15 Best Affordable Restaurants in Montpellier

Montpellier has a way of making you feel hungry at almost any hour. Between the sun-soaked terraces of Place de la Comédie, the winding medieval streets of the Écusson, and the vibrant student neighborhoods near the universities, the city pulses with an energy that demands good food without the pretentious price tag. Eating well here does not require a reservation at a Michelin-starred table or a wallet full of euros.

The local dining culture is refreshingly democratic. Bistrots, cafés, and small family-run kitchens sit comfortably beside more upscale addresses, and many of them serve exceptional food at prices that feel almost too good to be true. For students, travelers, and locals alike, the challenge is not finding a meal but deciding which affordable gem to try next.

French cuisine often carries a reputation for formality and expense, but Montpellier flips that script beautifully. The city’s proximity to the Mediterranean, the Languedoc vineyards, and the farms of the Hérault means that fresh ingredients are abundant and relatively inexpensive. Chefs can afford to keep prices low while still filling plates with regional produce, seafood, and cheese.

This guide focuses on restaurants where a full meal, often including a starter, main course, and sometimes even a glass of wine, stays comfortably within a modest budget. These are not fast-food chains or tourist traps with laminated menus. Instead, they are genuine local addresses where quality, atmosphere, and value meet in a way that makes you want to return the next day.

We have visited these kitchens, spoken with the people running them, and paid attention to consistency, portion size, and the kind of hospitality that makes a meal memorable. The list below covers a range of cuisines and neighborhoods, from classic French comfort food to Lebanese, Italian, and North African influences that reflect the city’s cosmopolitan character.

Whether you are looking for a quick lunch between lectures, a relaxed dinner after exploring the Antigone district, or a weekend brunch that will not break your travel budget, Montpellier has you covered. Here are fifteen of the best affordable restaurants in the city right now.

Brilliant food and great service in a lovely part of the city. Cheese burger and frites for my son and a veggie burger and frites for me. Perfect.
Heeman★★★★★
We took away three items, sandwich with chicken and chèvre(goat cheese), veggie wrap and a bubble tea with cherries and lychee. The sandwich and the veggie wrap was really tasty. The bubble tea was also very good. The service was quick and the guy was super friendly. Good place to have a small bite.
Ian Baltutis★★★★★
Great service, very friendly and helpful. The bread was wonderful and perfectly crunchy on the sandwiches. The fries were excellent and there was a nice shady spot to sit and escape the sun and heat. Recommended!

The chef is really friendly! Reasonably priced, good local vibes & food is heartwarming as well as homemade 🔥 His kid even wrote me a post note !! How cute!!!!! Must visit

One of the best surprises, it might look like some other restaurants in the area, but it is an absolute hidden gem. The food is excellent, made with great care and passion, the service is very friendly and attentive. We tried the Philly, the Italian salad and the fries. The beef was cooked perfectly medium like we asked, the ingredients harmonize very well together. The fries were fresh, crunchy and well spiced, the tartar sauce added nice balance. The Chardonnay we tried was wonderful and the focaccia was the best we ever had. We will definitely come back! Please do yourself a favor and try this place!
Sandra Llovera★★★★★
The food and service was great. They hosted us amazingly and we enjoyed both sandwiches (Le Philly was our fav).
Shailesh Jadhav★☆☆☆☆
I ordered le BLT, and tbh the sandwich was just super dry. It had only lettuce, chicken patty, bacon, and some sauce. For the price of 12 euros i was completely disappointed. Suggestion: change the bread, and add more stuffing to the sandwich.

The bread here!! So good. the team running this place is so nice and you can tell they take pride with how clean and well kept it is.

We had an amazing lunch here on a rainy Monday - so sat inside. The food, wine and friendly service were all 10/10. We could have happily ordered most of the menu but settled for the Special Burger and Pork Belly - which were both fantastic and full of flavour. I would highly recommend this fantastic French bistro restaurant. Served by lovely people too - thank you!

Lovely restaurant tucked away in the corner behind St.Anns Church. Open only for 2.5h for lunch, but amazing food. Just short menu of a delicious french meals. Very reasonable priced. Lovely atmosphere and friendly service, despite the language barrier.

Amazing french cuisine. Incredibly tasty dishes. The linguine with seafood were absolutely delicious, and the chocolate moelleux was perfectly prepared. The vegetarian cheese + fries were also very nice. Strongly recommended, a highlight on our trip to Montpellier.

It does not matter what age you are you will love the decoration. The place is so inviting and enjoyable. Service is very nice, we could get the place even without reservation. Food is very good, no it is great. Local craft beer and local wine. Enjoyed it absolutely and thoroughly. All recommendations. Combined with a beautiful city, what is there not to like.

Both the salmon and beef tatar were very fresh and delicious. The eggs mayonnaise were also delicious. Personally I prefer my beef tartar with the raw egg and to be able to mix the ingredients together myself, but I absolutely ate every morsel. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend 🇨🇦

A downhill experience. Booked a table for three, for a brunch. The food wasn't very good, but I was mostly shocked by the poor quality of the service. The staff didn't find our reservation and started to ask for proof of reservation -- understandable, but at least they could ask nicely. Then, ordering food was quite the adventure. Due to food restrictions and severe allergies, we had to ask a couple of questions. The staff didn't even know what was in the "homemade dip" and seemed frustrated we would even ask. When ordering another dish without the sauce, they answered -- rudely -- they couldn't because the sauce was already made -- understand that the whole dish was pre-made and likely just re-heated. After pushing back, we could finally get one made without the sauce. Well, neither the regular brunch nor the modified one was very good. Luckily, the meal was cheap. Food is a matter of taste -- but I would at least expect the staff to be polite.
Antoine Azar★★★★★
We booked online, got there our table was ready we didn’t have to wait at all. The staff was smiley and fun. We got two lunch menus, a mega cheeseburger each with comté and it was one of the best burgers I’ve had in france. They were out of pancakes so we took a cheesecake and a tiramisu. The cheesecakes missed crunch in the bottom and the tiramisu wasn’t special at all. However, we will come back for the pancakes !
Gabrielle Humphrey★★★★☆
It’s a nice restaurant for fussy eaters. Indeed the menu is made to ressemble a home meal. If you are with a group of people who cannot agree on what to eat, this is the place to go. It will appease tensions over the stressful “I don’t like anything on the menu”. The atmosphere is made to entertain and jog your childhood memory: board games, music playlist and other distractions from the food itself to stop fussy eaters desperately poring over the menu. No more than 2 or 3 ingredients per dish. We had a starter of chorizo falafels and courgette fritters followed by cheeseburger and beef chuck steak (typical French cut of beef, firm and tasty), generous portions of chips and side salad (as in salad leaves, French way). I was looking forward to the chips! They were well made. Pudding was a strawberry millefeuille. All in all, plenty to eat and good atmosphere that will appeal to the lost child in the grown ups and entertain the ones who never grew up.

The pasta was fresh, as were all the toppings like the pesto. It's definitely a great place that we'll want to return to soon. Many thanks to the cooks who were very kind and helpful.

This is a great place, run by true enthusiasts who cook fresh food. The storefront doesn't lie, it's a snack bar! And a quality one at that! 🫶 Special mention for the student menu, and Daniel is fantastic.

Nice home made dishes served here. We ordered 3 pizzas and one Gnocchi dish from the menu, all freshlyade. Vegetarian options available as well. The seating option on the street are quite nice as in summer cool breeze really helps.
janie dawes★★★★★
This is a gem of a restaurant. The service is excellent, attentive and personal. The food is fresh and beautiful and full of flavor. The location is iconic French patio in a quiet pedestrian street. The menu is well labeled for vegetarian and they readily accommodated my avocado allergy, and offered substitution to ensure my vegeburger wouldn’t be dry and would have a similar dining experience. As we awaited our entrees they brought us some DELICIOUS hummus on toast to sample. If you are in Montpellier and looking for a bite to eat this should definitely be a top choice.
Anna Dawes★★★★★
Lovely restaurant! Delicious food, and staff is so sweet and accommodating. My party had allergies, and the staff were so accommodating and ultimately wonderful. Highly recommend if you are in the area looking for an excellent lunch spot.
Rhys Williams★★★★★
Very attentive staff and good food. Love the situation, tucked away but close to the main thoroughfares. Nice twists on classics.
Yirong Yang★☆☆☆☆
I am so surprised by the good reviews this place has received and cannot help but doubt their validity. The food was extremely mediocre. The cordon bleu came with very dry and unevenly cut chicken breast, with disproportional layers of bacon and cheese. The moussaka contained half-cooked eggplants that had very rough skins. Both dishes were less palatable than anything you can get from an average fast food restaurant, and with this price I could have had some real food. Even with the 20% off TheFork discount, I don’t think it’s worth it at all. We made the mistake of staying after we saw the chaotic, ugly and old furniture both inside and outside the restaurant. There was no decor or what can be called an ambiance whatsoever. I would avoid this at all costs if you want some pleasant dining experience during your time in Montpellier.

There were many problems with the food. The salad was average and missing ingredients listed on the menu. The salad was also poorly prepared and it looked liked they just threw whatever they wanted into it. It was obviously poorly presented. Secondly the burger was wet pool of sauce. The bottom bun was completely soggy and fell apart once the wood skewer was removed. The fries were ok. In addition, the bathrooms were filthy and again our deserts weren’t even close to the menu description. The Mille feuille was just two biscuits with sweet syrup. Finally to make it worse they charged us the tip two times adding an extra 10 euros to the order. PLEASE do not come here unless you want under average food.
pat canada★★★★★
Wonderfully imagined food. Gravlax de truite was superb as was the chevre creme a l'abricot. Beautiful outdoor patios with great brunch on sundays.
Lee Heng★★★★☆
The service is really nice and friendly! It is a good place to have lunch/dinner with family and friends. You will have a big table and space to enjoy the food. I ordered the main dish pork, the pork is very tender with sweet source on top of it, the amount is big portion. The only thing is a bit oily, if they can reduce fat oil before put on the dish, it will be wonderful. The other part is about the background music, instead of bar music, it will be nicer to play some calm and slow music to match food style. In general, we had a very good time on it 😊
Jon Gledhill★★★★★
What a great choice!! We wondered around looking for somewhere and came across this surprising gem. The food was awesome and more than we expected. Would highly recommend this and would come back 100%..love the desserts in jars!!
Kirill Maksimkin★★★★☆
That’s a good restaurant with nice wine. But overall o can’t say it’s a good price quality balance. I decided to give it a second chance to taste their menu from Chief. Overall staff is friendly and very nice. But it feels a bit messy

Really nice café close to the botanical garden. The food was absolutely amazing, i personally recommend their avocado poké bowl. They also had a big variety of drinks and they were all fantastic, especially their porter. Finding the menu, ordering and paying was easy; you just had to scan a QR code. The prices are much cheaper than what you’d find in the center and the food is much better. I’d definitely recommend stopping by here! 🌟🌟🌟
Fraser R★★★★★
Arrived at our apartment just before lunch so this was the nearest cafe. Quite close to the university & as such there was a strong student vibe. I’d try & get a table in the shade next time 🥵. Wanted a light lunch so ordered some nachos & calamari. Both were delicious as was the Chardonnay. Highly recommended.
Raf De Groot★★★★☆
Great food! I had de butchers piece and it was very tasty. The service wad great, even though they were slightly understaffed, so we had to wait a little while. But overall it was a great experience
David Jones★★★★★
Stopped for lunch and we both enjoyed the “plat du jour” of Blanquette de veau followed by a cafe gourmand. Great friendly service despite my poor attempt at ordering in French. Busy lunch service but food arrived quickly and was tasty. Will return to try other menu items that caught our eye.
Emanuel Toarcăş-Marcu★★★★☆
I served my coffee outside and it was quite a lovely place, but pretty noisy and a bit crammed for my taste. I've seen that inside is way bigger so maybe I will go inside the next time I visit it.

Really good crepes with so many options to choose from that I had to go multiple times to try what I wanted!
Alexey Subach★★★★★
Amazing galettes and crepes, and extremely involved staff! The galette complete tasted very well and the galette was crunchy, just as I love it. The duo caramel crepe was so delicious! Their offer of galette + crepe + cider and salad for 15.5 EUR is a very good price/quality ratio. The man serving us was working really hard to make sure everyone gets their orders, I felt like they were a bit understaffed because the waiting time was a bit higher than average (which was the only downside)
Mahmoud Hashoush★★★★★
So I arrive a bit late before the place closes without an appointment and all I get was a very warm welcome from the responsible person and the waiter. I had a very delicious crepe "La Split" which has dark chocolate, ice cream (I chose vanilla), chantilly cream and a grilled banana. One of the first impressions you get is the good quality of the ingredients. I also have to say that the crepe itself, was one of the best that I have tried in a while. I also noticed that they have really good connections with their clients, they don't treat them impersonally, which I felt was very nice. Thank you and keep it up! I'll come again! ❤️
Matthew Lejk★★★★★
Amazing crepes and gallettes, had a gallette complete with ham and one with bacon and onion, both bang on! Finished with a snickers crepe which was great. Staff super friendly and the setting in the middle of the square is glorious!

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. We had booked inside as thought it might be cooler but without any aircon an outside table in the pretty square was a better choice. The manager was great, found us a table & helped with our wine choices. Both our dishes were delicious, a salmon on black risotto rice & a steak burger in a green bun😁. We shared the Greek yogurt with lemon desert which was very tasty. £60 for 2 was pretty good value so I’d recommend Le Bistrok. BTW it’s also a short downhill walk back to the #1 tram👍🏻

Unique and full of character and humour. Terrific and original food and cocktails too. I was amused at the simple English while the French one was full of jokes !

The server was excellent and thoroughly explained the menu. The staff spoke both English and French. Friendly and accommodating. Every dish we tried was fantastic 😍
Lorenzo Maffeis★★★★★
We passed through the city and we noticed this cute bistrot many times and we were willing to try it out. We got the chance to eat here for dinner and we were all positively surprised. The entrée were all very good, especially the original truffle croque monsieur that was amazing. The main course was great too! The risotto was super tasty, the bao burger original and flavorful, the meat with the bread gallette too! We took two glasses of wine that suited the meal just finely. The dessert was very generous, the vanilla ice cream in particular, and the chocolate cake amazing. Added to this, the two waiters were super nice and helpful, they explained the whole menu precisely and were very kind to us considered that we were not locals. I suggest to try this place at least once, even just to have a nice and enjoyable meal in a very cute and pleasant atmosphere in the center of Montpellier.

Exceptionally good value menu of the day (beetroot salad starter, chicken main, crème brûlée dessert), really creative and tasty food, great service, friendly staff. Cool aircon, warm welcome and seasonal food were perfect. Dog friendly too!
German Mikheev★★★★★
Ok, that was just great. The food on the one hand is homemade, but on the other hand is prepared and served at the level of an expensive restaurant. Velouté is a great starter with a subtle, barely noticeable pumpkin flavor. Chicken with mushrooms is soft and juicy. The lasagna is not too greasy, which is often the case with this dish, but not this time. The creme brulee was absolutely delicious, I have never tried anything like it, I definitely recommend it. A very warm place with a very friendly owner. I think it is a unique find.
Kaylee W.★★★★★
The quality of their food is incredible and their service too! Everything is fresh and home made. I tried their egg appetizer with a creamy sauce and it was AMAZING. For the main, I got their lasagna which was also incredible. I highly recommend stopping by to eat here!
Don Douglas★★★★★
Wow everything was great! Near the train station so easy to try before leaving or when you arrive in Montpellier. Staff very friendly. Food fresh and grown locally. We had the fish and chicken meals which were only topped by the delicious deserts.
Oliver Kemsley★★★★★
Hi everyone! The starter and main I had were really delicious and well presented. I got the impression that the menu is quite small meaning that the dishes are made fresh and high-quality. The server was friendly and engaging. I liked the large window into the kitchen so you could watch the chef making the meal. I really liked that although I was still waiting ten minutes after official closing, they didn't hurry me or make me feel unwelcome.

We ordered take away. The hot dog is good. However the chicken tender is quite burnt. When I came back and asked about it, the person said it's normal. I'm not so sure if it's normal. Compared to other picture posted in the review, it looks quite burnt. Probably just not my taste. Hot dog however, was good. Will come back to try corn dog but won't buy the tender again.

Look like only one place where you can find some food after 21 in the city 🫠 Beef burger was quite nice. Burger with chicken a bit weird, but it’s chicken burger. Unfortunately no beer in the bar at all 😢

We arrived in Montpellier and we were looking for a nice place to have a late lunch. We spotted Chez lez Amis right next to the playground our kids were playing. They have a great selection of dishes for everyone and they also do kids menus if asked. The food was really good. We chose the duck skewers, the salmon poke bowl, a pasta dish and the panko chicken kids menu. Service was impeccable. Very helpful with the menu and the available options and quick service from start to end. Definitely recommended for a quick lunch or dinner, with family or friends.

I highly recommend it!

How to Eat Well on a Budget in Montpellier

Affordable dining in Montpellier is about more than just picking the right restaurant. A few local habits and timing choices can stretch your euros further while improving the overall experience. The following tips come from years of eating across the city and watching how locals navigate menus, hours, and neighborhoods.

Follow the lunch formulas. Most restaurants offer a formule midi or menu du jour on weekdays, typically priced between €12 and €18 for two or three courses. The same kitchen that charges €25 or more for dinner will often serve a nearly identical lunch at half the price.

Look beyond the main squares. Place de la Comédie and Place Jean Jaurès are beautiful, but the rent those terraces pay is reflected in the menu. Walk five minutes into the side streets of the Écusson or toward the Beaux-Arts and Saint-Roch neighborhoods, and prices drop noticeably while quality often rises.

Embrace the international kitchens. Montpellier’s Lebanese, Vietnamese, Moroccan, and Italian restaurants frequently offer the best value in town. Generous sharing plates, hearty bowls, and wood-fired flatbreads deliver flavor and satisfaction at prices that make French bistrots look expensive by comparison.

Check the blackboard before you sit down. The best affordable kitchens change their menu daily based on what the market offered that morning. A short, handwritten menu is a strong sign that the kitchen is cooking from scratch rather than reheating from a freezer.

Go at off-peak hours. If you can eat an early lunch at noon or a slightly late dinner after 9 p.m., you will often find quieter service and occasionally reduced prices. Some cafés also offer a cheaper après-midi snack menu between the main meal services.

Bring cash for small spots. While most places now accept cards, a few tiny family-run kitchens and market stalls still prefer cash for orders under €10. Having a €20 note in your pocket avoids awkward moments and keeps things moving quickly.

Montpellier’s food scene proves that eating well in France does not have to be a luxury. The city rewards those who wander a little, eat with the seasons, and follow the locals rather than the tourist crowds. Whether you settle into a tiled bistro for a slow lunch or grab a warm flatbread to eat on a sunny bench, the pleasure of the table is never far away.

The next time hunger strikes between the plane trees and limestone facades, skip the overpriced terrace and try one of the addresses above. You will leave with a full stomach, a lighter bill, and a better understanding of why this southern city has quietly become one of the best-value dining destinations in France.
