation of a region that takes its beverages seriously.
Whether you spent your evening debating the finer points of medieval history with a local or simply watching the world go by from a sun-drenched terrace, a night out in Bayeux is a memory worth savoring. So raise a glass, toast to the spirit of Normandy, and enjoy the unique charm that only this historic town can offer after dark.
